Huntley, Aaron 3

Aaron HUNTLEY (1654 - 1745) and Mary Champion (1651 - 1732)

my 7g-grandparents

Aaron 3 "Nason" HUNTLEY was born in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 15 April, 1654, the son of John 1 HUNTLEY and his second wife, Jane (possibly CURTIS). Aaron was baptized on 27 Oct 1657, in the First Church of Roxbury, a Congregational Church in Roxbury, MA, 2 miles southwest of Boston. In the old vital records of Lyme, his name appears as "Nason Huntly".

By 1661, the family had moved to Saybrook, CT area, and settled in Lyme. The family at that time consisted of John 1 HUNTLEY, his second wife Jane, and their 4 children, Moses 2 (1652), Aaron 3 (1654), Elizabeth (bapt. 1657), and Mary (bapt. 1660). By 1669, Jane had died, in Lyme, and John 1 had remarried. So Aaron 3 lost his mother at an early age, and then had a step-mother, and 2 younger stepsisters, Sarah (1669-70) and Alice (1673).

On 22 Feb 1676, in Lyme, CT, Aaron 3 HUNTLEY married Mary CHAMPION, who was born 1651 in Saybrook, CT, daughter of Henry CHAMPION and Sarah. He was 21 and she was 24-5. They had 8 children in Lyme, from 1677 to 1691.

On 16 Nov, 1676, John 1 HUNTLEY died, in Lyme. His "home lott" was left to Aaron 3 in his will. This property, "bounded westerly by the highway [Lyme Street], northwardly by lands of Josiah DeWolf, eastwardly by the commons and southerly by land and meadow of Mr. Moses Noyes,” was later handed down from Aaron 3 to his son David 7.

The Huntley House on Lyme Street

Turning north from the Waite mansion you are confronted by a quaint homestead which seems to be taking life comfortably right in the middle of “The Street”. Venerable trees rise above it and their branches droop over its small-paned windows. Its door-step is foot-worn, its hall of entrance of a pre-Revolutionary pattern and its whole architecture onesided; but it has an unmistakable air of gentility. If you enter you are plunged headlong into an aquamarine mine, paneled walls, curious cornices, enormous fire-places, high-mantels and round tables bring all your forefathers and foremothers round you in their powdered wigs and high-heeled shoes. The chairs and pictures are many of them two hundred years old. You may presume before you get to it that “The Street” ends plump against the little door-yard fence. No, The Street is guilty of no such impertinence. It dodges politely around the edifice and pursues its otherwise unbending course as if accustomed to trifling obstructions.

Harper’s magazine, Feb. 1876, Vol. 52, No. 309, page 318

Aaron 3 took part in King Philip's War, which was fought in 1675-8, between the Colonists and the Natives.

Due to his military service, Aaron 3 was given one whole soldier’s right. meaning that he was entitled to land, and he was awarded Lot #50, Dedar Swamp, Voluntown, CT. He sold this land for £8, to Joseph LATHROP of Norwich, CT on 5 Nov 1716.

Aaron 3 wore many hats: "Aaron Huntley served as Constable in Lyme for many years and also held other elective offices, being at various times fence viewer, lister, poundkeeper, packer (of beef & pork), and surveyor. He was one of the collectors of a minister’s rate, elected 26 Dec., 1700."

Mary (CHAMPION) HUNTLEY died 10 Dec 1732, in Lyme at age 81. Aaron 3 HUNTLEY died on 24 May, 1745, in Lyme, at the age of 91.
