Counselor Programming
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe, a child abuse prevention curriculum, begins this month. K-8 students are taught that safe adults can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, or another identified and trusted adult. During our counseling lessons, students will be asked to identify who their safe adult is. Continue the conversation at home and ask who your child(ren) selected as their safe adult.
The topics and depth of concepts are tailored with age-appropriate language for students to understand. Over the course of the two lessons, all students will be taught the five safety rules:
Safety Rule #1 – “It’s MY body!”
Safety Rule #2 – “Ask an adult if I am safe.”
Safety Rule #3: “I have choices.”
Safety Rule #4: “Tell someone.”
Safety Rule #5: “It’s NEVER my fault.”
If you would like more information on Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe, and how to prevent child abuse, you can visit www.childhelp.org/SpeakUpBeSafe.
For the fourth year, the Archdiocese is using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). Through two lessons, the program teaches 6th-8th grade students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help for themselves or a friend. SOS is geared towards teaching your child(ren) how to save a life!
Through the program, students learn:
how to identify potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to a teacher or counselor about any concerns.
For additional information regarding SOS, please visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for additional information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
If you have any additional questions regarding either of these programs, or you would like to opt your student out of participation, please contact me directly at seaton@stgabriel.net.
Have a great weekend!

Fall MAP testing will begin next week. K-8 will take MAP Growth in Reading and Math, and grades 3-8 will also test Language. Please make an extra effort to ensure your child arrives on time, eats breakfast, and has a snack on testing days. While MAP is only one snapshot of how your child is doing, it does provide valuable data to help teachers plan instruction to meet your child's learning needs.

St. Gabriel School invites all 4th and 5th grade students to become School Safety Patrols. This stewardship project is a great opportunity to participate in our school community. Each morning, a group of approximately three students along with several adults, will greet students arriving during carpool drop off, and assist Kindergarten and Pre-K students. For more information, see Mrs. Lauder.
We are still seeing some students not in proper uniform. Please take advantage of the weekend to resolve any issues. Our approach to uniforms is that they are the student's personal responsibility. Paying attention to the little things adds up to the bigger things.

Shirts should be long enough to stay tucked in.
Socks may be black or white.

We foster a faith-filled sports environment and expect our coaches and teams to embody this philosophy. We have adopted Virtue=Strength-a Catholic program that engages the hearts and minds of our students.
Learn the Virtues. Love our Lord. Live the Faith.
ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO…
Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?
Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized?
Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?
We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. There are also separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights, and your faith story in a warm, accepting setting. For information, please contact Kathy Abell, Director of Faith Formation, by emailing kabell@stgabriel.net, or by calling (office) 502-239-5481 x 312 or (cell) 502-905-3795.
Fr. Jason will be taping Mass of the Air on Wednesday Sept 11. They are encouraging us to bring parishioners with us so that there's a good crowd and the people at home can hear people's responses to the mass. There are two masses taped each session. Some will receive Eucharist, some will just participate.
