Judevine, Cornelius

Cornelius JUDEVINE (1710 - ?) and Jane ROGERS

my 6g-grandparents

Cornelius JUDEVINE was baptized on 25 Jun 1710 in St. Lawrence, Thanet, County Kent, England. His parents, Cornelius and Susanna, had 2 more children. Their son Petr JUDEVINE was baptized on 13 Aug 1717, in St. Lawrence, but died at age 3. Two records give his burial date as 18 Oct 1720 and 21 Oct 1720, in St. Lawrence. Also, daughter Mary JUDEVINE was baptized 13 Jan 1722, in St. Lawrence. She probably died in infancy.

The biography of Albert JUDEVINE, a gg-grandson of Cornelius Jr, says that the family is "of French extraction." (See the William JUDEVINE page.) The name does appear to be French, and is often spelled JEUDEVINE, even on gravestones and official documents, and perhaps was originally JeuDeVine.

Susanna died in England, 1723, and Cornelius Jr and Sr journeyed to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

St. Lawrence (once called St. Laurence) is a village on the west side of the city of Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent, England. The population of St. Lawrence was 2,694 in 1848. The Isle of Thanet is separated from the mainland by the Wantsum Channel. Over the centuries, this area bore the brunt of many invasions from the European continent.

In Boston, on 19 Dec 1728, Cornelius JUDEVINE Sr married Mary, widow of Peregrine WHITE Jr, a descendant of William WHITE, who was one of the immigrants on the original voyage of the Mayflower, in 1620. In fact, Peregrine's father, Peregrine WHITE Sr, was born on the Mayflower, in Boston Harbor, on 20 Nov 1620.

Peregrine WHITE Jr was a blacksmith in Boston, born 1661/62 in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. He married (1) Susanna in 1684, then (2) Mary before 9 Jun 1696, as Mary, wife of Peregrine WHITE, was called as a witness in court on that date. So Mary must have been born before 1680, and hence she was at least 48 when she married Cornelius in 1728. That is why I believe the marriage record for Cornelius JUDEVINE and Mary WHITE from 1728 refers to Cornelius Sr, not Jr. And since the name Cornelius JUDEVINE is unusual, on this slim evidence I conclude that both Cornelius Jr and Sr came to Boston.

On 13 Mar 1755, Mary JUDEVINE of Boston, a widow, sold a house in Boston. So she lived to at least 75, and outlived Cornelius.

Boston marriage records has marriage intentions for Cornelius JUDEVINE, this one to Jane ROGERS, published on 24 Apr 1735. [BM] This matches Cornelius Jr. (See the William JUDEVINE page.)

The baptism record for William JUDEVINE, also from Boston, gives the date 12 Mar 1738, and his mother's name is Jane.

Cornelius Sr may have been a sea captain. The ship London was cleared for departure on 14 Aug 1736, from Charleston, SC to London, with captain Cornelius JEUDEVINE.
