Bushnell, Francis

Francis BUSHNELL (1580 - 1646) and Ferris QUYNELL (1587 - 1628)

my 9g-grandparents

Francis BUSHNELL was born about 1580, probably in Berkshire, England, and died 11 Feb 1646 in Guilford, CT. He married (1) on 13 May 1605 in Horsham, Sussex, England to Ferris QUYNELL,, who was baptized 17 Apr 1587 in Horsham. They had 11 children in Horsham, 4 of them dying in childhood. Ferris died, probably in childbirth, and was buried in Horsham on 10 Mar 1627/28, along with her baby, Elizabeth. [GEB, p. 25]

Francis married (2) on 2 Jun 1629 in Horsham, to Joane KINWARD, and she died after about 2 years of marriage, with no children, and was buried on 21 Jun 1631 in Horsham. [HFS, vol 2, pp. 511-31]

Some have claimed that Francis married (3) Rebecca Holmes, in America, but no record of this has been found. In any case, all his 11 children were born to his 1st wife, Ferris QUYNELL, in Horsham. [GEB, p. 25]

Ferris QUYNELL was probably the daughter of Henry QUYNELL and Beatrix CARTER, of Horsham. Henry was Henry III, as his father and paternal grandfather were also Henry QUYNELL or QUENELL. [HFS, vol 2, pp. 531-3]

Horsham, England is 31 miles SSW of London, in Sussex (now in West Sussex), as shown in this 1812 map.

Immigration

Of the 7 children of Francis and Ferris did not die in early childhood, 5 sons emigrated to New England separately in 1635 and 1636, settling in Salem, MA. Francis and his 2 daughters immigrated in 1639, and were among the earliest settlers of Guilford, New Haven Colony. Within a few years, 3 of the sons, with their families, joined their father and sisters in Guilford.

Francis BUSHNELL Jr immigrated with his wife and child, on The Planter, with Nicholas TRERICE, Master. They left England on 6 Apr 1635 and arrived in Boston on 7 Jun 1635. Francis was 26, listed as a carpenter. His wife was 26, and their daughter was 1. In 1637 he was granted land in Salem, MA, but in 1640 he settled in Guilford, CT where his father and sisters had arrived the previous year (see below). [GEB, p. 31]

William and Richard BUSHNELL may have traveled with their brother, Francis Jr, but at any rate, they seem to have immigrated at about the same time. William was 24 and Richard was 12 in 1635. The three brothers all went to Guilford before 1646.

John BUSHNELL also immigrated in the spring of 1635, on the ship Hopewell. He was 21 and single, and settled in Salem, with his brothers, and it seems he did not go to Guilford, but lived in Boston. [GEB, p. 37] In the ship's manifest he is a glazier (glass worker). [JCH, p. 49]

Edmund BUSHNELL, son of Francis and Ferris, was still in England on 21 Sep 1635, but left shortly thereafter, as he received a grant of land in Boston under the Act of Nov 1635. He must have traveled, with his wife and 2 small children, on the ship True Love. Edmund was 29 or older, his wife Martha's age is unknown, and the children were 5 and 3. Edmund died in Boston on 28 Mar 1636, and his wife and children remained in Boston.

More than 3 years passed, with Francis and his 2 daughters in Horsham, and his 5 sons and their families in Boston, or Salem.

Francis BUSHNELL and his daughters, Sarah and Rebecca, emigrated about 20 May 1639, in the company of Rev. Henry WHITFIELD, aboard the ship St. John. The passengers were soon to become the first settlers of Guilford, Colony of New Haven. While at sea, on 1 Jun 1639, the company formulated a covenant, pledging mutual assistance, sometimes called the "Guilford Covenant" or "The Plantation Covenant," which was signed by Francis BUSHNELL, and the Rev. John HOADLEY, who later married Sarah BUSHNELL.

