Medcalf, William 1743

William MEDCALF (1743 - 1798) and Amelia (bef. 1748 - aft. 1800)

William MEDCALF, father of my 5g-grandmother Milly (MEDCALF) ADAMS, was born about 1743, probably in or near the Welsh Tract, Prince Frederick's Parish, Craven (now Marlboro) County, SC. His parents were William METCALFE (many spellings) and Sarah BOSHER.

He received a grant of land in 1764 (see below), so he must have been at least 18 at that time, born no later than 1746. There does not seem to be any earlier record of him, so he probably wasn't much over 18. The birth date 1743 is a rough guess.

William's wife was Amelia, probably born before 1748, since her 1st child was born around 1760 to 1763. Nothing is known about her parents or siblings, her maiden name, or her birthplace. Some have said she was a Native American.

William died between 13 Feb 1797 and Jul 1798, in Anson County, NC. He left a will, naming his 9 children. Amelia gave all her remaining property to her son John in 1799, and lived with him in 1800. She probably died soon after.

William MEDCALF Controversy

There was another William MEDCALF, born 3 Mar 1740 in Church Hill, Queen Anne's, MD, and many researchers believe that he was the husband of Amelia, and father of Milly. Recent research by Chris METCALF has persuaded me otherwise. [MFT]

The William MEDCALF who received a land grant in 1764, on the Pee Dee River in SC, was still there in 1772. That is the last record of him in SC. In 1774 a William MEDCALF appeared, about 40 miles northwest, in Anson County, NC. These two must be the same person. It makes more sense than to assume he came from 400 miles to the northeast.

I usually try to arrange theses pages chronologically, from birth to death. However, the logic often proceeds in the opposite direction. In this case, I know much more about William and Amelia later in life than earlier. Evidence of their connection with Milly (MEDCALF) ADAMS also comes later. So the cart often appears before the horse.

The main difficulty in researching this family, compared with families farther north, is finding family connections. Fortunately, William named his 9 children in his will, including the married names of his daughters. Besides that, we have mainly circumstantial evidence. Heads of household who were listed consecutively in the census, and have the surnames MEDCALF, ADAMS, BRUMBELOW or THOMAS, could be related. Owners of land adjacent to one another could be related. Very little seems to be known with any certainty, especially for those who didn't live to be counted in the 1850 US Census.

William MEDCALF Lands in Craven County, SC

William MEDCALF received a land grant of 150 acres on south side of Pee Dee River in Craven County, SC. This land was surveyed 2 Oct 1764, certified 29 Oct 1764, granted 25 Apr 1765, memorialized 27 Jun 1765. See [MFT].

William's father was also William MEDCALF. He died before 5 Apr 1757, the date of a court case against the administrator of his estate. So the 1764 grant was for the younger William. As mentioned above, he must have been at least 18 by that time.

On 10 Sep 1772, William MEDCALF was mentioned in assessment of the Robert WEAVER estate, in Mars Bluff, on the Great Pee Dee River, SC. Thus he was probably still in SC at that date.

Annotated in red by Chris METCALF.

William MEDCALF's parents lived in the Welsh Tract, along the Pee Dee River, in northeastern SC, so William was undoubtedly born there, about 1743. (Another page is planned for them.) This was early in the settlement of SC by Europeans. Like most colonies, settlement began on the coast, and proceeded inland along the major rivers.

The Yadkin River in NC becomes the (Great) Pee Dee River, which flows generally southward, and forms the eastern boundary of Anson County, NC, and then flows through SC, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Georgetown, SC.

The Welsh Tract was part of Prince Frederick's District, formed in 1734, part of Craven County, SC. From 1769 to 1784 it was part of Cheraws District. The districts and counties were renamed and reorganized many times, but I am here interested the the period when William lived there. The region today lies in Marlboro, Chesterfield and perhaps also Darlington counties, SC.

Map annotated by Chris METCALF shows MEDCALF lands in Anson County, NC and northeastern SC.

William MEDCALF Lands in Anson County, NC

William MEDCALF disappeared from Craven County, SC around 1772, and another William MEDCALF appeared in Anson County, NC in 1774. As mentioned above, it seems highly likely that these are the same person, and not, as many researchers have claimed, the William MEDCALF from MD.

First US Census, 1790

The 1st US Census, taken in 1790, for Anson County, NC, lists 789 households, with 5,122 individuals. Only the names of the heads of households are recorded. Below are the records for 20 households of interest. Several families had 8 to 10 people, but there was only 1 slave.

