Judevine, William
William JUDEVINE (1738 - 1814) and Patience GROUT (1740 - 1810)
my 5g-grandparents
William JUDEVINE, or JEUDEVINE, was born about 12 Mar 1738, probably in Boston, MA, since he was baptized on 19 Mar 1738, age 1 week, at the Brattle Square Church in Boston. [BSC] In this record, the name is spelled JUDAWINE, and his mother is Jane JUDAWINE. His parents were probably Cornelius JUDEVINE and Jane ROGERS, who published marriage intentions on 24 Apr 1735 in Boston. [BM]
William married Patience GROUT on 26 Jun 1759 in Lunenburg, Worcester County, MA. He was 21 and she was 18. They lived in Lancaster, Worcester, MA and had 5 children, born 5 or more years apart. They removed to Charlestown, Cheshire, NH probably between 1776 and 1778.
Patience GROUT was born 23 Aug 1740 in Lunenburg, Worcester County, MA., the daughter of John GROUT and Joanna BOYNTON.

1. Calvin JUDEVINE was born 28 May 1760 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. He married Mary FARWELL, probably about 1779, as their daughter was born 27 Dec 1779, when Calvin was 19 and Mary was 23.
Mary FARWELL was born 08 Nov 1756 in Groton, Middlesex, MA, daughter of Josiah and Lydia FARWELL. The FARWELL family, with 7 children, moved to Charlestown, Cheshire, NH about 1766, where they had 3 more children. More details on this family can be found in [FF, pp. 102, 176].
Calvin and Mary lived in Charlestown, Cheshire, NH, where they had about 6 children. Their dates of death are unknown.

Luther's birth date is unknown. He was married in 1802, so he must have been born before 1786. Only 3 sons appear in the 1790 US Census. Luther must have left home by that time, so he was probably the first born. Calvin also had a much younger brother named Luther, born about 1788, and nothing seems to be known about him. Maybe these are the same person.
Moses JUDIVINE was a 1st Lieutenant in the War of 1812, serving in the 1st (FISK's) Regiment, New Hampshire Militia.
In 1850 Joseph was a farmer, with no real estate, living in Cambridge, VT.
Josiah JUDEVINE, son of Calvin and Mary, had a clothing business in Vermont, with Joseph FARWELL, undoubtedly related to Josiah's mother. The partnership split up in 1811, when Joseph moved to Washington DC.

2. William JUDEVINE Jr was born 17 Jan 1765 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. He married Dolly, probably before 1794. They lived in Charlestown, and removed to Ontario County, New York about 1805. They first settled in the "Pan-Handle" part of Richmond Township, which extends southward, along the east side of Honeoye Lake.
William JUDEVINE in Richmond
THE PAN-HANDLE.
That portion of Richmond lying east of Honeoye lake is not inappropriately named the Pan-Handle ….
William Judevine located early upon the C. S. North place. He was from Connecticut, moved to Canandaigua, and reached an advanced age. His son, Harry, was captured by the Indians during the war of 1812, and by them brought to Fort Erie, where he was sold to friendly Indians and redeemed.
[EEE, p. 229]
About 1821, William and his family removed to Canandaigua Township, and settled on a farm in Section 44, between the villages of Canandaigua and Chaplinville.
1859 map of Ontario County, NY shows the Wm JUDEVINE property in Section 44, Canandaigua Twp.

