Fisher, Jacob

Jacob FISHER (1801-1858) and Juliana Asia BOYD (1810-1870)

my 3g-grandparents

Jacob FISHER, my 3g-grandfather, was born about 1801 in Kentucky, and moved to Indiana by 1830. I have not found any records for him before 1830. There were many Jacob FISHERs!

A gravestone in Prickett Cemetery, Jalapa, Grant County, IN for Jacob R. FISHER has birth date 10 May 1800 and death 5 Feb 1857, age 56 y, 8 m, 26 d. [The gravestone in the photo is hard to read; I assume that the transcriber had a better look at it.] This matches the known details, so I tentatively accept these as the dates for our Jacob FISHER, and his middle initial, R. It is curious that the grave is in Grant County, not close to Martin or Lawrence Counties. The death date also makes sense, as our Jacob was not with the family in the 1860 Census, and no later record of him seems to exist.

However, [JBBC, p.27] says that Jacob died on 14 Dec 1858. But it also says that "he was thought to be an immigrant from Germany". There does seem to have been another Jacob FISHER in the area, who was born in Germany. There are many mistakes in the records.

[There was also a Jacob R. FISHER, born about 1804 in NC, lived in Huntington County, IN, but he married Amelia M. LANE on 4-5 Nov 1829 in Wayne, IN. He died 4 Mar 1883 in Polk, Huntington, IN. His wife was Catherine in the 1850 US Census.]

Juliana/Julia Asia BOYD, my 3g-grandmother, was born 27 May 1810 in Nicholas County, KY, the daughter of John BOYD Jr and Ann "Nancy" MARTIN. [JBBC] Her family moved from KY to IN in 1826. The BOYD ancestry can be traced back 2 more generations. See the John BOYD Jr page.

Southern Indiana, 1836

There was a David FISHER, who was granted land in Lawrence County, on 10 May 1828. He had 80 acres in the E half of the SE quarter of Section 24, in Township 5N, 2W, in Lawrence County. However, in his will, probated 10 Dec 1843, he named his son John FISHER, not Jacob. His wife was Mary Magdalene, and daughters Catherine, Sarah and Mary Magdalene. So I don't think he was the father of our Jacob.

When did Jacob come to IN, and was he alone? Did the FISHER and BOYD families know each other in KY?

The 1830 US Census for IN had at least 9 households under the name Jacob FISHER. The two most promising were in Wayne County, east of central IN, on the border with OH.

Jacob and Juliana were married in Lawrence County, IN on 6 or 8 Oct 1830. Nothing seems to be known about Jacob FISHER before this date, except that he was born about 1801, actually 10 May 1800 if the gravestone above is the right one, in KY.

On 1 Aug 1837, a Jacob FISHER bought 80 acres in Lawrence County, Indiana. This was in Section 28 of Twp-Rng 6N-1E, about 3 miles northeast of Bedford. (Click the box that says "Show land description on map".)

The 1840 US Census for Martin County also has a Jacob FISHER, probably the same one. Listed immediately after Jacob is David FISHER. I think Jacob and David were brothers. [Comments in brackets are mine]:

In 1850, the family had grown considerably. They had been having a child about every 2 years, and had 10 in 1850.  There were 3 boys under 5 in 1840, and only 2 boys between 10 and 15 in 1850. One of the boys must have died in between.

The head of household is Jacob FISHER, a farmer with real estate valued at $800. Jacob's age must be wrong - it looks like 9 on the page, but he can't be a 9-year-old farmer and head-of-household. I think he was 49.

Clipping from the 1850 Census, showing Jacob FISHER, age 9.

The 1850 US Census has 108 families, with 670 individuals, in Baker Township. There were 20 people named FISHER, in 2 families. The Jacob FISHER family of 12 is shown above. The David FISHER family of 8 was listed nearby.

On 1 Sep 1852, one Jacob FISHER purchased 3 parcels of land in Section 8, Rutherford Township (1N/4W), Martin County, IN.

