Huntley, Aaron 5

Aaron 5 HUNTLEY (1680 - 1748) and Deborah DE WOLF (1690 - aft. 1748)

my 6g-grandparents

Aaron 5 HUNTLEY was born on 1 Dec 1680 in Lyme, Colony of Connecticut, the son of Aaron 3 HUNTLEY and Mary CHAMPION.

He married in Lyme, 27 Jul 1707, to Deborah DEWOLF, born in Lyme on 25 Jul 1690, daughter of Stephen and Hannah (JONES) (RANSOM) DEWOLF. He was 26 and she was 2 days past 17. They had 11 children, in Lyme, from 1708 to 1731.

Aaron 5 HUNTLEY died on 26 Sep 1748, in Lyme, and Deborah (DEWOLF) HUNTLEY survived her husband.

Please see my page on Lyme for more information.

Several vital records for Lyme are replicated in the records of Gill, Franklin, MA. Records on Ancestry, listing the same person, on the same date, in both Lyme, CT and Gill, MA. This seems to be a systematic error. Maybe a book of vital records was misfiled. I doubt if many HUNTLEYs ever lived in Gill, MA.

I am using the numbering system of [VH]. Unfortunately, this only kept track of males. It would be useful to have a way to distinguish between all the Hannah and Ruth HUNTLEYs!

There is some overlap between the families of Aaron 5 and his brother John 4, because John 4's son Samuel 13 married Aaron 5's daughter Ruth. Yes, they were first cousins! See the ancestor chart on the Benjamin HUNTLEY page.

Descendants

Aaron 5 HUNTLEY and Deborah DE WOLF had 11 children, and 55 grandchildren, that I've found. Several of the grandchildren married each other, as 1st cousins. Others intermarried with the MACK, GEE, SMITH and other prominent families in Lyme. The HUNTLEYs and allied families stayed in Lyme for more than 100 years. In the decade before the American Revolution, several branches of these families removed about 120 miles north, along the Connecticut River valley, and settled in Marlow, Cheshire, NH.

1. Hannah HUNTLEY was born 22 Jul 1708 in Lyme, and died in 1796. She married on 30 Apr 1728 in Lyme, to Ebenezer MACK, who died in 1777, "while bringing in the back log." Ebenezer was the son of John MACK and Sarah BAGLEY, of Lyme. [IHH, p. 21]

Ebenezer MACK (1697 - 1777) is sometimes conflated with his nephew, Ebenezer MACK (1715 - 1792), who was Pastor of the First Baptist Church of East Lyme.

i. Phebe MACK married Amos 19 HUNTLEY, son of Daniel 6 HUNTLEY, who was son of Aaron 3 Huntley, so Phebe and Amos 19 were 1st cousins, 1x removed.

iii. Solomon MACK married Lydia GATES. One of their 8 children was Lucy MACK, who married Joseph SMITH Sr. Lucy and Joseph were the parents of Joseph SMITH, founder of the Mormon church. [SFA] The Mormon Church, a.k.a. Latter Day Saints, take genealogy very seriously, so there is a large amount of information available on this family. In addition, Solomon wrote an extensive autobiography [SM], describing his adventures, military service, illnesses, and conversion to Christianity. It is a priceless resource for all of his descendants. Their son Stephen MACK also has a Wikipedia page.

I, SOLOMON MACK, was born in Connecticut, in the town of Lime near the mouth of [the] Connecticut River, September 26, 1735, my parents, (Ebenezer and Hannah Mack.) Ebenezer Mack departed this life in 1777. He went to the door to fetch in a back-log and returned after a fore-stick and instantly dropped down dead on the floor. You may see by this our lives are dependent on a supreme and independent God. Hannah Mack departed this life in 1796 with a long fit of sickness; she experienced the power of God from an early age, with all the good morals of life, and instructing the youth for about thirty years. She died rejoicing and wishing her last moments to come. Rejoicing she went home to meet her Father in the realms of eternal bliss.

My parents had a large property and lived in good style. From various misfortunes, and the more complicated evils attendant on the depravity of the sons of men, my parents became poor, and when I was four years old the family, then consisting of five children, were obliged to disperse and throw themselves upon the mercy of an unfeeling and evil world. I was bound out to a farmer in the neighborhood. As is too commonly the case, I was rather considered as a slave than a member of the family, and, instead of allowing me the privilege of common hospitality and a claim to that kind protection due to the helpless and indigent children, I was treated by my master as his property and not as his fellow mortal; he taught me to work and was very careful that I should have little or no rest.... [SM]

v. Samuel MACK was born on 15 Nov 1736 in Lyme, and died on 14 Oct 1783 in Nova Scotia, at the age of 46. He moved to Port Medway, Nova Scotia, Canada, and started a lumber business.