They landed at Fair Haven, CT between 10 and 15 Jul 1639. In Sep 1639 the deed was signed for their new settlement at Menunkatuck, purchased of the Quinipiac Indians, which they named Guilford. The original town had 40 people, of whom 28 were heads of families, and 25 were signers of the covenant. [HFS, vol 2, p. 516]

Francis BUSHNELL Sr owned a 2.5-acre lot in Guilford, at the corner of Broad and Fair streets, that was formerly owned by Judge Samuel FOWLER (my 7g-uncle), and later owned by Dr. G. P. REYNOLDS. [HFS, vol 2, p. 516]

Legacy of Francis BUSHNELL

We regret that not more is known of the Francis Bushnell above named; for one of his daughters marrying, Rev. John Hoadley became, as we know, the ancestor of two distinguished English bishops, while a second daughter, Elizabeth, who married William Johnson, was the ancestor not only of the Governors of Vermont mentioned, but also of Dr. Samuel Johnson, first President of Kings, now Columbia College, whose son, William Samuel Johnson, was one of the earliest to move in favor of American Independence, was a member of the convention framing our national Constitution and with Oliver Ellsworth, Roger Sherman and other Connecticut born members exerted that potent influence which led to the adoption of the Connecticut idea of government as the basis of that Constitution. William Samuel Johnson also became the first United States Senator from Connecticut under the new compact.

Cornelius S. Bushnell, whose name was honorably connected with the building of the "Monitor," and therefore with one of the critical moments of our Civil War, was a lineal descendant of Francis Bushnell. What name among the forty planters has been more honored through his descendants than that of Francis Bushnell?

[G250, p. 225]

The passage above contains a slight error. Elizabeth BUSHNELL, daughter of Francis Sr, died in infancy, and is buried with her mother. It was Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Jr, who married William JOHNSON.

In most cases, baptism probably took place a few days after birth, and in any case, the baptism date gives an upper bound for the birth date. Of course, burial took place within a few days after death. The vital records reflect the fact that baptism and burial were often considered more significant than birth and death.

1. Edmund/Edward BUSHNELL was baptized 27 Apr 1606 in Horsham, and died 28 Mar 1636 in Ten Hills Farm, Boston, MA, age 29 or more. He married Martha HALLOR on 2 Aug 1627 in Horsham. She died before 16 Nov 1668 in Boston, MA.

Edmund and Martha had their 1st 4 children in Horsham. The 1st and 4th died in infancy, and were buried in Horsham. The other 2 children, Edward and Elizabeth, were about 5 and 3 when they accompanied their parents on the ship True Love, arriving in Boston in Oct or Nov 1635. Edmund's brothers had already been in Boston for a few months.

In Nov 1635 Edmund received a grant of land in Boston, but this grant was cancelled the following March, probably because he had failed to build a house on the property, as required by the agreement. Instead, he went into the service of Gov. WINTHROP, at Ten Hills Farm, about 3 miles northwest of Boston, where he died on 28 Mar 1636. [GEB, p. 29]

John WINTHROP, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 4 separate terms between 1630 and 1649, was owner of Ten Hills Farm, which later became famous as a center of the slave trade in New England. It was purchased in 1732 by Isaac ROYALL.

Edmund/Edward BUSHNELL came to Gov. WINTHROP highly recommended, and seemed to have a promising future, until his untimely death. Edward HOPKINS and Philip NYE both wrote letters to Gov. WINTRHOP, attesting to his character and competence.

[Winthrop Papers, Vol. III, pp. 209-11]

After Edmund's death, Martha was granted land of her own. First, on 25 Jan 1636/37, she had a grant of land in Boston for a house and garden. Then on 19 Feb 1637/38, she was granted land for a farm at Mt. Wollaston, in what is now Quincy, about 10 miles south of Boston.

Martha was left with 2 children, ages 6 and 4, and another was born in Jun 1636, just 2 or 3 months after Edmund died.

Martha (HALLOR) BUSHNELL was admitted to the First Church of Boston on 3 Feb 1638/39, and on 17 Feb 1638/39 she presented her daughter, Mary, for baptism, at age 2 years and 8 months.

Martha married by 1644 [GM, Vol. 1, p. 508] to Ensign William BEAMSLEY, the 2nd marriage for both. They had a child, Abigail BEAMSLEY, born 8 Feb 1646. Abigail must have died young, as she is not mentioned in her father's will, dated 14 Sep 1658.

William BEAMSLEY was an innkeeper and distiller, and a Member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston. His property is lot 557 on this 1648 map of Boston, in the lower right, an area known a Mill Field. William died on 29 Sep 1658, and Martha apparently took over the business to some degree, as she applied on 26 Jan 1662/63 seeking a licence for "stilling strong watters and retailing of the same, considering it hath ben a former imployment of her family releafe”. Martha died, probably before 16 Nov 1668, as her property was sold on that date, to Key ALSOP, with no mention of her.