Jacob FISHER died in 1857 or 8 in Martin, IN. [JBBC, p. 27] His widow Juliana and son Elijah appear in the 1860 Census, still in Baker Township.

The copy of this page from the 1860 Census on Ancestry.com is barely legible, so the information is suspect. I doubt that Merna J is a male, and Julian must be Juliana, living with her son Elijah FISHER and his family.

Counties (blue font) in Indiana, showing townships (black font).

The current map above shows the location of Daviess, Martin and Lawrence  counties in southwestern Indiana. In Martin County, the northern part of Mitcheltree Township used to be called Baker Township. It was the home of a large FISHER family in 1850.

FISHER families in the 1870 US Census for Baker, Martin, IN

The 1870 Census has several FISHER families in Baker Township, listed consecutively or close, so they probably lived close together, and must be related. This provides several clues about family relationships.

Elisha FISHER (39) was head of family 147. His wife was Mary C (27) and children Amanda E (12), William G (4), Wickliff D (2) and Joseph A (6/12). The birth of Joseph A was explicitly given as Dec 1869. The eldest child present, Amanda E, was a daughter of Elisha and his first wife. See the section on Elisha, below.

Nearby, family 149 was Jacob A FISHER (43) and Perlitha A (33). I believe he was a nephew of Jacob the subject of this page. Jacob A was born about 1827, in IN.

Next, family 150 was Elias FISHER (37), Alaertta G (35), Thomas J (15), Sarah M (10), Mary J (8), Nancy A (5), Mary E (3), and Fany E (1). Elias was probably Elijah, the younger brother of Elisha. See the section below. Elijah and Agnietta (spelled various ways) also appeared with his mother, Julian(a), in the 1860 Census, above.

Family 159 was Nathan FISHER (31), Elizabeth (37), Margaret (13), Manda A (11), James A (9), and John William (6/12). Nathan was another son of Jacob and Juliana.

Migration

Jacob and Juliana were both born in KY. Juliana came to Lawrence County, IN with her parents and siblings in 1826, and Jacob was there by 1830, as they were married 6 Oct 1830 in Bedford, Lawrence County. Jacob bought land near Bedford, on 1 Aug 1837.

The 1840 US Census finds them in neighboring Martin County, IN, and in 1850 they were in Baker Township, Martin County. On 1 Sep 1852, Jacob bought land in Martin, this time in Rutherford Township. I don't know if the family ever lived there. Most of the children seem to have been born in Martin, probably in Baker Township, and most were still in Baker in 1860 and 1870. (Baker later became the northern part of Mitcheltree Township.)

Children of Jacob FISHER and Juliana Asia BOYD

Jacob and Juliana had 11 children. A main resource is [JBBC], which lists the 11 children on p. 27, and has a chapter for each of their families, except Nancy and Noah, on pp. 303-324. This book seems very authoritative, but has a few mistakes, and I use its data as a starting point, trying to verify the details.

Jacob died shortly before the American Civil War, and 3 of his sons were killed in the war.

The sections below will cover families of the children of Jacob and Juliana (BOYD) FISHER.

1. Elisha Boyd FISHER was born about 1832 in Indiana, the son of Jacob and Juliana. He appears with the family in the 1850 Census, above, in Baker Township.

There was another Elisha FISHER. This has caused some confusion - at least for me! I will have to keep track of both, in order to separate them. The second one appears in Lawrence County, next to Martin County, in 1850.

The second Elisha FISHER was born about 1831, in Indiana. He may have been an orphan, living with the Noah KERN family. There were 2 other FISHERs, nearby in the census, staying with other families: Elizabeth FISHER was with family 835, with head Peter H. SEARS, and Louisa FISHER was with family 833, with head Abraham K. ADAMSON. I am guessing that Elisha (19), Louisa (18) and Elizabeth (12) were sibling orphans, taken in by neighbors.

