Dewey, Thomas Sr

Thomas DEWEY "The Settler" (1603 - 1648) and Frances (1610 - 1690)

my 9g-grandparents

Thomas DEWEY immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony before 1633, and settled in the Colony of Connecticut about 1639. He was probably born in England, and judging by the places where he chose to live, he was a Puritan Christian.

His marriage record (below) has his birth date as 1603. However, one Thomas DEWYE was baptized on 20 Dec 1606 in Hinton Martell, Dorset, England, son of Thomas DEWYE. See [DWR] for this record. If this is the right person, he was born no later than 20 Dec 1606, probably in or near Hinton Martell.

Thomas probably came to America with Winthrop's Fleet, before 1633. He was in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in Aug 1633, as he swore on 4 Aug 1635 that he had witnessed the will of John RUSSELL, on 26 Aug 1633.

He married Frances RANDALL on 22 Mar 1638/39 in Windsor, CT. Frances, born about 1610 according to the marriage record, was probably the widow of Joseph CLARK. Thomas died on 27 Apr 1648 in Windsor, CT. [DFH, p. 216] Frances married George PHELPS as her third husband.

"The statement has been made [e.g., NYGBR 6:63] that Thomas Dewey was from Sandwich, Kent, but this has no documentary foundation. Dewey was more likely from the West Country, as were so many of the other early settlers of Dorchester." [GM, Vol. 1, p. 539]

DEWEY Coat of Arms [DFH, p. 31]

"corona veniet delectis" is Latin for
"a crown will come to the worthy"

Simeon DE EWES was created Baronet of Stow Hall, about 1629, and was given this coat of arms. [DFH, p. 206]

The parents of Thomas DEWEY are unknown, but he is undoubtedly related to the DE EWES/DEWES family, which dates back to William the Conqueror, possibly of Dutch origin.

Thomas died intestate, but he had enough property to generate some documents related to its dispensation. In particular: "Syxe children, 4 boyes, 2 gerlls; one gerl Mary Clark 12 yeare old; one sone Thomas Dewye 8 yeare, Josiah Dewey 7 yeare old, Annah Dewey, 5 yeare old, Isreall Dewey 3 yeare old, Jydidiah Dewey 3 quarters of a yeare old." [DFH, p. 226]

Dorchester was founded in 1630, south of Boston, and was annexed to the city of Boston in 1870.

Thomas signed with his mark, and his surname is DUEE, DUCE and DEAWY in the Dorchester records.

It was Thomas DEWEY Jr, son of Thomas the Settler, who held the military rank of Cornet. See the Thomas DEWEY Jr page.

He does not appear among the first 24 freemen of Dorchester, but he was enrolled 14 May 1634, by taking the Oath of a Freeman. He was granted 8 acres of land in Dorchester on 1 Dec 1634.

Thomas left Dorchester in late 1635 or early 1636, after he sold his land to Richard JONES. He became one of the early settlers in what was to become Windsor, in the Connecticut Colony.

Statement dated 12 Aug 1635, Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony [DFH, p. 220]:

"I, Thomas Duee of Dorch; do … fully confirme vnto Richard Joanes of Dorch; and give him full possession of 4 acres of ground with my house and all thereto belonging, also 8 acres of ground of my great lott, also 10 acres of Medow on the side Napouset, and 4 acres of medow on the other, and 2 acres of medow in the Fresh Marsh."

"T. D. The mark of Thos. Duee."

The sale of land was followed by the Great Colonial Hurricane of 1635, which hit southeastern New England on the morning of 26 Aug 1635, and the Pequot War, from Jul 1636 to Sep 1638.

Thomas DEWEY may have been among the "Dorchester Men," led by Roger LUDLOW. The came to America on the ship Mary and John, in May 1630, part of Winthrop's Fleet, and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. LUDLOW became dissatisfied with the religious leadership in Boston, and obtained permission to found settlements in Windsor, Wethersfield and Hartford. Many of the Dorchester Men went to what is now called Windsor. They named it Dorchester, which it was called until 1650.

At any rate, Thomas was in Dorchester, MA on 22 Mar 1638/39, and in Dorchester (Windsor), CT when he was married.

Map of home lots in early Windsor, CT [DFH, p. 224]

The whereabouts of Thomas DEWEY between 12 Aug 1635 and 22 Mar 1638/39 are uncertain. He may have joined in the Pequot War. By the time his property was recorded on 28 Feb 1640 in Dorchester (Windsor) CT, he was owner of 5 small parcels of land, which would seem to indicate that he had been there a few years.

