Richard HAWES was born on 2 Nov 1606 in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England, which is 30 miles northwest of downtown London. His parents were Richard HAWES (1580 - 1665) and Susan DEAN (1584 - 1609). [RHD, p. 18 ff]

Richard married Ann CLAPP about 1632 in Great Missenden. They were about 25 and 23, respectively.

Ann was born about 1609 in Dorchester, Dorset, England, some 100 miles southwest of London, just 5 miles north of the English Channel.

Richard and Ann had 2 children in Great Missenden. Their daughter Anna was baptized 17 Dec 1632, and their son Obadiah was baptized 25 Mar 1635. They were probably born shortly before those dates.

The family of 4 emigrated on the ship Truelove, leaving London on 19 Sep 1635, landing in Boston, with 66 passengers, under Capt. Mr. J. GIBBS. All the men onboard had taken the oath of allegiance and supremacy. [JCH, p. 131]

They settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, where Richard and Ann were listed as church members in a document dated 23 Sep 1636.

Dorchester, named after the city of the same name in England, was south of Boston, and was annexed to Boston in 1870. It was founded in 1630, just 10 years after the 1st voyage of the Mayflower, and was in Suffolk County, formed in 1643, and then was part of Norfolk County, formed in 1793, and went back to Suffolk in 1870.

That Ann's maiden name was CLAPP or CLAP is inferred from the close relationship between the HAWES family and Roger CLAP, whose will mentions "his cousins (meaning nephews or nieces), Thomas Swift, Esther Bissell, and our Constant (Hawes) Dewey." [RHD, p. 22]

Richard HAWES probably died in Dec 1656, as his estate was inventoried shortly thereafter. His wife Ann must have died or remarried by 1662.