There is a death certificate for an Elisha B. FISHER, born 12 Aug 1831 in Indiana, died 28 Jan 1916 in Indian Creek, Lawrence, IN. His parents were Jacob FISHER and Mary C. ROBERTS, both born in Lawrence County, Indiana. I think this is the second Elisha FISHER, although his father was also named Jacob FISHER, because the mother's name is different, and both parents were born in Indiana.

On the other hand, two gravestones in the Silverville First Baptist Church Cemetery, in Silverville, Indian Creek, Lawrence, IN read:

 E. B. FISHER
BORN
AUG 12, 1831
DIED
JAN 26, 1916

MARY ?
WIFE OF
E. B. FIS??
DIED
JULY 18, 18??AGED 54 Y?

This is clearly the same person as in the death certificate. The poster on Findagrave has transcribed the wife's death date as July 18, 1895, and her age at death was 54, so she was born between 18 Jul 1840 and 17 Jul 1841.

In 1860, we find an Elisha FISHER in Martin County. I think this is the first Jacob, since he is still in Baker, Martin, and he is 28 instead of 29. He has a wife Mary (19) and daughter Manda E (2). Obviously Phebe J is not the daughter of Elisha and Mary, but the sister of Elisha, who appeared as Phebe P FISHER with the family in the 1850 census (above). This is further evidence that this is the right Elisha. The mother and brother of Elisha and Phebe are nearby in the 1860 census, family 853 (above).

The following marriage record could be for our Elisha FISHER.

Indiana, Marriages, 1810-2001
Name: Elisha Fisher
Gender: Male
Event Type: Marriage Registration (Marriage)
Marriage Licence Date: 24 Nov 1858
Marriage Licence Place: Indiana, United States
Spouse: Mary Baker
Page: 648
FHL Film Number: 000476758

In the 1870 US Census, Elisha and Mary are still in Baker Township. Elisha owned real estate valued at $3,000 and personal estate $500. Mary was able to read but unable to write.

Wives of Elisha Boyd FISHER

In [JBBC, p. 303] we read that Elisha Boyd FISHER, the son of Jacob FISHER and Juliana Asia BOYD, had 3 wives. He married (1) on 28 Nov 1858 Leanna J. MITCHELL, b. about 1839 in Lawrence, IN, (2) about 1900 Mary Chilton BAKER, and (3) Polly H. CRAIG, b. 1839. Also, the children of Elisha FISHER, born 1858-1882, were from Mary Chilton BAKER, which doesn't see reasonable if Elisha and Mary were married about 1900. Clearly the marriages of Mary BAKER and Leanna J. MITCHELL are conflated.

After much research, I think the correct order is this. Elisha married (1) Leanna J. MITCHELL on 26 Feb 1852, in Martin, IN. They had 1 child, on 1 Jan 1858, and Leanna died 5 months after giving birth. Elisha married (2) Mary Chilton BAKER on 28 Nov 1858 in Lawrence, IN. They had 5 children. Late in life, Elisha married (3) Mary Hubbard "Polly" (CRAIG) HACKLER on 22 Nov 1900 in Lawrence County.

Mary Chilton BAKER has a gravestone in Silverville First Baptist Church Cemetery, Silverville, Lawrence, IN. From the stone, it looks like she died 18 Jul 18?? at age 54. From the census records, she was born about 1841-3 in IN.

Leanna MITCHELL/MITCHEL was known by many names: Leanna, Leaner, Jane, Ellen. Her name was spelled Leaner on her gravestone, in Dog Trot Cemetery, Martin County, IN. But I believe that Elisha only married one MITCHELL. They were married less than 7 years. The gravestone has birthdate 9 Dec 183? with the last digit transcribed as 0 on Findagrave. The 1830 date makes more sense than 1839 since she was married in 1852. The death date is 1? Jun 1858 and the transcriber has 1 Jun 1858.

Mary Hubbard "Polly" CRAIG was born 6 Dec 1838 in Lawrence, and died 9 Jan 1914 in Lawrence. She was the widow of William Boyd HACKLER when she married Elisha. Both of her husbands had the middle name Boyd.

