Sass, Sophie

Sophie M. F. SASS (1825 - 1893)

My 3g-grandmother, Sophie M. F. SASS was born about 1825-8 in Mecklenburg, Germany, and died 23 Mar 1893 in Hampshire, Kane, IL. Her son Frederic, my 2g-grandfather, was born about 1857, in IL. She married Philip "Edidus" HAUSLEIN on 8 May 1866, in Kane County, IL.

The birth and death dates for Sophie come from her gravestone in Hampshire Center Cemetery, in Hampshire, Kane, IL, which she shared with her husband, Philip HAUSLEIN (below). Specifically, the stone reads:

SOPHIE M. F.
HIS WIFE
DIED
MCH. 23, 1893
AGED
67 Y. 4 M. 25 D.

The 3 in 1893 could be an 8, and the 7 in 67 could be a 4, so I'm not sure about the birth year. If the 1870 and 1880 census records (below) are reliable, she was born about 1827-8. However, the initials M. F. and the 4 M. 25 D. are clear on the stone. This implies a birthday of 30 Oct. In [AL, p. 15] Sophie's birthdate is given as 26 Oct 1825.

There was a Sophia Maria Friederica SASS, born 23 Sep 1828 in Boddin u Gnoien, Mecklenburg, to parents Friedrich and Maria SASS. I think she is the right one, although the birthdate doesn't match the date derived from the stone. See the section on the SASS Family of Boddin, below.

ZEITNER

One Maria Sophia Friedrike SAẞ married Johann Christopher Ludwig ZEITNER on 17 May 1850 in Groß Lukow, Mecklenburg.

Spouse's Father: Joachim Friedrich Zeitner

This looks promising, even though Sophia's names are in the wrong order, as her father is called Johann Friedrich SAẞ or SASS, which agrees with the name of the father in the SASS family of Boddin, described below. Groß Lukow is about 90 km southeast of Gnoien.

They had children, Johann Karl Friedrich SAẞ born 8 Feb 1846, and Karl Friedrich Heinrich SAẞ born 19 Dec 1848, both in Groß Lukow. Both were born with the name of SAẞ or SASS, and both were later known by the ZEITNER surname. They seemed to have lived long lives in Mecklenburg, so if their mother emigrated in Oct 1864, she left behind two sons of age 18 and 15.

AWE

Illinois records of Sophie and her son, Fred, don't tell us much about their origins. The 1870 US Census says that Sophie was 42, so born about 1828, in Mecklenburg. It says Fred was 13, hence born about 1857, in IL. Fred was later adopted by Philip HAUSLEIN, becoming known as Fred HAUSLEIN.

I am pretty sure that the record above is for our Sophia. It tells us the Fred was born Friedrich Christian Ludwig SASS, on 2 Sep 1856, in Boddin. He was the illegitimate child of Johann AWE, who is, I now believe, my biological 3g-grandfather. But which one?

There was an extended AWE family in Boddin and Gnoien, including several named Johann, born in 1825 and 1829. Carl Johann Friedrich AWE was born 24 Apr 1829 in Boddin, son of August AWE. He married Dorothea Luisa Friedrike HÖTHER on 18 Oct 1861.

The Johann AWE family in Finkenthal, on the southeast side of Gnoien, may have been the Johann and Dorothea above. The census says he was born about 1825, not 1829, but his wife Dorothea was 1 year younger. However, there was a Johann Carl Friedrich AWE, born 21 Sep 1829, who married Sophie Dorothea Christian ENGEL on 18 Sep 1857 in Gnoien.

If Dorothea and Sophia went by their first names, then the following census record may be for the second Johann. It seems that the census has understated birthdates by 4 years, twice.

Mecklenburg

The region known as Mecklenburg lies in what is now northeastern Germany. The political boundaries have shifted many times over the centuries, and Mecklenburg has sometimes been independent, and was once part of Prussia.

