Spruill, Stephen

Stephen SPRUILL (1786 - 1869) and Margarett (1783 - 1857)

my 4g-grandparents

The name SPRUILL was often spelled SPRUELL, SPRUIELL, and SPREWELL, sometimes with one L. Just to be consistent, I'll try to use the SPRUILL spelling, which is probably the most frequently used, although some branches of the family seem to have adopted some of the other options, later.

Stephen SPRUILL was born in 1786, in Abbeville County, SC, the son of William SPRUILL and Elizabeth ROBERGSON. He died in Aug 1869, at the age of 82 or 83. He was a farmer all his life. He was not marked as illiterate in the 1850 US Census (below), but he signed with a mark on his Reconstruction Oath, on 9 Jul 1867.

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/spruill-stephen/south-carolina-county-map.jpg

Present day Abbeville County, SC is in the northwest part of the state.

Stephen married Margarett, who was was born about 1783, although she reported her age as 64 in the 1850 US Census (below), which would imply that she was born in 1785 or 1786. This census also gives us our only clue as to her birthplace, as it says she was born in VA. She died in Dec 1857 in De Kalb or Fulton County, GA, at age 73 or 74. The marriage was probably about 1808, in Abbeville.

All researchers have Margarett's maiden name as LORD, but I haven't seen any evidence. There were a few LORD families in Abbeville. All we really know about Margarett before Stephen is that she was born about 1783-6 in VA.

I don't know if Stephen took part in the War of 1812, or how the family may have been affected by the war. In his late 20s, he may have enlisted, but he also had small children at home.

Between Dec 1815 and Aug 1819, Stephen and family moved about 80 to 100 miles west, to Jackson County, GA. This is based on birth dates and places of their children. Wilson E. SPRUILL was born 27 Dec 1815 in Abbeville, SC, and James T. SPRUILL was born 18 Aug 1819 in Jackson, GA. There was a child in between, Nancy SPRUILL, born 1 Dec 1817, but there is some doubt as to whether she was born in SC or GA. See the section on Nancy, below.

De Kalb County, GA was formed in 1822, and the SPRUILL family moved there by 1830, and settled in the northern part of the county, near Cross Keys. There were other SPRUILLs in the area, probably related.

Stephen never owned any slaves, as far as I can tell. He did own over 600 acres of land, not counting land owned by his sons and sons-in-law.

The birth and death dates for Stephen and Margarett appear on their shared gravestone in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County (previously part of DeKalb County), GA. The spellings of their names that I use here are also as they appear on the stone. Stephen and his family were Methodists, and among the Founding Members of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church.

In 1810, at age 24, Stephen SPRUILL/SPRUELL was the head of a household, which appears to have two young couples, and a child. The child is probably Selecia, born 2 Jul 1819, in Abbeville, first child of Stephen and Margarett. See the section on Selecia, below.

Nearby in the census were George SPRUELL (age 26-44, family of 8), Simeon SPRUELL (age 26-44, family of 6), and Jeptha SPRUELL (age 16-25, family of 3). I have not sorted out all the SPRUELLs in Abbeville.

The 1820 US Census has the family in Jackson County, GA. The ages of the children match up with other records. There is still 1 young male with the family, age 16-25, possible a relative or farmhand, and 1 unknown female, 26-44.

In 1820, Simeon SPROULL (age 26-44, family of 5), Samuel SPREWELL (age 26-44, family of 4), William SPREWELL (age 45+, family of 9) were in Abbeville, SC. There were many SPRUILL families in NC.

By 1830, the growing family was in newly formed De Kalb County, GA. Most of the children's ages match up to known children, but there is an extra boy, 15-19, and James, age 11, is missing. There is also an extra boy, 5-9, who probably didn't live until 1840. It appears that Selecia, age 20, had left home, which makes sense since other records tell us that she was married and had 2 children by 1830.

In 1830, also in De Kalb County GA, William SPRUEL (age 60-69, family of 6), and in Fayette County GA, another William SPRUELL (age 20-29, family of 3). The elder William SPRUEL is probably Stephen's father, who was in Abbeville, SC in 1820.

In 1840 Stephen SPRUIL was in De Kalb County. He should have been about 54, but appeared the 40-49 group, probably an error. The male 20-29 must be William (27) or James (21). It can't be Wilson (25) who was married in 1838. Selecia (30) and Nancy (23) had married and started their own families.

Also in the 1840 US Census for De Kalb County were two William SPUELL households. The two families are similar, possibly both records for the same family. This William may be a younger brother, or cousin, of Stephen. At any rate, there was more than one SPRUILL/SPRUELL family in early De Kalb County.

The 1850 Census had several SPRUILL families in Cross Keys Township, De Kalb County, Georgia. They are all farmers. [Note: This census is very hard to read. The copy at Ancestry is almost completely illegible, and I don't know how the transcriber has been able to read it. The copy at Familysearch is better, but the page images are out of sequence with the transcription. I have tried to make the best of it, but there may be mistakes.]

Birthdates are calculated from the given age, so they are approximate. The s column indicates those who have attended school within the year. The i column indicates those over age 20 who are illiterate. Relationships are not given.

