Hubbell, Richard Sr

Richard HUBBELL (1626 - 1700) and Elizabeth MEIGS (? - 1665)

my 9g-grandparents

Richard HUBBELL was born about 1626 in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. This is about 10 miles south of Birmingham. His parents were Richard HUBBALL and Elizabeth WAKEMAN. He may have come to America with his uncles, John WAKEMAN and Samuel WAKEMAN.

Samuel WAKEMAN came to America in the ship Lion, under Captain Pierce, in Nov 1631. John WAKEMAN was first mentioned in America in the list of Freemen, on records of the "Courte of Newhaven," held on 4 Jun 1639.

Records of Richard HUBBELL first appeared in New Haven Colony, where he took the oath of fidelity on 7 Mar 1645. He married 3 times, and had 15 children, and 3 step-children.

In 1650 or 1651 he married Elizabeth MEIGS, daughter of John MEIGS, and granddaughter of Vincent MEIGS, who had emigrated from Dorcetshire, England. Richard and Elizabeth had 9 children, and Elizabeth died about 1665.

Richard HUBBELL removed about 12 miles east, to Guilford, CT and purchased land there on 25 Feb. 1653. He was tried & fined for sedition in New Haven in 1656. When asked if he was sorry for giving his name to a seditious paper, he replied, "that it was only his desire to have what our law did allow, & no more." He soon after removed to Fairfield, where he was accepted to be made a freeman of the town 13 Oct 1664, and was made a freeman 10 Oct. 1669. He settled northwest of the plateau at Pequonnock, and purchased the home-lot of Thomas WHEELER Sr. [HF, Vol. I, p. 379]

The name of Richard's 2nd wife is not know, but her gravestone records her 1st initial E and date of death 1688. She had 4 children with Richard.

His 3rd wife was Abigail, widow of Joseph WALKER of Stratford, CT. She had 3 WALKER children, and had 2 children with Richard.

Richard HUBBELL died on 23 Oct 1700, and is buried next to his 2nd wife. His 3rd wife, Abigail, died in 1718.

There are a couple of oddities in the data contained in [HH2]. It seems that Richard had two sons named Samuel, by his 1st and 2nd wives. They both had wives named Elizabeth, but different children. There may be some confusion.
