French, Samson 1742

Samson FRENCH Jr (1742 - 1834) and Lusannah "Lucy" ROOT (1752 - 1829)

my 5g-grandparents

Unless stated otherwise, data on this page comes from [MEB]. There is an ancestor chart for Samson, and a map of the towns of MA on the Sampson FRENCH Sr page. A map of the Castle Creek, Broome, NY area is on the James EATON page.

Early Life

Samson/Sampson FRENCH Jr was born about 15 Sep 1742 in Dunstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and died on 3 Jan 1834 in Glen Castle, Broome County, New York. His gravestone is in the Lilly Cemetery, Broome County, NY. The engraving in the picture is hard to read in places, but I trust that the transcriber was able to see that the death date was 3 Jan 1834 and that he died at age 91 ys 3 ms, and must have had to guess on the number of days.

Samson FRENCH married Lusannah ROOT, daughter of Elisha ROOT and Mary SCOTT, on 19 Oct 1768, in Westfield, MA. Their shared gravestone gives her date of death as 11 Sep 1829. As before, I will assume that the transcriber has seen more than the photo makes clear. She was born on 20 Sep 1752, so she was just past her 16th birthday at the time of her marriage. Samson was 26. Their first child was born on 22 Dec 1768, just 2 months after marriage. Basically, Samson impregnated a 15-year-old girl, and married her when she was 7 months pregnant. They went on to have 13 children, including Sarah (FRENCH) LEE, my 4g-grandmother. See the Nathaniel LEE page.

There has been some discussion of Sampson's birthplace.

Sampson FRENCH birthplace

Quoting Dr. S. H. French: "Take the case of the second Sampson. His father told him he was born in Dunstable and gave him the date. I believe the first Sampson knew when and where his son was born, and that he told the truth, and yet there is no record of such a birth in Dunstable." [MEB, p. 71]

Dunstable is in northern Massachusetts, currently on the border with New Hampshire. The original Township of Dunstable was larger, and was split up when the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was established in 1740, just before Samson was born. A more detailed description of Dunstable can be found on the John CUMMINGS page.

Military Service

Sampson Jr and Sr both fought in the French and Indian War. In 1758 they were both enlisted in Col. John OSGOOD's Regiment.

Sampson French Jr and Sr in the French and Indian War

Early in 1758, large preparations were made for a vigorous campaign. Three expeditions were planned, — the first to besiege Louisburg, the second to scour the Ohio valley, and the third to proceed against Ticonderoga and Crown Point,— all of them having in view as a grand object and aim, the reduction of Canada.

The following gleanings from the muster rolls of this year show that our town was well represented in the campaign : —

"RETURN of the Men inlisted for his Majesty's Service within the Province of the MASSACHUSETTS BAY in the Regiment whereof John Osgood Jun, Esq : is Colonel, to be put under the immediate Command of His Excellency JEFFRY AMHERST, Esqr: General and Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Forces in North America, for the Invation of CANADA."

Sampson French, enlisted 28 Mar 1758, in former expedition 1757, L. George, res. Haverhill, age 40

Sampson French Jur, enlisted 6 Apr 1758, in former expedition 1757, L. George, res. Haverhill, age 17

[GWC, pp. 351-2]

Samson Jr was listed as 17, but probably was only 15 or 16, and his father was 40. The record also says that they were both involved in a 1757 campaign in Lake George. This had been the scene of a major battle in 1755, and the 1757 campaign was probably just an occupation.

This establishes that they both resided at Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1758. Haverhill is in northeastern Massachusetts, not far from Dunstable.

Two Service Records

In the Muster Roll of Capt Joseph Smith, of Rowley, from Feb 14 to Dec 9, 1760, were ... Sampson French, Private, ent Apl 8 to Dec 12 [footnote: This was a “Batteaux Company.”]
[GWC p. 356]

The following is a list of the Haverhill names in the Muster Roll of Captain Edmund Mooers' Company, dated " from Nov 2, 1759 to January 7, 1761." ... Sampson French, entered to Nov 2, 1759 to Jan 5, 1761
[GWC p. 357]

It looks like the time intervals for the two Sampson FRENCHes overlap, so they must have both served past 1758. I don't know much about these military records, so maybe someone can tell me more.