William MADCALF [MEDCALF] had a family of 8, including his wife, 3 sons under 16, 2 daughters, and 1 slave. His sons, John and William Jr, are listed consecutively. Also next to them is the household of Elizabeth ADAMS, possibly related to Thomas ADAMS, husband of Milly MEDCALF.

There are 3 BRUMBELOW households, almost consecutive, and if William's daughters were still in Anson County, their husbands might have been Isaac, Edward, and/or Isaac Jr.

Miriam MEDCALF was married to a THOMAS, and there are 9 to choose from. John THOMAS is listed almost next to 2 MEDCALFS.

William's Will and Amelia's Gift

Transcription of William MEDCALF's will – North Carolina, Anson County; Record of Wills; 1802-1812; p. 104

William MEDCALF wrote his will on 13 Feb 1797, and it was proved in Jul 1798, in Anson County, so he died between those dates. He named his wife Amelia, and 9 children: John, Anney BRUMBELOE, William Jr, Joel, Emanuel, David, Miriam TOMAS, Amelia ADAMS, Lidia BRUMBELOE. It also mentions 2 slaves, Chloe and Dick.

Amelia MEDCALF gave all her property to her son John. This "deed of gift" was written 19 Jan 1799, proved Apr 1799 in Anson County, NC. She was in John's household in the 1800 US Census, and probably died soon after.

William MEDCALF Jr was born between 1760 and 1763 in Welsh Tract, and died 1845 in Clifton, Wayne, TN. He married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown, but it appears that she had one child, and died before 1790. William remarried, about 1795 in Anson County, to Mary Caroline THOMAS, born about 1775 in NC, died about 1841 in Maury, TN.

As mentioned above, William and family were listed consecutively with other MEDCALFs in the 1790 US Census for Anson County. His household was:

Thus in 1790, William had 2 sons and no wife. This is why I conclude that his 1st wife must have died before the census was taken in 1790.

William was a veteran of the American Revolution.

William's 2 sons who were under 16 in 1790 are not with the family in 1800. They either died or left home by that time. In 1800 they had 2 boys and 2 girls, all under 10.

William and his brother John were both in Jackson County, GA where they were on the tax list in 1809. William was taxed based on 150 acres of Hickory, on Cabbin Creek, adjoining Collens. Also 1 slave.

The family was probably still in Jackson County, GA in 1810. However, the 1810 US Census does not seem to have included GA. By 1820, William had moved his family to Maury County, TN. If the birthplaces below are correct, they were in Wayne County, TN in 1812, and Maury County, TN by 1816.

In 1840, William and Mary lived with their son, Joel METCALF, and his wife. The had no children, but 4 slaves.

As mentioned above, William had 2 sons by his 1st wife, who must have died by the time the 1790 US Census was taken. He had about 10 more children by his 2nd wife. Sons William and/or John could have been born before 1790, but if so, where were they in 1800? The birthdates are uncertain for most of those who didn't live to be counted in the 1850 US Census, which recorded the age of each family member.

Some of William's children changed the spelling from MEDCALF to METCALF. This spelling (and many others!) was sometimes seen in many records for this extended family. As people gained literacy, the customary spellings in each branch became more consistent.

The descendants of William and Mary moved on to IL, AR, MS and TX. Below is a tentative summary.

John MEDCALF was born about 1767 in Welsh Tract, and was still living in 1830 in DeKalb, GA. His wife's name is unknown.

John's date of birth is very uncertain. He was a head-of-household, apparently with a wife and daughter, in 1790, so surely born before 1772.

Nancy MEDCALF married Joseph HARRIS Jr, brother of my 4g-grandmothet, Sarah (HARRIS) ADAMS, wife of Salathiel ADAMS.

Anney MEDCALF was born about 1769 in Welsh Tract, and died about 1825 in NC. She married David BRUMBELOW, born 15 Dec 1750 in Richmond, Wise, VA, died about 1824 in Mecklenburg, NC.

The birth and death dates for Anney and David are hearsay. I don't have records to prove them. In his will (above), William MEDCALF calls one of his daughters Anney BRUMBELOE, and David is the best candidate for her husband.

Miriam MEDCALF was called Miriam TOMAS in her father's will. So her husband was named TOMAS or THOMAS. The candidate that seems likely is John W. THOMAS, who appeared in Anson County from 1790 to 1830. Some say he is the John W. THOMAS who appeared in Barbour County, AL in 1840, but I have not established the connection.

It is claimed that Miriam was born about 1771 in Welsh Tract, died 31 Jan 1871 in Eufaula, Barbour, AL. She married about 1790 in Anson, NC, to John William THOMAS, born about 1769 in Anson, NC, died 09 Feb 1853 in Barbour, AL.