Frances CLARK or RANDALL

Thomas DEWEY married Frances on 22 Mar 1638/39 in Dorchester (Windsor), Colony of Connecticut. Frances died on 27 Sep 1690 in Westfield, MA, at age 75-80, so she was born about 1610-15.

There is some controversy as to the maiden name of Frances. She may have been a widow. Was she Frances RANDALL who married a CLARK, or the other way around? More discussion below.

Frances and Thomas had 5 children in Windsor. These 5 had many descendants, including some 500 soldiers in the American Civil War. [WED, p. 6] They also had descendants on both sides of the American Revolution.

I don't know how reliable these databases are. The marriage record on the left is the only source I have seen for the birthdate of Thomas DEWEY.

The marriage date is sometimes recorded as 22 Mar 1638, sometimes 22 Mar 1639. This may be due to double dating, where dates from 1 Jan to 25 Mar were dated the previous year, and the first day of the new year was 25 Mar. So the date should be 22 Mar 1638/39, or simply 22 Mar 1639 in the New System.

The documents related to Thomas DEWEY's estate named his 6 children (mentioned above). The 5 youngest had surname DEWEY. The eldest was Mary CLARK, age 12, thus born about 1836. Surely she must be a child of Frances by her 1st marriage, adopted by Thomas.

[Thomas DEWEY]

MARRIAGE: Windsor 22 March 1638/9 Frances (____) Clark [Grant 30]. She was a widow, but the name of her first husband is unknown, and she had one daughter with him, the Mary Clark in Dewey’s estate distribution [NYGBR 59:214-15]. She married (3) Windsor [2] November 1648 GEORGE PHELPS [Grant 56], and had three children with him.....

Many secondary sources identify Thomas Dewey’s wife as the widow of Joseph Clark of Windsor, but Clarence Almon Torrey demolished this claim in 1928, and demonstrated that the identity of the first husband of Frances (____) (Clark) (Dewey) Phelps remains unknown [NYGBR 59:214-15; TAG 35:151].

[GM, Vol. 1, p. 539]

Joseph CLARK/CLARKE

Some have claimed that Frances was the widow of Joseph CLARK, of Windsor. This claim appears in [DFH, p. 228] and elsewhere, but more recent research has cast doubt. She may have been a sister of Joseph CLARK, as suggested in [AWC, Vol. 2, p. 155], or perhaps the wife of another CLARK.

Some say that Joseph CLARK's wife died on 3 Apr 1639 in Windsor [GM, Vol 2, p. 84] and Joseph himself died 19 Apr 1641, so she was never his widow, if all that is true.

Joseph CLARK/CLARKE and his wife Frances had children, Joseph and Mary, both baptized on 30 Sep 1638 in Windsor.

Other researchers have suggested that the Frances CLARK who married Thomas DEWEY may have been Joseph's sister. At any rate, it seems doubtful that she was the widow of Joseph CLARK. Just in case, I'm keeping track of Joseph and his children.

"He [George Phelps] m. 2nd widow Frances Dewey, 16 Nov., 1648. He was her third husband. She m. for her 1st husband Joseph Clark. He was son of one of three brothers William, Thomas and George, but which one we do not know.

"Says 'Harris' these three brothers Clark were in Dorchester in 1640, where they died soon after, and nearly at the same time." [PFA, Vol. 2, p. 1260]

George PHELPS

Soon after Thomas died on 27 Apr 1648, Frances married George PHELPS, who had 3 sons from a previous marriage. George and Frances had 3 children. About 1667, George and Frances, and most of their grown children and families, removed to the settlement of Woronoco, later called Westfield, MA.

George PHELPS was born about 1606, in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. He came to America on the ship Mary & John, part of Winthrop's Fleet. George was single, but travelled with his elder brother William PHELPS, and his wife and children.

This was the same ship on which Joseph CLARK and probably Thomas DEWEY also immigrated. They sailed from Plymouth, England, on 20 Mar 1630, and landed at Nantasket, now Hull, on 30 May 1630. The Mary and John, with 400 tons burden, and about 140 passengers, was commanded by Capt. SQUAB. The passengers, mostly of the Rev. Mr. Warham's Church, were the 1st settlers of Dorchester, MA.

George PHELPS was married in 1637, Windsor, to Phillury RANDALL, who had also immigrated on the ship Mary & John in 1630, along with her father Philip RANDALL, and his father Goodman RANDALL. George and Phillury had 6 children, 3 of whom died in childhood. Their house in Windsor burned down in Oct 1640. Phillury died in Windsor, 29 Apr 1648.

Soon after Phillury died, George PHELPS married Frances, widow of Thomas DEWEY. The marriage record above calls her Frances RANDALL.