Samson FRENCH was a Tory

You ask about the military history of our early ancestor, born 1742. In 1776 he was about thirty-four years old, his son Thomas about three years old, and his son Clement not yet born. Sampson was the only one who could have taken part in the Revolution, and he did not, for the reason that he was at heart a Tory. He did not take up either side actively, but said he thought the war was a mistake and King George's government good enough. My father told me he was drafted twice and each time furnished a substitute, which he could have done as he had considerable property. Some one ought to have punched this particular Sampson in those days, but he was six feet tall and had a red hot temper, so he escaped. But there is something to be said for our Sampson. As we look at it now, a man to be patriotic in 1776 must be willing to help destroy the regular government. In 1861 it was considered patriotic to support and defend the regular government. My own experience leads me to think that serving in the army as a soldier intensifies and renders more permanent attachment to and respect for a regular government. Now our Sampson enlisted in the British army under General Amherst and served in the war between England and France before the Revolution. Perhaps this experience helped color his later opinions.

Migration Summary

Samson FRENCH was born in Dunstable, MA and grew up in Haverhill, MA. Lucy ROOT was from Westfield. They were married in Westfield, 1768, and lived there until about 1790, when they appeared in Southwick, MA, just south of Westfield. By 1800 they were in Northampton, MA, and 1810 finds them in Florida, MA. In 1817 they moved to Decatur, Otsego, NY, and by 1820 they were in Chenango, Broome, NY, where they spent their old age.

Westfield, MA

On 19 Oct 1768, Samson FRENCH and Lusannah "Lucy" ROOT were married in Westfield, where most of their children were born. They moved several times in western MA, and NY.

Westfield was in Hampshire County until 1812, when Hampden County was formed. It is just 10 miles west of Springfield, on the west side of the Connecticut River. Westfield was first settled in 1660, so it was well-established by 1768. More discussion of Westfield can be found on the Thomas DEWEY Jr page.

The ancestors of Lucy ROOT had been in the Springfield area for several generations, including her great-grandfather Thomas ROOTE, who was in Westfield by 1670.

Southwick, MA

The First US Census in 1790 has the family in Southwick, just south of Westfield. Josiah, age 21 or 22, has already left home and started his own family, in Westfield. My comments are in brackets.

Move from MA to NY in 1817

From the old "Account Book" the following record is taken:

Samson French removed his family from Massachusetts to Decatur, Otsego county, New York, reaching the last mentioned place February 19, 1817.

[MEB p. 134]

Samson and family didn't stay long in Otsego County, as they are found in Broome County, NY in the 1820 US Census. Since his children were born in the period 1768-1795, they were all adults at the time of the move. It seems that at least Sarah, Thomas and Clement brought their families to Broome County, and many of their descendants are there to this day.

There is an obvious error, as Elizabeth has aged only 1 year from 1850 to 1860. I don't know which is correct.

Thomas FRENCH signed his will on 24 Apr 1860, and he died 21 Aug 1861, in Chenango, at age 88. In his will he states that he has been married to his present wife about 17 years, so they were married around 1842-3. Thomas would have been about 70 and Elizabeth about 51 or 60 at marriage.

4. Rebecca FRENCH was born 23 Dec 1774, and died 19 May 1776, age 17 months.

5. Ira FRENCH was born 24 Feb 1777 and died 11 Dec 1778, age 21 months.

6. Submit FRENCH was born 14 Dec 1778. She married (1) Festus MORGAN in Easthampton, Hampshire, MA on 20 Feb 1800, who died 23 Sep 1800. Their son was born 8 days later, on 1 Oct 1800, at the home of Samson FRENCH. Submit married (2) Phineas MERCHANT, born 1770-75, by whom she had more children. The family lived many years in Otsego county, New York; afterwards at Glen Castle, where Submit (FRENCH) MERCHANT died. [MEB, p. 106]

The 1800 US Census has Submit and Festus in Northampton, just before the birth of their son. Listed on the same page of the census were Josiah FRENCH, Sampson FRENCH and Nathaniel LEE.

Festus MORGAN was born 12 Jan 1776, son of Judah MORGAN and Elizabeth SHIVOY. [M, p. 73] They were close relatives of John Pierpont "JP" MORGAN, but I have not worked out the precise relationship.

There has been some conflation between Festus and his cousin, also Festus MORGAN. In [M, p. 80] Festus married Submit FRENCH in 1779, which is impossible since she was born in 1778. Also [M, p. 80] refers to the Festus who was born in 1759. Our Festus was "16 thru 25" in 1800, thus born approximately between 1775 and 1784.

