The Power of Content
“Is it okay if there is an evil guy in the story I’m reading?”
I had taught this young boy in the past, and he remembered my concern for quality reading.
As students become better readers, our concerns shift from “How well are they reading?” to “What are they reading?” Both are very important questions to ask.
My reply to the student was:
“Are there good guys in the story?” “What are the evil guys doing?”
I love it when, after introducing a student to historical fiction, they hug the book to their heart and proclaim their love for the story- or when they don’t want to stop reading because they are so engaged. Those moments are a win. It is especially rewarding when they ask for more books like the one they just read.
Children are incredibly impressionable, which makes their reading journey so important. Taking the opportunity to introduce them to art, history, science, and more through reading is profoundly beneficial. They are too young to know that there are subjects they have not yet encountered that have the potential to shape the trajectory of their lives. They don’t yet know what they might be interested in. The idea is to introduce children to genres outside of their comfort zone and stretch their horizons- always with caution.
I am not a huge fan of the fantasy or mystic genres, but I still see the value in them and recognize that they may be exactly what captures a child’s interest. Some adults say, “I don’t care for history.” May I suggest that your child never hear you say that. Children are deeply influenced by our opinions and often seek to adopt them as their own.
Some books may seem old-fashioned, but reading classic literature introduces children to history, vocabulary, and art in a way that little else can. I especially recommend listening to classics. Children become better readers as they hear the cadence, expression, and fluency of a skilled reader. Playing an audiobook in the car while driving to and from activities can be helpful for the entire family. It’s entertaining, too, and often everyone enjoys it.
Exposure to quality reading material is vital to developing a curious mind. It also helps children learn to think, reason, and ask questions- qualities that will serve them well throughout life.
Happy reading!

Thank you to our families for working with us during carpool with the cold and snow. Here are some friendly reminders to keep everyone safe and things moving as quickly as possible:
Please respect school staff. They are there to keep you safe. We have hundreds of cars to manage, which only happens smoothly when everyone follows the rules.
Please drive slowly, especially in the back by the play park.
Please refrain from using your cell phone while driving.
If you are picking up a preschool student, please make sure that you are checked in before leaving your car to do so.
Please pull all the way up to the cones and pull in close to one another so we can maximize our space.
Make sure to use the app or at least have your number readily available.
If you are in wave 2, patiently remain in your car. Students are not allowed passed the cones.