Children of Elisha Boyd FISHER

Here is a summary of the children of Elisha Boyd FISHER, that I have found, citing evidence that our Elisha is their father.

i. Amanda Ellen SEARS b: 1 Jan 1858 in IN, d: 25 Mar 1937 in Bedford, parents Elisha FISHER and Ellen MITCHELL. This comes from her death certificate. Amanda also provides the proof that Mary and Ellen were both wives of the same Elisha B. FISHER, since she appears as Manda E. FISHER (2) in the household of Elisha and Mary, 1860 US Census, above.

ii. William G. FISHER b: 1866 in IN. The only evidence for William is that he appears at age 4 in the 1870 US Census, in the household of Elisha and Mary, in Baker, Martin, IN.

iii. Wickleff Doden FISHER b: 27 Feb 1868, Mountain Spr, IN, parents Elisha B FISHER and Mary BAKER. (I don't know where "Mountain Spr" is, but this comes from his SSACI file.) His death certificate names his parents as Elijah FISHER and Mary BAKER, but I think Elisha is correct. He appears in the household of Elisha and Mary in the 1870 US Census, above.

iv. Joseph Alonzo FISHER b: 4 Apr 1870 in IN, d: 20 Mar 1929 in Owen, Jackson, IN, parents Elisha FISHER and Mary BAKER. This information comes from his death certificate. He appears as Joseph A FISHER, an infant in the household of Elisha and Mary in the 1870 US Census, above, although his birth date in the census is Dec 1869.

v. Elmer Alexander FISHER b: 9 Aug 1875 in IN, parents Elisha FISHER and Mary BAKER. This comes from his death certificate.

vi. Clara Fisher WAGNER b: 14 Aug 1882, b. IN, d. 11 Jun 1935 in Silverville, Lawrence, IN, parents Elijah FISHER and Mary BAKER. This comes from her death certificate.

2. Elijah FISHER was born 13 Oct 1832 in IN, and died 7 Feb 1923, in Mitcheltree Township, Martin, IN, at the age of 90. His parents were Jacob FISHER and Julia BOYD, both born in IN. This is according to his death certificate. (Many other records indicate that Jacob and Juliana were both born in KY, so I think this is a mistake on the death certificate.)

Elijah FISHER married Amasetta "Emma" MITCHELL, on 6 Jun 1853 in Martin County.

Amasetta Emeline MITCHELL was born 27 Mar 1835 in Lawrence County, and died 26 Dec 1894 in Lawrence County, age 59. Elijah and Emma had 8 children.

Elijah appeared with his wife, called Agnietta, their 3 small children, and his mother, Juliana (BOYD) FISHER, in the 1860 Census (above).

After Emma died in 1894, Elijah FISHER married on 12 Apr 1896 in Lawrence County, to Amanda Elizabeth (SELLARS) KERN, widow of John Simeon KERN. Amanda was born 23 May 1830 in Lawrence County, and died 8 Feb 1907 in Silverville, Lawrence County, age 76.

Amanda Elizabeth (SELLERS) FISHER and Amasetta Emeline (MITCHELL) FISHER are easily conflated.

Brothers Elijah and Elisha FISHER were enumerated in a list of men "subject to do military duty" in June 1863.

U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865
Name  Elijah Fisher
Side  Union
Regiment State/Origin  Indiana
Regiment  13th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery
Rank In  Private
Rank Out  Private
Film Number  M540 roll 24
Other Records  13th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery

In 1870, Elijah and family are again in Baker Township. He is called Elias, but this is surely the same family. They are listed next to Jacob A. FISHER and (presumably) his wife, Perlitha A. FISHER. Since the families of Elijah (Elias) and Jacob are consecutive in the census, they probably live close together, and it is possible that they are brothers. If so, Jacob was 23 and on his own when the 1850 Census was taken. It would make sense that Jacob Sr had a namesake.