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/sass-sophie/1024px-Mecklenburg-Vorpommern_Map_Districts_Border_Mecklenburg_Western_Pomerania_-_Landkreise_Grenzen_Karte_MV_MeckPomm.svg.png

Mecklenburg is a region in northeastern Germany, shown here as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern District. [source]

It seems to have been common in Mecklenburg, for children to inherit the surnames of their mothers. Many children were born out of wedlock, and many marriages were formalized after the couple had several children together. Also, most people seem to have had several middle names. Most men had at least one name Johann or Friedrich, or both! In America, they used American versions of one of their names, like John or Fred.

More about Boddin and Gnoien in Mecklenburg can be found on the Johann HINT page.

Immigration of Sophie M. F. SASS

Sophia "Sophie" M. F. SASS was born on 30 Oct 1825 in Mecklenburg, Germany, and immigrated to America. She was in Illinois by 1857, when her son Fred was born. This is based on one record, so if it's not correct, at least we know that Sophie was in Kane County, IL on 8 May 1866 when she married Philip HAUSLEIN.

Several women named Sophie SASS were born in the 1820s and immigrated from Germany to the US in the 1850s and 1860s. I have considered the most likely candidates.

One Sophie SASS immigrated in 1864, also recorded in the Hamburg Passenger Lists. She was 36, so born about 1828, and traveled with Fritz SASS, age 7, so born about 1857. They departed from Hamburg, Germany on 24 Oct 1864, bound for New York, on the ship Deutschland. Their residence was Kranichshoff, Mecklenburg.

From the Deutschland ship's manifest. Translation: männlich is male, weiblich is female,

Frau is woman or wife, Kind is child, Arbeiter is worker, Knecht is servant.

My guess is that Freidrich SASS Sr and Sophie are brother and sister. Ludwig may be a younger brother or cousin. So Sophie and her son Fritz immigrated with her brother and his family. This Sophie seems most likely to be the right one, but it means that the 1870 US Census was incorrect about Fred/Fritz's birthplace.

The record indicates that the family came from Kranichshoff, Mecklenburg. I think this is Kranichshof, which is a small community near Gnoien, Mecklenburg.

It seems a bit strange, coming to New York, and then travelling to Illinois, during the American Civil War.

The Estate of Louis SASS

A breakthrough on this family comes from the estate papers of Louis SASS, a farmhand from Huntley, McHenry County, which borders Kane County's northern boundary.

Louis SASS died in 1876, leaving no will, and no real estate. However, he did leave a personal estate of $1,528 - a large sum, for a farmhand. The papers involved with settlement of this estate come to 29 pages, including several cover pages and legal documents. Louis left no widow, and no children. The bulk of his estate went to his siblings, who are named several times, and explicitly called brothers and sisters of Louis SASS.

One document says that Louis SASS died on or about 5 Apr 1876. However, there is also a bill for $15, paid by the estate, to Dr. O. K. GRIFFITH, for almost daily treatment, on 11 occasions from 13 Apr to 4 May 1876. The probate date was 19 Dec 1876, in McHenry County, IL.

The siblings named in the settlement are:

John SASS
Frederick SASS, called Fritz in 2 places
Fredericka FURHMANN
Sophia HAUSLEIN, called Sophia FURHMANN once, but that is clearly a mistake
Christian SASS, who could not be located, not seen for 17 years

Frederick and Sophia both signed with a mark, and John was called an attorney for Frederick. The administrator of the estate was Christian FUHRMANN, called a brother-in-law of Louis. He must be the husband of Fredericka. The sureties were Philip HAUSLEIN and Fritz SASS. Of course, the former was the husband of Sophia, and the latter was probably the brother, although Sophia's son Frederick "Fritz" would have been about 19, and although he went by the adopted name HAUSLEIN, it seems he was born SASS, so some of the references to Fritz SASS could be him.

The estate documents don't give us the age or residence of any of the siblings. Since Christian FUHRMANN was chosen as administrator, he maust have lived in McHenry County, and the documents seem to imply that he was located in W0odstock, at least on 19 Dec 1876.

