Hauslein, Fred

Frederic "Fritz" HAUSLEIN (1856-1899) and Mary BAUERS (1859-1894)

my gg-grandparents

The parents of Louisa HAUSLEIN, who married John GAPINSKI, were Frederic "Fritz" HAUSLEIN and Maria "Mary" BAUERS. See the John GAPINSKI page for more information on the GAPINSKI family.

Fred HAUSLEIN was born Friedrich Christian Ludwig SASS, on 2 Sep 1856 in Boddin, Mecklenburg, Germany. His parents were Sophia Maria Friederica SASS and Johann AWE, of Boddin.

Fred's mother married Philip HAUSLEIN on 8 May 1866, in Kane County, IL, and Fred was adopted by Philip. See the Sophie SASS page.

Mary BAUERS was born 31 May 1859, and died 17 Aug 1894, after childbirth, in Elgin, Kane, IL. Her birthplace is in doubt. See the section on birthplaces, below, and also the BAUERS page.

Fred and Mary both came to Kane County with their mothers, who later married. Neither Fred nor Mary had any full siblings, as far as I know, although Fred had 4 half-siblings.

Fred and Mary in Illinois

The HAUSLEIN family appeared in Kane County in the 1870 US Census. I have not found them in the 1880 census. The 1890 US Census was mostly destroyed by a fire. And Fred died in 1899, before the 1900 US Census. So he only appears in one US Census, that I have found.

Fred and Mary were married in Sep 1881, in Elgin, Kane, IL. Fred was 24 or 25, and Mary was 22.

Married

Esquire Lewis did the agreeable this morning for two souls who desired to beat as one. The happy couple were Fred Houselin, of Hampshire, and Miss Mary Bower, of South Elgin.

Father: Phillip Hanslein
Mother: Sophia Goss
Spouse: Mary Bower

Various records have Mary's surname as BAUER, BAUERS, BOWER, and BOWERS. Her parents were Jacob and Sarah BOWERS. Her paternal grandfather was also Jacob BAUER, so there may be some confusion. Mary's mother, Sarah, lost her eyesight due to Typhoid fever about 1860, the year after Mary was born. She married Adam DUMERAUF, also blind, about 1880 in Kane County, IL. So Adam was Mary's stepfather, but not during her childhood. See the BAUERS page.

Fred HAUSLEIN (here spelled HANSLEIN) was born about 1857. The record above says his father was Phillip HAUSLEIN, but other records indicate that Phillip was his step-father. Fred's mother was Sophia GOSS, or SASS. So Fred was probably born with another surname, possibly SASS, and took the name HAUSLEIN when he was adopted by Phillip.

MRS. MARY HAUSLEIN

Mrs. Mary Hauslein, wife of Fred Hauslein, died at 10 o’clock Sunday morning of uremic poisoning, aged 35 years, 5 months and 17 days. She leaves six children, one a newly born babe. She had lived here or at South Elgin for thirty years, the family home now being at 258 Jewett street. The funeral was held this afternoon. Drs Pelton, Clark, and Burlingame were called in consultation upon the case yesterday morning after the birth of the infant, but the mother’s condition was then past medical skill.

Elgin Daily News (Elgin, IL) 17 Sep 1894, posted by eim34174

This says that Mary (BAUERS) HAUSLEIN was born 31 May 1859 and died 17 Aug 1894, after childbirth. The baby died two months later (see below). However, the same article (above) appears in [AL, p. 74], with the date 28 Apr 1891. I think the 1894 date is correct, since the baby died in Nov 1894, at age 2 months.

Two articles appear in the same newspaper on the same day, with news of Fred HAUSLEIN's death, on 7 Feb 1899. He died at age 41, so he was born between 8 Feb 1857 and 7 Feb 1858.

Fred HAUSLEIN obituary

Fred Hauslein died at his home at Henpeck Tuesday morning of stomach trouble, sick for nearly a year. He was 41 years of age and leaves six children and two half brothers, George and Charlie, and a half sister Mary. The funeral was held at the house Thursday at 10 o'clock after which his remains were taken to Elgin for burial by the side of his wife and son who died a few years ago.

The Elgin Advocate (Elgin, IL) Saturday, 11 Feb 1899

Fred Hauslein, brother of Mrs. A Weede, died at his home at Old Hampshire Tuesday morning of cancer of the stomach. The remains were interred in the Elgin Cemetery, Thursday.