Very little is known of Edward BUSHNELL, the son of Edmund and Martha. He was baptized 10 Dec 1629 in Horsham, and at least 5 years old on the voyage to America. He was mentioned in his step-father's will, written 14 Sep 1658, and he was named in connection with the sale of his mother's property, on 16 Nov 1668.

2. Francis BUSHNELL Jr was baptized 08 Jan 1608/09 in Horsham, and died 4 Dec 1681 in Saybrook, CT. He married Marie GROMBRIDGE on 27 Jun 1631 in Horsham. Mary was baptized in Horsham on 7 Jan 1605/06, the daughter of Thomas GROMBRIDGE (or GROOMBRIDGE, GRUMBRIDGE) and Ann IVE. She died about 1660, in Saybrook, CT. They had 7 children: the first 2 in Horsham, 2 more in Salem, MA, and the last 3 in Guilford, CT.

The 1st child died in infancy. With their daughter, the young couple came to America, perhaps with Francis' brothers. Francis (26), Marie (26), and Elizabeth (1) arrived in Boston on 7 Jun 1635 (as described above), and they soon moved to Salem, MA, and 2 children were born there.

On 8 Feb 1637 Francis BUSHNELL Jr was granted 24 acres of land on Muddy River, in Salem. This seems to indicate that the family had 6 members, as lots at Muddy River, were granted according to the number of heads in the family ("those that face the river between the foot of the hill and the river, four acres upon a head and those that are further off, to have five acres upon a head."). Martha, daughter of Francis Jr and Marie, was born about 1637, but the next known child, Sarah, was born about 1639, in Salem. So Francis Jr and Marie had 2 known children in 1637. It may be that Francis Jr's brothers, William (26) and Richard (14), were living under the same roof, and were counted as part of the family.

About 1640, Francis Jr moved his family to Guilford, CT where his father and sisters had arrived the previous year. His brothers William and Richard also moved to Guilford by the time of their father's death, in 1646. [GEB, p. 31]

On 22 May 1648 the Guilford Court proposed that Francis BUSHNELL Jr take over the operation of the mill, after the death of Thomas HORTON, the town miller. Francis agreed, provided that he received the same toll as the former miller, and that he would be exempt from military training. The Court did not accept these terms, but Francis may still have run the mill for some time.

In Nov 1648, Thomas JONES filed suit in Guilford against Goodwife BUSHNELL, saying her hogs had damaged his corn.

Francis Jr had 200 acres in the Oyster River quarter of Saybrook, CT in 1648 or 9. Exactly when he moved his family to Saybrook is unclear, but he and Marie were there in 1659 or 60, and Marie must have died about this time.

Francis was called as an expert witness, at General Court held at New Haven on 28 Feb 1658, to testify as to the repairs and improvements needed at the New Haven dam and mill. [GEB, p. 31]

Francis BUSHNELL Jr remarried late in life, about 1660, to Grace (WELLS) NORTON, widow of Thomas NORTON, of Guilford. There are no known children from this union. Coincidentally, Grace and Thomas were my 9g-grandparents. So Francis BUSHNELL's niece Abigail BUSHNELL married Capt. John SEWARD, grandson of Grace WELLS.

John SEWARD Jr was my 6g-grandfather. His g-grandmother, Grace (WELLS) NORTON, married late in life, to his g-uncle, Francis BUSHNELL Jr, son of Francis and Ferris.

Elizabeth BUSHNELL, daughter of Francis Jr and Marie, was baptized in Horsham on 2 Feb 1633/34, probably born shortly before that date. She came to America at age 1 with her parents, and lived from age 1 to 6 in Salem, MA, residing thereafter in Guilford. She married William JOHNSON, town clerk, grammar school teacher, mapmaker, militia leader, judge, who became a deacon of the church, and was Deputy to the General Court several times between 1655 and 1694. William JOHNSON was born about 1630, son of Robert and Adaline JOHNSON, among of the founders of the New Haven Colony. Elizabeth and William married on 2 Jul 1651 in Guilford, when she was 17 and he about 21. Elizabeth died on 26 Apr 1672 in Guilford, at age 38, having given birth to 12 children. William lived another 30 years, and died on 27 Oct 1702.