Since they appear close together in the census, we might suspect that Mary (23), Stephen (29), James (29) and W. E. (34) are children of Stephen (63) and Margarett (64). This is corroborated by [JS], if Mary is the wife of Stephen SPRUILL, Jr. They probably work on or near the Stephen SPRUILL farm.

Family 42 is the same SPRUILL family we have followed through previous censuses, above. Stephen is a Farmer, and owner of a large farm. Elizabeth MORGAN may be a daughter, or possibly a servant. James POSS is probably a farmhand. We learn that Margarett (LORD) SPRUILL was born in VA. It is curious that Elizabeth and James don't have any occupation.

Family 66 has Mary SPRUILL, but her relationship to the ARENDALL family is unclear.

Family 67 is Stephen Jr, and Margaret is possibly his wife, although her age is illegible. Stephen and Margaret had 4 children in 4 years.

After a closer look at the family, I believe Mary SPRUILL is not with the ARENDALL family (#66), but is the wife of Stephen SPRUILL Jr (#67), and Margaret is the eldest child of Stephen Jr and Mary.

Family 68 is also a young couple with 4 children.

Family 71 is a young couple, W. E. and Eliza I. SPRUILL, with 7 children, and one farmhand living with the family. If W. E. SPRUILL is the son of Stephen and Margaret, then since he was born in 1816 in SC, the move from SC to GA must have been between 1816 and 1820.

SPRUILL land

1872 map of the parts of Oak Grove and Buckhead where the SPRUILL land was located. [source]

Tax records from De Kalb County for 1848-50 show several properties owned by Stephen SPRUILL and his sons and sons-in-law, in Oak Grove (GM 1100) District and Buckhead (GM 722) District. This area became part of Fulton County when it was formed in 1853, and was covered by the Fulton County tax records. It seems that the section numbers remained the same. It also seems, based on the numbering, that Oak Grove was part of Cross Keys District when it was in De Kalb County.

The part of Oak Grove District, where most of the SPRUILLs lived, came to be known as Sandy Springs.

Some of the land distributed in the Georgia Land Lotteries were in 405 acre parcels. These were often divided into halves, 202.5 acres each, or quarters, 101.25 acres each. So we see many properties with an integer multiple of 101.25 acres.

In 1856 Stephen SPRUILL Sr owned 607.5 acres in Oak Grove, No. 90, 91, 122, 123, valued at $3,000. This land was all 3rd quality, oak and hickory, which probably means that it was mostly uncultivated. His sons, Wilson E. SPRUILL and Stephen SPRUILL Jr were also large landowners. In 1864 Stephen Sr, Wilson, and Stephen Jr had 600, 400 and 312 acres, valued at $6,000, $5,000 and $2,000 respectively. James SPRUILL also had over 300 acres in Buckhead, and more in the Shallowford District that stayed in De Kalb County. In 1882 James was one of the 15 largest land owners in De Kalb County, with 607 acres.

Oak Grove No. 69 - part of W. E. SPRUILL's land in 1859, 1864, 1869.

Oak Grove No. 71 - part of W. E. SPRUILL's land in 1857, 1859.

Oak Grove No. 73 - 202.5 acres of Sarah WAITS estate, admin. W. E. SPRUILL. In 1855 it was called 70 acres of quality 2, 132.5 acres quality 3, valued at $1,200. In 1856, 7, 8 it was all quality 3, but still $1,200.

Oak Grove No. 81- This seems to be in the northern tip, not shown in this map. James SPREWELL had 202.5 acres here in 1857, valued at $700. Then in 1859 James had 202.5 acres in No. 18, valued at $700. I suspect a misprint: either 18 should be 81 or vice versa?

Oak Grove No. 89 - Wilson E. SPREWELL had 180 acres here in 1855. 6, 7, 9 and 1864. Stephen SPRUILL Sr had 101.25 acres here in 1855 and 1859. Site of the spring that Sandy Springs was named after.

Oak Grove No. 90 - Wilson E. SPREWELL had 405 acres here in 1849. He had 101.25 acres here in 1855. 1856, 1857, 1864, 1869. Stephen SPRUILL Sr had 101.25 acres here in 1848, 1849, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1859, 1864, 1869. Also Stephen SPRUILL Jr had some land here in 1849 and 1864.

Oak Grove No. 91 - Wilson E. SPREWELL had land here in 1849. He had 101.25 acres here in 1855. 1856, 1857, 1864, 1869. Stephen SPRUILL Sr had 101.25 acres here in 1855, 1856, 1857, 1859, 1864, 1869. Stephen SPRUILL Jr hand land here in 1849.

Oak Grove No. 92 - Stephen SPRUILL Jr had 202.5 acres valued at $300 in 1856, 7, 9, and 1864, 9. In 1875 there was a 5-acre plot, valued at $50, under the names of Stephen SPRUELL and Milton COX, his son-in-law.

Oak Grove No. 93 - Stephen SPRUILL Jr had land here in 1864, 9.

