Hubbell, Jonathan

Jonathan HUBBELL (1692 - 1766) and Peaceable SILLIMAN (1695 - bef. 1766)

my 7g-grandparents

Jonathan HUBBELL was born on 25 Mar 1692 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT, son of Lieut. Richard HUBBELL (1654 - 1738) and his 1st wife, Rebecca MOREHOUSE (? - 1692). Jonathan's mother died 8 days after he was born.

Jonathan married Peaceable SILLIMAN on 18 Nov 1713 in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, CT.

Peaceable SILLIMAN was baptized on 12 May 1695 in Fairfield, and she was not mentioned in Jonathan's probate, dated 1766. Her youngest child was born about 1741, when she was about 46. So it appears that she died between 1741 and 1766, Her parents were Daniel and Abigail SILLIMAN.

Jonathan and Peaceable lived in Newtown, Fairfield, CT, and had 11 children. The name Silliman was given to several of their male descendants.

Jonathan left no will, but his estate was probated on 13 Oct 1766. [HH2, pp. 41-2] The probate document names his children: Daniel (the eldest son), Ichabod, Richard, Hannah (wife of Saml. WEED), Elizabeth (wife of Benj. WEED), Jemimah (wife of Joseph SMITH), Hepsabah (wife of David WELLS), Beulah (wife of John GRIFFIN), Jeptha, Ithamar (deceased), Silliman (deceased).

Fairfield and Newtown, in Fairfield County, CT

The English settlements began in 1633, and with a large influx of Puritan immigrants arriving in 1636, many settlements were established, on the major rivers, and the Long Island Sound coast. Two such villages on the coast were Fairfield, and Stratford, both formed in 1639. Fairfield County was formed in 1666.

Richard HUBBELL (1626 - 1699), grandfather of Jonathan, arrived at Fairfield in 1664 with his family. His descendants were leading citizens of Fairfield.

Fairfield was burned by the British during the American Revolution. On 7 Jul 1779, an army of 2,600 British troops embarked from Long Island, which was held by the British, and invaded Fairfield and New Haven colonies. Fairfield, known for its support for the Revolution, was mostly destroyed.

The coastal region of Fairfield County has become known as the Gold Coast, because of the many valuable properties owned by Manhattan businessmen.

Newtown was purchased from the Pohtatuck Indians in 1705. It was known as Quanneapague until 1711. Land was apportioned by lottery, starting in 1710.

Lieut. Richard HUBBELL Jr (1654 - 1738), father of Jonathan, was among the first settlers of Newtown, along with several of his grown sons.

Sandy Hook Elementary School. in Newtown, was the scene of a horrific mass shooting on 14 Dec 2012.