The son of Submit and Festus was William Festus MORGAN, born 1 or 6 Oct 1800 in Northampton, MA. He "learned the trade of cloth finisher with Thaddeus Clapp, East Hampton. Mass., and began business as woolen manufacturer near South Milford, Mass., in Bellingham, where he resided at the formation of the Oxford Woolen Company, becoming part owner thereof in 1821.... was trustee of the Lynn Hospital, and five years its president; president of the Associated Libraries; director of Security National Bank and the Security Safe Deposit and Trust Co.; Trustee of the Lynn Five Cents Savings Bank." [M, p. 83]

William Festus MORGAN (1800 - 1839)

I have not found Submit or Phineas MERCHANT in the 1810 US Census. The household of Sampson FRENCH doesn't have a female aged 32.

By 1830 Phineas and his family of 8 were found in Chenango, Broome County, NY. Listed consecutively in the census were heads-of-household: Phineas MERCHANT (8), Sampson FRENCH (2), Nathaniel LEE (4).

This gravestone for William F. MORGAN (1800 - 1839) in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Essex, MA may be for the son of Festus and Submit (FRENCH) MORGAN.

It looks like Submit and Phineas had about 7 children, but I have not yet found their names. Phineas may have been a son of Capt. Jedediah MERCHANT, who settled in Cole's Hill, Colesville, Broome, NY in 1795.

7. A daughter, not named, was born 3 Jun 1780, and died 12 Jun 1780, age 9 days.

8. Lucy FRENCH born June 2, 1781, and died 28 Feb 1821. She married Michael TUTTLE on 21 May 1799 in West Springfield, MA. Michael was born 8 Aug 1773, and drowned August 21, 1816, while bathing in the Connecticut River. His gravestone in Elmwood Cemetery, Holyoke, Hampden, MA says he died at age 4?. Lucy's gravestone is next to Michael's. They had 2 children: Lois, who died at age 14, and a son. Lucy's gravestone has "Augustus, son of" at the bottom.

Several of the descendants of Clement FRENCH became notable physicians. Dr. Salphronius H. FRENCH (the one born in 1811) was a physician and surgeon, and his namesake nephew (born in 1837) was an even more famous surgeon, and banker. Dr. Lucius FRENCH was also a prominent physician in Davenport, IA. Dr. Kit Carson FRENCH was a physician in Lisle, MA.

Dr. Lucius FRENCH (1832 - 1910)

Kit Carson FRENCH

KIT CARSON FRENCH, M.D., a resident physician of Lisle, is abundantly qualified to fill the responsible position he occupies in this community, having a natural adaptation for his work, and possessing qualifications obtained by years of study and experience. He is a native of New York State, and was born at Glen Castle, Broome County, August 20, 1854. His father, Ebenezer S. French, who is now living with him, was born in Rowe, Franklin County, Mass., in 1810.

His grandfather, Clement French, a native of Southwick, Hampden County, Mass., was born September 20, 1783, and died at Glen Castle, N.Y., in 1866. He was an active, industrious man of his time, and moved to Deerfield, Mass., where he met, wooed, and won Elizabeth Hawks. They were married in 1803, and moved to Jefferson County, New York, settling at Sandy Creek. They brought with them their first-born, Franklin, then one year old, and commenced as pioneers in a wilderness. They had very little money, but had brave hearts and willing hands. They succeeded in obtaining fifty acres of heavily timbered land, and went to work with a will, built a log cabin, cleared some of the land, placed seed in the virgin soil, and in due time reaped the reward. They endured many privations, but bravely struggled on until they gained a footing and could realize the results of their labor. Two sons, Root and Ira, were here born to them. After three years, in which, under the existing circumstances, they had accomplished much, they were persuaded, somewhat against their will, by Mr. French's father, to return to Massachusetts, where they made their home at a point on the Deerfield River near the present Hoosac tunnel. There two more sons were born to them, Ebenezer S. and Salfronus II. About this lime the War of 1812 was declared, but on account of near-sightedness Mr. French was exempt from duty.

In impaired health and straightened circumstances, he found it hard to support his family; and for a time it was a question of what should be done. The problem was soon solved, however; for, assisted by some friends, he secured a team and wagon, and started out as a peddler of "Yankee notions" and tinware, he was successful, but not altogether satisfied with the business and its promises for the future. Having received glowing descriptions of the country near Chenango Point, now Binghamton, he sold his outfit, and, moving there, bought fifty acres, including four acres of cleared land and a log cabin. He hired a man to move the family; and, after a long, tedious trip of about two hundred miles, they arrived at the new home June 1, 1814. Thus they began again their experience in frontier life, and did not have by any means an easy time, particularly during the season of 1816, when there were heavy frosts every month of the year. His grown sons helped to clear and pay for his farm near Binghamton, now owned by the Doctor's father; and in 1831 he built a good frame dwelling, which is still standing.