The Elgin Advocate (Elgin, IL) Saturday, 11 Feb 1899

These two articles were reproduced in [AL, p. 74], followed by this note, without citation.

Note: One son died prior to Fred Hauslein's death, however six girls were listed as living. They are:

Louise HAUSLEIN b. 11 Nov 1882
Minnie HAUSLEIN b. 22 Mar 1884
Mabel HAUSLEIN b. 22 Aug 1885
Bertha HAUSLEIN b. 22 Mar 1887
Emma HAUSLEIN b. 29 Jan 1889
Lavina HAUSLEIN b. 22 Apr 1891

The article above mentions Fred's sister, Mrs. A. WEEDE, who is actually his half-sister, Mary S. HAUSLEIN, who married Adolph C. WEEDE on 16 Dec 1897. The article fails to mention Fred's other half-sister, Anna. See the Sophie SASS page.

In 1900, bachelor farmers Charles and George are supporting their orphaned nieces, Bertha and Lavina. Charles owns the farm, free of mortgage. The parents of Bertha and Lavina would be Fred and Mary, and they were both born in Illinois, according to this. I don't know where the other HAUSLEIN sisters were in 1900. None of them were married yet.

Birthplaces

There is some confusion about the birthplaces of Fred and Mary. The census is usually a good resource for this, but I have only found Fred in the 1870 Census, which says he was born in Illinois. The 1870 US Census has Mary born in Luxemburg, and the 1880 US Census says France. The later census records of their children should provide a clue, since they give parents' birthplaces.

Fred HAUSLEIN is reported to have been born in Germany 8 times, Illinois 7 times, and Missouri 2 times out of 17.

Mary BAUERS is reported to have been born in France 4 times (counting Alsace-Lorraine), Germany 1 time, Illinois 10 times, and Missouri 2 times out of 17.

So there's no consensus! However, after a lot of searching, I think the record below is the right one, for Fred.

Fred was born Friedrich Christian Ludwig SASS, on 2 Sep 1856, in Boddin. His father was Johann AWE, who is, I now believe, my biological 2g-grandfather. It was customary, in this culture, for children to take the mother's surname. More information is on the Sophie SASS page.

Migration

This family has been difficult to track geographically, due to inconsistencies in the records. Fred was born in 1856, probably in Boddin, Germany, possibly elsewhere in Germany or IL or MO. He was probably with his mother in Kane County, IL when she married Phillip HAUSLEIN on 8 May 1866. So Fred and his mother probably immigrated from Germany to Kane, IL between 1856 and 1866. The 1870 US Census (above) has Fred and his mother in the HAUSLEIN family in Hampshire, Kane, IL. I haven't found Fred in the 1880 US Census, although his mother and stepfather were still in Hampshire, and I don't know what he was doing between 1870 and 1881.

Mary was born in 1859, probably in France, possibly in IL or MO. The 1870 US Census has her, with her mother and grandfather, in Elgin, Kane, IL. So Mary and her mother came to Kane County before 1870. In the 1880 US Census she was with her mother and stepfather, still in Elgin. See the BAUERS page.

Fred and Mary were married on 20 Sep 1881 in Elgin. Their first child, Louisa, was born 11 Nov 1882 in South Elgin. Their third child, Mabel, was born 22 Aug 1885 in Henpeck, Kane County. Their fourth child, Bertha, was born 22 Mar 1887 in St. Louis, MO, according to her death certificate. Census records all say that Bertha was born in MO. Their sixth child, Lavinia, was born 20 Apr 1893 in Huntley, Kane County. Mary died 17 Aug 1894, and her obituary (above) says "She had lived here [Elgin] or at South Elgin for thirty years, the family home now being at 258 Jewett street." Fred died on 7 Feb 1899, in Henpeck.

Summary: Fred and Mary both came to Kane County with their mothers. Before marriage, Fred was probably on the HAUSLEIN farm near Henpeck, in Section 13, Hampshire Township, and Mary was in Elgin. After marriage in 1881, they lived the rest of their lives in northern Kane County, except for a brief time in St Louis, MO around 1887.

