Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our school theme this year is "Be Kind". Research shows that most parents agree that developing kind and caring kids should be prioritized over kids’ achievements. However, according to a Harvard study, 80 percent of children think that their parents (and teachers) are more concerned about achievement or happiness than caring for others. This has been referred to as the "rhetoric/ reality" gap. The study goes on to say, "When children do not prioritize caring and fairness in relation to their self-concerns—and when they view their peers as even less likely to prioritize these values—there is a lower bar for many forms of harmful behavior, including cruelty, disrespect, dishonesty, and cheating." Our goal is to combat this mentality by creating opportunities for students to develop social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in a safe, supportive space. The foundation of our approach to SEL is rooted in the Catholic belief of the human dignity of every person.
Here are some ways our school is supporting students’ SEL:
SPIRIT virtues and school-wide expectations: Self-Control, Personal Responsibility, Integrity, Respect, Inclusion, Treating Others with Kindness
Friendzy: Biblically-based social-emotional skills development program
Virtue=Strength (partnership with athletics)
Monthly guidance classes with school counselor
Restorative behavior correction connected to SPIRIT
Increased supervision including addition of teacher and administration rotation at recess
Focus on growth mindset
Service-learning program based on Catholic Social Teaching
What can you do?
When your child seems frustrated or upset, validate their feelings. It’s ok for them to have negative feelings but assure them they will not always feel this way.
Coach them through determining the real issue and possible solutions to work through the issue instead of avoiding it or solving it for them.
Reflect on how you are modeling conflict resolution in front of your child. Do you speak negatively about others or raise your voice?
Consider the praise you are giving your child. Try praising process and persistence. Valuing process and persistence is part of embracing a growth mindset, which means believing that everyone can grow intellectually through effort. Article: Growth Mindsets: The Power of Praising Process and Persistence
Include your child in faith and service activities.
Social and emotional skills are learned over time. We invite you to partner with us as we help our students learn and grow how to model Christian behavior in their daily lives.
Have a wonderful weekend!
