The JUDEVINE, GROUT and BOYNTON ancestries can be traced back several more generations. I have separate pages for the males in this chart. (Sorry about the patriarchal organization.)

Horace BARTLETT was born on 25 Jul 1795 in Charlestown, Cheshire (later part of Sullivan) County, NH. His parents were Jacob BARTLETT and Patience JUDEVINE. He died on 23 Dec 1888 in Riceville, Crawford County, PA, at age 93.

See the Jacob BARTLETT page.

The birth record matches the birth date on the gravestone. Horace BARTLETT was born 25 Jun 1795 in Charlestown, Cheshire (later part of Sullivan), NH. His parents were Jacob BARTLETT and Patiance JEUDIVINE Jr.

(This name has sometimes been transcribed as JENDIVINE. However, there was a large extended family of JUDEVINE/JEUDEVINE in the area, and no JENDIVINE.)

Veterans Burial Card for Horace BARTLETT

Horace BARTLETT served 3 months in the War of 1812, from 14 Sep 1814 to 13 Dec 1814. He served as a Private, in Captain Nathan Gliddens' company, belonging to Charlestown, in the 1st Regiment, New Hampshire Detachment Militia.

Horace and Sally in Whitby

Between 1815 and 1820, Horace BARTLETT moved from Charlestown, NH to Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

Horace married Sally WOODWORTH, who was born 28 Apr 1801 in VT or NH or LC (Lower Canada), the daughter of Elijah and Betsey WOODWORTH. They had several children in Canada, from 1820 to 1839, and moved to Dryden, Lapeer, MI in 1840.

From the biographies below, we know that the family was in Canada at least as early as 1825, and stayed until 1839. Specifically, they were in Whitby, Ontario when Horace Jr was born, in 1827. Furthermore, the Dryden Bicentennial Book tells us that they were in Canada in 1820, when Albert, the eldest, was born.

Whitby Township is on the north shore of Lake Ontario, today less than 10 miles east of the eastern outskirts of Toronto. Whitby was established in 1792, but very sparsely settled until the 1830s. It contained the villages of Whitby and Oshawa. In 1855 the village of Whitby was incorporated as a separate municipality, and in 1858 East Whitby was formed from the eastern half, containing the village of Oshawa.

Land ownership map shows a 100-acre farm belonging to J. BARTLETT, less than a mile west of Oshawa, Whitby (now East Whitby), Ontario.

The 1836 list of landowners in Whitby had Jonathan BARTLETT with concession 1, lot 15 and Horace BARTLETT with concession 2, lot 3. See [TEK, p. 206]. (I don't have a map of the concessions.) It seems like a good bet that Horace and Jonathan were related!

Jonathan BARTLETT was probably related to Horace. More discussion of this is on the Jacob BARTLETT page.

Brief Stay in NY, 1839

The biographies of Henry and Elijah BARTLETT (below) tell us that the family left Whitby and removed to Genesee County, NY in 1839, and moved on to MI in 1840. They probably stayed with Sally (WOODWORTH) BARTLETT's sister, Cynthia (WOODWORTH) PERKINS, in Middlebury, Genesee (became Wyoming in 1841) County, NY. Cynthia had married and moved to Middlebury in 1820. See the Elijah WOODWORTH page.

There was also a large extended family of BARTLETTs in Genesee County. The 1840 US Census records 9 BARTLETT households. It is tempting to think that Horace might be connected to these BARTLETTs.

BARTLETTs in MI, 1840

The biographies of Horace Jr and Elijah (below) say that the family moved to Lapeer County, MI in 1840, and then to Oakland County, MI in 1845. However, the 1840 US Census has them in Oakland County. The will of Sally's father, Elijah WOODWORTH, dated 1848, calls her "Sally wife of Horace Bartlett of Lenawe County Michigan". So they may have moved a few times when they first came to MI, but they eventually settled in Dryden, Lapeer, MI.

[Comments in square brackets are my guesses, not part of the census.]

The 1850 US Census shows two adjacent BARTLETT families. Albert is the son of Horace. (See the section on Albert, below.)

