Adelbert Calvin HUNTLEY was born about 1846-8, probably in Dryden, Lapeer County, MI, the son of Erwin HUNTLEY and Cynthia BARTLETT. The records of his birth are ambivalent. His sister, Aldura, was born about 2 years later.

Adelbert appeared with his parents, at age 4, in the 1850 Census, under his middle name, Calvin. This is also on the Ervin HUNTLEY page. There is significant overlap between the two pages.

In 1850, Irwin/Erwin HUNTLEY was a Farmer, with real estate valued at $100. Cinthia/Cynthia was about 2 years older, and she was born in Upper Canada. See the Erwin HUNTLEY page.

In 1860, Irwin HUNTLEY was a Farmer, with real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate $250. This time "Lower Canada" is spelled out, but Cynthia's birth date is moved ahead 3 years.

Kent and Ionia Counties in Michigan, 1897. Grattan is in Kent County, near the Ionia (not Ionio) county line. The village of Grattan or Grattan Center is no longer incorporated, but Grattan Township still exists.

At age 17, Adelbert HUNTLEY enlisted as a Private in Company D, 1st Regiment, Engineers and Mechanics, Michigan, on 23 Dec 1863. He was promoted to the rank of Artificer (although some sources say that Artificer is a job title, not a rank), and was discharged on 25 Sep 1865, having served 1 year, 9 months and 3 days. At age 19, he was already a veteran and a skilled craftsman.

The Civil War service record, shown above, was published about 1915, and indicates that Adelbert was in Wilberton, Indian Territory at that time.

The 1890 Veteran's Schedule indicates that he suffered from dyspepsia (indigestion). As fellow suffers can attest, this can be a serious condition. I may have inherited this from Adelbert, as I used to take large amounts of antacid, and the invention of modern drugs to reduce stomach acids has greatly improved my life. I wish this had been available for Adelbert.

Adelbert HUNTLEY married Lydia Lusena/Lucena "Sena" CLOSE on 19 Aug 1868 in Grattan Township, Kent County, Michigan. He was 22, she was 17.

Counties in southern Michigan

The HUNTLEY family lived on a farm in Lapeer County in 1850, then Ionia County in 1860, and Kent County in 1870. The boundaries of these 3 counties have not changed since they were formed, in the 1830s.

Adelbert was a Farmer in 1870, with real estate valued at $3,200 and personal estate $1,060. It is strange that he was listed first, before his parents, and that he was the property owner. Adelbert has been called Albert, and the name transcribed as Susana looks like this:

The 1870 Directory of Kent County has both Adelbert, and his father Erwin, living in or near the town of Grattan Center. I don't know what "11 Grattan" means. In 1876, Adelbert and Erwin were operating a general store, in Grattan Center.

The 1880 Census has them still in the same township as in 1870. They now have 5 daughters. I think this is the same family, although Andrew (male) has become Audrie (female). Adelbert's parents were born in Michigan and Canada. Adelbert has taken up a trade as a Wagon Maker.

In 1880, Adelbert C. HUNTLEY ran for Register of Kent County, and lost.

[HKC, p. 222]

The 1881 Directory for Kent County, MI says that Adelbert C. HUNTLEY was County Clerk, 1879-81.

Between 1881 and 1884, Adelbert and family moved again, this time to Petoskey, Emmet County.

Emmet County is in the northern tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

In the Michigan Western, 1884 Directory, Adelbert was running a general store in Petoskey, which was called "Eddy & Huntley", and Erwin had become proprietor of a skating rink in Petoskey.

PETOSKEY. March 11.—[Special.]—A year ago the Democrats astonished themselves by winning a victory in this hitherto Republican stronghold; to-day in the village election that victory has been grandly outdone, the entire ticket being elected by increased majorities, notwithstanding the combination of the Republicans and Prohibition forces. The ticket is as follows: Village President, John G. Hill; Village Trustees, Burt H. Cook, William Birkett, Frank Wegemer; Village Clerk, Adelbert C. Huntley; Village Treasurer, George Brown; Village Assessor, Matthew F. Guinor, Street Commissioner, Thomas Hyst; Constable, Thos. A. Hice, Jr.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, MI) Tuesday, 12 Mar 1889, page 4

Adelbert was elected as Clerk in Bear Creek Township Emmet County, just a week after his wife died. Three years later, he was elected Village Clerk in Petoskey.

The 1890 Veterans Schedule listed Adelbert C. Huntley, placing him in Petoskey, MI in 1890. Also, he co-owned a shoe store in Petoskey, listed in the 1891-2 Michigan State Gazetteer (see below).

Some time between 1891 and 11 Mar 1895, Adelbert relocated from Petoskey, Michigan to Baxter County, Arkansas. I don't know if any of the children from his first marriage went with him, but they were not in his household in the 1900 Census. Adelbert remarried in 1895, and started a second family.

