Leonard, Josiah

Josiah LEONARD (1658 - 1689) and Sarah DUMBLETON (1654 - 1694)

my 8g-grandparents

Josiah LEONARD was born 28 Mar 1658 in Springfield, MA, and died 15 Feb 1688/89, in Springfield, MA, at age 30. His parents were John LEONARD and Sarah HEALD. Josiah was almost 18 when his father was killed by Indians, during King Philip's War.

Sarah DUMBLETON was born 5 Jan 1654/55 in Springfield, MA, and died 3 Jan 1693/94 in Westfield, MA, just 2 days before her 39th birthday. Her parents were John DUMBLETON and Mercy, possibly MARSHFIELD. After her husband's untimely death, Sarah married Thomas ROOTE or ROOT, on 25 Jan 1692. (Thomas was also my 8g-grandfather, through one of his sons by a previous marriage. They were both grandparents of Elisha ROOT, my 6g-grandfather. See the Thomas ROOTE page.) Sarah was 37 and Thomas about 61 when they married. They had twin girls, Thankful and Mary/Mercy, on 12 Nov 1693, and Sarah died when the twins were less than 2 months old.

Springfield was founded in 1636, part of Connecticut Colony until it joined with the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1640. Springfield was in Hampshire County, formed in 1662, and was in the southern part of Hampshire, that became Hampden County, MA in 1812.

On 6 Feb 1676/77, Josiah LEONARD was granted 30 acres near Sawmill Brook.

Descendants of Sarah DUMBLETON

Sarah had 3 children with Josiah LEONARD and 2 more by Thomas ROOTE. Her daughter Mary LEONARD married her stepfather's son, John ROOTE/ROOT. Mary and John were 5 and 15 when their parents married, so they probably lived in the same household for some time. They were my 7g-grandparents. See the John ROOT page.

1. Josiah LEONARD was born 21 Oct 1680 in Springfield, and died 14 Feb 1748/49 in Springfield, at age 68. He married on 16 Dec 1702 to Ruth ALLEN, born 5 Jan 1679/80 in Northampton, MA, and died between 1748 and 1766 in Springfield. They were both 22 when they married. They had 7 children, of whom 2 died in infancy.

Josiah's will was dated 9 Jul 1748, and proved 17 May 1749. He named his wife, Ruth, and sons Josiah, Abel, Ruben and Jonathan. He was a carpenter, and left the tools of his trade to his son, Ruben.

On 6 May 1766 Ruben LEONARD petitioned for distribution of land left to him and his brother. This shows that his mother was deceased. She died between 14 Feb 1748/49 and 6 May 1766.

2. Sarah LEONARD was born 16 Sep 1682 in Springfield, and died 24 Apr 1702, age 19. She married on 1 May 1700 in Deerfield, MA, to Joshua POMEROY, born 24 Sep 1675 in Deerfield, MA. She was 17 and he was 24 when they married. Sarah had 2 children: the 1st died after 3 days, and Sarah died 4 days after birth of the 2nd.

Joshua married 5 times, with Sarah as his 1st. He was a survivor of the Deerfield Massacre of 29 Feb 1704, in which his 2nd wife was killed. [AAP, pp. 159-60] Joshua had 6 children, of whom 3 or 4 died in infancy.

After escaping the Deerfield Massacre, Joshua settled in Dorchester, Norfolk County, MA, perhaps in the part of Dorchester that became Stoughton in 1726.. He was made Constable of Dorchester in 1712.
