Scott, William

William SCOTT (1635 - 1718) and Hannah ALLIS

my 8g-grandparents

William SCOTT was born in England, about 1635, and his parents, Benjamin and Hannah SCOTT, immigrated to America, with their small children, about 1640. They settled in Braintree, Massachusetts Bay Colony. William moved to western Massachusetts in 1668, first to Hadley, and then Hatfield.

William married Hannah ALLIS on 28 Jan 1870. Hannah was the daughter of William and Mary ALLIS, or ELLIS. See the William ALLIS page, for maps and information about the ALLIS family.

William and Hannah lived in Hatfield, and had 10 children, probably all born in Hatfield.

Property in Hatfield, MA

William Scott's home lot at Hatfield was twenty rods wide on the east side of the street near the north end, opposite the homestead of Sergeant Benjamin Wait. It was lately owned by John Brown. William Scott had another grant January 16, 1671, and shared in the division of the common lands, having lot No. 65 in the first division; lot No. 40 in the second; lot No. 6 in the third; and lot No. 69 in the fourth. The two latter are now within the limits of the town of Whately. When he settled there were already thirty families in the town. [WMH, Vol. III, p. 8]

William SCOTT fought in the Battle of Turner's Falls, May 19, 1676, during King Philip's War. He was paid two pounds, sixteen shillings, for military expenses. His father-in-law, William ALLIS, Sr, was a Captain in this battle, and 3 of his sons also participated, one of whom, William ALLIS, Jr, was killed.

The Battle of Turner's Falls, also known as the Peskeompscut massacre or the Wissantinnewag massacre, involved an attack on an Indian encampment, which was at first successful, and resulted in the deaths of 100 to 200 Indians, mostly women, children and elderly. The Indians were able to mount a counterattack, and drove the English forces into the woods.

In response to this attack, the Indians began to attack English settlements, especially those on the west bank of the Connecticut River. The Hatfield massacre was one such attack, occurring on 19 Sep 1677. At that time, William and Hannah had 3 children: Josiah (6), Richard (3) and William Jr (10 months). They were lucky, and all survived.
