Due to an administrative absence, Mr. Larson will be at Chiddix full time from Monday, February 6th to Friday, February 17th. District administrators will be helping out at Kingsley and the KJHS administrative team may be adjusting some of our scheduled events to accommodate for Mr. Larson's absence. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
Fundraiser: Social Committee will be running the Super Bowl Squares this year.....thanks Darrin for letting us borrow it from you this year. Once the 2 teams are determined this weekend we will begin and run up until the Friday before the Big Game.
$5 a square (100 squares)
We will have 4 quarter winners at $100/quarter
Should it go into overtime, each quarter winner will win $75 and the final score winner will get $100.
This is a small fundraiser for the social committee ($100). To continue to do all the things we do at KJ we needed a few extra funds to take us through the end of the year. Thanks for understanding and participating!

Families: The following message went out to Unit 5 families on Thursday, January 26th...
5 ESSENTIALS
Teachers, parents, and students across Illinois have an opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child's school.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the environment at your child's school. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted through Friday, March 31, 2023.
To take the survey:
1. Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/
2. Click on "Start here" under the Parent category
3. You may enter your email address but that is not required. It is completely optional.
4. Enter "McLean" for the County
5. Begin typing your child's school name and you should see it pop up. Click on the appropriate school.
Please take a separate survey for each school where you have a child enrolled.
The survey is also available in Spanish.
The Illinois 5Essentials gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
Research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools strong on at least three of these indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
Unit 5 students in grades 4th-12th will be given the opportunity to take this survey. If you do not want your child to take the survey, please contact your child's principal by Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.
Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found on the Illinois 5Essentials Support Center ( Illinois 5Essentials Survey Questions).
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.
In the next few weeks, Elisa will send out a messaging you can pass on to KJHS families to encourage completion of the 5 Essentials Survey. We appreciate your help in this endeavor!

Have you ever considered writing a Beyond the Books Grant??? Now is your chance.
Beyond the Books Educational Foundation is now accepting applications for grants.
Beyond the Books provides funding for innovative academic programs in Unit 5 and District 87.
GRANT TYPES AND FUNDING AMOUNTS …
• BEYOND THE BOX: One grant in an amount between $7500 and $10,000 will be awarded in this category for an exceptional proposal. The $7500 - $10,000 award is given by a private foundation to Beyond the Books Educational Foundation and BTBEF selects the winner.
• STANDARD: Grants awarded in this category are limited to requests for $801 to $5000. • MINI: Grants awarded in this category are limited to $800 or less.
• You may submit applications with the same proposal in both the Standard and Beyond the Box categories. If you choose to do so, you must use the same title for both applications and within the Beyond the Box application, clearly explain how the extra money would be used. Only one of the two applications may receive an award.
Please note, the maximum size for Mini Grants has doubled from $400 to $800. The Beyond the Books bylaws require that approximately 15% of the total annual allocation be used to fund Mini Grants. Historically, this has resulted in a much higher percentage of Mini Grants being funded than Standard Grants.
Please find more information, rubrics, and details on how to apply at CLICK HERE. Here is a link to grant specifics.
The application deadline is 6 pm, March 6. We strongly recommend not waiting until the last minute.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE... THERE ARE SOME CHANGES THIS YEAR
Last year’s rubric had 8 questions. This year there are only 7.
Notable features of the two versions:
Question 1 is the same.
Questions 2-3 from last year have been replaced by a new question 2 this year. Also, where questions 2 and 3 were each worth 5 points last year, this year question 2 is worth 10 points. They did collapse the two old ones into the new one because the content is importantly different.
Because they have one less question, question 4 from last year is question 3 this year. While the questions are the same, the value of this question has been reduced from 5pts to 3pts.
Get in those applications, and please let me know if you have any questions.
Dayna Brown
Students are not allowed to leave the cafeteria during the lunch hour unless they have a pass from a staff member. If you want a student to come to your room during the lunch hour, please give them a pass to show to lunchroom supervisors.