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/bartlett-horace/1850%20Dryden%20Lapeer%20MI%20p8%20Horace%20Bartlet%20clip.jpg

Detail from the 1850 US Census

In 1850, Horace was a farmer, and Albert's occupation is hard to read, but looks like Carpenter and something that starts with J. Horace has real estate valued at $1000, and Albert has $100. A mark in the last column indicates that the person attended school in the past year. Albert was born in NH, Philena in (possibly) NY, and the last 2 in Mich. The birthplace of Sally, Elizah, Sarah and Albert, which some have transcribed as SC, looks more like LC to me. That could mean Lower Canada. So the family was in Lower Canada in 1838, lived in New York around 1840, and was in Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan by 1849. This has to be the right family.

The writing is more clear in the 1860 Census. The birthplace of Sarah and Philena is clearly written Canada. Truman HOWLAND is a farmhand, possibly unrelated. The discrepancies between the 1850 and 1860 censuses are that Sally was born in LC or NH, and Sarah was born in NY or Canada. But I think this is the same family. The word fragment after Horace seems to be an abbreviation of "senior", indicating that there was a Horace BARTLETT Jr.

Horace appears to have "eloped" with a Mrs. BEARDSLEY in Spring 1868. I don't know if he had a divorce from Sally, who lived until 1873, and remained in Dryden. Sally's gravestone, below, refers to her as the "Wife of Horace Bartlett". The article below also refers to Horace as a Reverend.

Horace BARTLETT and Mrs BEARDSLEY

The Romeo Observer has the following items in its Dryden correspondence: There is considerable excitement prevailing here just now over the sudden disappearance of the Rev. Horace Bartlett, Sr. His conduct of the past few weeks has given rise to suspicions that he intended self-destruction, and it is yet conjectured by some that he has carried into execution his often repeated threat to hang himself. But we are inclined to agree with his son’s opinion, i. e., that he has gone in search of a Mrs. Beardsley, with whom he eloped a year ago this spring. It is nothing strange, as he is a youth of only seventy-five, and was a great-grandfather three years since.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, MI) 27 May 1869, p. 4

Horace BARTLETT in PA

So it looks like Horace BARTLETT married Mrs. Susan (MERCHANT) BEARDSLEY, widow of A. BEARDSLEY, in Spring 1868, when he was 72, and she was about 43. They lived in Crawford County, PA, with her daughter Viola BEARDSLEY, who Horace adopted and raised from age 5.

In 1870 Horace reappeared in Crawford County, northwestern PA with his wife, Susanna, and her daughter Viola.

This Horace BARTLETT was born in New Hampshire, but he should be almost 75, not 70. Horace is a farmer, with real estate valued at $250, and personal estate $200. The reason I think this is the right Horace BARTLETT is that in the 1880 US Census, below, Viola has the surname BEARDSLEY, in agreement with the newspaper article.

In 1880, Horace and Susan are sharing a home with another older couple, Loren and Julia Ann MARSH. I don't know if they are related. Both Loren and Horace are listed as Farmers, and both Julia Ann and Susan are listed as Wife. That usually refers to the relation to the head-of-household, but in this case I think it clearly means that Julia Ann is the wife of Loren and Susan is the wife of Horace. Viola is then the step-daughter of Horace, so she is the daughter of Susan, who must have been married to a BEARDSLEY. The census doesn't list the birthplaces of Horace's parents, but Susan's father was born in Massachusetts. Viola and her father, the unknown previous husband of Susan, were both born in Michigan, and Susan was born in New York, as we knew from the 1860 Census. Julia Ann has Dyspepsia.

His gravestone in Riceville gives us his birth and death dates:

Horace Bartlett
Birth: Jun. 25, 1795
Death: Dec. 23, 1888
War of 1812 Veteran.
Burial: Riceville Cemetery
Riceville, Crawford County, PA

This record has the same birth date as the birth record, above, so it is the same Horace BARTLETT.

