Huntley, John 4

John 4 HUNTLEY (1677 - 1750) and Elizabeth PEARSON (1677 - ?)

my 6g-grandparents

John 4 HUNTLEY was born on 24 Nov 1677 in Lyme, Colony of Connecticut, the son of Aaron 3 HUNTLEY and Mary CHAMPION. He married Elizabeth PEARSON on 2 Feb 1699, in Lyme.

Elizabeth was born on 25 Apr 1677 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the daughter of Samuel PEARSON and Dorcas JOHNSON. Rowley is about 30 miles northeast of Boston, and 3 miles west of Plum Island Sound. (Not to be confused with Plum Island, in Long Island Sound, across from Lyme, CT!) See my page on Essex County.

Using the numbering system of [VH].

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/huntley-john-4/CT-New-London-County-Connecticut-1911-Map-Rand-McNally.jpg

1911 Map of New London County, CT. The town of Lyme has been divided into Lyme, Old Lyme and East Lyme. Four Mile River can be seen in East Lyme.

"John Huntley lived near Four Mile River in Lyme, presumably on the 44 acres which his father, Aaron deeded to him 22 Feb., 1702/3 consisting of both upland and meadow lying on both sides of the River, adjacent to the commons and Henry Champion’s land." [VH]

The death dates for John 4 and Elizabeth are in some doubt. From [VH], John 4 "died in Lyme before 10 April, 1750" and Elizabeth "survived her husband." I don't know what event on 10 Apr 1750 this is derived from.

Descendants

John 4 and Elizabeth had 11 children, all born in Lyme, from 1699 to 1721. All seem to have stayed in Lyme.

Brothers John 9 and Peter 10 HUNTLEY married sisters, Lydia and Sarah ROBBINS. Samuel 13 HUNTLEY married his 1st cousin, Ruth HUNTLEY.

1. John 9 HUNTLEY was born on 19 Oct 1699 in Lyme, CT, and died 25 May 1728, in Lyme, at age 28.

He married Lydia ROBBINS, in Lyme. She was born on 9 Oct 1703, in Lyme, the daughter of Joseph ROBBINS and Sarah WATERHOUSE, and died 22 Apr 1728, in Lyme, at age 24.

John 9 and Lydia had one child, Hezekiah HUNTLEY b. 13 Feb 1725, Lyme. So Hezekiah's parents both died when he was 3 years old. John 4 HUNTLEY was appointed guardian of his grandson on 22 Jul 1729.

The will of John 9 HUNTLEY was administrated by his father, John 4 HUNTLEY. The property was valued at £163 and consisted of a house, well and lot land, 42 acres and small orchard. It was sold to his brother, Joseph 11 Huntley.

Two entries in the Lyme record books refer to the ear mark used by Hezekiah HUNTLEY being the same as that used buy his father, John 9 HUNTLEY. One on 18 Jun 1731 shows that Hezekiah was living at that time, and another on 16 Sep 1746 refers to him as deceased. So Hezekiah HUNTLEY died some time between those dates. [VH, p. 77] (Maybe there is some mistake, as I don't know why a 6-year-old would be using an ear mark for cattle.)

2. Elizabeth HUNTLEY was born on 2 Jan 1702, in Lyme.

3. Mary HUNTLEY was born 20 Jun 1703 in Lyme. She married Joseph ALGER on 27 Apr 1732, in Lyme. Joseph ALGER was born on 1 Dec 1709, in Lyme. Church records show that he was still active 18 Nov 1753 in Lyme. Mary and Joseph stayed in Lyme, at least until 1753. I have no record of them after 1753. They had 4 known children. Not much is known about 3 of them.

4. Peter 10 HUNTLEY was born 4 Mar 1705 in Lyme, and died about 1783, in Lyme, at age 77 or 78. He married (1) Mary RANSOM on 7 Jan 1729 or 1 Mar 1729, in Colchester, CT, just a few miles north of Lyme. Mary RANSOM was born 13 May 1709, in Lyme, and died on 5 Jul 1732, Lyme, at age 23, possibly during childbirth, as her second child was born and died in 1732. Mary was the daughter of Joseph and Jane RANSOM. See [WCR, pp. 25-9].

