Stephen BELDING was born on 28 Dec 1658 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT, the son of Samuel BELDING and Mary WELLS. He died on 6 Oct 1720.

Mary WELLS was born on 8 Sep 1664, daughter of Thomas WELLS and Mary BEARDSLEY, and died about 1751.

Stephen BELDING and Mary WELLS were married on 16 Aug 1682 in Hatfield, Hampshire, MA. They lived in Hatfield, where at least the first 5 of their 9 children were born.

After her husband died, Mary at age 58 married Capt. Joseph FIELD, of Northfield, MA.

Stephen's father Samuel had moved the family from Wethersfield to Hatfield in 1661, when Stephen was about 3. Stephen BELDING appeared in Hatfield in the MA Census of 1679. He would have been about 21, and unmarried.

Stephen's mother, Mary, was "killed by Indians when they attacked Hatfield on 19 September, 1677. In this attack the Indians burned 7 houses; killed 12, wounded 4, and carried 17 inhabitants into captivity." [CCW, p. 6]

Jonathan BELDING "received a grant of 12 acres of land on condition of building a saw-mill at Northfield, in 1717." [CCW, p. 7]