Biographies of Sons

Biographies of 3 of the sons of Horace and Sally are found in [HRP]. These are referred to several times on this page.

Gravestone of Sally and Sarah

The gravestone of Sally, wife of Horace BARTLETT, is found in North Dryden Cemetery, Dryden, Lapeer, MI. The inscription reads:

Aged 72 Yrs. 3 Mos. 13 D's

The Logic

There were several Horace BARTLETTs, including at least one of about the same age, probably related, who lived in Cheshire County, NH. (See another section, below.) It has been difficult to be sure whether a given record refers to the right person. My conclusions on this page don't appear on public member trees, so they may be doubted by some. Here I will try to explain my reasoning.

The Horace BARTLETT of interest, father of Cynthia (BARTLETT) HUNTLEY, was surely the Rev. Horace BARTLETT, Sr, age 75, of Dryden, MI, referred to in the newspaper article above, which says he "eloped" with the widow of A. BEARDSLEY, about 1869.

We have many records of Horace BARTLETT Sr, of Dryden, Lapeer, MI, described above. He married Sally WOODWORTH before 1820, and they had 8 children in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, before coming to MI around 1839. Where was he before 1820? From later census records, he was born about 1795 in NH. Where was he after 1869?

The 1880 US Census, also shown above, has one Horace BARTLETT in Riceville, Crawford, PA. Horace (85) has a wife Susan (54) and a stepdaughter, Viola BEARDSLEY (16). The appearance of the name BEARDSLEY shows that this is the same Horace BARTLETT who was mentioned in the newspaper article. Thus Viola is the daughter of Susan and A. BEARDSLEY.

The death record of Viola WADE, born 14 Aug 1865 in MI, died 14 Apr 1915 in Titusville, Crawford, PA, says her father's name was BEARDSLEY and her mother's maiden name was Susan MERCHANT.

The gravestone of Horace BARTLETT, shown above, in Riceville Cemetery, says he was born 25 Jun 1795 and died 23 Dec 1888. The birth date agrees with Horace's age in most of the census records, and since it is in Riceville, I believe it must be the right Horace. So now we have his birth and death dates.

Bartlett Land in Dryden, Lapeer, MI

Horace BARTLETT and his family came to Dryden Township in 1840. The family consisted of Horace Sr (45), Sally (39), Albert (20), Cynthia (16), Henry (15), Horace Jr (13), Patience (7), Elijah (4), Sarah (3), and Philena (1). They went to Oxford, in neighboring Oakland County, in the 1840s, but they were back in Dryden for the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses.

In 1860, Horace Jr and Henry had their own farms, in Dryden. Horace Sr, Horace Jr and Henry appeared in the 1860 Ag Schedule, almost consecutively. (I'm not sure which is Sr and which is Jr.)

The biographies above tell us that Henry had 198 acres in Section 15, and Horace Jr had 180 acres in Sections 14 and 15. Elijah had land in Sections 9 and 16, after 1864. Albert lived in Dryden village (see below).

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/bartlett-horace/1863-Dryden%20crop.jpg

1863 Map showing part of Dryden Township, Lapeer County, MI

The 1863 plat map shows properties under the name H. BARTLETT in sections 9, 14 and 15. We can't say for sure whether these are for Horace Sr, Horace Jr, or Henry. The 60 acres in Section 9 was probably that which eventually belonged to Elijah, who was about 26 in 1863. The 200 acres in Section 14 and 80 acres in Section 15 are undoubtedly part of the land eventually owned by Henry and Horace Jr. It is interesting that a 40-acre property under the name W. WOODARD is adjoining the H. BARTLETT property in Section 15. Also the SQUIER, LAMB and BACON properties are nearby.

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/bartlett-horace/Dryden%20Lapeer%20MI%201874%20Bartlett%209,14,15,16%20crop.jpg

Part of Dryden Township, Lapeer County, MI, from the 1874 Lapeer County Atlas.

