Dear Parents/Guardians,
Research shows that emotions affect how and why we learn, and that social and emotional literacy supports success in every part of a student’s life. SEL helps students to identify their feelings and better manage their emotions, which positively impacts their academics and relationships. Because of this, at St. Gabriel, we make Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) a priority.
Last year we launched a K-8 biblically-based SEL character development program called Friendzy. This evidence-based program teaches life skills to our students with an emphasis on building strong, healthy friendships. Students learn to recognize and manage emotions, care about others, make good decisions, behave ethically and responsibly, develop positive relationships, and avoid negative behaviors.
We are now into our third unit of Friendzy. This unit is titled “I Am Known.” During this unit, students are learning the importance of not only telling their stories and listening to others, but also learning that God created and knows their story more than anyone. He knows our past, present, and future.
Unit Catchphrase (main point for students to catch on to): I Am Known
Unit Key Verse (Biblical anchor points): “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” Psalm 139:1-4

God knows you. We are not a number or nameless person. God knows the stories of our lives even before they come to be (Psalm 139:1-4). He knows your story and he loves you. There is nothing you can do to make Him love you less. He loves you because He loves you.
Know your story. It’s important that we know our own stories. Understanding our own stories helps us know who we are. God is going to work through every part of your story to grow and strengthen you.
Know other people’s stories. Our stories teach us about ourselves and about each other. When we know each other’s stories, it helps us to be kind to each other, celebrate our differences and know how to help and support each other. We want to be in the kind of class where every one of us is known.
Just as we are teaching the students to share their stories, we want you as parents/guardians to share yours as well! During dinner or on your way to a sporting event ask about your child’s story and then share your own! Doing this will create a deeper connection for your family and put what they are learning in school into their home environment!
Because God wrote our stories, He knows every single bump, mistake, failure, and loss along the way. Regardless of knowing all of our weak moments God loves us anyway. There is nothing we need to prove to him or level of perfection we need to reach, we are KNOWN and we are loved unconditionally.
When kids learn friendship, they learn it for life!
Have a great weekend!

In our commitment to continuous school improvement, the Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Catholic Schools will regularly administer perception surveys, certified through Cognia©, our accrediting organization and trusted partner in school improvement. The purpose of the survey is to solicit feedback from our stakeholders. This year, as a part of our celebration of Discover Catholic Schools Week, we are asking you, as well as our faculty/staff and students (grades 5-8) to complete the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness survey. At the end of this paragraph, you will find a link to the questionnaire. Your feedback is a valued and crucial component of our continuous improvement planning, so we thank you in advance for taking the time to thoughtfully respond to the survey which will be open until November 18.
School Board invites you to participate in a parent/guardian listening session about why you chose and continue to choose Saint Gabriel for your child's education as well as ideas to make our school even better! The session will be November 28 at 6:30 p.m. and is limited to the first 40 registrants.
St. Gabriel PTSO’s Father/Daughter dance will take place Saturday, December 2nd. Tickets are now on sale online. Tickets will only be available online and will not be available at the door the day of the event. This year we will have picture ornaments guaranteed for the first 300 girls signed up to attend the dance. The theme is Winter Wonderland and we look forward to a night of friends, music and a chocolate fountain.
The Outstanding Catholic Reader Program is beginning this month and will run thru April. The program is for students in Kindergarten-8th grade. It encourages students to read books from our library that promote the virtues of faith, hope, love, justice, courage, and service.
Students that wish to participate will need to check out and read books from their class list that will be provided. The books are in our library and titles are determined by grade level. They will need to turn in their completed list, signed by a parent by May 2nd to be recognized. Look for handouts that are being sent out.

“All Catholic Schools in Jefferson County are closed.” – Saint Gabriel is closed. In the case that Saint Gabriel is closed, Saint Gabriel Preschool will make every effort to offer full-day care for registered participants. Notification will be sent separately.
All morning activities, including detention, are cancelled for that day. Detention will be served the following scheduled day. You will also be notified via the Saint Gabriel Reach Alert program. It is the parent’s responsibility to sign up for Reach Alert and to make any changes to their account.