1904 map of the north part of Kane County, IL. South Elgin was previously called Clintonville. The lost village of Henpeck was in the east central part of Hampshire Township. The Phillip HAUSLEIN farm was in Section 13, Hampshire. The village of Huntley was partly in Rutland Township, Kane County, and partly in McHenry County, north of Kane. Most of the population of Kane County has always been concentrated along the Fox River, which runs south thru the eastern part of the county, through Dundee, Elgin, St Charles, Geneva and Aurora.

The Family

Fred and Mary had 6 daughters and 1 son, from 1882 to 1894. Mary died shortly after giving birth to her only son, who only lived about 2 months. Fred was left with daughters, age 11, 10, 9, 7, 5 and 4. Fred also died less than 5 years later, and the girls were orphans, and went to live with other family members.

Guy Lund has a new job

L. E. Lancaster has a new clerk from Elgin in the person of Guy F. Lund.

The Herald (Crystal Lake, Illinois), Thu, Sep 25, 1902, Page 1, in the section on Cary, IL.

The clipping above shows that Guy F. LUND had a job as a clerk, in Cary, IL. Cary and Crystal Lake are both towns in McHenry County, IL, just north of Kane County. This was less than a year before he married Minnie HAUSLEIN.

The 1903 Elgin city directory has Guy LUND, driver, Fleischman yeast co, home 953 Highland ave, Elgin. The same directory has Miss Minnie C. HAUSLEIN, employee at a watch factory, boarding at 320 Larkin ave, Elgin. This must refer to the world famous Elgin National Watch Company, a major employer in Elgin.

The 1910 US Census says that Guy and Minnie had been married, 7 years, each on their first marriage, and Minnie has had 2 children, both still living. All of this agrees with the records above. They lived in a rented home at 117 Westerham Street, Elgin, IL. Guy was an Agent for some company. Maybe Fleischman Yeast Company?

Guy F. LUND occupation and industry/employer in 1910 US Census

In 1920, Minnie is a widow, with the same 2 children, living at 50 Du Bois Ave. She owns the home, free of mortgage. She has a job at a case factory (?) and her son is a printer, at age 15.

The 1920 Elgin city directory has Minnie LUND, widow of Guy, residing at 18 DuBois ave.

Ethel LUND, daughter of Guy and Minnie, married on 28 Jun 1926 in Elgin, to David John WALLER, born 1 May 1896 in Hebron, McHenry, IL. She was 18 or 19, and he was 29.

The 1923 Hammond, IN city directory has David J WALLER, fireman for Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. He had a room at "Bungaloo Gib" which may mean a bungalow on Gibson street.

The 1926 Hammond, IN city directory has David J WALLER, engineer, residing at 85 Sibley St, Hammond.

The 1930 Census has Minnie and her son Gordon living at 56 Du Bois Ave, Elgin. Ethel and her husband and son are found at 911 N 12th Ave, Melrose Park, Cook, IL. Minnie and Ethel were both working as beauty operators. Gordon was a printer, and Ethel's husband was a fireman for the railroad. (The census says that Ethel's father was born in MO and her mother in IL, but those seem to be switched.)

The 1930 Chicago Telephone Directory also has David J WALLER residing at 911 N 12th Ave, Melrose Park.

In 1927 and 1929 Minnie and her son Gordon lived at 56 DuBois Ave, on the west side of Elgin. Minnie was manager of Fox Beauty Parlor, and Gordon was working at Cook publishing company. In 1931 they were still at 56 DuBois Ave, with Minnie now working at Lincoln Beauty Shop, and Gordon was a compositor. By 1933 Gordon had a wife, Hattie H, and they lived at 474 Laurel. Gordon was still a printer, working in St Charles. Minnie lived at 22 S DuBois Ave, and worked as a beauty operator at Swan. So Minnie lived in at least 4 different locations on DuBois Ave, and worked for several beauty shops.

Minnie and Guy are buried in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin.

Gordon Lund, who has been employed for the last nine years by the David C. Cook Publishing company of Elgin, is now employed as printer at the Harold Woodworth print shop.

Gordon Lund obituary, 24 Aug 1984, News-Press (Ft Myers, FL)

Harriet Hilda (SMITH) LUND

David John WALLER

In 1935 Gordon and Harriet were living at 474 Laurel St, Elgin, the same place as 1933. Gordon was employed at Roto-Color Inc in St Charles, Kane County. He stayed with Roto-Color from 1935 thru at least 1951.