Samuel JOHNSON was born in Guilford on 5 Jun 1670, son of William JOHNSON and Elizabeth BUSHNELL. He married on 7 Nov 1694 to Mary SAGE, born 15 Nov 1672, daughter of David SAGE and Mary WILCOX, of Middletown, CT. They had a large family, including a son Samuel Jr, and a daughter Mary.

Samuel JOHNSON Jr was born 14 Oct 1696 in Guilford, the son of Samuel JOHNSON Sr and Mary SAGE. He became an influential clergyman, educator, linguist, encyclopedist, historian, and philosopher. He was the first president of the Anglican King's College, which was renamed Columbia University following the American Revolution.

[He is easily confused with Samuel JOHNSON (1709–1784), an English literary figure and compiler of A Dictionary of the English Language, often referred to as "Dr. Johnson."]

William Samuel JOHNSON was born 7 Oct 1727 in Stratford, CT, the son of Samuel JOHNSON Jr and Charity Floyd NICOLL. Before the Revolution, William served terms in the Connecticut legislature as well as the supreme court. He was an influential delegate at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787. He was a signer of the Constitution of the United States, and a US Senator, representing the state of Connecticut. His daughter, Elizabeth, married Daniel Crommelin VERPLANCK, a member of the US House of Representatives, from New York.

Mary JOHNSON was born in Guilford on 8 Mar 1699, daughter of Samuel JOHNSON Sr and Mary SAGE. She married Ebenezer CHITTENDEN, and they raised a family in Guilford. Their son Thomas CHITTENDEN, born 6 Jan 1730, lived in Vermont, where he played a major role in the state's early history. Thomas moved to what is now Vermont in 1774, and was the first settler in the town of Williston. Vermont applied for statehood in 1776, but was rejected by the Continental Congress. So Vermont became an independent republic in 1777, in which Thomas was the first president, from 1778 to 1789. When Vermont became a state in 1790, he was the first Governor, serving until his death in 1797. His son, Martin CHITTENDEN, represented Vermont in the US House of Representatives, and served a term as Governor of Vermont. Martin's sister, Mary CHITTENDEN, married Jonas GALUSHA, who also served 2 terms as Governor of Vermont.

3. William BUSHNELL was baptized on 3 Feb 1610/11 in Horsham, and died 12 Nov 1683 in Saybrook, CT. He married Rebecca CHAPMAN, about 1643. She died before 1683.

William and Rebecca were my 8g-grandparents. See the William BUSHNELL page.

4. Stephen BUSHNELL was baptized 31 Jan 1612/13 in Horsham, and buried 12 Mar 1624/25 in Horsham, age 12.

5. John BUSHNELL was baptized 23 Apr 1615 in Horsham, and died about 5 Aug 1667 in Boston, MA. He married Jane, about 1650. They lived in Boston, and had 7 children, at least 3 of whom died in childhood. After John died, Jane remarried, to John HILL, and they had at least 1 son.

As mentioned above, John HILL was a glazier (glass worker), who was about 21 and single in the spring of 1635, when he came to Boston on the ship Hopewell. He settled in Salem with his brothers, where he had a grant of land on 25 Dec 1637. He was paid 7s. 4d. on 15 Jan 1637/38 for glassing the meeting house windows, and a year later, he became a member of the town of Salem. He did not go to Guilford with his brothers, but instead returned to Boston, where his name appears on a bill of sale dated 1 Feb 1648/49.

About 1650, probably in Boston, John BUSHNELL married Jane. Nothing seems to be known about Jane before 1650.

A court document from Boston, dated 10 Dec 1650, has John BUSHNELL as a witness, aged about 40, so perhaps he was born about 1610. In that case, it is curious that he was not baptized until 23 Apr 1615, when his brother Stephen was baptized 31 Jan 1612/13.

About 1655, he bought a very small property on Dock Square, in Boston. The lot measured 13 ½ ft wide and 50 ft deep, and lies on the present site of 3 and 4 Dock Square, on the northwest side of Faneuil Hall. Here he built a tiny house, which stood until 1752.