Looking at the immigration record, above, it appears to show siblings Friedrich, Sophie, and Ludwig. Friedrich became Fredrick/Fred/Fritz, Sophie was usually called Sophia, and Ludwig became Louis. Friedrich had a wife and 3 children, and Sophie had a son.

I believe this proves that my gg-grandfather, Fredrick "Fritz" HAUSLEIN, was not born in IL, but in Mecklenburg, about 1857, with the name Friedrich SASS. He immigrated with his mother and uncles, in 1864, and took the name HAUSLEIN after 1866, when his mother married Philip HAUSLEIN.

The SASS Family of Boddin

Searching the records of Mecklenburg, we are looking for a family with these 6 siblings, given what little we know about them. We have the husbands of Sophie and Fredricka, and some estimates of their birthdates. Also, the marriage record for Fredricka (below) says her father was Johann SASS, so he must be the father of the others as well.

A promising SASS family lived in Boddin, a small community near Goien, in Mecklenburg. As mentioned above, the Sophia SASS born there does not match the birthdate on the gravestone in Kane County, but does match the middle initials. In sections below, I will examine the other siblings.

The parents of 6 children who seem to match up with the 6 siblings were Johann Friederich SASS and Maria Christiana Ilsabeth HINT.

Fred may have died in 1881, Chicago. However, there was a Fritz SASS, age 69, in Oshkosh, MN in 1895, living next to Christ and Fredericka FUHRMAN. See below.

John SASS, age 21, married Augusta SLUTMAN, age 20, in 1875, in McHenry County, according to Illinois, County Marriage Records, 1800-1940. The Illinois Wedding Index has the date as 3 Oct 1875. John SASS died on 15 Feb 1889 in Marengo, IL. The date is on his gravestone in the Marengo City Cemetery, Marengo, McHenry, IL.

John SASS killed in accident

Mr. John Sass, engineer at the Marengo steam mills, was instantly killed a few days ago in the machinery. His head was crushed to a jelly. No one saw the accident, but it is believed that while oiling he slipped and fell into the fly-wheel, which threw him over violently against a stone wall, dashing his brains out. He leaves a wife and six children.

Mrs. Henry Borchart of Nunda township gave birth Thursday, Aug. 25, to triplets, one daughter and two sons. One of the boys died the following Friday and was buried, Saturday, but the two remaining children are apparently in good health. Mrs. Borchart was formerly Mrs. John Sass of this city, whose husband was killed at the steam mill.

When his brother Louis died in 1876, Christian had not been heard from in 17 years, and his whereabouts were unknown. He may have stayed in Germany.

The census record above could be for our Christian SASS. The age and birthplace fit. This SASS family was in Will County, about 50 miles southeast of Elgin, on the southwest side of the Chicago area. Christina HOSS could be Christian's mother, Maria Ilisabeth Christina (HINT) SASS,

although she would have been not quite 68, instead of 73. Mary BENTION or BENTIM is unknown.

However, it seems that this Christian SASS was born on 9 Oct 1830, if we can believe the date on his gravestone in Saint Paul Evangelical Reformed Church Cemetery in Monee, Will County, IL. Our Christian SASS was born 2 Dec 1830.

Christian's father was Wilhelm FUHRMANN, and Fredricke's father was Johann SASS.

The family appears in the 1867 German census. The record says it is from a place called Dadow, with District Office: Domanialamt Grabow-Eldena. The cities of Grabow and Eldena are in western Mecklenburg. I have not found any Dadow nearby.

Since she was still in Mecklenburg in 1867, Friedericke immigrated later than her siblings.

Christian and Fredricka appeared in Oshkosh, MN in 1895. I doubted that this was the right couple, as they are 5 and 7 years younger than expected, based on the 1867 German census. However, they are listed next to Fritz SASS. The census is not organized by family units.

He came to America in 1864 with his brother and sister, as described above. He was known as Louis SASS in McHenry County, IL where he worked as a farmhand. I don't believe he ever married or had any children.

In 1870, Louis worked on the farm of John TROST, and lived with the family, who had also come from Mecklenburg.

