Robert Davies

Robert Davies

Although Robert Joseph Davies made a promising start to his career with victory on one of his earliest rides, he was unable to add to that total and soon faded from the scene.

He was apprenticed to Colledge Leader, who trained with great success at Machell Place, Newmarket. Robert’s first ride was at his local course, on July 15, 1914, when he finished ninth of 13 on a three-year-old chestnut filly named Correct, having been slowly away, in the Maiden Apprentice Plate for three-year-olds.

Two months later, his red-letter day came at Birmingham on September 21. This time Correct did not let him down, getting away on terms and romping home by 12 lengths in another Maiden Apprentice Plate. There were only four runners and, unfortunately for Robert, the Raceform-up-to-Date form book spelt his name incorrectly as ‘Davis’ instead of Davies.

Although Correct ran twice more that season with experienced jockeys Walter Griggs and Joe Childs up, she failed to win again. It was the same for Robert Davies.

Exactly one year after his first ride he had what proved to be his last, when Bluerock was unplaced in the Reach Two-Year-Old Selling Plate won by Clematis, ridden by Morny Wing, who was on his way to retaining his champion apprentice title.