The 1874 Atlas of Lapeer County shows several farms belonging to the BARTLETTS and related families. E. BARTLETT (probably Elijah) had 60 acres in Section 9, and 80 adjoining acres in Section 16, making a good-sized farm of 140 acres. Several plots appear under the name of H. BARTLETT in Section 15, consisting of 196 acres in all, and an additional 80 acres in Section 14. Some of these 276 acres probably belonged to Henry, and some to Horace Jr. If they were evenly divided, they each had 138 acres, almost even with their brother, Elijah. So it would seem that Horace Sr had divided up his property among his 3 sons, not including Albert, who lived in town. Also note the properties of the SQUIER/SQUIRE family in Sections 11 and 20, and the LAMB family, in Sections 13 and 14.

The 1874 Atlas also has a business directory that lists Henry BARTLETT as a Farmer in District No. 1, and Elijah BARTLETT as a Farmer, Stock and Wool Grower, in District No. 3. The districts were distinct from the townships.

The 1921 Plat Map of Dryden Township shows Bartlett properties in sections 9, 14, 15 and 16, west of the town of Dryden.

Many Surnames of Sally

Sally, wife of Horace BARTLETT, has appeared with several similar maiden names. She was Sally WOODWORTH in her daughter Cynthia's death certificate, and Sally WOODARD in her son Henry's death certificate. The Dryden Bicentennial Book [DBB, p. 83] has her as Sally WOODRUFF.

Sally died on 11 Aug 1873, and was buried in Dryden, MI as described above. However, I have not found her in the 1870 US Census. I have no idea who Sally's parents or siblings were.

Another Horace and Sally BARTLETT?

Another Horace BARTLETT, about the same age, lived in Sullivan (formerly part of Cheshire) County, NH. I don't think this is the right Horace BARTLETT because he was still in Sullivan County in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses.

1. Albert BARTLETT was born about 1820-2 in Lower Canada. He was the oldest child of Horace BARTLETT and Sally WOODRUFF, as listed in [DBB, p. 83]. Also, the Albert BARTLETT and Horace BARTLETT families appeared consecutively in the 1850 US Census (near the top of this page). Albert married Henrietta/Harriet SQUIER. Harriet was the niece of Ethan SQUIER, who married Lovina HUNTLEY, sister of Erwin HUNTLEY.

Albert and Harriet had their 1st child about 1849, when Harriet was about 18, so they were probably married around 1848.

The death certificate for Harriet BARTLETT says she was born 16 Apr 1831 in Michigan, and died 6 Feb 1904 in Petoskey, Emmet County, MI. Her parents were Luman SQUIER, born in Vermont, and Rebecca ARNOLD, born in New York.

In the 1850 Census they had a son, Henry, born about 1849. By 1860 Albert and Harriet had 4 children.

In 1860 Albert was a carpenter, with real estate valued at $200, and personal estate $50. Albert was the Town Clerk for Dryden in 1863-4 and 1871-4 and 1876, 1878. [HRP, p. 94]

The only mistake here is that Clara E is 26, when she should be 20. (The writing is unclear - it could be 20.)

The death certificate of Henry A. BARTLETT, son of Albert BARTLETT and Harriet SQUIER, says that he was born on 3 Feb 1849 in Michigan, and died 27 Feb 1910, at age 61, in Petoskey. It says that Albert and Harriet were both born in Michigan, but other records show that Albert was born in Canada. Henry was a traveling salesman, and died of apoplexy.

This must have been one of Henry's relatives, since he would have been 48, hardly a "young man" in 1897.

2. Cynthia "Sinthie" BARTLETT was born 27 Jan 1822 in Lower Canada, and died 4 Jan 1909, in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI, almost 87 years of age. I don't know if she and Albert were twins. Sinthie married Erwin HUNTLEY on 14 Oct 1843 in Lapeer County, MI. They were my gg-grandparents. See the Erwin HUNTLEY page.