He died in Apr or May 1876, in McHenry County, as described above. He was about 38, and left behind a substantial amount of money, which was distributed among his siblings.

The HAUSLEINs

The HAUSLEIN family owned and operated a restaurant in Oberaltertheim, a village in south central Germany, from 1730 until 1817, when they sold to Heinrich FLOHR. It was partly destroyed in 1825, when a fire consumed most of the village, but it was rebuilt, and still standing in 1968.

Several of the HAUSLEINs emigrated in 1845, and settled in northeastern Illinois. The immigrants were Johann Michael and family, his sister Dorothea (HAUSLEIN) HEMRICK and family, and brother Edidius, who changed his name to Philip in the US. Also, George F. HAUSLEIN, nephew of the 3 siblings.

The HAUSLEINS were not poor immigrants, as they purchased farmland in 1845.

The Hauslein Family of Illinois (1993) by Adele Loudermilk, Abstract

The Hauslein family originally of Oberaltertheim, Bavaria, Germany. George Hauslein (1827-1909) was born in Oberaltertheim, Bavaria, and came to America in 1845 with his uncle Johann Michael or J. Mickle Hauslein (1803-1884) and his wife, Maria Dorothea (Mary) Thoma and their four children, Martin, Melchior "Malachi", Maria Dorothea, Caroline and Michael's brother Edidius "Philip". George was the only one to settle in Chicago, Ill., all the others were farmers and settled in Hampshire, Kane Co., Illinois. George married 1848 Augusta Bischoff (1831-1906). The Bischoffs were 1846 emigrants from Prussia. [AL]

Note: Philip's older brother, Michael HAUSLEIN, had a grandson named Fred. This Fred HAUSLEIN was born about 1866, studied at Yale, and became a professor at North Texas State. This has been a source of confusion.

Eva Maria HAUSLEIN and Melchior THOMA were not married, but they had a son, George F. HAUSLEIN, born 29 Jan 1827 in Oberaltertheim. George came to IL with the other HAUSLEINS, about 1845, and married Augusta BISCHOFF on 30 Oct 1848 in Chicago. They lived in Chicago and had several children.

Johann Georg HAUSLEIN died at age 25, in Oberaltertheim.

Michael Johann Michle HAUSLEIN was the eldest of the family of immigrants. He and his wife Mary had 6 children in Oberalterheim, but 2 died in infancy. So they came to America in 1845 with 4 children: Martin (11), Melchior (10), Mary (7) and Caroline (4).

Anna Barbara HAUSLEIN died a month after childbirth, in 1841, Oberalterheim.

Edidus HAUSLEIN was 29 and single when he came to America with his brother and sister in 1845. He was known as Phillip in Kane County, IL, where he married and had 4 children. His wife and 4 children all died, and he remarried, to Sophie Maria Friedrica SASS, my 3g-grandmother. They had 4 more children. Phillip also adopted Sophie's son, Fred, who became Fred HAUSLEIN, my 2g-grandfather.

Dorothea "Dora" HAUSLEIN was the youngest of 6, and married Johann Michael HEMRICK in Oberalterheim, 1842. They had 2 or 3 sons when the came to America in 1845: Johann (2), Karl (1), and possibly Charles. Once in Kane County, they had 6 more children.

1844 map of counties in northeastern Illinois

In 1850, Michael and Philip were both in Hampshire Township, with one family between them in the census. Michel had real estate valued at $500, but Philip had none. Which is strange, since Philip purchased his land in 1845. Probably an oversight by the census taker. We now have approximate birth dates. Even the youngest was born in Germany, consistent with the 1845 immigration date.

Philip HAUSLEIN was living alone in 1850, according to the 1850 US Census. He lived next to his brother Michael HAUSLEIN and sister Dorothea (HAUSLEIN) HEMRICK and their families, in Hampshire Township, Kane County, IL.

Philip married on 27 Aug 1851, to Mary WASSOCK, in Kane County, IL. In Philip's will of 1893 she is called Mary D. WERBACH. See [AL, pp. 18-20].