Oak Grove No. 121 - Stephen SPRUILL Sr had land here in 1864.

Oak Grove No. 122 - Stephen SPRUILL Sr had land here in 1850, 55, 56, 57, 59 and 64.

Oak Grove No. 123 - Stephen SPRUILL Sr had land here in 1848, 49, 50, 55, 56, 57, 59 and 69.

Oak Grove No. 124 - Stephen SPRUILL Sr had land here in 1869. Site of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church.

Oak Grove No. 125 - W. E. SPRUILL was admin of John AUSTIN estate including 50 acres valued at $100.

Oak Grove No. 127 - William C. AUSTIN, son-in-law of Stephen SPRUILL Sr, had 5 acres valued at $300 in 1855.

Buckhead No. 136 - William SPRUILL had 101 acres of 2nd quality, 101 acres of 3rd quality land in 1848. James SPRUILL had land in 1849. Probably the same land.

Buckhead No. 162 - James SPRUILL had 151 acres 2nd quality and 152 acres 3rd quality in 1850.

Buckhead No. 174 - James SPRUILL had land in 1849.

Sandy Springs United Methodist Church and Cemetery

Stephen and Margarett have a shared gravestone in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, in the Oak Grove District, Fulton County, GA. Some of their sons and sons-in-law were among the founding members.

Church History: In the summer of 1848 church members erected a brush arbor in which to worship. The members consisted of the families of William and Franklin Austin (sons of John Austin), and James and William Spruill, all from South Carolina. In 1851 Wilson Spruill gave approximately five acres for a new church at the present site of SSUMC. The first trustees of the new church were William Austin, William McMurtrey, James E. Spruill, Stephen Spruill, and William W. Sentell. The new one room log church was also used as a school. In 1866 the log church was replaced by a frame structure. The frame church was a simple one room building with a center aisle where the men sat on the left and the women on the right. [SS]

Descendants

Stephen and Margarett had about 7 children. Many records don't give parent-child connections, so we can't be certain. It's generally accepted that they had the following 4 sons and 3 daughters. All but 1 son and 1 daughter survived through the Civil War, and lived to an advanced age.

Many of the grandsons and grandsons-in-law of Stephen and Margarett fought in the Civil War, on the Confederate side, and quite a few were wounded or killed. The war was devastating for this extended family. They were mostly farmers, with no slaves, who believed strongly in the Southern Cause.

1. Selecia SPRUILL was born 2 Jul 1810 in Abbeville, Abbeville, SC, and died 3 Apr 1894 in Cobb, GA. She married Nathaniel REED, who was born 14 Dec 1808 in GA, and died 19 Jun 1892 in Cobb, GA. Their gravestones in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA, bear these dates.

I don't have the marriage record, but some researchers say they were married on 15 Mar 1827, in Cobb County. That would make sense, since their first child was born 2 Dec 1827 in Cobb County. So they were 18 and 16 when they were married, and started a family soon after. By 1830, they lived in De Kalb County, GA.

Some researchers have Nathaniel's parents as Isaac REED (1787-1887) and Elizabeth SPRUELL (1783-1855) of Anderson County, SC. I have not seen evidence of this, or how Elizabeth might fit in with the SPRUILL/SPRUELL extended family. Census records agree that Nathaniel was born in GA, 1808, but it can't have been De Kalb County, which was Indian Territory until 1822.

The REED family in front of their house.

In 1848 Nathaniel REED paid taxes on 160 acres of 3rd quality and 75 acres of 1st quality land in Randal District, Cobb County, GA. In 1849 he paid taxes on 160 acres in Merritts District, Cobb County. This may be the same 160 acres as in 1848 - the records are confusing. In 1851 he had 138 acres 2nd quality, 139 acres 3rd quality in Merritts. So it seems likely that he was in Merritts in 1850. However, this family seems to have been missed by the 1850 US Census. They are in Merritts in 1860.

From an unknown newspaper. I think that Nathan and Sylvia REID are Nathaniel and Selecia REED. Oakly Mills is undoubtedly Oakley Mill, Cobb County, GA.

Nathaniel Reed (1808 - 1892)

The 1860 US Census has Nathaniel and Selecia in Cobb County, with their 6 youngest children. Their son Stephen was married, and also living with them, or nearby. Nathaniel owned a fair amount of property, but had a large family to feed. The census says that all were born in GA, including Nathaniel and Selecia, but we can be pretty sure that they weren't in De Kalb County as early as 1808 and 1810.

The 3 eldest REED sisters shared 2 husbands. So 4 marriages among 5 people produced 18 children.

Delanie Allen REED married William Watson JOLLEY. I don't have the marriage record, but their first child was born 15 Apr 1852, when William was 25 and Delanie was 24. They had at least 9 children, from 1852 to 1867. Delanie (REED) JOLLEY died in 1870, age 43.

Margaret REED married Henry Culp CASTLEBERRY. Again, the marriage date is unknown, but their first child was born 28 Jul 1850, when Henry was 26 and Margaret was 21. The 1850 US Census, taken 12 Nov 1850, has the family of 3 in Merritts District, Cobb County, GA. Henry was a farmer, with property valued at $1,000. They had 2 children after 1850, and Margaret (REED) CASTLEBERRY died in 1857, age 27 or 28.