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/bartlett-horace/Cynthia%20(Bartlett)%20Huntley%20death%20cert%20-%20smallest.jpg

3. Henry BARTLETT was born in 1825, Canada. His biography appears above. He went to California in 1852, but returned to Dryden, Lapeer, MI in 1856. He married (1) 15 Mar 1849 in Lapeer, Lapeer, MI, to Laura A. WOORD or HOARD, and (2) 1858 to Miss Eliza Ann LAMB, of Dryden, and (3) about 1870, unknown. By 1884 he was the owner of 198 acres.

The gravestone of Ann Eliza (LAMB) BARTLETT in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dryden, Lapeer, MI says she was born in 1833 and died in 1902.

Henry's death certificate says that he was born 11 Feb 1825 in Canada, and died 4 Jan 1903 in Dryden, at age 77. His parents were Horace BARTLETT and Sally WOODARD. He had been married 33 years, and had 3 children, all still living. So his last marriage was about 1870.

In 1850, Henry BARTLETT is found in Oxford Township. He appears to have a wife, Laura (not Eliza), and a farmhand. The biography says Henry married Eliza in 1858, so Laura must have died or divorced between 1850 and 1858.

The 1860 US Census shows Henry BARTLETT in Dryden, apparently with a wife and young son. His wife now is Ann E, who could be Eliza LAMB, mentioned in Henry's biography. Henry has a much larger farm than he had in 1850.

Andrew and Irini STEARNS were newlyweds in 1870, married in Jan or Jun. No doubt related to Mary J. STEARNS, who married Henry A. BARTLETT, son of Albert (above).

4. Horace BARTLETT Jr was born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada on 12 Apr 1827, and died in Michigan on 8 Jan 1888. His biography appeared near the top of this page, and the dates come from his gravestone in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dryden, Lapeer, MI. He was 13 when his family moved to Dryden, Lapeer, MI, and 21 when they moved to Oakland County, MI. However, most of the family was back in Dryden for the 1850 US Census, above. Horace Jr moved back to Dryden in 1853, at age 26, and purchased a farm. Also on 10 Mar 1852, he married Adelaide WHITAKER, of Oakland County, and they raised 6 children. The marriage record says that he was 25 and she was 21. Adelaide's gravestone says she was born in 1831 and died in 1910.

From the biography, the BARTLETT family moved to Oxford, Oakland County in 1848, and then to Avon, Oakland County. The 1850 US Census find Horace BARTLETT Jr in Avon. He lives in a household of 5 people, between the ages of 5 and 29, all with different surnames. His future wife, Adeline (Adelaide?) WHITAKER is one of his housemates. Horace is a Farmer, with real estate valued at $6,000, which is a large property, especially for a 23-year-old. Charles DERBESHE must be a farmhand.

In 1860 Horace BARTLETT Jr is a Farmer, with real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate $500. The next family listed is the family of Aaron MOE, who appears on the Enoch HUNTLEY page.

Horace BARTLETT Jr was drafted toward the end of the Civil War, but paid someone to serve for him. That was legal, and not uncommon in those days.

Horace BARTLETT in the 16th Michigan Infantry

16th Infantry: Murray, John. Enlisted in company I, Sixteenth Infantry, March 18, 1865, at Dryden, for 3 years, age 39. Mustered March 18, 1865. Substitute for Horace Bartlett, drafted from Dryden, Lapeer County. Mustered out at Jeffersonville, Ind., July 8, 1865. [16, p. 199]

There was a Horace W. BARTLETT, a Private in Company D, 9th Michigan Infantry. He enlisted 2 Mar 1865, and died at Chattanooga, TN on 2 May 1865. His widow, Caroline E. BARTLETT, applied for his pension on 29 Aug 1865. However, our Horace's biography (above) says that he was still living in 1884, and his gravestone says 1888.

From the death certificate of Adelaide, she was born 18 Mar 1831 in England, and died 23 Apr 1910, in Dryden. Her parents were William WHITAKER and Ann E??TWOOD, both born in England. Adelaide was the mother of 4 children, with 3 still living. This conflicts with Horace's biography (above), which lists 6 children.

