Peck, William

William PECK was possibly the father of Alice PECK, who married Balthasar DEWOLF.

Records from Lyme, CT show that the wife of Balthasar DEWOLF was named Alice. See [ES, Vol. 2, pp. 127-8]. That she was the daughter of William PECK is claimed in [AMP], which quotes [DDW], and I don't have access to the latter resource.

In fact, [AMP] claims that she was Alice Marrus PECK, b. 26 Feb 1620 in London, England, and married Balthasar DEWOLF in 1645. Furthermore, it is claimed that she was the daughter of William PECK, bapt. 29 Dec 1601, London, England, d. 5 Dec 1694, Lyme, CT (Age > 92 years) and Elizabeth Sarah HOLT, b. 1608, London, England, d. 5 Dec 1683, Lyme, CT (Age 75 years), m. 1622 in London, England.

This is stated without evidence, so it needs confirmation. There are two biographies of William PECK that are interesting in this regard.

William PECK biography

William Peck, immigrant ancestor, was born in the city of London, England, or its vicinity, in 1601, and married there, about 1622, Elizabeth ----. He sailed from London in the ship "Hector," with his wife and son Jeremiah, and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, June 26, 1637. It is probable that he came in the company of Governor Eaton, Rev. John Davenport and others, principally from London. He was one of the original proprietors of the New Haven colony, in 1638. and his autograph signature is affixed to the fundamental agreement or constitution, June 4, 1639. for the government of the infant colony. October 20, 1640, he was admitted a freeman. He was trustee, treasurer and general business agent of the Colony Collegiate School, established on the basis of the Hopkins fund. He was by occupation a merchant, and, from 1659 until his death, a deacon of the church in New Haven. His name usually appears on the records with the title of "Mr.," then a prefix of respect and distinction. His home lot and dwelling-house and shop were on Church street. His first wife, Elizabeth, died December 5, 1683, and he married (second) Sarah, widow of William Holt. He died October 4, 1694, and was interred in the old burying-ground now under the Center church. Children of first wife: Jeremiah, born in London, 1623, mentioned below; John, New Haven, 1638: Joseph, New Haven, January, 1641; Elizabeth, New Haven, April, 1643.

[CNY Vol. I, p. 136]

The biography above tells us that William PECK had 2 wives: Elizabeth, who bore all his children, and Sarah, widow of William HOLT, who he married very late in life. None of the 4 children are named Alice.

Jeremiah PECK, b. 1623 in London

John PECK, b. 1638 in New Haven

Joseph PECK, b. Jan 1641 in New Haven

Elizabeth PECK, b. Apr 1643 in New Haven

Based on the 15-year gap, we might suspect that only the first child was from the first wife. If Alice PECK was born in 1625, she was a younger sister of Jeremiah, also born in London.

However, [DP, p. 7] states definitely that "His son, Jeremiah, was his only child at the time of his emigration."

1. Jeremiah PECK was born about 1623 in London. See [HB, pp. 169-71].

2. John PECK was born about 1638 in New Haven, and died in 1724, age 86. He served in King Philip's War, which was fought in 1675-8. [FANL, p. 242] He is probably the John PECK who married Mary MOSS. [FANL, p. 255]

3. Joseph PECK was born in Jan 1641 in New Haven. He was married on 28 Nov 1672 in New Haven, to Sarah ALLING, daughter of Roger ALLING and Mary NASH. Sarah ALLING was baptized 12 Oct 1649 in New Haven, and died in 1743, at age 93 or 94. Sgt. Roger ALLING was the Treasurer of the New Haven Colony. [FANH, p. 17]

4. Elizabeth PECK was born in Apr 1643 in New Haven, the daughter of William and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth. She married Samuel ANDREWS, who was born about 1635, son of Sgt. William ANDREWS, and died on 6 Oct 1704. [FANH, p. 40]

5. Alice PECK
