Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we enter the season of Advent, our school community is preparing our hearts and minds for the joy and hope of Christmas. Advent is a time of waiting—an invitation to slow down, reflect, and look forward with expectation. In the Church, Advent symbolizes light growing in darkness and reminds us that small acts of kindness, prayer, and love can help prepare a place for Christ in our lives.
Celebrating Advent at Home
To help your family embrace the beauty of this season, here are a few simple traditions you can enjoy together:
Create an Advent Wreath: Light a candle each Sunday of Advent and take a moment to pray, share something you’re grateful for, or reflect on a virtue such as hope, peace, joy, or love.
Family Kindness Challenge: Encourage children to offer small acts of kindness—helping a sibling, writing a thoughtful note, or donating gently-used items. Keep a family “Kindness Jar” to collect these moments.
Advent Prayer Routine: Choose a short daily prayer, blessing, or Scripture verse to read together. Even one quiet minute in the morning or before bed can become a meaningful family practice.
Limit to Listen: Consider setting aside a little “Advent quiet time” where screens are off, and the family reads, listens to music, or enjoys simple conversation.
Prepare a Nativity Scene: Gradually add figures throughout Advent, saving the placement of Baby Jesus for Christmas Eve to highlight the anticipation of the season.
How We Are Observing Advent at School
Throughout the coming weeks, our students will take part in activities designed to help them understand and celebrate the message of Advent. These include:
Lighting our school Advent wreath each week and reflecting on the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love.
Engaging in classroom discussions and age-appropriate lessons that explore the meaning of Advent.
Participating in opportunities for prayer, service, and acts of kindness within our school community.
Enjoying our all-school Advent Program put on by the First Grade.
Creating classroom wreaths, using Advent calendars, and taking part in special Advent tree traditions—many of which are rooted in family customs and carried on at school.
Together, at home and at school, we hope to make this season a meaningful time of preparation—not just for Christmas day, but for nurturing hearts that are generous, peaceful, and full of hope.
Wishing your family a blessed Advent season.

We are excited to share that St. Gabriel Preschool has been selected to participate in Thrive by 5 Louisville, an early childhood development program led by Mayor Greenberg, and supported by the Louisville Metro Council and the State of Kentucky.
As noted on the Thrive by 5 Louisville website, "Thrive by 5 is partnering with 26 early learning centers across Louisville to support educators, strengthen classrooms, and make childcare more accessible for families. This is just the beginning, but it represents a powerful step toward a community where every child can thrive."
We applied for this distinction, and the associated pilot program, in the summer and after an extensive vetting and interview process, St. Gabriel was selected as part of the pilot program. We are so excited about the opportunity this provides to our existing and future students and our community. We are thriving here at St. Gabriel.

It’s that time of year. The weather is turning colder, and it's time to bundle up outside. We do go outside for recess even when the weather is cold so please send your child with a coat, hat, and gloves. Students need to wear a Saint Gabriel sweatshirt with their uniform. All non-uniform sweatshirts or jackets are removed when inside. Be sure to LABEL these items so they can be returned if lost.
Seeking nominations! The Angel Award recognizes a Saint Gabriel School employee who serves as a role model and is a positive influence in our community. Alums, current parents, past parents, students, faculty, and staff are invited to nominate a current administrator, faculty, or staff member who has made a significant difference in their lives. Previous winners include Mr. Freeman Parker, Mrs. Susan Adams, and Mrs. Jennifer Schulz.
Nominations are due by Monday, December 8, 2025 and must include a description (two paragraph minimum) supporting your nomination. The award will be presented at the Catholic Schools Week all-school mass on Thursday, January 29, 2026. If chosen, your nomination submission may be read at mass.
