Dear Parents/Guardians,
Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe, a child abuse prevention curriculum, begins this month. K-8 students are taught that safe adults can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, or another identified and trusted adult. During our lessons, students will be asked to identify who their safe adult is. Continue the conversation at home and ask who your child(ren) selected as their safe adult.
The topics and depth of concepts are tailored with age-appropriate language for students to understand. Over the course of the two lessons, all students will be taught the five safety rules:
Safety Rule #1 – “It’s MY body!”
Safety Rule #2 – “Ask an adult if I am safe.”
Safety Rule #3: “I have choices.”
Safety Rule #4: “Tell someone.”
Safety Rule #5: “It’s NEVER my fault.”
I will upload additional information following each lesson onto your student(s) Guidance Schoology course. Please review this information, so that you can know more about what your student learned. If you would like more information on Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe, and how to prevent child abuse, you can visit www.childhelp.org/SpeakUpBeSafe.
For the third year, we are using a program called SOS (Signs of Suicide). The program teaches 6th-8th grade students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help for themselves or a friend. SOS is geared towards teaching your student(s) how to save a life!
Through the program, students learn:
how to identify potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to a teacher or counselor about any concerns.
For additional information regarding SOS, 6 - 8th grade parents please visit your child(s) Guidance Schoology page. Please visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent or additional information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
If you have any additional questions regarding either of these programs, please contact me directly at seaton@stgabriel.net.
Have a great weekend!

As part of Spirit Week, we will have a Saint Gabriel Trivia Contest. Do you have some trivial knowledge we can use for our Saint Gabriel trivia contest? Questions can be about our parish, school, or Saint Gabriel himself. Tell us! Visit this form to submit your question.
Fall MAP testing continues this week. Please make an extra effort to ensure your child arrives on time, eats breakfast, and has a snack on testing days. While MAP is only one snapshot of how your child is doing, it does provide valuable data to help teachers plan instruction to meet your child's learning needs.
Saint Gabriel will be hosting its annual PTSO Walk-A-Thon on Friday, October 27th. Funds raised help provide student scholarships, school enrichment, teacher request for their classrooms and teacher encouragement throughout the year. We are looking for community business to help support our walk this year through various sponsorship levels. This is a great way to promote a local business. Family and Individual donations will begin later in October.
Do wish you had contact information for school contacts all in one place? Now you do! Check out our St. Gabriel Whom to Go to for What document.
