Trader John CHRISTIE (1764 - ?) and Hikatiyah "Oni" (1766 - ?)

my 6g-grandparents

John "Trader John" CHRISTIE was born about 1764, probably in or near the Dutch Republic, since he is referred to as a Dutchman. His wife was a Cherokee Indian, born about 1766, called Hikatiyah "Oni". They lived in Turtletown, in the Old Cherokee Nation. [DAM, pp. 23-4]

This 1862 map shows the southeastern corner of TN on the left, the southwestern corner of NC on the right, and part of northern GA on the bottom. Turtletown is near the Hiwassee River, just upstream from the TN/NC border. The Valley River (shown but not named in this map) flows southwest, and empties into the Hiwassee at Murphy, NC. For scale, the distance between Turtletown and Murphy is about 20 miles. [source]

John and Oni had 7 children of record, probably all in Turtletown. Many of their children and grandchildren were forced to move west, some traveling as part of the infamous Trail of Tears, of 1838-9. Little seems to be known about John and Oni after about 1796.

Some researchers have claimed that John was born in Ireland, citing a US Army enlistment record. This page has records of 3 soldiers named John CHRISTIE. No. 2645 is a Private John CHRISTIE, who enlisted in the 22nd US Infantry, for a 5-year term. He was enlisted by Capt. Pentland on 15 Aug 1812, in Pittsburg, at age 45, so he was born about 1767. He was a collier by trade, born in Ireland, with blue eyes, black hair, dark complexion, height 5'9''. He served in Capt. D. McFarland’s company, and died at Fort Niagara, of inflammation of the lungs, on 7 Dec 1812.

It seems doubtful that this is the right John CHRISTIE. We have no other indication that Trader John was born in Ireland, or that he was a collier, or that he was in the US Army, or that he died in 1812, or ever went to Pittsburg or Fort Niagara.

Also, several researchers have the wife of Trader John as Ollie BEANSTICK. However, that is the name of the wife of Watt CHRISTIE. Also, it is said that Trader John had the nickname "Bald".

The tree in [DAM, p. xvi] has death dates of 1833 and 1835 for Jack and John, but they are found in the Drennen Roll of 1851, so they made their way to Cherokee Nation West, in what was later called Oklahoma.

Cherokee Nation West was established in the northeast corner of Indian Territory (I. T.), later part of Oklahoma. The map is the frontispiece of [DR]. Click the map for a larger image.

The Cherokee Nation, or Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is often called Cherokee Nation West, to distinguish it from Cherokee Nation East, or Old Cherokee Nation.

The Cherokee Rolls were censuses taken from 1811 to 1924, covering various parts of the widespread Cherokee population. Of particular importance was the Drennen Roll, taken in 1851-2. This was supposed to include only Cherokee Indians who had come west in the Trail of Tears. It was later used to establish Cherokee citizenship, which conferred eligibility to receive payments from the US government, as outlined in the Treaty of 1838. The roll consisted of first and last names of all individuals, in family groups, listed by district.

1. Edward "Ned" CHRISTIE was born about 1785 in Old Cherokee Nation, and died about 1848, perhaps in the Cherokee Nation West. His wife was Sallie PEAK, born about 1790 in Old Cherokee Nation, died about 1858 in Cherokee Nation West. Edward and Sallie were my 5g-grandparents. See the Ned CHRISTIE page.

2. Tsa-Ki "Jack" CHRISTIE was born about 1787 in Old Cherokee Nation. His wife was Taki TUKEY, married about 1805 in Old Cherokee Nation. [DAM, p. xvi]

The family appears as Group 603 in the Drennen Roll of 1851, in Flint District, Cherokee Nation. The family consisted of: Jack Christie (3926), Ta-kee, Two-ker, Harry, Scott. Of course Ta-kee must be Jack's wife Taki, and they have 3 children, or possibly other family members.

3. John CHRISTIE was born about 1789 in Old Cherokee Nation. His wife was Kentake. They appeared in the Drennen Roll of 1851, in Delaware District. Family Group 894 has: John Christy, Ken-ta-ke, Jack Christy, Esty Christy.

4. Ar-che-sar "Arch" CHRISTIE was born about 1789 in Old Cherokee Nation. His wife was Kahoga. They also appeared in the Delaware District, in the Drennen Roll of 1851. Family Group 847 has: Arch Christy (2953), Ka-go-gah, Qua-ty, Sally, Ah-dah-wos-ke, Gaw-dah-gwas-ke (2953), Nelly.

5. Katie CHRISTIE was born about 1793 in Old Cherokee Nation.

6. George CHRISTIE was born about 1795 in Old Cherokee Nation.

7. Qua-tse "Betsy" CHRISTIE was born about 1796 in Old Cherokee Nation, and died about 1839, on the Trail of Tears. Her husband was Wakigu "Lacy" DALASINI, married about 1816, in Old Cherokee Nation. [DAM, xvi] Lacy was still living in 1851, in Cherokee Nation West.

More is known about this branch, because Betsy and Lacy were the grandparents of the famous outlaw, Ned CHRISTIE, not to be confused with Betsy's brother, Edward "Ned" CHRISTIE.

Wakigu "Lacy" DALASINI was the son of Tsatsi DALASINI, of Turtletown. Lacy and Betsy had 12 children, who took their mother's name, CHRISTIE, as was often done among the Cherokee. The family was forced to move west, as part of the Trail of Tears in 1838-9, and Betsy died on the journey. Lacy and several of the children survived, and are found on the Drennen Roll of 1851, in the new Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma.

From the Drennen Roll of 1851, in Going Snake District, there are 3 family groups in this line. (Numbers in parentheses are tribe membership numbers.)

Group 563: Lacy Christy, George, Nancy, Charlotte, Cah-se-quah-la-ske. These are the names of Lacy and his 4 youngest children.

Group 564: Arch’d Christy (1828), Caty Christy, Quaty. This must be Arch, son of Betsy and Lacy, and his wife Katie, and daughter Quaty or Betsy.

Group 576: Ah-ly Christy (3147), Chu-wo-ne (3147). This could be Arley, son of Betsy and Lacy, and his wife

Oonetsitsagitsi.

The Drennen Roll of 1851 has, in Flint District, Group 283: Wat Christie (2234-4849?), Charlotte, Jim, William, Rachel (2234), Ska-ya-he-tah.

Watt CHRISTIE, eldest son of Betsy and Lacy, born in Aug 1817, appeared in the Cherokee Census of 1883. Annie and Jennie are his youngest children. Turn could be his son, usually called Goback. Peggy may be his daughter-in-law, 2nd wife of Ned. In that case Arley is probably James, son of Ned and Peggy. I don't know how the other children fit in.

Watt CHRISTIE enrolled his granddaughter, Rachel CHRISTIE, in the Cherokee Nation in 1900. The papers that have been preserved in this matter have shown some of the family structure. On 18 Dec 1900 Watt said he was 84 or 85. He lived with his granddaughter Rachel, in Tahlequah District, P.O. in Wauhillauh. Rachel's parents were Watt's son Ball CHRISTIE and Ollie (or Bettie) BEANSTICK. Rachel was 7 or 8, so born 1892-3. Ollie was still living in 1900, age about 30, so born about 1870. Ollie just "floated away" and Watt didn't know where she was. Ball CHRISTIE was born about 1871, son of Watt CHRISTIE and his 3rd wife, Ake "Aggie" DICK, and died about 1895, at age 24.