Peter 10 HUNTLEY married (2) Sarah ROBBINS on 14 Feb 1733, in Lyme. Sarah ROBBINS was born 10 Mar 1709, Lyme and died about 1783, Lyme. Sarah was the sister of Lydia ROBBINS, who married Peter 10's brother, John 9. Peter had 2 children by his 1st wife, and 5 more by his 2nd.

Peter received a deed of gift from his father, on 28 Dec 1727, of some 24 acres of land below the falls on Four Mile River in Lyme.

+ Azuba MACK b. 28 Nov 1748 in Lyme, m: 31 Dec 1768 in Lyme, d. aft. 1812

Ezra 25 HUNTLEY married his 2nd cousin, Phebe ROBBINS, daughter of William ROBBINS and Esther HUNTLEY. Esther was the daughter of Aaron 5 HUNTLEY and Deborah DE WOLF. Aaron 5 was a brother of John 4. Ezra 25 and Phebe moved to Bangall, NY, about 10 miles west of the border with CT. Their 12 children were probably all born in Bangall. Phebe married (2) in Bangall, Dutchess, NY on 26 Oct 1783 to Nathan GREEN.

Jasper 26 HUNTLEY also married his 2nd cousin, Azuba MACK, daughter of Ebenezer MACK and Hannah HUNTLEY. Hannah was the sister of Esther HUNTLEY. So Azuba MACK and Phebe ROBBINS were 1st cousins. Jasper 26 and Azuba lived in Lyme, and had 5 children.

5. Joseph 11 HUNTLEY was born 27 Jan 1707 in Lyme, and died 13 Jun 1758, in Lyme, age 51.

He married (1) in New London, CT, to Ruth WILLIAMS, born in New London on 12 Sep 1712, and died in 1739, daughter of Thomas WILLIAMS and Sarah ROGERS. The marriage date is unknown, but their 1st child was born about 1729, when Ruth would have been 16 or 17, so they were probably married about 1728. Ruth died at age 26 or 27, leaving 4 young children.

Joseph 11 married (2) on 24 Oct 1741, Eunice WELCH, bapt. 22 April, 1725 in Preston, CT, daughter of John WELCH and Susanna EMMONS. After Joseph 11 died, Eunice married (2) Jacob SULLARD. In 1807 Eunice was again a widow, living in Lyme.

Joseph Huntley lived on land laid out to him on the “west side of the Fergoes”, but soon after the death of his first wife, he sold this land of forty acres to his brother, Samuel Oct. 6, 1742 and returned to Lyme. He had land by gift from his father and by purchase from his brother Samuel on Four Mile River adjacent to his brothers, Benjamin and John.

His will mentions his wife, Eunice, children John, Mary, Lucy and Elizabeth and her husband Ebenezer Chapman. Mentioned in the settlement of his estate 1768 were his daughters, Martha, Hannah wife of Lemuel Beckwith, Susannah wife of Stephen Ransom, and Abigail. His brother Samuel was appointed administrator of his estate. [IHH, p. 32]

Joseph lived in Lyme most of his life, but for a few years lived on the "west side of the Fergoes". I'm not sure where that was. It took 10 years to settle his estate.

Joseph 11 HUNTLEY had 4 children with his 1st wife, and 7 more with his 2nd wife.

John 27 HUNTLEY served in the French & Indian War, campaign of 1755, and in the later campaigns of 1758-9. He was in Capt. Joshua Abel's Co, 3rd Connecticut Regiment, and Capt. Jonathan Latimer's 5th Co, 3rd Connecticut Regiment, and Capt. Zebulon Butler's 9th Co, 4th Connecticut Regiment. John's wife, Lois BECKWITH, was a daughter of Mathew BECKWITH and Elisheba RAYNOR. John and Lois lived in the Charlotte Precinct, Dutchess County, NY (not to be confused with Charlotte, Chautauqua, NY).

Marcy/Mary HUNTLEY married (1) Timothy ROGERS, and possibly (2) ___ SMITH. Her children were Timothy ROGERS, born 22 May 1756, and his half-sister, Ruth SMITH, born about 1759. This is according to [VH, p. 79]. However, [IHH, p. 32] says Mary's husband was Cyrus LEE.

Lucy HUNTLEY married Rufus CHAPMAN, son of Peter CHAPMAN of Montville, CT. Lucy and Rufus had 8 children according to [VH, p. 79]. However, [IHH, p. 32] says "Lucy may have been a child of Ruth" and doesn't give the name of a husband or children.