Katie REED married both of the widowers of her sisters. She married (1) Henry Culp CASTLEBERRY after Margaret died. Their first child was born 22 Nov 1858, so they probably married in late 1857 or early 1858, and Katie, age 25, undoubtedly took over the care of Margaret's 3 children, and had 3 more of her own. Henry Culp CASTLEBERRY enlisted on 10 Mar 1862 in Company H, 7th Georgia Infantry, and died on 7 Jul 1862. This was 6 days after the Battle of Malvern Hill. After her sister Delanie died in 1870, Katie married her widower, William Watson JOLLEY, in 1871. They had 3 children, from 1872 to 1876. Katie (REED) (CASTLEBERRY) JOLLEY was mother or stepmother of 18 children! She died 4 days before her 85th birthday, during World War I.

(Sarah) Elizabeth REED married Jehu M. KEMP, about 1857, since the 1900 US Census says they had been married 53 years. They had a daughter, Margaret M. KEMP (1857, GA) and a son, Marion C. KEMP (1860, GA). In 1860 they lived in Gritter District, Cobb County, GA. Jehu enlisted as a Private in the Georgia Infantry, Phillips' Legion, Company M. His left leg was injured at the Wilderness Battle in VA on 6 May 1864, and was amputated above the knee. In 1870 they were still in Gritter, where Jehu (called John) was a farm hand, with no real estate, but with a personal estate valued at $1,500. In 1875 Jehu paid taxes on 60 acres in Buckhead No. 93, Fulton County, valued at $500. This is the same section where Stephen SPRUILL Jr had some land. By 1892 Jehu had taken up the trade of Shoemaker, and moved to Atlanta. The address changed several times from 1892 to 1905. In the 1900 US Census they lived at 20 E 19th St, Peachtree, Fulton, GA and in 1910 they were in Alpharetta, Milton, GA, still running a shoe store. Jehu wrote his will on 1 Nov 1911 in Milton County, GA. He mentioned his grandchildren, but not his children, so they were probably deceased.

Loduska Arcaine REED married William Harris MITCHELL, in 1865. William had enlisted as a Private in the 38th Georgia Infantry, Company A, on 1 Mar 1862. He was wounded several times: on 28 Aug 1862 at 2nd Manassas, VA; on 13 Jun 1863 wounded in left shoulder and lung, at Winchester, VA; on 18 May 1864, wounded in foot and left hand, at Spotsylvania Courthouse. He was imprisoned on 6 Apr 1865 at High Ridge, VA, and paroled on 11 Apr 1865. In 1874 he owned 7.5 acres in Oak Grove No. 134, Fulton County, valued at $100.

Joel Sanders REED was only 14 when the Civil War started, but he eventually enlisted as a Private in the 4th Regiment, Georgia Reserves, Company D. He married in 1869, and lived in Oak Grove.

Mary Emmaline REED married William Samuel MARTIN, brother of Benjamin MARTIN, who married her 1st cousin, Sarah Washington SPRUILL. Benjamin and Sarah were my gg-grandparents. Mary and William share a gravesite in Sandy Springs First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Isaac Anderson REED (1840 - 1925)

James Wiley REED (1842 - 1919)

Four of the REED brothers enlisted in the "Roswell Guards", which became Company H of the 7th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. First, Isaac enlisted on 10 Jul 1861, less than 3 months after the start of the war. James enlisted on 23 Aug 1861. Andrew and Stephen enlisted on 4 Mar 1862. Their brother-in-law Henry Culp CASTLEBERRY also enlisted in the same unit on 10 Mar 1862. Stephen died of disease on 11 May 1862. Andrew had been promoted to Corporal, and died on 11 Oct 1864 in Richmond, VA. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery. Isaac was a Sergeant in Nov 1863 when he was shot 3 times, in fighting near Knoxville, TN. One of the bullets passed through his lung and lodged against his shoulder blade. He was taken prisoner, and spent the rest of the war in prison hospitals.

2. William SPRUILL was born 30 Dec 1813 in SC, and died 22 Jan 1846 in DeKalb, GA, age 32.

I'm not sure about William. A few researchers have posted the data that I include below, but I have not seen any evidence of the connection between William and the others. It is said that he was born 30 Dec 1813 in SC, the son of Stephen SPRUILL and Margarett LORD. He married Elizabeth (SISSON) MARTIN, widow of John MARTIN. After William died, Elizabeth and her children moved to Benton (later Calhoun) County, AL. So I am working to verify the data shown below.

There is room for William in the Stephen SPRUILL family. The 1820 US Census for Jackson County, GA has 3 boys in the family under 10, which could be William (7), Wilson (5), James (1). In the 1830 US Census for De Kalb County, GA, there are 3 males 15-19, which could be William (17), Wilson (15), and 1 more, possibly a farmhand. Also, William seems to have lived in De Kalb County, at least from 1838 until his death in 1846.

