Jewett, Joseph

Capt. Joseph JEWETT Jr (1656 - 1694) and Ruth WOOD (1662 - 1734)

my 8g-grandparents

Joseph JEWETT Jr was born 1 Feb 1656 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His parents were Joseph JEWETT Sr, and his second wife, Ann, Joseph Sr had emigrated from Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England in 1638, with his first wife and child, and his older brother Maximilian. They settled in Rowley, about 20 miles north of Boston.

Joseph JEWETT Sr died, and was buried on 26 Feb 1660, when Joseph Jr had just turned 4 years old, and Joseph Jr came under the guardianship of his uncle, Maximilian JEWETT.

Ruth WOOD was born 21 Jul 1662 in Rowley, daughter of Thomas WOOD and Ann HUNT.

Joseph was called a carpenter in the Rowley records, and later a merchant. Toward the end of his short life he was known as Captain. He was a soldier in Capt. Samuel BROCKLEBANK’s Co., in King Philip’s War (1675 - 1678), and one of the few survivors of the Sudbury Massacre, having been stationed at Marlboro at that time. [GBB, pp. 189-90]

Joseph and Ruth were married on 16 Jan 1680/81 in Rowley. He was 24, already a military veteran, and she was 18. They lived in Ipswich from 1681 to 1685, where their first 4 children were born, but came back to Rowley, had 5 more children. Joseph died on 30 Oct 1694 in Rowley, at age 38, after 13 years of marriage. He was survived by 7 of his 9 children, aged 8 months to 13 years.

Ruth married (2) on 26 Oct 1696 to John LUNT, a tavern keeper in Rowley, born 22 Oct 1669 in Newbury, Essex, MA. She was 34 and he was 27. They had 4 or 5 children, in Rowley. She died on 29 Oct 1734 in Rowley, at age 72, and John died 22 Apr 1741 in Salisbury, Essex, MA, at age 71. They had been married 38 years.

Although John LUNT only outlived Ruth by less than 7 years, he remarried twice after she died. He married (2) Ann, widow of John RICHARDSON, on 18 Mar 1734/35, and (3) Mary FLANDERS on 12 Nov 1737.

For more information on Rowley and Ipswich, see my Essex Co MA page.

Descendants of Ruth WOOD

Ruth WOOD was married twice, and had several children. The first 4 were born in Ipswich, and the next 5 in Rowley. These 9 were children of Capt. Joseph JEWETT. The next 4 or 5, also born in Rowley, were children of Ruth's second husband, John LUNT. All of Ruth's children remained in northwestern MA, as far as I know.

The house that Samuel PLATTS (husband of Sarah VARNUM) inherited from his father, James PLATTS, in Rowley, "on the southerly side of Main Street, nearly opposite the southerly end of Pleasant Street." [GBB, pp. 309-10]

Major Samuel VARNUM and his 2nd wife, Hannah MITCHELL, had 12 children, in Dracut. One of the children was Joseph Bradley VARNUM, born 29 Jan 1749/50 (some records have 1750/51) in Dracut, died 11 Sep 1821 in Dracut. He married on 26 Jan 1773 in Pelham, Hillsborough, NH to Molly BUTLER, who was born 4 Jun 1750 in Pelham, and died 17 Apr 1833 in Dracut.

Joseph Bradley VARNUM had a distinguished career in the military and in politics. He was already a Captain at age 18, and commanded the militia company from Dracut in the American Revolution, He continued to rise in the ranks, eventually attaining the rank of major general in 1805. He was a member of the U.S. House from 1795 to 1811, and was Speaker of the House from 1807 to 1811. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1811 to 1817, and was the Senate's President pro tempore from 1813 to 1814.

2. Joshua JEWETT was born 26 Aug 1683 in Ipswich, and died 15 Oct 1684 in Ipswich, age 13 months. [JA, Vol. I, p. 35]

However [GBB, p. 190] says he died 15 Oct 1694, not 1684. Joshua and Ruth reused the name, as their son Joshua JEWETT was born 16 Feb 1693 [JA, Vol. I, p. 35] or 16 Feb 1694/95 [GBB, p. 190]. Records for the 2nd Joshua favor [GBB].

3. Hannah JEWETT was born 3 Apr 1685 in Ipswich, Essex, and died 23 Nov 1685 in Ipswich, age 7 months.

Hannah and Elizabeth were twins, but they were not baptized at the same time. Hannah was baptized on 26 Apr 1685, [JA, Vol. I, p. 35]

4. Elizabeth JEWETT, Hannah's twin, was born 3 Apr 1685 in Ipswich, was baptized on 10 Apr 1687, with her brother Joseph. She died in 1713, age 27 or 28. " She was of a weak mind. Her estate was settled by her brother Joseph." [JA, Vol. I, p. 35]

5. Joseph JEWETT III was born 10 Apr 1687 in Rowley, and died 10 Aug 1747 in Rowley, age 60. He married on 27 Mar 1706 in Rowley, to Mary HIBBERT, born 1690 in Rowley, died 26 Jun 1732 in Rowley.