County Court Records, Film # 1481107 - 1481109.

In 1860 Philip HAUSLEIN was in Hampshire County, with his first wife and daughter. Micheal (sic) WEIRBRICK might have been a farmhand, but John and William are too young to be farmhands. They were probably relatives.

Philip and Mary had 4 children, according to [AL, p. 15]. They all died in childhood. Their names were Anna "Margrett", Augustina G, Mary, and Lewis P. The only one living in 1860 was Margrett, age 2.

I have not found any record of Philip in the Civil War. The 1865 Illinois State Census for Hampshire, Kane, IL has the following 2 households:

Phillip HAEUSLIEN, 1 male 40-50, livestock $114, wool 15 lbs

M. HAUSLAIN, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 50-60, livestock $69, wool 20 lbs

Philip was living alone in 1865, as his wife and 4 children had died.

The U.S. General Land Office Records has a record of a purchase by Phillip HAUSLEIN, in Section 13, Hampshire Township, Kane County, IL. The sale is for 80 acres, at $1.25 per acre, for a total of $100. The date was 23 Sep 1845. Section 13 can be seen here. (Click the box.)

This 1872 map of Hampshire Township, Kane County, IL, shows a 100-acre farm belonging to M. HAUSLEIN, in Section 24, and a 180-acre farm belonging to P. HAUSLEIN, with 120 acres in Section 13, another 20 acres in Section 24, and 4o acres in adjoining Rutland Township. These are located near the center of the eastern edge of the map, which is the border between Hampshire and Rutland Townships. There is also an 80-acre farm, in Sections 13 and 24, under the name of M. HEMERICK, who was the husband of Dorothea, sister of Philip and Michael HAUSLEIN. Another 120-acre farm in Rutland Township, Sections 19 and 30, bears the name of M. HEMERICK.

1892 map shows part of Rutland Township, Kane County, IL

The 1892 plat map for Hampshire Township shows the same farms, with the spelling HAUSLINE instead of HAUSLEIN. Philip's bother Micheal had died in 1884, so M. HAUSLINE was probably one of Michael's sons, Martin or Malachi. The M. HEMRICK farm in Hampshire, Sections 13 and 24 is now owned in 1892 by J. HEMRICK. The additional 40 acres in Rutland Township, Section 18, is owned by P. HAUSLINE. The 120-acre farm in Rutland, Sections 19 and 30, owned by M. HEMERICK in 1872, is owned by Phillip HEMRICK in 1892.

In the 1904 plat map, the P. HAUSLEIN property of 1872 and 1892 was owned by G & C HAUSLEIN. This agrees with the information from the will of Philip HAUSLEIN, who died on 9 Jul 1893, and left this property to his sons, George and Charles [AL, pp. 18-20]. Part of the will is missing, so it's not clear whether Philip left any land to his adopted son, Fred HAUSLEIN, although Fred, George and Charles were all executors of his estate, valued at $1,200.

Philip and Sophie HAUSLEIN

Fred HAUSLEIN first appears in the 1870 US Census, with his mother and step-father, and 2 half-brothers.

This must be the right Philip HAUSLEIN, although he should be 54, not 43. Philip had real estate valued at $1,200 and personal estate $1,060. Recall that in 1850 his real estate was valued at $5,600. Philip and Sophia were born in Mecklenburg, Germany. This seems to contradict [AL] which says the HAUSLEINs were from Oberaltertheim, in south central Germany. Philip's sister, Dora (HAUSLEIN) HEMLICK, was listed immediately before Philip, and Dora's birthplace was Bavaria, which makes more sense.

In 1880, Philip and Sophia were still in Hampshire, with 4 children. Philip is back to the age we would expect, giving more evidence that his age in the 1870 Census was in error. Fred would be 23, and is not present. I have not yet found him in the 1880 Census. This census taker distinguished between Bavaria and Mackleburg (Mecklenburg). All 4 children had attended school within the past year, but the boys are listed as Farm laborers.