Benton was renamed Calhoun County in 1858, after a politician more favorable to slavery.

Elizabeth outlived her 2 husbands, and 5 of her 7 known children.

MARTIN, JAMES BENSON, lawyer, was born September 17, 1825, in Habersham County, Ga., and was killed in battle, December 20, 1861, at Drainsville, Va.; son of John and Elizabeth Martin, who lived in Georgia until the death of the former, after which time Mrs. Martin resided in Jacksonville. He was deprived of educational advantages by the death of his father, and when he was nineteen years old, went to Calhoun County, where he read law under Hon. A. J. Walker. He was admitted to the bar in 1845, and began to practice his profession in Jacksonville, first associated with J. L. Lewis, and later with A. J. Walker. In 1852, he was elected general of Alabama militia, and the following year, went to Talladega, where at different times he was associated with John T. Morgan and A. W. Bowie. He was elected to the State legislature from Talladega County in 1857; opened a law office in Cahaba in 1858; remained there for some months, then returned to Talladega. He was elected judge of the tenth circuit in 1860, and returned to Jacksonville shortly before the beginning of the War of Secession. He was commissioned captain of the Pope Walker guards, by Gov. Moore, May 27, 1861, and appointed by President Davis, lieutenant colonel of the Tenth Alabama Infantry regiment on its formation. The regiment was sent to Virginia, and in one of the first battles, the battle of Drainsville, Col. Martin was shot and instantly killed. He was a Democrat and a Presbyterian. Married: to Mary Elizabeth Nisbet, daughter of John and Nancy (Baldwin) Nisbet, of Jacksonville. Among his children were John Thomas Martin (q. v.), and James Benson Martin (q. v.). Last residence: Jacksonville.

3. Wilson E. SPRUILL was born 27 Dec 1815 in Abbeville, SC, and died 15 Apr 1890 in Fulton, GA. Gravestone in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA.

Wilson married Eliza Jane AUSTIN on 1 Feb 1838 in GA. Eliza was born 14 Mar 1819 in Greenville, SC, and died 19 Jul 1888 in Fulton, GA. She was the daughter of John W. AUSTIN and Elizabeth COPELAND.

In 1850 Wilson and Eliza lived in Cross Keys, with 7 children and a farm hand. Wilson owned real estate valued at $600, a small farm. The 3 oldest children had attended school in the past year. I think the tax records, mentioned above, show that Wilson owned a rather large amount of land, even as early as 1850.

Wilson SPRUILL and his large family, along with many of his siblings, were in the part of De Kalb County that became Fulton County, GA when it was formed in 1853. The value of Wilson's farm had gone from $600 in 1850 to $3,000 in 1860, so it appears he was doing well.

Wilson enlisted at age 48, as a Sergeant, on 27 Apr 1864, in the 2nd Regiment, Georgia Reserves, Company C. This was 13 days after his infant daughter had died, so it must have been a difficult time. His son Stephen died just 6 days after Wilson enlisted, at the Battle of Wilderness. His son John had died a year earlier.

On 27 Dec 1860 Stephen M. SPRUILL/SPRUELL was appointed postmaster at Oak Grove, Fulton County, GA. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, and served in the 9th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery, Company B, from Fulton County. He died on 3 May 1864 in VA. This was just before the Atlanta Campaign. The Battle of the Wilderness took place 4-5 May 1864, in VA.

Adaline SPRUILL married William Darius CHASE on 12 Mar 1861 in Fulton County. William enlisted as a 1st Sergeant in Georgia 40th Infantry Regiment, Company E, on 4 Mar 1862. He was later reduced in rank to a Private. He was wounded on 25 Nov 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN, and recorded as a deserter, but was a prisoner of war, released 7 Jun 1864. After the war, they lived in Gordon County, GA, and about 1872, the family moved to Izard County, AR.

John T. C. SPRUILL also served in the Confederate Army. A contributor on Findagrave says he died on 14 May 1863 at Chimborazo hospital #2 Richmond of typhoid, and is buried in Oakwood Confederate Cemetery Richmond, Va as J. T. C. SPREWELL.

Two articles mentioning sons-in-law of Wilson and Eliza SPREWELL

Speaking of the alleged Sprewell tragedy, near Doraville, details of which were vouched for by the Gwinnett Herald, the DeKalb County News says: There is no truth in the report nor foundation for it. The whole thing is supposed to have grown out of the capture of a negro burglar by Officer Joe Green, of the Atlanta police, some two weeks since, he being seriously cut at the time. Mr. Green is a son-in-law of Mr. Wils. Sprewell, of Fulton county. As the cutting and shooting affray between Green and the negro was published at the time, some one knowing Green as a son-in-law of one Sprewell, probably got the thing mixed in telling it.

4. Nancy SPRUILL was born 1 Dec 1817 in SC or GA, and died in Dec 1857 in DeKalb, GA. She married on 24 Dec 1835 in De Kalb County, to Maj. William Collins AUSTIN, who was born 29 Jul 1809 in SC, and died 13 Mar 1891, in Fulton County, GA. Their gravestones are in the Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA.

