Edward Drake

Teddy Drake

The Rev. Edward Tyrwhitt Drake (Teddy Drake) rode in a few steeplechases at Oxford before taking part in the only important race he rode in, the 1860 Grand National, in which he partnered Bridegroom, which had won the previous year's National Hunt Steeplechase.

Reversing his surname, he rode as Mr Ekard.

It was the only instance of a gentleman riding in the Grand National after having taken Holy Orders. (Some accounts say that Teddy retired from the saddle before becoming a priest.)

The Rev. Edward Tyrwhitt Drake died from paralysis, aged 73, at the Rectory, Amersham, in 1904.
