Jewett, Joseph Sr

Joseph JEWETT (1609 - 1661) and Ann (? - 1661)

my 9g-grandparents (each had been married previously)

Joseph JEWETT (1609 - 1661) and Mary MALLINSON (1606 - 1652)

Joseph JEWETT was baptized 31 Dec 1609 in Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, son of Edward JEWETT and Mary TAYLOR. Joseph married (1) on 1 Oct 1634 in Bradford, to Mary MALLINSON, born 29 May 1606, also in Bradford. So John was 24 and Mary was 27 when they married. [JA, Vol I, pp. 13-17]

Mary was the daughter of Richard MALLINSON and Sarah WATERHOUSE.

Joseph was made a Freeman on 22 May 1639, and became a large landowner and leading citizen of Rowley. He was representative to the General Court in 1651, 52, 53, 54 and 60. He was called a clothier in 1656, and later a merchant.

Their son Jeremiah was born about 1637, in Bradford. There is some doubt as to whether their daughter Sarah was born 1636 in Bradford, or 1639 in New England. In the Fall of 1638, Joseph and his family, along with his brother Maximilian, came to New England on the ship John, and first stayed in Dorchester, where Joseph was admitted to the First Church of Dorchester on 4 Jul 1639. However they settled in Rowley, later in 1639, where they were among the first settlers. [GBB, p. 186]

Joseph and Mary had 4 or 5 more children in Rowley, and Mary died there, buried on 12 Apr 1652. At least one child had died in infancy, so Joseph was a 42-year-old widower with 5 children, aged 6 to 15.

Ann (? - 1661) and Bozoan ALLEN (1617 - 1653)

Capt. Bozoan ALLEN was born about 1617 in King's Lynn (sometimes called Lynn), Norfolk, England. He married Ann in 1838 or earlier, probably in or near King's Lynn. Ann's maiden name and origin are unknown, and we can only guess that she was born about the same time and place as Bozoan.

Bozoune Allen was the only one of the family to come to America. He was a “mercer” or trader. He came with wife and two servants from Lynn, England, in 1638, on the ship “Diligent” of Ipswich, John Martin, Master, and settled first in Hingham, Massachusetts.... He became prominent in both civil and military life. He was a town officer at Hingham and deputy to the general court. He was captain of the military company in Hingham. He was admitted a freeman, June 2, 1641, and was in the general court in 1643 and seven other years, not consecutive, the last being 1652. He removed to Boston, where he joined the Artillery Company. [HHWC, Vol. I, p. 404]

Ann and Bozoan settled in Hingham, on the southern side of Boston Harbor, about 10 miles southeast of Boston. They had at least 7 children, in Hingham, and moved to Boston in 1652, where Bozoan died on 14 Sep 1652. Ann was left with 5 to 7 children, aged 7 months to 13 years.

Joseph JEWETT (1609 - 1661) and Ann (? - 1661)

Joseph married (2) on 13 May 1653 in Boston, MA to Ann, widow of Capt. Bozoan ALLEN, of Boston. Presumably, Ann brought her 5 to 7 children with her to Rowley. Along with Joseph's 5 children from his previous marriage, they must have had quite a household. Joseph and Ann had 3 more children in Rowley, including my 8g-grandfather, Joseph Jr.

Ann was buried 8 Feb 1660/61, and Joseph on 26 Feb 1660/61, both in Rowley. They both left wills. She left £100 to be divided among her 4 children from her previous marriage: John, Ann, Isaac and Bossom ALLEN. She also mentions a daughter Priscilla. In [GBB, p. 3] we have a list of Bozoan and Ann's 7 children, including 2 who died before Ann. Joseph's will mentions 5 children from his 1st wife and 2 children from his 2nd.

There is some confusion about Joseph's daughter, Faith. He had a child by that name, born 5 Mar 1645, to his 1st wife, Mary MALLINSON. This Faith JEWETT died in infancy. [JA, p. 17] His daughter Faith JEWETT by his 2nd wife, Ann, is the one who married John PINGRY, but no birth or death records seem to exist for her. There was also a Faith JEWETT born to Joseph's brother Maximilian JEWETT, in 1652. Some of the records are mixed up.

Land in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony

Many of the immigrants who settled in Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony came from Essex and Suffolk Counties in England, and named towns and other features after places in old England. Town names like Rowley, Bradford, Ipswich, Salem and Topsfield appear in both places. Please see my Essex Co MA page for maps and information about Rowley.