Although the birthdate of Nancy is on her gravestone, her birthplace is uncertain, as the family moved from Abbeville, SC to Jackson, GA at about that time. The 1850 US Census (below) says she was born in SC, and she did not live to appear in later censuses. However, some of her children did, and the censuses recorded parents' birthplaces. I tracked down 8 of these, and 7 said Nancy was born in GA, only 1 said GA.

William was a brother of Eliza Jane AUSTIN, who married Nancy's brother, Wilson (above). He was commissioned in 1839 as a Major of the 121st Battalion for the 332nd District.

In 1850 the AUSTIN family lived near Nancy's brothers, in Cross Keys. They were #69, Wilson was #71, James #68, Stephen Jr #67, and their parents #42.

Nancy died in Dec 1857, leaving William with 9 children, age 21 to 4. William married (2) Rebecca E. DELONG, on 11 Nov 1858 in Fulton County.

[Note: There was also a William C. P. AUSTIN, who married Rebecca BRITT in May 1842 in Gwinnett County, GA. They lived in Calhoun, Gordon County, GA in 1850 and 1860.]

The 1860 US Census has William with his 2nd wife Rebecca, and 7 children, the first 6 from his 1st wife. His 3 eldest had left home. So it appears that William and Nancy had 8 children: 3 sons and 5 daughters. The 3 sons were all killed in the Civil War. William and Rebecca also had about 9 children.

......2 [9 children, not shown here]

Elizabeth Caroline AUSTIN married (1) John P. WEST on 11 Oct 1859 in Atlanta. She was 23 and he was about 21. John enlisted as a Private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry (Robinson's). He died on 1 Mar 1862 in Staunton, VA. Elizabeth married (2) John J. WALRAVEN, on 30 Oct 1863 in Atlanta, whose 1st wife had died in 1862. John had been married about 12 years, and had several young children, when Elizabeth moved in.

William Franklin AUSTIN married Elizabeth J. PLASTER on 1 Dec 1859. They were both about 21. William enlisted on 26 Sep 1861 as a Private in Company A, 38th Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry, and was killed at the Battle of Antietam, 17 Sep 1862.

Mary Jane AUSTIN married Lorenzo D. "Dow" ADAMS in 1869, Fulton County. She was 28 and he about 25. They had 7 children. The first was born at Stone Mountain, De Kalb County, 16 Apr 1870, and the rest were born in Atlanta, from 1872 to 1882. The Atlanta city directory has them residing at 359 E. Peachtree in 1876. In 1878 and 1879 they were running a grocery store at 367 E. Peachtree. By 1884 they resided at 22 E. Pine, and Lorenzo was a drayman. In 1886 they were still at 22 E. Pine, and Lornzo was a bailiff for S. H. Landrum. In 1890 they still lived at 22 E. Pine, and ran a grocery store at the same location. In 1892 they moved their residence and business to 98 E. Pine. Lorenzo died in 1892, and his will was probated on 2 May 1892. Mary still ran the store at 98 E. Pine in 1893, and still resided there in 1894. I'm not sure where she was after 1894.

Alexander Collins AUSTIN was 18 and unmarried when he enlisted on 26 Sep 1861, as a Private in Company A, 38th Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry, the same unit as his brother, William. Alexander was the first soldier killed in his regiment, on 27 Jun 1862, at the Battle of Gaines's Mill, a.k.a. the First Battle of Cold Harbor, in Hanover County, VA.

Thomas Manning AUSTIN also served the Confederacy, but I'm not sure what unit. His record on Findagrave says he is buried in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA, and that he died on 9 May 1864 of disease, on his way home.

Rosa Margaret "Rosey" AUSTIN married John Robert PANELL on 16 May 1869 in Fulton County. She had just turned 21 and he was almost 28. John had served as a Private in Company E, 22nd Georgia Infantry. They lived in Sandy Springs, Fulton County, where their 4 children were born. John died on 22 Dec 1876 in Sandy Spring. Rosa and her children lived in Oak Grove, Fulton County in 1880, where she was a farm laborer. Rosa moved to Atlanta by 1893, and lived there with some of her children. Their address in 1893 was 201 Highland Ave, and sons Crawford A. and Joseph Austin were clerks at W. J. HOGAN. In 1894 they lived at 67 E. Harris, and son Crawford A. was a clerk at R. E. HARRIS. In 1901 they lived at 153 Summit ave, where Crawford A. was a clerk at P. H. DONNALLY & Co and Joseph Austin was a driver for Capital City Laundry. In 1908 Rosa lived alone at 55 Boulevard pl, and Joseph Austin PANELL had become a lawyer, residing at 286 Peachtree. Rosa passed away on 28 Aug 1917 in Atlanta.

Nancy Eveline AUSTIN married Joshua Harris PANELL on 31 Mar 1872 in Fulton County. She was 19 and he was 23. They lived in Center Hill, Habersham, GA in 1880. They had 9 children, and by 1910 they had moved to Stephens County, GA, where he died in 1914, and she in 1921. Joshua was a younger brother of John Robert PANELL, who married Nancy's sister, Rosa. John and Joshua were sons of Joseph Sanford "Josephus" PANELL and Lydia "Liddie" SEAGER.