The will of Philip HAUSLEIN, shown in [AL, pp. 18-20] is pretty detailed, although page 2 is missing. It mentions all Philip's children, but not Fred, although Fred HAUSLEIN is one of the executors. This is further evidence that Fred is not Philip's son, but the son of Sophie SASS from a previous marriage.

As mentioned above, the 4 children of Philip HAUSLEIN with his first wife, Mary WASSOCK, all died in childhood. The child of Sophia SASS with her first husband was adopted by Philip HASUSLEIN, and became known ad Frederic "Fred" or "Fritz" HAUSLEIN. He was my gg-grandfather, and his family is covered on the Fred HAUSLEIN page. So the only HAUSLEINS that I share ancestry with are the descendants of Sophia SASS. The 4 children of Sophia SASS and Philip HAUSLEIN all lived to adulthood. They were George, Charles, Anna and Mary. The boys, George and Charles, were both single and had no offspring.

Sophia (SASS) HAUSLEIN was born 26 Oct 1825 and died 23 Mar 1893, at age 67. Philip HAUSLEIN was born 15 Dec 1815, and died on 9 Jul 1893, at age 77. So they died less than 4 months apart. They share a gravestone in Hampshire Center Cemetery, in Hampshire, Kane, IL.

The following sections cover each of the 4 children of Edidus "Philip" HAUSLEIN and Sophie M. F. SASS. And of course Fred HAUSLEIN, the child of Sophie who was adopted by Philip, is covered on the Fred HAUSLEIN page.

George HAUSLEIN was born about 1867 and died about 1937. [Note: There were other George HAUSLEINs in this extended family, including George M. HAUSLEIN, a first cousin once removed, also born about 1867, who lived in the same area.]

In 1900, bachelor farmers Charles and George were supporting their orphaned nieces, Bertha and Lavina. Charles, the younger brother, owned the farm, free of mortgage. I suspect that Charles and George were co-owners!) The parents of Bertha and Lavina would be Fred and Mary, and they were both born in Illinois, according to this. See the Fred HAUSLEIN page.

In 1920, George is single, living alone. The same thing in 1930.

Charles HAUSLEIN was born about 28 Jul 1868 in Hampshire, Kane, IL and died 13 Jun 1934 in Chicago, Cook, IL, at age 65. He never married or had children.

In 1930 Charles was living in Chicago with his niece, Georgia (HAUSLEIN) LARSEN, and her husband, Holger H. LARSEN. Holger was owner of the home, valued at $8,500, at 6240 South Talman Ave, and proud owner of a radio set. Holger and Georgia were 29 and 24 at first marriage, so they were married in 1926-7. Holger was a veteran of the World War, and working as a salesman for a bread company. Georgia was a bookkeeper for a furniture house. Charles was listed as an independent farmer, although I doubt that he was working on his farm every day, from Chicago. Charles is widowed, according to this census, but the death record (below) says he was single.

Anna HAUSLEIN was born 15 Nov 1870 and died 18 Nov 1934. She married William K. HEGELSCHAFER on 22 Feb 1891. William was b. 5 Mar 1863, d. 10 Mar 1927, the son of Paulus HEGELSCHAFER and Margaret WENZEL. [AL, p. 76]

They had 4 daughters, of which 1 died at age 10, and the other 3 lived to old age. The daughters were: Martha E., b. 1892, d. 9 Feb 1972; Frieda Hilda, b. 24 Nov 1896, d. 26 Nov 1906; Luella E, b. 2 Sep 1902, d. 14 Mar 1988; Alice Leora, b. 2 Sep 1902, d. 24 Nov 1994. These dates are on the gravestones.

In 1910 the HEGELSCHAFER family is found in Hampshire Township. William is a farmer, and owns his farm, free of mortgage. William and Anna were both 19 at first marriage, but they were 20 and 27 when they married each other, so maybe each had been married previously. I suspect that they meant to indicate that they had been married 19 years.