5. Patience BARTLETT was born in 1833, and died in 1846, at the age of 12 or 13.

6. Elijah Edward BARTLETT was born in Canada, 1837. His biography appears near the top of this page. Elijah was a child of 3 when the family moved to Dryden, Michigan. In about 1858 he moved to Pontiac, MI and in 1860, to California. By 1864 he was back in Dryden, where he purchased some land. He married Miss Ellen/Ella DUTTON in 1857 (the biography says 1859). Ellen was born about 1835, in NY (biography says she was from Oakland County, MI). They had 2 sons and 2 daughters (biography says 1 son, 3 daughters), in Michigan.

Elijah, age 14, appeared with his parents in the 1850 US Census, above. He married Ellen L. DUTTON on 9 Oct 1857 in Clarkston, MI.

Oakland County, Michigan Vital Records, 1800-1917
Name Dutton, Ellen L.
Birth Date 1834
Spouse Elijah Bartlett
Marriage Place Clarkston, MI
Marriage Date Oct 9, 1857
Residence Independence, MI

In 1860, Elijah BARTLETT and his wife and daughter are found in Oakland Township. Elijah is a Farmer, but he owns no land. Mary E. DUTTON is probably a younger sister of Ellen.

In 1880 the family was in Dryden. The son John who was 2 in 1870 had become daughter Jennie, who was 12 in 1880. Eva was still single, and still in school, at age 21.

Elijah BARTLETT divorce

Ida Staley, of Bancroft, sixteen years old is under arrest charged with running away with Jonas Bartlett, a married man aged fifty five of Dryden. Bartlett was arrested by capias issued in behalf of the girl’s parents who want $10,000 damages. They are both completely infatuated with one another.
The Times Herald (Port Huron, MI) Monday, 25 Jul 1892, page 8

Mrs. Elijah Bartlett, of Dryden, secured a divorce from her husband last week and he has married Bell Staley, the young woman who sued him for seduction.
The Times Herald (Port Huron, Michigan) · 21 Feb 1893, Tue · Page 2

In 1892, Elijah ran off with young girl named Ida L. "Bell" STALEY. There are discrepancies among the records and newspaper articles. The article above says that he was 55 and she 16. He would have been about 55, and she must have been a minor, since her parents filed charges, so these facts make sense. The article calls him Jonas, but I think that is a mistake. Ida's father's name was Jonas STALEY.

Elijah and Ida went to Ontario and got married on 27 Jan 1893 or 17 Jan 1892. They stated their ages as 43 and 23. The newspaper article above says on 21 Feb 1893 that Elijah and Ellen were divorced "last week," so Elijah a bigamist for 2 or 3 weeks. Elijah and Ida were divorced on 28 Nov 1899, in Lapeer. They had 2 children.

Ida (STALEY) BARTLETT married Harry SMITH on 20 Nov 1899 in Goodland, Lapeer, MI, apparently 8 days before her divorce from Elijah was final. They are found in Goodland in the 1900 US Census, with Gladys and Maude, daughters of Ida and Elijah.

Elijah's widow, Ellen, remained in Lapeer County.

The 1900 US Census has Ellen (DUTTON) BARTLETT, age 62, living with her daughter Mattie, and family, in a rented home on Main Street in Imlay City, Lapeer County, MI. Mattie has been married to Walter ABBS for 8 years, and she has had one child. Ellen had 5 children, with 4 still living. (I don't know the name of the one deceased.) Walter immigrated in 1884 from (English) Canada, and is naturalized. He is employed as an assistant cashier at a bank.

Ellen (DUTTON) BARTLETT and her daughter Eva M. BARTLETT moved to Spokane, WA. Jennie and Mattie moved to Boise, ID with their families. Elmer stayed in Michigan.

Ellen BARTLETT obituary

AGED WOMAN DIES AT HER HOME HERE

Mrs. Ellen Bartlett, aged 78 years, dropped dead of heart failure in the kitchen of her home, 1009 Maxwell avenue, Sunday morning. Her daughter, Miss Eva Bartlett, found her mother, where she had fallen against the gas stove.