In 1937 Gordon and Harriet lived at 466 Cleveland Ave, Elgin, where they stayed thru at least 1951. This is in the east part of Elgin.

The city of Elgin is partly in Elgin Township, Kane County, and partly in Hanover Township, Cook County. 474 Laurel St is on the east side of Elgin, but still in Kane County. Cleveland Ave runs north and south, in Hanover, Cook County, about 50 feet east of the county line. Hanover Township is in the northwest "panhandle" of Cook County.

The 1940 US Census has Gordon and Harriet (SMITH) LUND, with their first child, living at 466 Cleveland Ave, Elgin, Hanover Township, Cook County, IL. They owned the home, valued at $5,500. Gordon was a printer at a publishing house. They had lived at the same place in 1935.

David and Ethel (LUND) WALLER and their 2 sons are found at 1207 Eleventh Ave, Melrose Park, Cook County, IL in the 1940 Census. They owned a home valued at $3,000. David was a locomotive engineer for a steam railroad. They had lived at the same place in 1935. This is about 12 miles west of downtown Chicago.

WWII draft card for Gordon LUND

The WWII draft card for Gordon LUND, dated 15 Feb 1942, gives us his middle name, Reginald. His employer is Pioneer Publishing, based in St Charles, must be associated with Roto-Color Inc. His actual work location is not in St Charles, but 100 S Marion, Oak Park, IL. This is in Cook County, just 10 miles west of downtown Chicago, and a 30-mile commute from 466 Cleveland Ave, Elgin.

The WWII draft card for David John WALLER, dated 23 Apr 1942, gives his employer as Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, and his work location is Franklin Park, about 4 miles northeast of his home at 1207 Eleventh Ave, Melrose Park. This railroad still runs between Franklin Park and Hammond, IN. Several photos from 1943 are here.

WWII draft card for David John WALLER

The 1950 US Census had Gordon, Harriet and their son Kenneth, still at 466 Cleveland Ave, where they had lived since 1937. Gordon was now a Compositor (a person who arranges type for printing or keys text into a composing machine) at a Printing Shop, and Harriet had begun work as a Secretary for the Brethren Church.

David and Ethel were still at 1207 Eleventh Ave, Melrose Park, Cook County, IL in 1950, the same place as 1935, 1940 and 1942. David was still an engineer for the railroad. Curiously, their 11-year-old son David W. WALLER had an occupation as an interior decorator, although he was "unable to work" at the time of the census.

John F. WALLER, elder son of David and Ethel, had married and started a family in Maywood. They lived at 420 21st Ave, Maywood, Cook, IL. John was a printer, like his uncle Gordon.

Between 1951 and 1954 Gordon and Harriet moved to 479 Glenwood Trail, north of Elgin. They lived at this address until at least 1960. Gordon was a printer/compositor, and Ethel worked for the General Brotherhood Board–Church of the Brethren, as a clerk in 1954, and as an accountant in 1955-60. The Church of the Brethren has operated the Brethren Press in Elgin since 1897.

Gordon and Harriet moved to Bonita Springs, Lee, FL some time between 1960 and 1984, since Gordon died there, and Harriet survived him.

Kenneth James LUND, son of Gordon and Ethel, graduated from Tri-State (now called Trine) College in Angola, IN with a degree in thermodynamics. Kenneth married Erna Ann ECKERT on 6 Sep 1959 in Angola. They moved to CA, and lived in Bellflower, Los Angeles County, CA in 1960 and Westminster, Orange County, CA in 1963.

3. Mabel Salome HAUSLEIN was born 22 Aug 1885 in Henpeck, Kane County, IL, and was baptized on 8 Jun 1890 at the United Methodist Church in Hampshire, Kane, IL. [AL, p. 14] She died 24 Apr 1956 in Belvidere, Boone, IL.

Mabel was almost 9 when her mother died, and 13 when her father died. She must have been taken in by relatives, but I haven't found her in the 1900 US Census.

She married on 5 or 6 Nov 1902 in Carpentersville, Kane, IL to Edward Carl HUMBRACHT, born 14 Nov 1882 in Elgin, died 15 Sep 1967 in Belvidere. So she was 17 and he was almost 20.

Poor Horse

One Tuesday evening while Mrs. Ed Humbracht and baby and Miss Vina Hauslein, from near Hampshire, were returning from Marengo, one of their horses dropped in the road, frightening them badly. Assistance came and got the horse up; they were then taken in and cared for by neighbors until their friends could come with another horse.