Samuel Mack was a great bridge builder, being the first one to build a dam across the Connecticut River. He built with help of his brother Solomon, and also his nephew Solomon, the dam at Bellows Falls. [MG, p. 882]

Samuel Mack is of interest not only as the archetypal "Connecticut Yankee" entrepreneur, the founder of what was to become the Edward Doran Davison lumber empire, which relocated to Bridgewater after the devastating fire of 1865, but as a slave-holder. (He advertised for the return of run-away slave Chance.) Mack was the great uncle of Joseph Smith Jr., the Mormon Prophet (Samuel's brother Solomon was Smith's maternal grandfather) and foster-parent to William Burke, credited with being the first permanent settler in North Queens. Samuel Mack was responsible for establishing the Macks as the dominant family at Port Medway Mills, later Mills Village, finally Mill Village. [OPMC]

This story of lumbering starts with Samuel Mack who came from Connecticut in the 1760's and landed in the new settlement of Liverpool. His family was having hard times when Sam was born (~1737) but fortunes changed for him when he married Lydia Brainerd from a prosperous farming family. The Mack family was notable for their ability in milling and dam building, having built a substantial dam across the Connecticut River. Samuel's brother Solomon had a life filled with misfortune yet Solomon's daughter, Lucy, had a son, Joseph Smith (Jr) who became the "prophet" and founder of the Mormon church.

Samuel's father-in-law may have funded an earlier trip to Nova Scotia to assess the timberlands here. Samuel had 2 daughters by Lydia who died soon after in 1760. He moved to Nova Scotia about 2 years later, and purchased a share in a lumber mill that had been recently built by Stephen Smith and William Cohoon, and funded by 6 other Liverpool proprietors. The location of that mill was first called Port Medway Mills, (or Port Mills) then Mills Village and now Mill Village, Queens County, Nova Scotia. Mack bought this mill from the other owners and built another mill nearby (both mills perhaps on a small island in the Medway River), and had a good business from this location and a regular association with Simeon Perkins, another notable Nova Scotian.

Samuel was married in 1766 to Desire Cohoon (alt Cahoon), the daughter of one of the original founders and proprietors of Liverpool. Samuel and Desire had several children, the male children also continuing in the lumber business well into the 1800's. By all accounts, Samuel and his progeny became respectable mill owners and businessmen.

Several years later, Patrick Doran arrived in 1777 (although one document indicates an earlier date) from Ireland and he worked for Simeon Perkins (made a Captain of the militia) and then worked for Samuel Mack. . Samuel Mack died at 46 (1783), possibly from pneumonia and Desire inherited or purchased some of the most useful aspects of Samuels estate, the mills , saws, harnesses etc.. Patrick Doran married the widow Desire (Cohoon) Mack not long after. Patrick kept up the lumber business (which apparently included fishing rights) on the Medway River. They had 3 children, one of whom was Eleanor Doran. Eleanor Doran married Samuel Davison from Horton, Nova Scotia (a descendant of New England planters) in 1818 and they had 3 children. Both Samuel and Eleanor Davison died within 7 years and of their 3 children, only one child lived past 1828... Edward Doran (E.D.) Davison. He was mostly raised by his Aunt Catherine Doran who managed the lumber business very effectively until Edward became old enough to take on the business, she apparently was a very capable business woman. [DLC]

Samuel MACK married (1) Lydia BRAINARD or BRAINERD on 23 Feb 1758, in Chatham, Middlesex, CT. Lydia was born 18 Aug 1736 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, daughter of Abijah BRAINERD and Esther SMITH. Samuel and Lydia had 2 daughters, in East Haddam, Middlesex, CT. The family moved to Nova Scotia about 1764. Lydia must have died, and Samuel married (2) Desiah "Desire" COHOON, born 19 Apr 1747 in Chatham, Barnstable, MA. They had 3 sons, in Nova Scotia.

vi. Hepzibah MACK married Abijah TUBBS, probably before 1761, when the 1st of their 7 children was born. Abisha TUBBS served as a Sergeant for at least 1 month 7 days, in the New Hampshire Militia, in Col Benjamin BELLOWS’ Regiment, from 6 May 1777 to 13 Jun 1777.

vii. Stephen MACK was born 15 Jun 1742 in Lyme. He served in the French and Indian wars, and died on 15 Sep 1762 in Hebron, CT, probably in action. He was 20, and had no known wife or children.

viii. Elisha MACK was born 16 Jul 1745 in Lyme, and died 15 Nov 1820 in Deerfield, MA, age 75. His wife was Diadamia RATHBONE, born Mar 1743 in Lyme, died Nov 1799 in Deerfield, MA. They moved around in New England, and had at least 5 children, from 1771 to 1786, so they were probably married about 1770.

