Elisha ROOT (1703 - 1775) and Mary SCOTT (1709 - 1784)

my 6g-grandparents

Elisha ROOT was born on 28 Feb 1703, in Westfield, MA, the eldest of 13 children of John ROOT and Mary LEONARD. He died on 4 Feb 1775, almost 72 years of age.

Elisha married Mary SCOTT of Sunderland, MA on 22 Apr 1730. Mary was born on 23 Oct 1709, in Hatfield, Essex, MA, the daughter of Richard SCOTT and Elizabeth BELDING, and died on 15 Sep 1784, at age 74.

Elisha and Mary were my 6g-grandparents, and their youngest child, Lusannah "Lucy" ROOT was my 5g-grandmother. See the Sampson French Jr page.

There is one unusual detail in Elisha ROOT's ancestry. When his maternal grandfather died, his maternal grandfather married his paternal grandfather. This all took place before Elisha was born, and before his parents were married. So perhaps I should say that after Josiah LEONARD died in 1689, his wife Sarah married, as his second wife, Thomas ROOTE. Then Mary LEONARD, daughter of Sarah and Josiah, married John ROOT, son of Thomas ROOTE by his first wife. So John ROOT's step-mother was also his mother-in-law.

History and Geography

The Connecticut River runs southward, from its headwaters in Canada and northern New Hampshire. It forms most of the boundary between present-day Vermont and New Hampshire, and continues south through Massachusetts and Connecticut, emptying into Long Island Sound between Lyme and Saybrook, where it contributes 70% of the fresh water coming into the Sound.

The Connecticut River Valley was explored by the Dutch, starting in 1614, and first settled by the English in the 1630s. (For reference, the Mayflower landed at Plymouth in 1620.) The “Great River” provided western MA with a stronger physical (if not political) connection to CT than with eastern MA.

Westfield, MA was incorporated in 1669, part of Hampshire County. It became part of Hampden County in 1812.

Southwick, MA was formed from part of Westfield in 1770, not including the jog. It also became part of Hampden County in 1812.

The “Southwick jog” or “notch” is the part that juts into CT. It was claimed by MA in 1793, and the border dispute was settled in 1804, with the current boundaries established.

A major engineering project was the Hampshire and Hampden Canal, constructed in 1825-8, crossing from MA to CT at Southwick. The canal became obsolete with the construction of a railroad along nearly the same course in 1848.

Granby, MA was formed from the town of Hadley in 1768, in Hampshire County, and stayed in Hampshire County when Hampden County was formed.

Granby, CT was formed from Simsbury in 1786, in Hartford County. It included “the jog” until 1804.

Otis, MA was formed from the towns Loudon and Bethlehem in 1810, in Berkshire County.

Sandisfield, MA was incorporated in 1762, in Berkshire County.

For brevity, I will sometimes refer to Westfield, Southwick, Otis and Sandisfield without repeating the county and state.

1. Mary 2977 ROOT was born 29 Jul 1731, and died 1763, at age 31 or 32. She married HILL.

2. Jonathan 2978 ROOT was born 6 Apr 1733, and died 24 Nov 1752, at age 19.

3. Seth 2979 ROOT was born 26 Jan 1735, and died 18 Dec 1758, age 23.

4. Martha 2980 ROOT was born 22 Feb 1736, and died 10 Oct 1791, at age 55. She married on 4 Dec 1757 Ichabod LEE, born 1725/26 in Westfield. Ichabod LEE was a Loyalist to the Crown, during the American Revolution. See the Walter LEE page.

5. Sym 2981 ROOT was born 11 Jun 1738, and died 19 Dec 1759, at age 21.

6. Moses 2982 ROOT was born 1 Sep 1740 in Southwick, and is said to have died 1 Dec 1784 in Southwick, [JPR, p. 355] but this must be a mistake, as his youngest child was born in 1794. He married (1) 17 Jan 1765 to Lydia 2993 ROOT, and (2) on 3 Dec 1778 to Susanna NOBLE. Moses lived all his life in Southwick. He was the father of 4 children by his 1st wife, and 6 more by his 2nd wife.

Moses 2982 ROOT married his 1st cousin, Lydia 2993 ROOT, daughter of John 2862 ROOT and Ann LOOMIS.

Susanna NOBLE, 2nd wife of Moses 2982 ROOT, was the daughter of Thomas NOBLE and Susanna COLE. Thomas NOBLE was a tanner and shoemaker, in Westfield. [LMB, p. 197]

Seth ROOT 1836 newspaper article

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION.—Farmers, look out—take warning—and be careful to have your Hay well cured, before you put it into your barns.

Mr Seth Root, of Otis, in this State, lost fifteen tons of good hay, by putting it into his barn too green, not withstanding he had taken the precaution to give it a good sprinkling of salt.

For several days, Mr R. noticed his hay-mow to be gradually sinking at the centre, and was much perplexed to divine the cause—the last week having occasion to ascend it, to throw down some hay for his cattle—had taken off but a small quantity, when on a sudden stream of flame, smoke and cinders burst upon him, that well near suffocated him, at the same time his feet gave way he found himself ingulphed [sic] to his shoulders in smoke and embers, from which situation he fortunately very soon extricated himself, rather singed, and gave the alarm of fire; his neighbors by timely exertion, extinguished the fire and saved his barn. The hay was put into the barn, the fore part of August, when ignition took place, and why no indication of the fire was sooner discovered, is left to the decision of the learned and curious.—Hampden Whig.

10. Susannah 2986 ROOT was born 22 Aug 1750. Her gravestone in Southwick Cemetery says she died on 16 Dec 1825, at age 76, so one of these dates is incorrect. She married Isaac GILLET/GILLETT, whose gravestone is beside hers. It says he died 1 Jul 1804, age ?9. They were married on 6 Oct 1768, in Westfield, according to Massachusetts Town and Vital Records.

Isaac GILLET was a Private in the Revolutionary War, starting 8 Jul 1778, in Captain James STODDARD's Company, Second Regiment, Connecticut. Later, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, as he was know as Captain Isaac GILLET, which appears on his gravestone.

Isaac GILLET Jr and his wife Phebe were still living, with their son Henry, and his wife, also named Phebe. Henry was a farmer in Oswego County, NY, on the shore of Lake Ontario, in 1850.

Eunice GILLET, daughter of Isaac and Susannah, married Samuel MOORE. Eunice is not mentioned in [JPR], but [AM, pp. 46-7] has a wealth of information about this family. Eunice was baptized on 16 Nov 1769 in Westfield, and moved by wagon in 1806 to Mantua, Portage, OH, where she died on 10 Oct 1850, at age 80.

Mantua Township, in Portage County, northeastern Ohio, about 500 miles west of the Connecticut River. Mantua was first settled by Europeans in 1798, so the MOORE family was among the first.

In 1850 Almon and Cynthia were living next to their newlywed son, Seth, and his family. Almon and Seth both owned large farms. Eunice T. GILLETT may have been Seth's sister. Almon GILLET Sr was living with his son Harry (Henry) and family.

The 1850 US Census and 1855 MA State Census had many GILLETT families in Southwick.

11. Lusannah "Lucy" 2987 ROOT was born on 20 Sep 1752 in Southwick, and died 11 Sep 1829.