Mrs. Bartlett came to Spokane five years ago from Michigan. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. O. J. Hage and Mrs. W. J. Abbs, both of Boise, Idaho; Miss Bartlett of Spokane, and a son, Elmer Bartlett, of Dryden, Mich.

The remains were sent to Boise Sunday night by the Hazen-Jaeger Undertaking company.

Spokane Chronicle (Spokane, WA) Monday, 31 Mar 1913, page 14

I don't have a death date for Elijah BARTLETT. He was still living on 28 Nov 1899.

In 1910 Ellen/Ellin was living with Eva, at 1013 Maxwell Avenue, Spokane, WA. (I think Ellen was Eva's mother, not the other way around!) The census tells us that Ellin was widowed, and had 5 children, with 4 still living. Eva was single, with no children. Ellin owned the home, free of mortgage. Eva was a public school teacher.

7. Sarah BARTLETT was born 21 Sep 1837 and died 15 Dec 1866. She married George HODGES. We know this from the gravestone she shared with her mother, above, and from [DBB, p. 83]. From the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, above, she was born in Lower Canada.

In Jul 1860, Sarah was 22, and living with her parents in Dryden Township. George HODGES was 25, living with his mother and siblings, also in Dryden. So they were probably married after Jul 1860.

The 1860 US Census doesn't usually give us the marital status. However, in this case Martha's occupation is "Widow"! The next family listed, #1147, is the family of James HODGES, brother of George. This biography has more information about the HODGES family. James was probably the eldest son, as he seems to have inherited his father's property.

1863 map of the HODGES properties in Section 5, Dryden Township, Lapeer County, MI. Note one of the BARTLETT properties in Section 9.

When George HODGES registered for the draft in Dryden, Jul 1863, he was unmarried. He moved to Gardner, KS in 1864, and married Angeline WILLIAMS in 1865, according to the obituary (below), but records indicate it was 31 Dec 1868.

George HODGES obituary

Death of a Gardner Pioneer.

Mr. George Hodges was born in New York, July 4, 1833 and died at his home in Gardner, Saturday, January 29, 1921. At the age of eight he moved, with his parents, to Michigan, where they lived until 1864, when they came to Kansas, settling near Gardner, where he has since resided.

He was married to Miss Angeline Williams at Gardner, Kans., in 1865, and to this union six children were born, the oldest, Mary, dying in infancy, the other five of whom survive. His wife died about sixteen years ago and he made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Emma Clark, since that time.

The surviving children are Mrs. J. O. Hadrick, Mrs. Emma Clark, Borden S. Hodges, Gardner; Mrs. Homer Limbird, Olathe; and Mrs. G. A. Arneal, Cheyenne, Wyo. He is survived by sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Hodges was one of the most highly respected citizens of Johnson county, was a successful farmer of many years’ experience, and his death will be felt very keenly.

The Olathe Mirror (Olathe, KS) Thursday, 3 Feb 1921, page 1

It is strange that George's obituary doesn't mention his first wife. They must have been married a very short time. Also, one Sarah BARTLETT was married in 1866.

Michigan, County Marriages, 1822-1940

It is possible that this is our Sarah BARTLETT, since she died 15 Dec 1866. If so, she had two very brief marriages, and died at age 29, apparently with no offspring.

8. Philena BARTLETT was born 1839-40, in NY or Canada, based on the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, above. Philena married William H. ALCOTT, 29 Sep 1865 in Macomb County, MI.

Philena died 5 Jun 1875. Her gravestone in North Dryden Cemetery is inscribed:

PHILENA

W. H. ALCOTT
Died June 5 1875
Aged
35 Yrs 7 mos 17 Dys

Philena also has a shared gravestone with William, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dryden, that she was born 18 Oct 1839 and died 5 Jun 1875, and William was born 20 Aug 1840 and died 6 Aug 1891. So she was only 25 when she died, and he lived to almost 51.

After Philena died, William married a woman named Alice, who also shares his stone in Mount Pleasant. William was a blacksmith in the Civil War, a store clerk in the 1870 Census, and a postmaster according to his death record.