In 1643, Joseph and his brother, Maximilian, both were 2-acre granted home lots on Bradford Street, on the west side of Rowley. They gradually accumulated many small and large properties in the area.

Early property owners on the west side of Rowley, MA. I believe this is the part of Rowley that later became Bradford. Joseph JEWETT Sr and his brother, Maximilian JEWETT, had 2-acre home lots near brothers William and John BOYNTON, and several others whose families intermarried with the JEWETTs. Cropped from a larger map of early Rowley, that can be seen on the Essex Co MA page.

In 1650, he [Joseph Jewett] bought of Samuel Bellingham (15), the original four-acre lot laid out to Mr. William Bellingham, with the Mansion house thereon “wherein Mr. Joseph Jewett dwelt at the time of his death” (Essex Deeds, 2 Ips.: 66) [GBB, p. 186]

1861 map showing Jewetts Hill, on the southeast side of Rowley village. Egypt River is not labeled - it connects Bull Brook with Rowley River, on the southeast side of Jewetts Hill. The villages are not labeled, but Rowley village is in the Town of Rowley (pink), and Ipswich village is in the Town of Ipswich (tan). Jewetts Hill is in the Town of Ipswich, but is closer to Rowley village than Ipswich village. [cropped from this source]

Joseph also had some land on the "Norwest side of Egipt River" which was inherited by his eldest son, Jeremiah. [JA, p. 27] The 1861 map above has Jewetts H[ill] in Ipswich, just between Bull Brook and Rowley village. Note: Egypt River (a.k.a. North River) is formed by the confluence of Bull Brook and Dow Brook. Along with Muddy River, it is a main tributary of Rowley River, which empties into Plum Island Sound.

Descendants of Joseph JEWETT and Mary MALLINSON

Joseph and Mary had 6 children. The first 1 or 2 were born in England, and the rest in Rowley, Essex, MA. All seem to have stayed in Essex County,

Sarah JEWETT was baptized 3 Jan 1635/36 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and died 17 Feb 1664 in Rowley. She married on 24 Jun 1657 in Rowley, to Capt. Philip NELSON, born about 1636, died 19 Aug 1691 in Rowley.

There is some doubt as to Sarah's birth date and place. In [JA, p. 28] she "was born probably in Rowley, Mass., about 1639." However, baptism records for Bradford, Yorkshire, England have Sarah, daughter of Joseph JEWETTE of Bradford, baptized on 3 Jan 1635/36. It is possible that the first Sarah died in England, and they used the name again for a child born in MA.

Sarah died at age 28, leaving Philip with 2 small children. Philip remarried to Elizabeth LOWELL, daughter of John LOWELL of Newbury. They lived in Rowley, and had 10 more children.

Philip NELSON was a son of Thomas NELSON, one of the wealthiest of the early settlers of Rowley. Philip graduated from Harvard College in 1654, the only graduate that year, and was a justice of the peace, in Rowley.

1681—“Mr Philip Nelson of Rowley wanders away and is lost from Ap. 5 to Satterday Ap. 9, Rowley and Newbury seeking him; on Satterday is found, having walked out of his place to take the air ; it was between two Rocks on Crane-Neck.” (Diary of Samuel Sewall, Vol. 2, p. 17.) He was a justice of the peace and captain of a company “under the command of Sir William Phipps who is goinge against the French at Nova Scotia.” [GBB, p. 243]

[10 more children]

Philip NELSON Jr and his wife, Sarah (VARNUM) NELSON, were among the primary accusers in the witchcraft trial of Margaret SCOTT, in Salem, MA. The accused was convicted, and executed by hanging on 22 Sep 1692, age 76 or 77.

Jeremiah JEWETT was born on 26 Dec 1637 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, and died 20 May 1714 in Rowley. He married on 1 Mar 1661 in Rowley, to Sarah DICKINSON, born 16 Oct 1644 in Rowley, died 30 Jan 1723/24.

Sarah was a daughter of Thomas and Janet DICKINSON. Sarah was 16 and Jeremiah was 23 when they married. Jeremiah was one of the soldiers from Ipswich in King Philip's War (1675-8).

Jeremiah and Sarah lived in Ipswich, near the boundary with Rowley, on the farm Jeremiah inherited from his father (see above). They were more closely associated with Rowley, as they attended the church there. Their 9 children were born in Ipswich and baptized in Rowley. Joseph, Thomas, Eleazer and Sarah were all baptized on 23 Nov 1673, and birth dates for Eleazer and Sarah are unknown, so the baptism date gives an upper limit. [JA, pp. 27-8]
