Richard SCOTT was born on 22 Feb 1673 in Hatfield, Hampshire, MA, the son of William SCOTT and Hannah ALLIS. He died on 31 Mar 1750 in Sunderland, Franklin, MA.

Elizabeth BELDING was born on 02 Feb 1683 in Hatfield, Hampshire, MA, the daughter of Stephen BELDING and Mary WELLS. She died on 22 Jan 1769.

Richard SCOTT and Elizabeth BELDING were married on 15 Jan 1702, probably in Hatfield. They had 5 children in Hatfield, and removed to Sunderland about 1715, where they had 3 more children.

There are a few discrepancies in the records. Elisha ROOT died 4 Feb 1775 and Mary SCOTT died 15 Sep 1784 [JPR, p. 332] or else it was Elisha ROOT who died 15 Sep 1784 [OPA, p. 20].

Hatfield was founded in 1660, and formally incorporated as a town in 1670, in Hampshire County, which was constituted in 1662. Sunderland was first settled in 1713, and incorporated in 1718. It was first known as Swampfield. Sunderland was included in the northern part of Hampshire County, which became Franklin County in 1811. Hatfield is on the west bank of the Connecticut River, and Sunderland is on the east bank, a few miles upstream.