Descendants of Frances (CLARK) DEWEY

Frances had 8 known children, or 10 if you believe Joseph and Mary CLARK/CLARKE are hers.

Joseph CLARK Jr was born about 1636, since he was made Freeman on 20 May 1658 in Windsor, CT. He was baptized on 30 Sep 1638 in Windsor, and died 2 May 1659 in Windsor. His will, written Mar 1659 names sister Mary, age 21, as his next of kin.

Mary CLARK was baptized 30 Sep 1638 in Windsor, and died 28 Apr 1663. She married John STRONG Jr on 26 Nov 1656 in Windsor. [EJS, Vol. 1, pp. 19-21]

Mary was baptized on the same day as her brother Joseph, but he was probably a year or two older. She was named as one of Thomas DEWEY's children in his estate papers, so she must have been a daughter of Frances from a previous marriage, adopted by Thomas. She was Mary CLARK, age 12, so the 1st husband of Frances must have been a CLARK. Many have claimed it was Joseph CLARK, but this is disputed. See above.

John STRONG Jr was born about 1626 in England, the son of John STRONG Sr and his 1st wife, Margery DEANE. The STRONG and DEANE families also came to America on the Mary & John.

Mary died at age 24 or 25, leaving 2 small children. John STRONG Jr remarried, and had 4 more children. John STRONG Jr died in Windsor on 20 Feb 1697/98, age 72.

Thomas DEWEY Jr was born 16 Feb 1639/40 in Windsor, the first child of Thomas DEWEY Sr, and died 27 Apr 1690 in Westfield, Hampden, MA. He married on 1 Jun 1663 in Dorchester, Middlesex, MA, to Constant HAWES, born 17 Jul 1642 in Dorchester, MA, died 26 Apr 1703.

Thomas and Constant were my 8g-grandparents. See the Thomas DEWEY Jr page.

Josiah DEWEY was baptized on 10 Oct 1641 in Windsor, and died 07 Sep 1732. He married Hepsibah LYMAN, born about 1644, and died 04 Jun 1732.

Josiah and Hepsibah were the parents of 11 children, including 2 sets of twins. Their 5g-grandson was Admiral George DEWEY, the subject of the 1st part of [DFH].

Hepsibah LYMAN was the daughter of Richard LYMAN and Hepsibah FORD, of Windsor. Her ancestry is traced back to the 8th Century, including Charlemagne. [WED, p. 31]

LYMAN Coat of Arms [DFH, p. 33]

Along with most of the DEWEY/PHELPS extended family, Josiah removed from Windsor to Northampton, MA about 1660, where he learned the carpenter's trade, and on to Westfield in 1667 or 8, and to Lebanon, CT in 1695. It was in Northampton that Josiah and Hepsibah were married, and their first 3 children were probably born there. The other 8 children were probably all born in Westfield.

Josiah was one of the Seven Founders of the Westfield Church, organized 27 Aug 1679. He was ordained the first Deacon of the church on 28 Dec 1692. He was sergeant of the guard at Westfield during King Philip's War (1675-8). Hence he is known as both Deacon and Sergeant.

The actual settlement of this plantation of Lebanon began in 1695 and its increase appears to have been rapid. The Clarks, the Deweys, the Trumbulls, Tuppers and the Strongs were among the first settlers.

The inhabitants held a meeting in 1698, and the earliest record of the settlement of Lebanon was then made. Lebanon was organized as a town in 1700, under permission of the General Court of 1699, and was to have church and 'orthodoxe minister.'

Anna DEWEY was baptized 15 Oct 1643 in Windsor, and died 14 Jan 1707. She married on 18 May 1671 to John WOODWARD, born about 1647, died 5 Oct 1724, son of Henry and Elizabeth, of Dorchester.

Henry WOODWARD came to Dorchester, MA, in the summer of 1635, on the ship James, under Capt. TAYLOR. He was a physician, and moved his family to Northampton, MA, about 1658, and was there accidentally killed by a mill wheel, 7 Apr 1683.

Israel DEWEY was born 25 Sep 1645 in Windsor, and died 23 Oct 1678. He married on 20 Aug 1668 to Abigail DRAKE, born 28 Sep 1648, died before 17 Nov 1696.

Abigail DRAKE was a daughter of Sgt. Job DRAKE and Mary WOLCOTT.

Abigail joined Rev. Samuel Mather's church at Windsor, in 1686.

Israel went to Northampton, and later Westfield, with the DEWEY/PHELPS extended family, but returned to Windsor about 1675.

Israel DEWEY was a farmer at Northampton, when he was married. He was granted eight acres of land on the Fort Side (South street), at Westfield, 27 Aug 1668. About 1675 he returned to Windsor.