In 1870, Elijah was a Farmer, and owner of a large farm. His wife, Alaretta G. FISHER, was born about 1835, in Indiana. Their eldest son, Merna J, was 5 years old in 1860, so he must be the one called Thomas J. The 2nd child, John W, was 3 in 1860, and he is missing. The 3rd child was Sarah M, age 6 months in 1860, so she was born in Jan 1860, is said to be 10 in 1870. The next 4 children were born between 1860 and 1870.

Children of Elijah and Amasetta:

Thomas J. FISHER, age 25, was briefly admitted to the Lawrence County Asylum, from 30 Mar 1883 to 22 Jun 1883. His gravestone indicate that he was born in 1855 and died in 1936. His wife was Nancy C, born 1855 and died 1935.

Thomas J. FISHER b: 7 Feb 1855 in IN, d: 17 Sep 1936 in Loogootee, Martin, IN, parents Elijah FISHER and Everetta MITCHELL. This is all based on his death certificate. Other records indicate that his middle name was Jefferson, although he was probably the one called Jacob FISHER (43), with wife Perlitha (33), in the 1870 US Census. They appear near the families of brothers Elisha, Elijah and Nathan, in Baker, Martin, IN.

Mary Jane FISHER was born 13 April 1862, in Indiana, and died 16 Mar 1939, in the town of Williams, Lawrence County, Indiana, at age 76. She married Richard CLEMENTS. Her mother's maiden name was Amasetta MITCHELL. This is according to her death certificate.

Nancy A. FISHER was born 18 Mar 1865 in Martin County, Indiana. She married (1) CONDIFF, and (2) on 11 Sep 1911 to Thomas J. BRANNON, in Martin County, Indiana, his 4th marriage, and (3) John Spoonmore. This information comes from a marriage certificate and death certificate. The former says her mother was Aneesetta MITCHELL and the latter says Emma MITCHELL. Nancy died on 10 Apr 1939 in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana, at age 74, of breast cancer.

Fannie Ellen FISHER married Ira Lark FIELDS, son of William FIELDS and Margar et Ann LANTER. Fannie was born on 8 Sep 1869 in Indiana, and died 31 Oct 1933 in the town of Williams, Lawrence County, Indiana, at age 64. Her death certificate also names her parents as Jacob FISHER and Amesetta MITCHELL.

Martha Ennis FISHER was born 23 Jun 1878 and died 24 May 1940. Her gravestone is in Woodlawn Cemetery, Poplar Bluff, MO.

3. Nancy FISHER was born about 1835, in Martin County. She married on 6 Mar 1852 in Martin, to Joseph RUDYARD/REDYARD, born about 1812 in SC. So Joseph was 39 or 40 and Nancy was 17 when they married.

Nancy is named in [JBBC, p. 27] as a child of Jacob and Juliana, but no more information is given. She appeared with her parents and siblings in the 1850 US Census (above), in Baker, Martin, IN. She was 15, born about 1835, in IN.

Joseph RUDYARD was previously married, to Catherine FISHER (no known relation).

The 1840 US Census has Joseph and his wife, with a boy and a girl, both under 5, in Martin County. The 1850 US Census has Joseph and Catharine, with 6 children, in Baker, Martin, IN.

I don't know what happened to Catharine. After Joseph married Nancy, they probably moved away.

4. David A. FISHER was born about 1837, in Indiana, and died on 3 Oct 1862 in Danville, KY, age 25. He married Sarah A. KELLER on 29 Jan 1857 in Martin County, Indiana. David and Sarah were my 2g-grandparents. See the David FISHER page.

The second states that he was a Private in Company C, 97th Regiment, which had men from Dover Hill and Mountain Springs, of Martin County, IN. Thomas Gee Seeks Legal Separation From Haretta Gee.

CLAIMS BEEN BADLY MISTREATED

Thomas F. Gee has by his attorney, J. L. Smith, filed a suit for divorce from Haretta Gee. According to the complaint the couple were married in Martin County Feb. 14, 1898, and separated Feb. 16, 1909. He alleges in the complaint that his wife was endowed with a violent temper, and that she abused and cursed him until he was finally compelled to leave home. She also continually accused him of adultery with other women.