Marengo Republican-News (Marengo, Illinois), Fri, Aug 25, 1905, Page 1

In 1910, Mabel and Edward are found in Hampshire Township. They have been married 7 years, both in their first marriage. Mabel has had 2 children, with 2 still living. This is consistent with other records. Edward and family are listed next to his father, William HUMBRACHT, so they are probably living on the same property, or next door. Edward is a Teamster and his father is a Farmer. Also, William has/had been married 33 years, and has had 3 children, all still living.

The census says that Mabel was 20 in 1910, but that would mean she was married at age 12 or 13, so it is a mistake. Her children Willy and Emma were born about 1904 and 1906. Other records indicate that William Harold HUMBRACHT was born 18 Nov 1902 in Huntley, McHenry, IL and Emma Caroline HUMBRACHT was born 19 Mar 1907 in Genoa, DeKalb, IL. So they moved several times in the first 6 years of marriage, probably since Edward was working as a farmhand.

Edward's WWI draft card, dated 12 Sep 1918, shows that they had moved to Belvidere, Boone County, IL and lived at 620 E Pleasant Street. Edward was a machinist at National Sewing Machine Company, located at State and Meadow St, Belvidere. He was tall and slender, with dark brown hair and eyes.

In 1920 they have moved to a rented home at 620 East Pleasant Street, Belvidere. Mabel's parents were both born in Germany. Edward is illiterate, a laborer at a railroad. His son William is a "Handle Tipper" at a casket company.

Emma Caroline HUMBRACHT married Glyndon Deestan HAMMOND in Boone County, IL, 1924. Glyndon was born 12 Nov 1904 in Belvidere, son of Wright G. HAMMOND and Gertrude L. GORHAM. The exact wedding date is not known, but they were still single on 10 Aug 1924, when they were involved in a serious auto accident.

Hurled Through Windshield

Glyndon Hammond and Miss Emma Humbracht are recovering from cuts and bruises received Sunday when they were hurled through the windshield of Hammond’s car as the result of a collision with a Ford car driven by a Rockford man whose name was not learned. The accident occurred four miles from Belvidere on the Genoa road. The Rockford man is said to have crowded the Hammond car on a narrow stretch of road and the cars hit head-on.

William Harold "Willy" HUMBRACHT married on 16 Aug 1925 in Salem, Marion, OR to Erdeena Roxanna "Dee" COTHREN, born 5 Jun 1906 in Atwood, Logan, CO. Willy was 22 and Dee was 19.

William Harold HUMBRACHT
(not sure who the woman is, probably Dee?)

Right: Dee (COTHREN)(HUMBRACHT)(CLARK) obituary, unknown newspaper

William and Dee started their married life in Salem, OR. They must have returned to Belvidere, IL soon, since their daughter Della was born 16 May 1926 in Belvidere. Maybe they traveled back and forth several times? At any rate, Dee's obituary must be incorrect in saying that she was a restaurant manager in OR from 1929 to 1937. She did return to OR after leaving/divorcing William, in late 1930.

They lived in Belvidere in 1930, in an apartment rented for $20/month at 918 West Locust Street. William was a Taxi Driver, and Dee was a Waitress. They had 1 child, and they owned a radio set.

The 1930 US Census has Edward and Mabel at 420 Buchanan Street, Belvidere, in a home they rent for $14 per month. Edward is a Laborer for the City. Next door, at 418 Buchanan Street, we find daughter Emma and her family. Glyndon is called Edward HAMMOND, a Salesman at a Furniture Store. Their home also rents for $14 per month.

William (918 West Locust St) lived about 1 mile ENE of his father and sister (420 Buchanan St), and about 1/3 mile N of his sister, Lavina (see below). Their other sister, Bertha, was also in Boone County (see below).

ANOTHER MAN UNDER ARREST FOR ROBBERY

ELGIN AUTHORITIES HOLDING MYRON VANTISSLIN IN CONNECTION WITH ALLEGED ROBBERY OF EDWARD HUMBRACHT, OF BELVIDERE, IN BURR OAKS ROADHOUSE ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

Another man is under arrest at Elgin in the investigation of the alleged robbery of Edward Humbracht of Belvidere, while he was in Burr Oaks roadhouse on Christmas eve. He is Myron Vantisslin, residing on a farm a short distance from the roadhouse.