Mrs. Elizabeth Hawks French, who was a noble Christian woman, and endured the hardships incident to a pioneer life with fortitude, died November 1, 1864. Of the children, Franklin French was a farmer at Glen Castle, where he died in his eighty-fourth year, leaving a large family; Ira French, a farmer near Castle Creek, died in his eighty-sixth year; Root French, a farmer of the same town, worked himself to death in middle life; Ebenezer is the Doctor's father, above named; Salfronus was a practising physician of Lisle many years. Anna Seward, who became the wife of Ebenezer S. French, was a daughter of Orrin and Mehitable (Livermore) Seward, and was born at Glen Castle in July, 1811. Her parents were both of New York State, and were among the early settlers in this vicinity, coming here when children with their parents. Here their acquaintance began, when she was four years old; here the first story of love was told; here they grew up together, were married, and lived in that sacred relation for sixty-three years. After their marriage, July 4, 1830, they settled on his father's farm near Glen Castle, which was the same place of one hundred and sixty-five acres that was purchased in 1808 and occupied in 1809, and is still in the family. The children of Ebenezer and Anna S. French were: Hepsey French, who died in 1885, past middle life, at home; Lucius French, M.D., of Davenport, la.; Olive, wife of Charles A. Wood, of Castle Creek; Betsey, wife of H. M. Stanford, a farmer of this town; Mary, wife of Isaac Howland; and Kit Carson.

The latter, who is the subject of this sketch, received his elementary education in the schools of Glen Castle and of Lisle; and his professional course of study was completed at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City, he being one of the graduates of 1887. The active practice of his profession commenced here, where he succeeded to the work of Dr. H. C. Hall, having purchased the house of that gentleman. He was married January 2, 1876, to Nina E. Keeler, a lady of intelligence and cultivation, daughter of S. M. and Mira (Pratt) Keeler.

The Doctor is a Master Mason and a Republican. Fraternally and socially, he is a genial gentleman, and, politically, adheres tenaciously to what he feels to be right. He has his ideas, and speaks them; his opinions, and asserts them; his beliefs, and adheres to them. But in all his intercourse with his fellow men he is kind and generous, not given to severe criticism, although speaking plainly his mind when occasion demands. He has a sound body and a clear mind, two essential characteristics in the make-up of a physician. He is full six feet in height, with a weight of two hundred pounds. He possesses in a marked degree many of the finer feelings of human nature, and is ever ready to administer to the needs of suffering humanity in such measure as he is able.

10. Clara FRENCH was born 7 Sep 1785, and died 6 Mar 1786, at age 5 months.

11. Clarissa FRENCH (second) was born 22 Sep 1788, in West Springfield, and died on 11 Jun 1827, also in West Springfield. She married on 26 Dec 1805 in West Springfield, to Henry TUTTLE, brother of Michael TUTTLE. Henry was born 4 Sep 1783 in Holyoke, Hampden, MA, and died 5 Sep 1851, also in Holyoke. Their gravestone in Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, Hampden County, MA also has birth and death dates for two single daughters, Almeron and Lucy.

Clarissa and Henry were 17 and 22 when they were married. They lived in West Springfield, and raised a large family. Clarissa died at age 38, leaving Henry with 8 children still living. Henry then married Lydia BRACKETT, and they had 1 more child.

They are called Clarissa and Henry in most records, but in [MEB, p. 119] they are Clara and Harry.

Incidentally, Harry TUTTLE is the name of a fictional character in the 1985 movie Brazil, played by Robert De Niro. No connection, I'm sure!

The 1850 US Census has two TUTTLE families in one dwelling, in Holyoke. Henry TUTTLE and his 2nd wife, Lydia, appear to have two children, Almorin and Lydia L. Also Henry's daughter Marie (TUTTLE) ROOT is without her husband, but she has a son, his namesake, John R. ROOT. Henry's daughter Charlotte (TUTTLE) WILLIAMS is also without he husband, but has a daughter, Elizabeth WILLIAMS. Henry's son Augustus F (or T) TUTTLE has a wife and son. Henry is owner of a good-sized farm.

12. Julia FRENCH was born 25 Aug 1792, and died 29 May 1793, at age 9 months.

13. Charlotte FRENCH was born 10 Jan 1795, and died 1853 in Washington, D.C. On 12 Sep 1814 at Northampton, MA, she married Ezra WILLIAMS, born 31 May 1790.

