Walter Daley

Article by Alan Trout

Walter Daley rode five winners under National Hunt rules in the first decade of the 20th century. It was at Gatwick on March 15, 1905 that he had his first success when scoring by 15 lengths on Tollsworth in the Wickham Hurdle. They followed up five days later by taking the Westenhanger Handicap Hurdle at Folkestone, though only by half a length this time.

Following that second win, the horse’s trainer, Albert Jeapes, took over in the saddle, meaning Walter had to wait until another Folkestone meeting, on December 13, for his third winner of the year, when Typo was the only finisher in the Ramsgate Handicap Chase, his four rivals all having fallen.

The five-year-old Jessie provided Walter with his sole success of 1906 when winning the Highways Selling Handicap Hurdle at Hawthorn Hill on March 26, the only time on which he rode her.

There was then a gap of over two years before Walter’s final victory, when Limestone won the Tunbridge Wells Selling Chase at the Eridge Hunt meeting on Easter Monday, April 20, by six lengths, again the sole occasion on which he rode the horse.

He did not renew his licence for 1909.

Walter Daley’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Tollsworth, Gatwick, March 15, 1905

2. Tollsworth, Folkestone, March 20, 1905

3. Typo, Folkestone, December 13, 1905

4. Jessie, Hawthorn Hill, March 26, 1906

5. Limestone, Eridge Hunt, April 20, 1908

Walter Daley's first win: Tollsworth, Gatwick, March 15, 1905