Frances Emmeline AUSTIN married William R. RICE on 31 Dec 1874 in Fulton County. She was 21 and he was 23. They lived in Buckhead in 1880, where William was a farmer. They lived with or next to his parents. Frances and William had 10 children, and stayed in Fulton and De Kalb counties. William died in 1911 and Frances in 1927.

5. James Thomas SPRUILL was born 18 Aug 1819 in Jackson, GA, and died 12 Jan 1899 in DeKalb, GA. He married Almeda Jane Millie Mollie ADAMS on 17 Mar 1842 in DeKalb, GA. She was born 2 Nov 1821 in Jackson, GA, and died 05 Sep 1896 in DeKalb, GA. They were my 3g-grandparents.

See the James T SPRUILL page.

6. Stephen SPRUILL Jr was born 27 Jan 1822 in Cross Keys, DeKalb, GA, and died 11 Dec 1899 in Fulton, GA. He married Mary WRIGHT on 31 May 1844 in De Kalb County. She was born 8 Dec 1826 in Fulton County, GA and died 8 Mar 1910 in Fulton County, GA. Mary was the daughter of Lewis WRIGHT and Martha STONEHAM. Stephen and Mary had about 12 children, probably all on the farm in Cross Keys.

In the 1850 US Census (above), the family appears in a group with Stephen's parents and several siblings and their families, in Cross Keys, De Kalb, GA. Their children were James T (1847), Thomas (1848), John M (1849), and one female with no name (1850).

The 1860 US Census for Oak Grove District has two Stephen SPREWELLs, both age 38, born about 1822 in GA, and both had wives named Mary, born about 1825-6 in GA. These similarities strongly suggest that the two records are for the same couple, except that the names and ages of the children are different. Maybe they are cousins?

The first Stephen SPREWELL in the 1860 US Census, let's call him Stephen1, is living in the same household as Stephen Sr, so he must be Stephen Jr. His inferred children are Sallie (1852), William (1854) and Welson (1856).

The second Stephen SPREWELL, let's call him Stephen 2, had children in 1860:
Margaret A (1845), James T (1847), Thomas E (1849), Sarah F (1851), Martha A (1855), Georgia (1859), Mary E (1853).

Compare these with the children of Stephen3 and Margaret SPRUILL in the 1850 Census:
James T (1847), Thomas (1848), John M (1848), girl (1850).

Stephen 3 and Stephen2 both have James T and Thomas. John M who was present in 1850 would have been about 12 in 1860, and he was not present. And where was Margaret A in 1850? Sarah F could be the female with no name from 1850.

Stephen3 does seem closely related to the others, as his family in 1850 was #67, listed next to #68 James SPRUILL, son of Stephen Sr. Also, in family #66, Mary SPRUILL, daughter of Stephen Sr, appears to be a servant. And Stephen Sr and Margarett Sr are nearby, family #42.

The wife of Stephen3 in 1850 appears to be Margaret, although her age is illegible. It is possible that she was Margaret who was the daughter of Stephen2 in 1860, so her age would have been 5 in 1850. Maybe Stephen3 had a first wife, the mother of the children listed in 1850, and she died before 1850. Then he married Mary, who was his wife in 1860, when he appeared as Stephen2.

This is made even more complicated by the poor condition of the 1860 US Census. The copy at Ancestry is almost illegible, and the data must be considered questionable.

James1 SPRUILL doesn't seem to have stayed in Fulton County very long. There are possible traces of Sallie, William and Welson.

The 1870 Census has the family matching up well with the second record from 1860. So I think the first record from 1860 is mistaken. Furthermore, I have not found any other record of Sallie (1852), William (1854) and Welson (1856).

Stephen SPRUILL left a large estate, valued at about $10,000, and after his death in 1899, there was a bitter dispute among his heirs. See the article below.

In 1875 there was a 5-acre plot in Oak Grove, Fulton, GA,, valued at $50, under the names of Stephen SPRUELL and Milton COX, his son-in-law. By 1880 Milton and Margaret were living in White County, GA.

MRS. COX ATTACKS HER FATHER’S WILL

Declared Her Parent Had Been Unduly Influenced.

FIVE DOLLARS HER PORTION

Ordinary Hulsey Decided Yesterday in Favor of the Will.

CASE WAS APPEALED TO SUPERIOR COURT

Mrs. Cox Charged That Other Members of the Family Sought to Have Her Cut Off.

Mrs. MARGARET A. COX yesterday attacked the will of her father, the late Stephen Spruell, in the ordinary’s court when that document was brought forth to be proven in solemn form.

She filed a caveat alleging that her father, from “extreme old age, imbecility of body and mind, want of memory and mental weakness, was not capable of making the will,” and charged that the document was not a voluntary act of Stephen Spruell, but was the result of threats and practices of his son, Thomas Spruell, and other members of the family.