The family moved to Westford, Otsego, NY between 1816 and 1819, then to Detroit, Wayne, MI in the mid 1820s, and on to Washington, DC in 1845. [MEB, p. 119] It seems that they tried again with the name David.

Daniel and David were either twins, or the same person. David's gravestone, in Elmwood Cemetery, Holyoke, Hampden, MA appears to read: "DAVID son of EZRA and Charlotte Williams died May 2, 1816 ?? 6 months". So he was born in Oct or Nov 1815. Daniel, according to [MEB, p. 119], was born 14 Nov 1815, and died 26 May 1816.

In 1810 Ezra WILLIAMS was single, but head-of-household. The family of 6 included a female 26-44, probably Ezra's mother.

By 1820 Ezra and Charlotte had a family of 6, in Westford, Otsego, NY. Of the 6, there were 2 young adults, probably a brother and sister of Ezra or Charlotte. So they had a boy and a girl, both under 10.

In the 1830 US Census, it looks like the same family is in Chautauqua County, NY. The household still has 4 adults, about 10 years older than they were in 1820.

The 1840 Census has the family in Detroit. In 1850 Charlotte was living with her sister Lydia (FRENCH) TUTTLE's family in Holyoke (see above). Ezra had probably died before 1850.

The "Account Book" of Samson French Jr. contains the following reference to this family: "My daughter today —Williams —with her two sons, David and Arthur, and they arrived here on Saturday Sep. 29, 1832, about 10 of the clock, and left here on Monday at 8 of the clock and I parted with them for last time & I never expect to see them any more so farewell." [MEB, p. 119]

Col. David Henry WILLIAMS (1819 - 1891)

David Henry WILLIAMS was born 19 Mar 1819 in Otsego County, NY, and moved to Detroit, MI with his parents, and married Mary Eliza STEEVENS in Waterford, Oakland, MI on 3 Sep 1835. He was a railroad surveyor for 10 years, and was made a judge and sat on the bench in Detroit. Moving on to Washington, DC with his parents and his own family, he worked as a clerk in the office of the Secretary of War.

David was a volunteer in the Mexican-American War, and was promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Civil War, serving in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He was appointed a Brigadier General in 1862, but it was never confirmed by Congress, so his highest official rank was Colonel.

He resigned from the Army in 1863, and settled in Allegheny City, now part of Pittsburgh, PA. Said to be a frequent contributor to local newspapers, I have not yet found any of his articles. He was also said to be a professor of engineering, but at which school?

GEN. D. H. WILLIAMS DEAD.

HIS LONG SICKNESS ENDED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

The Deceased Was One of the Best Known Citizens.

General David Henry Williams died yesterday afternoon at 3:20 o’clock at the residence of Henry H. Smith, No. 156 Sheffield Street, Allegheny. The end was expected, and nearly all the near relatives were present. Mr. Williams had been in bad health since last January, and in February had a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. He had scarcely been conscious for several days, and apparently death was easy.

The deceased was one of the best known residents of the two cities. He was a member of Post 3, G. A. R., as well as other veterans’ organizations. The funeral services will be held this evening at 8 o’clock. Mr. Williams was a member of Emmanuel church, Allegheny, and the services will be conducted by Rev. M. Byllesby of that church. A wife (who was Mary Elizabeth Edgar), with three sons and three daughters, survive. The sons are: W. E. Williams of Allegheny, E. David Williams and H. S. Williams of Chicago. The daughters are: Mrs. Henry H. Smith, Mrs. Charles P. Smith and Mrs. Bert S. Smith.

General Williams was born in Otsego county, New York, March 19, 1819. At the age of 18 he removed to Detroit, where for 10 years he was engaged as a civil engineer on various railroads. He participated in the Mexican war and afterward came to Pittsburgh and was engaged in mechanical engineering pursuits when the war of the rebellion broke out. He organized the Eighty-Second Pennsylvania regiment, becoming its colonel, and took part in the battles of the Peninsula and Maryland campaigns. He was recommended for promotion for gallant service by Generals Graham, Abercrombie, Couch, Keyes and McClellan, and was promoted to be brigadier general November 29, 1862. He was a brave soldier and ranked high as a disciplinarian. Few men were better informed on general topics than General Williams, and he was a frequent contributor to the press.

DNA Evidence

My close matches (i.e., distant cousins) on AncestryDNA include 20 members who trace their ancestry back to Samson FRENCH and Lucy ROOT. Of these 20, 15 were descendants of Sara (FRENCH) LEE, my 4g-grandmother. The other 5, shown in the chart below, provide good evidence that I am also a descendant of Samson and Lucy.
