Warner, Daniel

Daniel WARNER (aft. 1645 - 1679) and Sarah ROE (? - aft. 1681)

my 8g-grandparents

Daniel WARNER, son of John and Margaret WARNER, was born in the late 1640s, either in Hartford or Farmington, CT.

Daniel WARNER marriages

WARNER, Daniel ( -1679) & 1/wf 2/wf Sarah? ROE?, dau Hugh; b 1667, b 1671; Farmington, CT

[NEM, p. 780]

Daniel WARNER was married twice, first in 1667 and second in 1671, Farmington. His second wife was Sarah ROE, daughter of Hugh ROE.

Based on the inventory of his estate, Daniel had 5 children, who were living at the time of his death: Daniel (1667), John (1671), Abigail (1673), Samuel (1675), and Thomas (1677). The eldest, Daniel Jr, must have been the child of the first wife, and the 3 youngest were children of the second wife, Sarah. The second child, John, might have been from either wife.

Daniel WARNER and his father, John WARNER, both of Farmington, signed in 1673 an agreement with a group of men who intended to settle their families in Mattatuck, which became known as Waterbury, CT. In the process of moving their households in 1679, both Daniel and his father died. The community quickly moved to pay Daniel's widow the £60 from the sale of his estate, and advised her to have a house built in Mattatuck, which she seems to have done. Some of Daniel's siblings also settled in Mattatuck. See the John WARNER page.

Relict of Daniel WARNER

John Warner, Sen., and Daniel Warner, father and son, whose names are in the first group, both intended to join the planters of Mattatuck, but died when about to remove, in 1679, in Farmington. The place of the father seems to have been filled by his son, Thomas Warner; while the death of the son gave rise to the following action of the committee, which conferred his rights upon his widow.

Farmington, November 26, 1679,

Where as Daniel Worner with his Family were upon the Remove to Mattatuck, And on that Juncture of time the Divine providence of God hath Removed the sd Daniell out of the Land of the Land of* the Living. Out of compassion to his Relict & children left behind him, we do Grant the sd Relict shall hold her Allottments Firm and Good to her self and children not with standing any thing Contained In any Former Article to the Contrary, only advising her Self and Relatives that a Dwelling house be Erected there with all possible Speed, and that Shee Inhabit there or some sufficient person to manage he[r] Lands & accommodations upon the place.

Coincidentally, John WARNER and John ROOTE, both of Farmington, were both 4g-grandparents of Sara (LEE) EATON, my 3g-grandmother. John ROOTE's daughter Mary married Isaac BRONSON, and they were also among the first settlers of Mattatuck, or Waterbury, CT. See the John 2800 ROOTE page.

Sarah (ROE) WARNER, widow of Daniel WARNER, had a 2-acre lot on the north side of West Main Street, Mattatuck.

Connection between Daniel WARNER of Farmington and Abigail WARNER who married Nathaniel LEE

The search for the parents of Abigail (WARNER) LEE has led me to Daniel WARNER.

Daniel WARNER of Farmington, Colony of Connecticut, died in 1679. There is not much of a will, indicating that he died unexpectedly. We have a one-page inventory, in which there is a list of children, and their ages.

Estate of Daniel WARNER

Warner, Daniel, Farmington. Invt. £51-07-00. Taken at Farmington by John Norton & John Woodruffe. Invt. £68-13-06 at Mattatuck. Taken by Samuel Hitchcock, Isaac Bronson, 1679. The children:

Daniel age 12 years, John 8, Abigail 6, Samuel 4, Thomas 2 years of age.

Court Record, Page 18—4 December, 1679: Adms. to Sarah, the Relict. John Langton to be Overseer. William Higginson owes this Estate £11-00-00.

[CPR, p. 375]

Daniel's daughter Abigaile was 6 in 1679, hence born about 1673. This is a perfect match for what little is known about Abigail WARNER, who married Nathaniel LEE. (See the Nathaniel LEE 1663 page.)

There is ample information about this Daniel WARNER, and even more about Daniel's father, John WARNER, of Farmington, CT. The connection between Daniel and Abigail still relies on one record, above. I had previously thought that Abigail's parents were Andrew WARNER and Rebecca FLETCHER. That was also based on one record, but the evidence for Daniel is more convincing. Thanks to Kristy OSTERGARD for bringing this to my attention.

1. Daniel WARNER Jr was born about 1667, in Farmington, CT, and died on 13 Sep 1713, at age about 46. He was the son of Daniel WARNER Sr and his first wife, whose name is unknown.

Daniel WARNER Jr

He settled in Waterbury, and came into the possession of the family right in the undivided lands. His first recorded grant of land was in Jan. 1689-90, about the period probably of his majority. In exchange for the family homestead, he received of Judd, about the time of his marriage, three acres at Stanley's Timber, so called, on the north side of the Farmington road, half a mile or more from the meeting-house. Here he built a house and lived. The lot, with two acres which had been added to it, was recorded in June, 1703, as five acres, more or less, with a dwelling-house, east on Ensign Stanley, west on Abraham Andruss, deed., north and south on highways. In June, 1705, Warner conveyed his house and lot to John Warner, son of Thomas, receiving in exchange lands at Judd's Meadow. Soon afterwards, he removed into the south part of the town, settling on or near Fulling-Mill Brook, sometimes called Daniel Warner's Brook. There he is known to have had a house in Aug. 1708. He was once or twice fence viewer, but held no important public office. His first wife, Mary Andruss, died April 10, 1709. He d. Sept. 13, 1713, being the last victim of the great sickness of that and the previous year. His widow, Mary, who was a daughter of Thomas Richason, was living in 1730. His sons, Samuel, Ebenezer and Abraham, settled at Judd's Meadow. [HB, p. 198]