Elisha Mack, b. Lyme, Conn., came from Marlow to Gilsum, and removed thence to Montague (Mass.). He was a private in Capt. Samuel Wetherbee's company of Col. Isaac Wyman's regiment, July, 1776, and was at Ticonderoga, Nov. 1776. The following year he was lieutenant in Capt. Davis Howlet's company, and marched to Lake Champlain, in May; later he was a captain in Col. Moses Nichols's regiment, Stark's brigade, July-Sept. 1777. May 31, 1779, he led the "Keene Raid," an unlawful attempt to seize a much disliked Tory of Keene. Capt. Mack was prominent in various ways, was a mill owner, and in 1778-79 bridged the Ashuelot River. [ED, p. 27]

ix. Azuba MACK married Jasper 26 HUNTLEY, son of Peter 10 HUNTLEY, so Azuba and Jasper were 1st cousins, 1x removed.

2. Aaron 14 HUNTLEY was born 14 Sep 1710, in Lyme, and died 18 Nov 1763 in Lyme, age 53. He married in Jun 1738 to Mary LEACH, born 9 May 1719 in Windham County, CT, still living in 1797. They lived in Lyme, and had 6 children: Stephen 33, Naomi, Sylvanus 34, Reuben 35, Bethuel 36, and Zenas 37.

i. Stephen 33 HUNTLEY was born 25 Mar 1740 in Lyme, and died 28 Aug 1825, age 85. He married Lydia BROCKWAY on 27 Nov 1777 in Lyme. Lydia BROCKWAY was born 20 Apr 1755 in Lyme, and died 14 Mar 1815, age 59. They moved to NY between 1779 and 1789, and appeared in the 1790 US Census in Canaan, Columbia, NY, with a household of 2, presumably Stephen and Lydia. They settled in Chenango County, NY by 1813. They had at least 1 son in Lyme, and 2 more born in NY. Stephen 33 and Lydia are buried in East Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, NY.

ii. Naomi HUNTLEY was born 14 Feb 1742/43 in Lyme, and died 30 Dec 1825, age 82, She married about 1765 to John TILLOTSON, born 6 Apr 1742/43 in Lyme, died 11 Mar 1819, age 75. Their movements are uncertain, but they had at least 3 children, and appeared in 1810 alongside Naomi's brother Stephen, in Sherburne, Chenango, NY. They are both buried in East Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, NY.

iii. Sylvanus 34 HUNTLEY was born 31 Aug 1749 in Lyme, died 12 Sep 1825 in NY. His wife's name was Mehitable. They lived in Marlow, Cheshire, NH in 1790, 1795 and 1800, and by 1810 they had settled in Smithville, Chenango, NY. Sylvanus is buried in Perkins Cemetery, Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY.

iv. Reuben 35 HUNTLEY was born 25 Sep 1752 in Lyme, and died 13 Aug 1847, age 94. He married on 14 Mar 1776 to Lovice HUNTLEY, born 11 Feb 1759 in Lyme, died 1828 in Lyme, age 69. So they were 23 and 17 when they married. They had 7 children, in Lyme.

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, serving in the First Company, Capt. PARSONS, Sixth Regiment, Col. PARSONS, Connecticut Continental, and was placed on the pension rolls on 10 Apr 1833, at age 84.

Reuben and Lovice were double 1st cousins, 0x removed and 1x removed, because Lovice was a daughter of Amos 19 HUNTLEY and Phebe MACK, a grandson and g-granddaughter of Aaron 3 HUNTLEY and Mary CHAMPION. The HUNTLEYs has been in Lyme for 115 years by 1776!

