Saint Gabriel School Weekly Newsletter for Parents
Saint Gabriel School Weekly Newsletter for Parents
Spring MAP testing began Tuesday, April 8. Please make an extra effort to ensure your child arrives on time, eats breakfast, and has a snack on testing days. While MAP is only one snapshot of how your child is doing, it does provide valuable data to help teachers plan instruction to meet your child's learning needs and evaluate our academic program. Students may bring mints on their testing days (no gum or other candy).
Our earth is one of the greatest gifts the Lord has given us. It provides its resources for our existence. To honor our planet, St. Gabriel Catholic School is celebrating Earth Day, April 22nd. Students are invited to use the checklist to check off the things they do to help our earth each day from Monday, April 14 to Monday, April 21.
Then bring this sheet back to your teacher on Tuesday, April 22nd. There will be a drawing for a $20 gift card from Target. Winners will be announced on Earth Day.
To further show your support of the earth, all students are invited to wear a green shirt with uniform bottoms to school on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Fatigue and Expectations
By Cheri Bunch, Reading Interventionist
“A child without education is like a bird without wings.” Tibetan Proverb
“Tests! Projects! Busy, busy!” a mom responded to my “How are you?” question the other day. Schedules can be very demanding, and we can find ourselves running in circles trying to get through it all. Extracurricular activities can nearly run us ragged. How is it possible to achieve success in all things?
When my daughter was growing up, she wanted to be in everything. She is grown now and has a child of her own, and when she reflects on her childhood, she always says she wishes she hadn’t pushed herself so hard. She wasn’t struggling so we allowed her to get involved with everything she wanted to try, thinking that it was good to expose her to many things. We didn’t even notice that it was too much.
While I think it is good to get children involved in sports, the arts, scouts, etc. I learned the hard way that it can be overdone. My suggestion is to choose the extras with care. I recommend evaluating and choosing which activities are worth the extra effort and which ones will have a lasting impact on your child.
Sometimes parents express to me, “We studied so much for this test, but they still didn’t do well.” Fatigue, anxiety, and diet are underlying factors that might be playing into the poor outcome. Ensuring there is time to rest, reflect, and eating enough protein are all ways to proactively combat these. There are times when busyness is unavoidable. In these moments, give your child grace, and give yourself grace.
What we do and how we react today impacts our children’s future. If we help them choose wisely, we will give them wings to soar.