Ordinary W. H. Hulsey decided that the document was the will of Stephen Spruell, directed that it be proven in solemn form and recorded upon the records of the office as such. Mrs. Cox then filed objection to the judgement and appealed the case to the supreme court.

Stephen Spruell died December 11th of last year and on the 30th of the same month his will was filed in the office of the ordinary. Thomas E. Spruell and Joseph S. Power qualified as executors.

Mr. Spruell left an estate, which was said to be worth about $10,000, to his wife and at her death it was to go to his children, Thomas E. Spruell, Oak Shade, Ga.; Martha A. Henson, Bolton, Ga.; Georgia A. Thompson, Bessemer, Ala.; Nancy V. Poss, Oak Shade, Ga.; Ella J. Power, Dunwoody, Ga. [Note: Oak Shade is probably Oak Grove.]

To Mrs. Cox, her father bequeathed the sum of $5. She considered the will inequitable and unjust in its provisions and filed a caveat, asserting that the document ought to be declared against. She alleged in her caveat that Mr. Spruell was laboring under a hallucination and delusion that his daughter was his enemy, when she was his friend, and charged that this belief on her father’s part was brought about by remarks made to him by other members of the family.

One of the reasons she advanced for filing the caveat was:

“Because the said will is not the will of the said testator, but is the will of his wife, Mary A. Spruell, and his son, Thomas Spruell, they having by force, fraud, threat, menaces and other practices, substituted their will for the will of the said testator, being moved thereto by their hatred of this caveatrix and their desire to obtain control of all the property of the said testator.”

Mrs. Cox was represented by Attorneys W. H. Terrell, S. C. Tapp and S. D. Johnson. The executors were represented by Colonel W. T. Moyers.

The Atlanta Constitution (Atlanta, GA) Wednesday, 21 Feb 1900, page 5

Margaret (SPRUILL) COX unsuccessfully contested her father's will in Feb 1900. Apparently there were some bad feelings between Margaret and her mother, and brother, Thomas. Margaret died the next year.

7. Elizabeth SPRUILL was born 7 May 1825 in GA and died 25 Jul 1894 in Ben Hur, Limestone, TX. She married James H. FARR on 22 Aug 1844 in GA. James was born 23 Mar 1822 in Union County, SC, and died 31 Mar 1876 in Montgomery, AR.

Between 1856 and 1859, the family moved from GA to Montgomery County, in west central Arkansas.

Mary and Margaret seem to have switched places between 1850 and 1860. James has substantially increased the value of his real estate. His middle initial is H, but it was J in the marriage record.

James H. FARR served in the Civil War, on the Union side. He had a wife and 7 children at home, in Caddo, when he enlisted.

In 1870, James H. FARR had taken up the miller's trade. He owned real estate valued at $480 and personal estate $300. So his fortunes had declined after the Civil War.

James H. FARR died on 31 Mar 1876, in Montgomery County, age 54. His will was probated on 26 May 1876 in Montgomery County.

In 1880, Elizabeth lived with her daughter Mary, and her family, and with her sons, John and James. Quintus was still running the sawmill, and employed his sons. The census also tells us that Elizabeth was widowed, and Mary, John and James are marked as illiterate.

I have no record of Elizabeth (SPRUILL) FARR after 1880.

Of their 8 children, 3 stayed in AR, 4 moved to TX, and 1 moved to OK.

Quintus Cincinnatus ROWTON was born 26 Oct 1843 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford, TN, and died 31 Aug 1886 in Hickman, Scott, AR. These dates appear on his gravestone in Square Rock Cemetery, Waldron, Scott County, AR, although several other records indicate that he was born about 1841-2. He enlisted and mustered on 1 Jul 1862, in the 33rd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, Company I. He was a Sergeant. On 24 Aug 1865 he married Mary Jane FARR, in Caddo, Montgomery, AR. They lived in Caddo, where Quintus was a farmer. Between 1870 and 1880 they moved to Hickman, Scott, AR, where Quintus ran a saw mill. Their children were: Ellen S (1867), Charles E (1871), Zacharia (1873), Evily M (1877), William D (Nov 1879), and Andrew J (1885). In 1910 Mary Jane lived with her son, Andrew, and his family in Justice Precinct 1, McLennan, TX. Mary Jane was born in 1847, and died in 1915, according to her gravestone in Rosenthal Cemetery, Rosenthal, McLennan, TX.

Margaret Emeline FARR was born about 1845-8 in GA, probably in Buckhead, De Kalb County. She moved to Montgomery County, AR with her parents about 1857, and there she married Lewis Day KELLY on 3 Mar 1863. Lewis was born about 1835-8 in OH, and died after 1910. They lived in Caddo in 1870, but moved to OK at some point.

Margaret Emeline (FARR) KELLY (1847 - 1897)

Lewis Day KELLY (1838 - 1916)

Thomas Stephen FARR was born about 1850 in GA, probably in Cross Keys, De Kalb County. The US Census has him with his parents in 1850, 1860 and 1870. No further record of him seems to be known. Some researchers say he was born 6 Jan 1850 and died 24 Dec 1875 in Arkadelphia, AR.
