Dear Parents/Guardians:
As the school counselor at St. Gabriel, it is my job to make sure students feel safe at school. One way I teach safety to all of our students is through bullying prevention lessons.
Sometimes the definition of bullying is misunderstood. According to StopBullying.gov, “Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time” (“What is Bullying”, https://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/index.html, 2017). The word bully is often overused in place for other types of aggressive behavior. As parents and guardians, keeping the lines of communication open with your students is a great place to start. For more information as to what you can do, please visit www.stopbullying.gov/what-you-can-do/index.html#parents. Also, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or me if you have concerns about your child's social interactions.
To show we are united in kindness, acceptance, and inclusion, our school wore orange for Unity Day on Wednesday. We want all students to feel safe at school- physical and emotionally. Thank you for your partnership.
Have a great weekend,
Sarah Eaton
School Counselor