Mary S. HAUSLEIN was born 9 Jan 1873, and died 9 Mar 1909. She married Adoph C. WEEDE on 16 Dec 1897 in Kane County. They had a daughter, Georgia WEEDE, who married Holgar LARSON. [AL, p. 80]

Adolph WEEDE was born 11 Sep 1861, and died 11 May, 1929. These dates are on his gravestone.

The couple lived in the small village of Huntley in 1900. The census confirms that they had been married for 2 years, and Mary has not had any children. Adolph is a naturalized citizen, who immigrated in 1885. He works at a cheese factory, and owns his home, free of mortgage. The families listed before and after also have workers at a cheese factory.

Another Sophia and Fritz SASS

There was a Sophia SASS who lived near Davenport, IA. Her husband's name was Fritz, and he was born in Mecklenberg. Their sons were Fritz, Charley and George. These coincidences are interesting, although the dates don't match up. It seems likely that there is some connection between the two SASS families from Mecklenberg.

Fritz SASS suicide 1882

THE WIFE’S STORY—THE SON’S GOOD-BYE

That was a touching recital by Mrs. Sophia Sass, in telling the Coroner’s jury the circumstances under which she found her husband, Fritz Sass, whose death by suicide on Friday was announced in the DEMOCRAT of that evening. Here it is:

I am the wife of Fritz Sass, here lying dead. I have been married to him sixteen years. We have four boys—the oldest 15 years, the youngest nine years. I have not noticed anything peculiar in his actions. I had no idea that he would do such a thing. He has felt a little discouraged lately on account of being sickly and not able to work. He seemed, this morning, a little more discouraged. He asked me what he should do now? I told him to never mind, the children can help now! This morning, he said: Go down to the Bawden farm, and see if you can get pasture for the horse. I left the house and went down—started about 9 A. M., and got back at 1 P. M. I came in the house. I could not see him. I went into the room to see if he was lying on the lounge there. I went in front—he was not there. I went in the barn—the horse neighed, and I went to feed him—and I saw my husband’s legs hanging down. I uttered a cry—a neighbor woman came in, by the name of Mrs. Stump. I came into the house. Mrs. Stump notified the neighbors. My husband belongs to Germania Lodge No. 5, A. O. U. W., and to the sick society of Northwest Davenport. He was 47 years of age—born in Mecklenberg, Schwerein, Germany.

And the son Fritz, 12 years old, said: “I was up in East Davenport, working for Renwick, Shaw & Crossett, carrying strips. This morning he said to me, ‘good bye,’ and I said ‘good bye!’ He was always kind to us. He has been sick lately.”

And the jury gave a verdict that “Fritz Sass committed suicide by hanging, between the hours of 9 A. M. and 12 M., of the 16th day of June, A. D., 1882”—but said nothing as to any inducing cause.

Quad-City Times (Davenport, IA) Sunday, 18 Jun 1882, page 1

Fritz SASS was 47 at the time of his death on 16 Jun 1882, so he was born about 1835, in Mecklenberg. Fritz and Sophie had been married 16 years, so they were married about 1866. His 4 sons were 9 to 15, so they were born 1867 to 1873. In particular, his son Fritz was 12, so he was born about 1870.

In 1885, Sophia and 2 of her sons are found at 1608 W 2nd St, in Davenport.

Sophia SASS obituary 1899

Sass.

The death of Mrs. Sophia Sass occurred Saturday morning at 4 o’clock from the family residence, 1636 West Second street. The deceased was born in Germany, 67 years ago. For the past 31 years she has been a resident of this city. The deceased is survived by the following sons: Fritz, Charley and George.

The funeral will occur from the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. The interment will be in the City cemetery.

The Davenport Weekly Leader (Davenport, IA) Tuesday, 17 Oct 1899, page 3

Sophia SASS died on 14 Oct 1899 at her home in Davenport, IA, at age 67, so she was born in 1831-2. She had lived in Davenport 31 years, so she had been there since about 1868. Three of her sons were still living in 1899.

Again, this is not the Sophie SASS who married Philip HAUSLEIN. The two families are so similar that I am keeping track of both, in the hope that there is some connection.