Albert, son of William III
Jeudevine, Albert, Canandaigua, was born in Canandaigua, June 29, 1844, a grandson of William, the first of the family to settle in this country, coming from Charleston (sic) with a three horse team. He located in the town of Richmond in 1805, where he took up a farm. He lived there until about 1821, when he moved to Canandaigua. The family is of French extraction. William had five children: Henry, William, Luther, Patience, and Ann. William, the second son, father of our subject, was born in Charleston (sic), November 5, 1800, and came with his parents to this State. He went to Geneva about 1817, and there he worked at his trade until the time his father came to Canandaigua, when he located here and in 1845 bought a farm of sixty-two acres in the village, where he died June 28, 1873. He was a man of prominence in the town and held many offices. For nine years he was a trustee of the village and assessor of the town, plank road inspector, and commissioner of highways. He was a Whig and a Republican. Besides the old homestead farm, he owned the Wilson farm of eighty acres in Canandaigua, besides land in Michigan and Ohio. He married Sarah Mascho, and they had seven children, five of whom are living: Sarah M., Hannah and Frank live on the old homestead, and Charles G. and Albert. William, the oldest son, died August 4, 1891, aged sixty-six years. Harriet, oldest daughter, died June 30, 1889, aged sixty-two years. Albert was educated in Canandaigua Academy under Prof. Clarke, and took up farming. His first purchase was his present farm in Canandaigua, where he has erected a beautiful residence and new buildings. He married in 1875 Emma, daughter of Stephen A. Codding, of Bristol Centre, and they have four children: Frank H., Mary A., Albert L., and Sarah M. [ONY, pp. 102-3]
In 1850 Henry and his wife Sarah lived in Buffalo. Henry was a shoemaker, and owner of a significant amount of real estate. Three other people were in the same dwelling, probably related.
3. Luther JUDEVINE was born 25 Jan 1767 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. During the revolution, he moved, with his parents and siblings, to Charlestown, Cheshire (now part of Sullivan) County, NH.
Another Luther JUDEVINE was born 22 Aug 1778 in Charlestown, son of William and Patience. Since they used the name a second time, the Luther born in 1767 must have died.
4. Jane Rogers JUDEVINE was born 16 Apr 1769 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA.
5. Patience JUDEVINE was born 01 Jul 1771 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. He married Jacob BARTLETT, who was born about 1770. Patience and Jacob were my 4g-grandparents.
See the Jacob BARTLETT page for more information.
6. Cornelius JUDEVINE was born 02 Nov 1776 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA, and died 31 Aug 1862 in Concord, Essex, VT. He married twice. According to the obituary of his son Harvey (below), Cornelius married on 11 Jun 1809, to Lucy WETHERBEE, daughter of Capt. Samuel WETHERBEE, a soldier of the Revolution. They lived in Concord, Essex County, VT, and had 3 children.
[A lot of confusion is caused by the fact that several states in New England us the same names for places. The is a Concord in VT, NH and MA, and a Hardwick in VT and MA. I don't know where Concord Corner was, but maybe it was part of what is now Concord, VT.]
Lucy died on 29 Apr 1826, at age 43, according to Concord, VT records. So she was born in 1783 or 4.
Cornelius married, on 29 May 1827, to Eliza CUSHMAN. Eliza was born 28 Jul 1799. So Cornelius was 50 and Eliza was 27. They had no known children.

This was one of the wealthiest families in Concord, but that didn't protect them from a tragic history. The timeline for Luthera (1810-1847):
1843 Jul 17 - Luthera married Adolphus HOLTON. He was 21, she was 23.
1844 Dec 22 - birth of son, Cornelius Adophus HOLTON
1847 Mar 13 - birth of son, Alden Edson HOLTON
1847 Mar 27 - Luthera died, 2 weeks after childbirth, age 37 and 3 days
1850 Jan 25 - death of son Cornelius, age 5
1851 Sep 15 - death of son Alden, age 4
1859 Nov 8 - Adolphus remarried, to Helen Agusta BRIDGMAN. They had at least 4 sons, who lived to old age.
Alden, the brother of Luthera, had 4 children, 3 of whom died in infancy, and the 4th died in 1861, at age 16. Harvey, brother of Luthera and Alden, had only 1 child, who died in 1864, at age 16.
So, Cornelius and Lucy had 7 grandchildren, of whom 5 died in early childhood, and the other 2 died at age 16.
Alden, who often spelled his name JEUDEVINE, removed to Hardwick in 1839, and ran a store and grist mill in South Hardwick, VT, which he sold in 1844-5. He was in business at some time with Adolphus HOLTON, his brother-in-law.

In the 1850 Census, Cornelius lives with his second wife, and his children are living on their own. John and Esther may or may not be relatives. Cornelius had real estate valued at $5,400, which was a large sum in 1850. Esther had attended school within the previous year.
In 1860, Harvey has come to live with his father and step-mother. A young lady, Arathusa BARKER, is with the family, possibly a housekeeper. Cornelius is a prosperous, retired farmer.