Mrs. Gee and Vonda, a 9-year-old daughter, reside in Greene county. The plaintiff sues for divorce and all proper relief.

9. Pheba Jane FISHER was born Aug 1847 in Martin County. She appears as Phebe P. FISHER in the 1850 Census with her parents and siblings in Baker Township, and in the 1860 Census she is Phebe J. FISHER, living with her brother Elisha and his family, still in Baker. At age 20, Phoebe married William H. BROWN, and they had 7 children, at least 4 of whom died in childhood.

In 1870 William H. BROWN was a poor farmer in McCameron Township, Martin County, IN. He lived with his wife Pheba, their 1st child, and his mother, Mary BROWN. Pheba could not read or write, and Mary could read but not write.

By 1880, William and Pheba had 5 children, still in McCameron. Pheba was still unable to read or write. George and Malinda had attended school in the past year. Mary, William's mother, was listed as insane, and able to read, but not able to write.

William H. BROWN died in 1882, and is buried in Salem Cemetery, Martin County, IN. Pheba remarried, to James William ELLIS. They had one child, James William ELLIS Jr, on 10 Aug 1889, so they probably married between 1882 and 1889.

In 1900 Pheba is found with her 2nd husband, with their son James William, and James Sr's son and daughter, and Pheba's daughter, Rhoda. The census says that James and Pheba had been married 29 years, but this is a mistake. Pheba had had 5 children, all still living in 1900. James owns his house, free of mortgage, and is illiterate. Note that Mary ELLIS, daughter of James ELLIS and his first wife, married Alonzo ROACH (see the previous section) in 1901.

10. John Hezekiah FISHER was born on 7 Jan 1849, in Lawrence County, Indiana, and died 11 Jan 1941, in Worthington, Greene County, Indiana, at age 92. His wife, who preceded him in death, was Fannie INMAN, born Aug 1849 in Indiana. They were married 25 Mar 1869 in Martin County. The death certificate says his parents were Jacob FISHER and Sarah BOYD, and they were both born in North Carolina!

11. Amanda E. FISHER was the youngest child of Jacob and Juliana, born in Jun 1855, Lawrence, IN, She married Isaac William "Ike" ROACH, on 14 Apr 1878 in Lawrence. This is all according to [JBBC, p. 324].

Jacob and Juliana also had a granddaughter, Amanda Ellen FISHER, daughter of Elisha FISHER (above), but she was born in 1858. There may be some conflation.

Amanda's record on FindaGrave has birth 21 Jun 1855 and death 7 Feb 1926. These dates were entered without citation, and the stone has no dates. It only says:

ROACH
ISAAC | AMANDA | EDNA K | WILLIAM

which seems to imply that they had children Edna K and William. However, I think that Edna K was William's daughter. Edna Katherine FISHER was born on 7 Feb 1926, in Lawrence, the same day that Amanda died, at age 70. Edna K died on 30 Oct 1926, age 8 months.

I have not found Amanda's birth and death dates in official records. She was not with her mother in the 1860 US Census, and I haven't found her in the 1870 US Census.

The 1800 US Census has the couple in Perry Township, Lawrence. Their fathers' and mothers' birth places are incorrectly recorded.

By 1900 they had moved to Indian Creek Township, and had a son, William. Isaac had become an engineer, probably for a railroad, but I don't know what "stationary" means in this context. The census also confirms that Amanda was born in Jun 1855, in IN, and her parents were both born in KY. Amanda had had 1 child, still living. All were able to read, but Isaac was not able to write. He was owner of their home, not a farm, free of mortgage.

Isaac W. ROACH was born 20 May 1857 in IN, and died 18 Sep 1917 in Indian Creek, Lawrence, IN, age 60. His parents were John ROACH and Mary STEPHENSON, both born in TN.