Vantisslin denies all knowledge of the alleged robbery although authorities state that his story and that of George Hidenreich, also under arrest, are conflicting in details.

Humbracht informed authorities that he stopped at the roadhouse early Christmas eve and that while there, two men engaged in a fight. He started for the door but someone struck him over the head with a club and knocked him unconscious. When he recovered, his wallet and watch were missing.

Hidenreich took him to his automobile and gave him back his wallet. Humbracht claims that $75 was missing from the wallet. He drove to Elgin and swore out a warrant for Hidenreich, who was shortly afterward taken into custody at Hampshire while attending church with a lady friend.

He denied all knowledge of the robbery, although he admitted that two men engaged in a fight in his place and that he was forced to throw them out.

The cases against the two men are expected to come up in Elgin police court within a day or so,

William and Dee were together for the 1930 Census (above), but Dee filed for divorce in Sep 1930. Dee went to OR with their daughter Della, and William remarried, on 24 Aug 1935 in Boone County, to Grace M SMITH, born 10 Mar 1917 in IL. So William was 32 and Grace was 18. William alternated between taxi driver and chef, and Grace was a waitress, and later a restaurant manager.

Mrs. William H. Humbracht (Miss Grace Smith) was guest of honor Friday evening at a miscellaneous shower given at the home of Mrs. Adam Holroyd, of East Hurlbut avenue, assisted by her daughters, Miss Gla, and Mrs. Madge Klass.

The bride was the recipient of many pretty and useful gifts together with the congratulations of her friends. Twenty-two young women were on hand for the delightful occasion. The decorations were in orchid and gold.

Games and contests were the diversions of the evening and dainty refreshments were served. The guests departed at a late hour extending the bride their best wishes.

These clippings (below) from the Belvidere Daily Republican (Belvidere, IL) refer to Belvidere Recreation, a bowling alley and pool/billiard parlor at 111 Buchanan Street. The grand opening was celebrated in a 2-page spread on 5 Sep 1930. By 1935 they had beer on tap, meals and lunches, fountain service, and on 20 Jul 1936, William "Bill" HUMBRACHT was put in charge of the lunch counter. Later ads referred to it as a restaurant, called "Hummy's Lunch", or "Hummie's Lunch". William was also very active in the bowling league. In 1942 Belvidere Recreation started selling fishing licenses, and in 1950 they added a package liquor store. William managed the restaurant until at least 1950.

In the 1940 US Census, Ed and Mabel are found at 505 N State St, Belvidere, in an apartment they rented for $15 per month. Ed was a laborer at a steam railroad, currently unemployed. His income was $544 in 1939.

Emma and her husband Glyndon HAMMOND had a large family by 1940, at 922 Webster St, Belvidere. This is next to Glyndon's parents, at 921 Webster. There was also a SCHULTZ family at 921 Webster. The Wright G. HAMMOND home was valued at $800, and the Amos SCHULTZ home at $200. Glyndon's home value looks like $700, but it also looks like he was a renter, and the transcriber at Ancestry has the value $1,000. Glyndon was a laborer in building construction, his father was manager at a retail furniture store, and his brother Everett was a crane operator at a machine tool factory. All over 5 had lived at the same place in 1935. Donald should be Ronald.

In 1940 William HUMBRACHT and his 2nd wife, Grace, and their 2 children lived at 108 E Second St, Belvidere. They rented a house for $25/month. William was proprietor of a restaurant.

They had 2 daughters, Dorothy and Jean Ann. The transcriber for Ancestry has the latter as Josie Ann, but it looks more like Jean Ann, to me. Her age may be 12, which doesn't make sense, since she wasn't in William's family in 1930, and she can't be Grace's daughter, since Grace was only 11 years older. Maybe Jean Ann's age was ?/12, so she was born less than a year before 1 Apr 1940. Other records indicate that she was born 20 Jul 1939. William and Grace were married in 1935, so Dorothy and Jean Ann were their daughters.

HUMBRACHT family names and ages, cropped from the 1940 US Census

The newspaper article below says that Jean Ann was 20 months old on 27 Mar 1941, so she was born about Jul 1939. Later records (below) indicate that her birthdate was 26 Jul 1939.