Reuben 35 HUNTLEY stayed in Lyme, not following his siblings to Chenango, NY, until 1840, when he appeared as an 89-year-old veteran in the Ezra HUNTLEY household, in New Berlin, Chenango, NY. He is buried in East Hill Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango, NY.

v, Bethuel 36 HUNTLEY was born 15 Oct 1755 in Lyme. His wife was Eunice CHURCH, born 8 Sep 1778, daughter of Titus CHURCH and Mary LOWELL. Bethuel and Eunice went to Marlow, Cheshire, NH with several other HUNTLEY families, and the 1790 US Census has them in Marlow, with a family of 4. They later settled in Gwillimsbury, near Newmarket, a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Bethuel had served in the American Revolution, and appeared on the muster roll of the Second NY Regiment, 29 Jun to 12 Sep 1775, before his future wife was born!

vi. Jemima HUNTLEY was born on 30 Aug 1758 in Lyme, and died 27 Jan 1849 in Marlow, age 90. She married on 11 May 1780 in Alstead, Cheshire, NH to Bethuel MILLER, born 19 Sep 1751 in Lyme, died 16 Nov 1821 in Marlow. Bethuel was a son of Nicodemus MILLER and Phebe HUNTLEY (see below) so Bethuel and Jemima were 1st cousins.

vi. Zenas 37 HUNTLEY was born 16 Jan 1759 in Lyme. He married on 14 Feb 1784 in Lyme, to Elizabeth PECK, born 24 Aug 1751 in Lyme. So he was 25 and she was 33 when they married. He appeared on the 1801 tax list for Sharon, Schoharie, NY. Zenas was sometimes spelled Zenus, and in one marriage record, he was called James.

3. Solomon HUNTLEY was born 1 Sep 1712 in Lyme, and died 11 Feb 1724 in Lyme, at age 11.

4. Deborah HUNTLEY was born 20 Aug 1714 in Lyme, and died 26 Mar 1807, in Lyme. She married on 29 May 1731 in Lyme, to Solomon GEE, who was born about 1698, in Devon, England, and died 13 Apr 1769, in Lyme.

Solomon GEE appeared in Lyme in 1731 when he married Deborah HUNTLEY. His journey from England to New England is the subject of speculation. He gradually acquired more property, which came to be known as the Pattaganset Farm, in Lyme. [SG]

Deborah (GEE) SMITH and Stephen GEE were both born about 1732, so they may have been twins.

Deborah GEE married Silas SMITH, who was a soldier in the French and Indian War, 1759, in the Third Company, Major & Captain John SLAPP, First Connecticut Regiment, Major-General, Colonel & Captain Phinehas LYMAN. Silas in buried in the Old Stone Church Burial Ground, in East Lyme.

Brother and sister William and Ruth GEE married sister and brother, Abigail and William MACK. Abigail and William were siblings of Zophar MACK, who married Hepzibah HUNTLEY, daughter of Samuel 13 and Ruth HUNTLEY.

5. Ruth HUNTLEY was born 1 Mar 1716 in Lyme, and died 15 Jun 1805. She married on 5 May 1736 in Lyme, to Samuel 13 HUNTLEY, who was born 23 Dec 1713 in Lyme, and died on 11 May 1770, in Lyme. They had 12 children, in Lyme. Samuel 13 was the son of John 4 HUNTLEY, so Ruth and Samuel 13 were 1st cousins. They were also my 5g-grandparents.

See the Samuel HUNTLEY page.

6. Stephen HUNTLEY was born 28 Feb 1719, in Lyme. He could be the Stephen HUNTLEY who married Phebe TUBBS on 2 Apr 1764 in Lyme.

7. Phebe HUNTLEY was born 1 Mar 1722 in Lyme, and died in 1797, Marlow, NH, age 74-5. She married on 13 Mar 1740, in Lyme, to Capt. Nicodemus MILLER, born 16 Feb 1715, in Lyme, and died 14 Jun 1781, in Marlow, NH, age 66. So they were 18 and 25 when they married. They are buried at the West End Cemetery, in Marlow. They had 7 children, in Lyme.

Nicodemus MILLER married (1) Patience BATES on 21 Feb 1736 in Lyme. Patience was born about 1720 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died 21 Aug 1738 in Lyme, They had one child, Joanna MILLER, born 13 Jul 1737 in Lyme. So Phebe HUNTLEY was his second wife.

Nicodemus MILLER and his family were among the earliest settlers in Marlow, coming from Lyme in the 1760s. He was chairman of the first town meetings, and also first storekeeper, known for keeping a good stock of rum. Marlow was 90 miles inland, with no real roads or bridges leading to it, but only bridle paths, sometimes widened enough for oxcarts. Nicodemus had been a merchant in Lyme, and brought his merchandise with him, which consisted mainly of "Rumbe and Melases" according to his account books.