Please complete this form if you are wanting to host a student teacher in the 23-24 school year.
The January Family KJ Connection was sent out to Kingsley families on January 16th.
We have 3 KJHS students represented on the district SEAAT Team (Student Equity Action and Advisory Team); they are Lena Hemp, Madison Baur, and Ja'Nyah Dortch. They will have their next meeting on February 6th from 9:30 - 11 a.m. in The Gathering Place. They have been reminded and will receive passes but we wanted you to have a heads up!
As of January 1, 2023, Unit 5 began offering vision insurance through EyeMed. This is an exciting new benefit and we wanted to share additional information you may find helpful.
Finding Vision Benefit Information
Attached is a summary of the new vision benefits for quick reference. You can also find EyeMed details (and all benefit plan information) on Employee Navigator at any time by following the steps below.
Log in to Employee Navigator
Click on ‘Resources’ in the top right hand corner
Click on ‘All Documents’
Click on the document of your choice to review plan details
EyeMed Cards
EyeMed cards were mailed out earlier this month. However, you do not need a physical card to use the benefits. Your eye care provider can retrieve your coverage information from EyeMed without a card. You can also register on the EyeMed mobile app to view benefit information and access your insurance card. Contact Megan Peterson in HR with any questions.
Hello LA teachers,
Now that our writers have built up some stamina after being home for two weeks, it would be a good time to start thinking about the Winter Benchmark. If you have not given students paper/pencil opportunities lately, it may make sense to do so. Bellringers with writing prompts, would you rather questions, or telling a story from a photograph are great ways for students to free write for a few minutes in a notebook or lined paper. This way, when we ask them to write instead of type the benchmark it won't seem so different.
Our Winter Benchmark Assessment deadline is February 17. By this date, you will have administered, scored, and documented in EduClimber your scores. Please communicate with your LBS1s any names of students who scored red in the chart on Google Classroom that you recommend need a diagnostic. All resources can be found in Google Classroom (hv3buze) and on the Shared Drive.
Happy to help score, discuss next steps with this data, or anything else you may find helpful to you and your writers.
Sincerely,
Janel Sebeny
In case you have not done so already, please be sure to do the January PBIS Lesson with your team sometime this month. Reminding students of behavior expectations is a key component of our PBIS Tier 1 framework and instructional practices.
We have two criminal justice interns starting as safety monitors next week. They will be doing things such as walking hallways, checking bathrooms, assisting with breakfast/lunch areas (as available), escorting students, and being a visible adult presence. Here are their names/days/hours:
Sydney Gudino: M-F 8-11
Tyler Whitmire: MWF 12:30-3:30
T-Th 10:30-1:30
The admin team will be following up with core teams on the work started during our institute time on January 3rd. If your team has not yet completed your plans/goals for students on the Spring 23 Academic Needs Analysis sheet or the F22 Behavior Needs Analysis sheet, please do so. Elisa will be examining academic needs with teams during her monthly meetings while Sylvester and Dennis will be examining the behavior needs during their bi-monthly meetings.
Here is the Q3 PBIS Celebrations information that was sent out last week. Sixth grade will have their Q3 PBIS celebration on 3/23 and 7th and 8th grade will have their Q3 PBIS Celebration on 3/24.
The admin team reviewed behavior expectations with students during lunch on Wednesday, 1/4/23, and we wanted to share those slides with you as well. Here are the big things...
No winter coats or blankets are to worn to class or in the cafeteria. These items should be left in lockers.
Please remind students that any medications need to be on file with the nurse. This includes over the counter meds like Tylenol and Advil.
Pepper spray and mace are not only not allowed at school, it is illegal for minors to be in possession of such items.
Students are not to bring items such as large bags of chips, coffee/tea/hot drinks, polar pops/large sodas, or outside food orders to school. We are having issues with spillage in the hallway, classrooms, and lockers as well as the "sharing frenzy" with large food bags.
Here are the assessment dates for the Spring 23 semester.
