Hubbell, Richard Jr

Lieut. Richard HUBBELL Jr (1654 - 1738) and Rebecca MOREHOUSE (? - 1692)

my 8g-grandparents

Richard HUBBELL Jr was born about 1654 in Guilford, CT, the son of Richard HUBBELL Sr (1626 - 1699) and Elizabeth MEIGS (? - 1665). He married Rebecca MOREHOUSE, and they had 4 children in Stratfield, Fairfield County, CT. Rebecca died on 2 Apr 1692, just 8 days after giving birth to Jonathan, my 7g-grandfather. Richard remarried on 12 Oct 1692 to Hannah SILLIMAN, of Malden, MA. They had 7 more children, in Stratfield.

Richard's parents, Richard Sr and Elizabeth, were married in New Haven about 1650 or 1651, and removed to Guilford, CT in 1653, and then to Stratfield in 1664, where they lived the rest of their lives. They had 9 children. So Richard Jr was about 10 when his family moved from Guilford to Stratfield.

Richard was a farmer, and also had a copper mine and a lead mine.

Rebecca MOREHOUSE was the daughter of Lieut. Samuel MOREHOUSE and Rebecca ODELL, of Fairfield.

Map of Early Fairfield [HF, Vol I, image 34] The area labeled Pequonnock was later called Stratfield, then Bridgeport.

Before the English settlers arrived, the Pequonnock Indians of the Paugussett nation lived on the banks of the Pequonnock River. One village on the west bank had about five or six hundred inhabitants in approximately 150 lodgings.

"In the year 1640 a commission was appointed by the General Court at Hartford, to go down to Pequonnock and settle the question of boundary, concerning which a dispute had arisen with their neighbors upon each side. Some time after this date the name of the plantation was changed from Pequonnock to Stratfield, a name compounded of Stratford and Fairfield, as a part of the settlement lay upon each side of the boundary line between these two places." [SNB, p. 34]

Richard HUBBEL Jr settled in Stratfield, often called by its Indian name, Pequonnock. It is now part of Bridgeport, in Fairfield County. Richard's 11 children were probably all born in Stratfield.