John BUSHNELL died in Boston on 5 Aug 1667. His homestead was valued at £140. His widow was supposed to be administrator of his will, but she had already left the jurisdiction of the Court soon after his death, going to Saybrook, CT, according to a court records. Apparently she took her baby William (almost 1 year), but left behind John Jr (about 3), Jane (4), and Sarah (12). The "town records show an order to Goodwife Alexander to deliver the ch. of Wid. Bushnell to Hope Allen, to relieve the town from charge thereby." [GEB, p. 37]

8. Rebecca BUSHNELL was baptized 15 Apr 1621 in Horsham, and died before 11 Feb 1646/47. She married about 1646 in Guilford, New Haven Colony to John LORD, born about 1625, son of Thomas LORD and Dorothy BIRD. Thomas LORD was one of the original proprietors of Hartford, CT.

Rebecca was living at the time of her father's death, shortly before 11 Feb 1646, but she died soon after, since on 11 Feb 1647, John LORD referred to certain items in the estate of Francis BUSHNELL Sr, "as were remaining in ye hands of Rebecca at the time of her decease."

No children of Rebecca and John are known, which is not surprising, since they were married such a short time.

John LORD remarried, to Adrean BAYSEY/BASEY, of Hartford, but left her and went to Appomattox, Virginia, where he took up farming, and was still living in 1663. [GEB, p. 26]

9. Richard BUSHNELL was baptized 20 Apr 1623 in Horsham, and died between 1 Dec 1659, when his will was written, and 17 Jul 1660, when his estate was inventoried, in Norwalk, CT. He married Mary or Marcy MARVIN on 11 Oct 1648 in Hartford, CT. After Richard died, Mary married Thomas ADGATE.

Richard immigrated about 1635 or 6, so he was perhaps 12, or a little older. He probably traveled with his older brothers, Francis and William, as described above. Mary MARVIN immigrated with her parents, Mathew and Elizabeth MARVIN, and 4 siblings on the Increase, which embarked from the port of London on 15 Apr 1635, bound for New England, under the command of Mr. Robert LEA. [Also on the same voyage were John WARNER, my 9g-grandfather, and Thomas and Frances (MOODY) KILBOURN, my 10g-grandparents, with 5 of their children.] The MARVINs were among the earliest settlers in Hartford.

Richard was at John WINTHROP's garrison at Saybrook Fort, under Lyon GARDINER, during the Pequot War (Jul 1636 – Sep 1638) and this suggests that he was (and presumably, his brothers were) in Saybrook by 1638, before his father and sisters arrived in Jul 1639.

The MARVIN family left Hartford and settled in Norwalk, CT, where about 1655 Richard BUSHNELL was granted a £200 lot, next to that of his father-in-law, Mathew MARVIN.

Richard BUSHNELL Jr was born Sep 1652 in Norwalk, CT. He married his step-sister, Elizabeth ADGATE on 7 Dec 1672. They lived in Norwich, CT and had 4 children. Richard was very active in politics. He represented Norwich in the General Court from 1691 to 1699, and from 1702 to 1711, excepting the year 1706, was Clerk, and from 1712 to 1720 was the Speaker of the House.

I haven't sorted out the LEFFINGWELL family yet, but it seems they have intermarried with the BUSHNELLs several times.

10. Sarah BUSHNELL was baptized 26 Nov 1625 in Horsham, and died 1 Nov 1693 in Halstead, Seven Oaks, Kent, England. She married on 14 Jul 1642 in Guilford, CT to Rev. John HOADLEY/HOADLY, who was born in Jan 1616 in England, and died 28 Jun 1668 in Rolvenden, Kent, England.

John HOADLEY was one of the original settlers of Guilford, who traveled on the St. John, in the company of Rev. Henry WHITFIELD. He was one of the signers of the Covenant of Guilford. This was the same voyage that carried Francis BUSHNELL and his daughters, Rebecca and Sarah, arriving in Fair Haven, CT between 10 and 15 Jul 1639. Rebecca was 18 or older, and Sarah was 13 or older. John, age 23 on the voyage, would marry Sarah on 14 Jul 1642, when he was 25 and she was 16 or older.

John HOADLEY was named one of the "Seven Pillars" of the church in Guilford, 1643, when he was 27. Perhaps that is when he was styled Reverend.

William HOADLEY, an early settler in Branford, CT may have been a brother of John. His family and descendants are the subject of [HG]. The famous architect David HOADLEY (1774 - 1839) and George HOADLY (1826 - 1902) the Governor of Ohio, were descendants of William.