Ebenezer CHAPMAN, husband of Elizabeth HUNTLEY, was a son of Robert and Bersheba CHAPMAN. Ebenezer and Elizabeth had 12 children, in Lyme.

The brother and daughter of Joseph 11 HUNTLEY married siblings. His brother, Peter 10 HUNTLEY (previous section) married Mary RANSOM, and his daughter, Susannah HUNTLEY, married Stephen RANSOM. See [WCR, pp. 25-9]. Mary and Stephen's parents were Joseph and Jane RANSOM.

Stephen RANSOM marched to the relief of Boston at the time of the Lexington alarm in 1775. Later, he was a Private in Col. HUNTINGTON's regiment, and was sick in hospital and discharged, 1776. Stephen's first wife was Lydia LORD. They lived in Hudson, Columbia, NY

Abigail HUNTLEY married Stephen RAY according to [IHH, p. 32] and according to [VH, p. 79] she married Stephen RAY of Amenia, Dutchess, NY on 12 Dec 1779. However, several other records indicate that Abigail HUNTLEY married Martin ABELL on 10 Dec 1779 in Lyme.

6. Benjamin 12 HUNTLEY was born 5 Feb 1710 in Lyme, and died 20 May 1737, in Lyme, at age 27. He married on 27 Apr 1732, in Lyme, to Lydia BECKWITH, born 16 Feb 1712, in Lyme, daughter of Joseph BECKWITH and Mary LEE. Benjamin 12 and Lydia only had 1 child.

i. Curtais HUNTLEY b. 5 May 1735 in Lyme, d. 4 Mar 1737, age 22 months.

After Benjamin 12 and Curtais died, Lydia married (2) on 30 Dec 1739 to John CROSSMAN son of Bartholomew CROSSMAN of New London, CT.

7. Lucy HUNTLEY was born 15 Dec 1711 in Lyme.

8. Samuel 13 HUNTLEY was born 23 Dec 1713 in Lyme, and died 11 May 1770 in Lyme, at age 56. He married on 5 May 1736 in Lyme, to Ruth HUNTLEY, his 1st cousin. Ruth HUNTLEY was born 1 Mar 1716 in Lyme, and died 15 Jun 1805 in Lyme, at age 89. Ruth was the daughter of Aaron 5 HUNTLEY and Deborah DE WOLF. Aaron 5 was a brother of John 4, father of Samuel 13.

The 12 children of Samuel 13 and Ruth:

xi. Hepzibah HUNTLEY b. 2 Jun 1756, Lyme, m. after Jan 1777 to Zopher MACK

xii. Solomon HUNTLEY b. 7 Jan 1761, d. After 1770

Samuel 30 HUNTLEY married his 2nd cousin, Susannah HUNTLEY, the daughter of David 16 HUNTLEY and Susannah BECKWITH. David 16 HUNTLEY was the son of David 6 HUNTLEY, a brother of John 4.

Aaron 31 HUNTLEY married his 3rd cousin, Rachel HUNTLEY, daughter of Benejah HUNTLEY No. 7 of the Moses HUNTLEY line (numbered separately). They had 7 children in Marlow, NH.

Hezeliah 32 HUNTLEY married his 3rd cousin, Hannah HUNTLEY, sister of Rachel HUNTLEY. They had 4 children in Lempster, NH. Apparently the children were removed from the home by the church, due to heresy. I don't know what heresy Hannah had committed.

Samuel 13 HUNTLEY and Ruth HUNTLEY were my 5g-grandparents. See the Samuel HUNTLEY page.

Hannah HUNTLEY's heresy

Lyme, Conn. First Baptist Church records: 1 Dec., 1787—“the church took up their watchcare over sister Hannah Huntley of Lempster, N. H. for embracing the awful sin of heresy and other evils—sent her a final letter of rejection by the hand of brother Jonathan Huntley.”

[VH, p. 106]

9. Lucy HUNTLEY was born on 22 Apr 1716 in Lyme, and died 31 Jan 1739 in Lyme, at age 22.

10. Sarah HUNTLEY was born on 17 Jun 1718 in Lyme, and probably died young.

11. Elizabeth HUNTLEY was born on 30 Sep 1721 in Lyme, and died 19 Jun 1737 in Lyme, at age 15.
