Martin, John

John MARTIN (1766 - 1844) and Esther LANE (? - 1852)

my 4g-grandparents

Note: This John MARTIN lived and died in England. He is unrelated to the MARTINs on the paternal side of my tree, who immigrated to the US from Germany, where the name was spelled MERTEN.

1853 map of southwestern Lincolnshire, England [LM] (click for a larger image) For scale, the map covers about 28 miles by 18 miles. Places of interest: Hacconby (lower center) home of John MARTIN and William STURGES. Horbling (just above and right of center) home of Emanuel STURGES Sr. Hough-on-the-Hill (upper left) birthplace of Edward TWELL. Osbournby (upper center) home of TWELL families. Aswarby (upper center) birthplace of Jane GILBERT. Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth (lower left) home of Isaac NEWTON

Hacconby was a small village in the Bourne (or Bourn) district of Lincolnshire, England. Hacconby is sometimes spelled Haconby, and Bourne is often Bourn, although Bourn is also the name of a village and parish in Cambridgeshire. Lincolnshire is sometimes called Lincoln.

John MARTIN was baptized on 14 Dec 1766 in Hacconby, the son of James MARTIN and Ann BREWEN. He died in the first part of February, and his obituary was published on 16 Feb 1844, in the Lincoln Rutland and Stamford Mercury and in the Lincolnshire Chronicle. I don't have the text of the obituaries, but both give the date at death as 78, so he was born about 1766, the same year he was baptized. The 2nd obituary further specifies the death date as Feb 1844.

John MARTIN and Esther LANE were married on 3 Jun 1788 in Corby, a city about 25 miles southwest of Hacconby.

(I think the Corby shown in the map above is actually Corby Glen, about 6 miles west of Hacconby. But Corby is also the name of the district, so I'm not sure where John and Esther were married.)

Esther (LANE) MARTIN was born about 1771 in Lincolnshire, according to the 1841 Census (below). She died in 1852, in the Bourne district, probably in Hacconby. Combining these results, Esther was about 81 when she died, and outlived her husband by 8 years.

However, the National Burial Index has a record for the burial of Esther MARTIN, at St. Andrew in Hacconby, on 26 Aug 1852, at age 85, indicating that she was born in 1766-7. (Thanks to Martha El-Maguid for this.)

John and Esther lived in Hacconby, where they had 8 children, of whom 3 or 4 died in early childhood. Their youngest child, Elizabeth, was my 3g-grandmother. Some of her children emigrated to America.

In 1841, John and Esther were living with their son William, and his family. The birthdates calculated from age don't match up very well with other data.

In 1851, Esther was a widow, still living with her son William and family. William's wife was a charwoman, or chore woman.

John MARTIN was born during the Seven Years War (1756-1763), a global conflict in which a coalition of Britain and Prussia eventually prevailed over France, Russia, Spain and Sweden. He lived through the Industrial Revolution, the American and French Revolutions, and the Napoleonic Wars. The British Crown was in the hands of the Tudors, with George III reigning from 1760 to 1820, his son George IV from 1820 to 1830, his other son William IV from 1830 to 1837, and his granddaughter Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901.

There was another John and Esther MARTIN, who lived in Barton-upon-Humber, in northern Lincolnshire. It is easy to conflate the two families.

1. Ann MARTIN was christened on 28 Sep 1789 in Hacconby.

2. James MARTIN was christened on 17 Apr 1791 in Hacconby. He married Ann BRINKLY/BRINKLEY on 18 May 1819 in Dunsby, about 1 mile northeast of Hacconby. Ann BRINKLEY was christened 2 Sep 1787 in Dunsby, the daughter of William and Ann BRINKLEY. James and Ann lived in Dunsby and had at least 3 daughters.

In 1861, James MARTIN was a widower, living with 2 of his daughters, and a son-in-law. James was a grocer, his single daughter Mary MARTIN was a dressmaker, and his son-in-law Abraham BLACKWELL was a bricklayer and stone worker.

3. John MARTIN was christened on 27 Jan 1793 in Hacconby. He must have died by 1800, since his parents had another son named John.

4. Ann MARTIN was christened 26 Oct 1794 in Hacconby, and died on her 1st birthday (?) 26 Oct 1795 in Hacconby.

5. Mary MARTIN was christened on 16 Jan 1796 in Hacconby. She married John PULLING on 18 May 1819 in Hacconby. They lived in Morton village, about 1 mile southwest of Hacconby, where they had at least 5 children. Mary died on 7 May 1863 in Morton, age 67, and John died on 10 Apr 1867 in Morton, age 71.

John PULLING was an "Agricultural Labourer" in 1861. Ann PULLING was still single in 1861.

7. William MARTIN was born about 1801 in Hacconby, and died 5 Aug 1866 in Hacconby, age 65. He married on 7 Jun 1822 in Hacconby, to Jane STURGES, who was christened on 6 Oct 1800 in Horbling (about 6 miles north of Hacconby), and died in May 1873 in Hacconby.

William and his family lived with his parents in 1841, and with his mother in 1851, as shown in the census records, above. William was a farm laborer, and Jane was a charwoman.

Elizabeth and William were my 3g-grandparents. See the William STURGES page.
