Homework Tips
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The beginning of a new school year always excites me! I search the ads for the best deals on colorful pens, cute folders, and notebooks. I look for new room decorations and inspiring messages and posters. I loved taking my children back to school shopping for new shoes and backpacks. I often wonder if I became a teacher because I love the start of school and all the new supplies! Perhaps you feel the excitement of the new year too. I still feel it as fall begins and the daily routine settles in.
The daily routine……come home, change clothes, grab a snack, and start on homework. Do you look forward to the upcoming project? Do you dread the daily fight? Do you like the challenge of new concepts? Do you see the progress from day to day and year to year? Homework creates a bridge between home and school. It expands upon what is done in the classroom and gives valuable practice with what was learned. Homework also teaches lessons beyond what is taught at school. It provides the opportunity to reinforce life skills we instill in students: time management, responsibility, organization, and prioritization.
How can you help with homework?
1. Make sure your child has a quiet place to do homework; most kids don’t need distractions.
2. Be positive about homework; if you complain about the work, think about the message you send.
3. Provide guidance when your child asks for help; they need assistance, not the answers. See below for some suggested responses in graphic below.
4. Make a plan; work ahead on projects, break the work into manageable chunks, and schedule breaks.
5. Get help if needed; talk to the teacher if there are continuing problems with homework.
Make homework a positive part of your nightly routine. Homework should be challenging enough to be thought-provoking and your child should be able to complete it independently and successfully most of the time. Have a wonderful year!
Sincerely,
Denise Chancellor
Learning Coordinator

Fall MAP testing continues next week. K-8 will take MAP Growth in Reading and Math, and grades 3-8 will also test Language. Please make an extra effort to ensure your child arrives on time, eats breakfast, and has a snack on testing days. While MAP is only one snapshot of how your child is doing, it does provide valuable data to help teachers plan instruction to meet your child's learning needs.