William HUMBRACHT and the person preceding him, occupation and industry, cropped from 1940 Census (above).

The census taker was very sloppy. The occupation of the person preceding William is "farmer & stock buyer" in "Gen Farm" but is the word under Gen Farm "Corn" or is it "Co??m" above Restaurant?

The 1940 Census has Dee (COTHREN) HUMBRACHT in Canyonville, OR where she had moved in with her mother and sister. Her daughter Della was 18. Dee and her sister Ina and Ina's husband A. GREGG were co-owners of an "Auto Comp" business. They also lived with a 21-year-old waitress, Melba WILSON, who had 1 year of college, but was not currently in school. Curiously, Melba's relationship to the head of household, and her occupation, were both "Waitress".

In 1935, Dee and Della had lived in Camas, Clark County, WA. The GREGGs and Etta were in Salem, Marion, OR. Melba was in rural Douglas County, OR.

William's WWII draft card was dated 16 Feb 1942. He still lived at 118 East Second St, and was self-employed, not an employee, at Belvidere Recreation, 111 Buchanan St.

LITTLE GIRL IS STRICKEN AND DIES IN HOME

DOROTHY MAE HUMBRACHT, DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. WILLIAM HUMBRACHT, SUCCUMBS UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN SHE SUFFERS EMBOLISM TO HEART—RITES TO BE FRIDAY.

Mr. and Mrs. William Humbracht, 118 East Second street, today mourn the death of their six-year-old daughter, Dorothy Mae, who died unexpectedly at 12:45 this morning from a heart embolism, according to the attending physician.

Dorothy Mae had her tonsils removed last Friday and had been bleeding some since but the physician in charge asserted that this was in no way connected with her death. The inhalator was rushed to the home from the city hall but its use was unavailing.

The little girl was born here July 4, 1936, and attended kindergarten. She was also an attendant at Sunday school at the South Baptist church.

Besides her parents she leaves a sister, Jean Ann, age 3; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Humbracht, and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Atkins-Johnson funeral home with the Rev. R. D. Walter officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home at any time.

The 1950 US Census has Edward HUMBRACT, age 67, living at the Julien Hotel, in Belvidere. His marital status is Separated. He is listed as Unable to Work. I have not found Mabel in the 1950 Census.

William HUMBRACHT and his 2nd wife, Grace, lived at 615 Maple Street, Belvidere, in 1950. William was owner and operator of a restaurant, and Grace was a helper.

In 1950 Emma and Glyndon HAMMOND lived at 922 Webster, the same place as in 1940. Glyndon was a truck driver for a furniture store, and had worked 60 hours the week before the census. His brother Everett and family (not shown here) lived next door, at 920 Webster. Their parents were absent.

Lavina Hauslein married Francis D. Silvius

EXCHANGE VOWS OF MARRIAGE

Miss Lavina Hauslein Becomes the Bride of Francis D. Silvius, the Marriage Being Performed by Father Murphy.

On Monday afternoon at three o’clock occurred the marriage of Miss Lavina Hauslein of Elgin, Ill., and Francis D. Silvius of this city. They were married at St. James parsonage, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Father Murphy. The young couple were attended by Miss Maude C. Waugh and the groom’s brother, Hugh E. Silvius.

The bride wore a very becoming costume of Copenhagen blue. Miss Hauslein formerly lived in Elgin but for the past two years has been an employe (sic) of the National. Since coming to this city she has gained many friends who will hasten to offer their best wishes for a bright and happy future.

The groom is a well known young man of this city. He has been engaged at the S. E. Morse coal office for several years. His many friends will extend congratulations for a happy and prosperous future.

After a brief visit at Racine and other points in Wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Silvius will return to this city and begin housekeeping at 119 First street.

In 1910 the young couple lives at 129 First Street, Belvidere, in a dwelling shared with the Eugene B. SULLIVAN family (possibly 2 apartments). Francis is a grocery delivery man. I'm not sure if Eudora's age is 1 2/12, or 12/12, or just 2/12.

In 1920 the SILVIUS family has a rented home, in Belvidere, with 4 children. Francis is a salesman for a retail grocery.

The 1930 Census has the family in a home rented for $25 per month, at 816 South Main Street, Belvidere. They have 6 children, and a female lodger, a coworker of Margaret. Francis' 75-year-old father is also in the household. Like most of their neighbors, they do have a radio set!