Mary (HIBBERT) JEWETT was survived by her husband and 7 of her 9 children, ranging in age from 8 to 23. The 2 eldest sons both became Captains in the local militia, and the younger son was a well-known preacher. Capt. George JEWETT was made Quartermaster of Capt. John PEARSON's troop of horse on 16 May 1757. He was called "the strongest man ever known in Rowley." [JA, Vol I, p. 103]

Joseph remarried about 4 months after his 1st wife died, to Mary PAYSON. They were both 45 years of age. No children came from this union.

Biography of Rev. David JEWETT

He graduated from Harvard College in 1736, and was ordained pastor of the Second Church in New London (now Montville), Conn. Before going to New London he was employed as a missionary to the Mohegan Indians and acquired the favor of the tribe. He was their steady and constant friend, was their counseller and adviser in both temporal and spiritual matters, often preaching to them and particularly on the death of Ben Uncas (1769), who was the last Sachem of the Mohegans. ("Hist, of Conn. Indians."—Danforth.) No minister in the country stood higher among his own flock, or in the esteem of his brethren than Mr. Jewett. He was a man of dignified deportment, rigorous in discipline, but very assiduous in his calling. ("Hist, of New London, Conn."—Caulkins.)

He was a chaplain in the Army in 1756, often afterwards in the French War, and the Revolution. In the church record he says of himself, "I was recommended to this church from the Church of Christ in Rowley, the Rev. Mr. Jewett, Pastor," "My wife Patience, was recommended from the church in Salem, Mr. Fisk, Pastor."

The tradition is, that he became engaged to Miss Phillips while he was a student of theology; that he was very ill and she, being a member of the same family, nursed him so kindly and assiduously as to produce a life-long and loving attachment between them. The tradition of the origin of this attachment has been preserved in his Parish to account for him marrying a lady born with only one hand and about ten years older than himself.

His will, dated a short time before his decease, mentions: His wife Mary; son David Hibberd Jewett, and my grandchildren David, Charles, Elizabeth, and Sarah Jewett; my dear son-in-law Elisha Porter, Esq., of Hadley, and my grandchildren Samuel and Sarah Porter. He died in New London, Conn., March 17, 1785, leaving an estate amounting to £1847, 12s, 1d.

[JA, Vol. I, pp. 105-6]

6. Sarah JEWETT was born 3 Feb 1689 in Rowley, and died 20 Nov 1722. She married (1) on 23 Mar 1706 in Rowley, to Samuel PRIME, b: 29 Dec 1675 in Rowley, died 4 Mar 1718 in Rowley, and (2) on 7 Oct 1718 in Rowley, to Robert ROGERS, born 20 Feb 1682 in Ipswich and died 18 Apr 1723 in Rowley.

The 6 children of Sarah and Samuel are listed in [GBB, p. 316] and [JA, Vol. I, p. 56]. However, [VD, p. 128] has Mary PRIME, wife of Samuel VARNUM, and calls her the daughter of Samuel PRIME and Sarah JEWETT. Mary is not included in the previous lists. So there may be some mistake.

Samuel and Sarah died young (42 and 33), and I don't know of any of their children living past 57.

Information about Robert ROGERS, and the 2 children he and Sarah had in Rowley, is in [GBB, p. 316]. Also see the Robert ROGERS memorial on Find a Grave. No references are cited, but the information seems consistent with other sources.

9. Joshua JEWETT was born 16 Feb 1694/95 in Rowley, and died 31 Oct 1760. His brother Joshua was born 26 Aug 1683 in Ipswich, and died 15 Oct 1684 (see above). So the parents were trying the name Joshua for the second time. Joshua himself named 3 of his sons Joshua Jr, but he outlived all 3.

Birth record for Joshua JEWETT, from Rowley Records

Joshua married on 4 Apr 1715 in Rowley, to Mary TODD, daughter of John TODD and Elizabeth BROCKLEBANK. Mary was born 21 Sep 1696 in Rowley, and died 1 Sep 1775 in Rowley. So Joshua was 20 and Mary was 18 when they married. Their house in Rowley, on the comer of Cross and Central Streets, was on the lots laid out to Francis PARRETT and John JARRET in 1643. Joshua held several offices in Rowley, including Selectman, and was ordained Deacon of the Rowley Church on 25 Oct 1760. [JA, Vol. I, pp. 57-8]

The story of this family is a tragic one. Joshua and Mary had 9 children, but only 1 survived past age 19. There were 2 who died in infancy, and 4 more who died between 9 Jun and 1 Jul 1736, in the "throat distemper" epidemic (possibly diphtheria). After 1736 they were left childless, but then had 2 more sons, one dying at age 19, with only Paul remaining.