John and Sarah had 12 children, the first 7 born in Guilford. Most of these 7 died in infancy or childhood. The first child, Samuel, was born in 1643, and lived to age 61. The next child was John Jr, who died at age 2 months. The third child was also named John, and he died in infancy. Next was Alicia, who lived to age 15. Then with another son, they tried the name John again, and this John HOADLY must have lived to adulthood, because he became Rector of Halstead and Vicar of Noocholt. [GEB, p. 26] Then Nathaniel, who died at age 4, and Stephen, 3 weeks.

Perhaps discouraged by the deaths in his family, Rev. John decided to return to England, departing alone on 20 Oct 1653, his wife and remaining children following after a short time. His son Stephen, who lived only 3 weeks, was born in Guilford, May 1654, 7 or 8 months after John left. Soon after John returned to England, he was chosen chaplain to the garrison of Edinburgh, Scotland, which he began at the end of June, 1654, and remained until 1662. There 3 more children were born to John and Sarah, in Edinburgh Castle.

It seems that the name was usually spelled HOADLEY or HODLEY in America, but became HOADLY when John returned to England, and his sons and grandsons used the spelling HOADLY. John and Sarah had no male descendants beyond their grandsons, mentioned below, so they are not ancestors of anyone named HOADLY. The HOADLEYs in America today are probably all descendants of William (above).

Politics

[John HOADLY] was during all this period [1654-62] a firm supporter of the Lord Protector Cromwell. Involuntarily, however, he became a considerable subscriber to the restoration of Charles II, for General Monk, having in his last journey to Scotland borrowed of him £300 (nearly his whole fortune), used the money to advance the interests of the king. This money General Monk never thought proper to restore. [BCS, p. 70]

The family left Scotland on 26 June 1662, and settled at Rolvenden in Kent, 15 August 1662, where he died on 28 Jun 1668, at age 51. His widow died 1 July 1693 (or 1 Nov 1693), aged 76 years. There were 2 more children born in Rolvenden, making a total of 12. I don't have any information on the 3 born in Scotland or the 2 in England.

Samuel HOADLY, the eldest son of John and Sarah, was born in Guilford, New Haven Colony, on 30 Sep 1643. After removing to Scotland with his parents, he enrolled at the University of Edinburgh in 1659. Samuel became interested in education, and became a well-known schoolmaster and author of educational books. His "Natural Method of Teaching, being the Accidence in Questions and Answers &c" was the most popular school manual of the age. Mainly concerned with English and Latin grammar, it was first published in 1683, and went through many editions. He was master or headmaster of several schools in Britain.

Samuel HOADLY married twice. In 1666 he married Mary WOOD. She died in childbirth in 1668; I don't know if the child, or any children from this union, survived. Samuel married in 1669, to Martha PICKERING, daughter of a priest. Samuel and Martha had 9 children, of whom 2 became influential leaders in the Church of England. Benjamin HOADLY was Bishop of Winchester, and John HOADLY was Archbishop of Armagh.

Archbishop John HOADLY (1678 - 1746) [source]

Benjamin HOADLY was a prolific and controversial figure in 18th Century England, favoring the Whig party, and King George I. He wrote numerous books and pamphlets on political and religious topics, many of which can be found on archive.org. As Bishop of Bangor in 1717, he delivered a sermon entitled "The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ," that ignited the Bangorian Controversy. He argued that church leaders should be concerned with the Kingdom of Heaven, and should stay out of government. This suited George I, who sought to reduce the power of the bishops in the House of Lords. The Tory party supported the divine right of kings, and ironically opposed the King.

Benjamin HOADLY married twice. In 1701 he married Sarah CURTIS, when they were both about 25. Sarah was already established as a talented painter, and she made the portrait of her husband that appears above. They had at least 3 sons, and Sarah died in 1743, age about 67. Benjamin remarried, very late in life, to Mary NEWEY in 1745. They had no children together.

Benjamin HOADLY Jr was born in 1706, son of Benjamin and Sarah. He was a physician, and also author of several popular comedic plays. He lived in London.

John HOADLY, the brother of Benjamin Jr, was born in 1711, and became a noted cleric, poet and playwright. He held positions in several churches in England.