Phebe Alice (FISHER) HUNTLEY and Adelbert Calvin HUNTLEY
[Thanks to JoAnn (HIRHAGER) RENELLO for the photo.]

In 1900, Adelbert was a Coal Miner. Why anyone would go from running a general store in Michigan to mining coal in Arkansas, I have no idea. We learn that Alice and her parents were born in Indiana.

The 1910 Census verifies that Adelbert and Alice have been married 15 years, it is Adelbert's second marriage, and Alice has had only the 2 children listed. Adelbert D is David A, so his full name is Adelbert David HUNTLEY. Adelbert C. HUNTLEY is now a Farmer, with a rented farm, and his son Adelbert D. HUNTLEY is a Farm Laborer. Both children have attended school within the past year.

Isel A. HUNTLEY married William Ezra MARTIN on 24 Jan 1915 in Yell County, AR. Isel's residence at that time was Havana, Yell, AR, and since she was 17, that was probably her parents' residence as well. Her family story is continued on the William Ezra MARTIN page.

As mentioned above, Adelbert's Civil War service record, published about 1915, indicates that he was in Wilberton, Indian Territory at that time. Wilberton is about 60 miles southwest of Fort Smith, AR.

By 1920 Adelbert had moved back to Michigan, where he had a mortgaged house at 937 Sherman, Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI. The ages in this record are a little off. Adelbert C. HUNTLEY is a laborer at a factory, unspecified. His son Adelbert David HUNTLEY is a laborer at a biscuit factory. Alice's mother is living with them. Her name is not FISHER, so she must have remarried, but is now widowed. We learn that Sarah's parents were born in Michigan and Indiana.

Adelbert C. Huntley, Certificate of Death

The death record for Adelbert C. HUNTLEY has a few mistakes. He could not have been born in 1849, since he enlisted in the Civil War in 1863. If he was born 20 Mar 1849, and died 9 Mar 1923, he would have been 73 years, 11 months, 17 days, not 74 years, 11 months, 10 days. The birthplace looks like Lapeer County, MI. His mother was born in Canada, not MI. His father was Erwin Adelbert HUNTLEY, usually called Erwin or Irwin. Hopefully the date and place of death are correct. He died on 9 Mar 1923, in Poplar Bluff, Butler County, MO.

His gravestone is in Woodlawn Cemetery, Poplar Bluff, MO. Parts of the stone are difficult to read, but it does confirm his service in the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He is named Albert on the stone, and that mistake puts the other information in question. The death date is illegible, and the birth date is 22 Mar 1849 or 7.

Detail on the gravestone of Adelbert HUNTLEY. Is the date 1849 or 1847?

In 1930 Alice and her son Adelbert had an apartment at 2424 Monroe Street, Chicago. They paid $25/month in an apartment building with 4 apartments. Adelbert was a laborer for a railroad. Curiously, Adelbert was 33 and single, and his age at first marriage was 34. Maybe he was engaged?

In 1940 Adelbert David HUNTLEY and his mother Alice are found in Houston, Texas. They rent an apartment for $25/month at 7028 Harrisburg. (There is now a 7028 Harrisburg Boulevard in the Greater East End neighborhood of Houston.) The census has a couple of mistakes: Alice is Adelbert's mother, not his wife. She is widowed, not single. Her age is 79, not 69.

Adelbert is called a Carpenter in 1940, but has been unemployed for at least the past year. They also have a Lodger, a 19-year-old Painter, D. H. MARTIN. This is probably a relative of Adelbert's brother-in-law, William E. MARTIN. All 3 had listed Searcy County, Arkansas as their residence in 1935.

Adelbert Calvin HUNTLEY was definitely a jack-of-all-trades. He served as an Artificer in an Engineering Regiment during the Civil War, and at age 19, he was already a veteran and a skilled craftsman. In 1870 he was a farmer, and owner of a large farm. By 1876 he ran a general store, with his father. In 1880 he was a wagon maker, and in 1884 he was a partner in another general store. In 1879-81 he was a county clerk, and then a clerk for his village in the late 1880s. In 1900 he was a coal miner, and in 1910 he was again a farmer. In 1920, at age 74, he was still not retired, but working in a factory. He lived in several places in Michigan, then Arkansas, then back to Michigan, and spent his last days in southeastern Missouri. He started a second family after his first wife died and her children were grown. Quite a life!

Migration Summary

Adelbert Calvin HUNTLEY was born about 1846 in Lapeer County, MI. Between 1850 and 1860 his family moved from Lapeer, MI to Ionia, MI. He served in the Civil War 1863-5. He married (1) Lydia Lucena "Sena" CLOSE on 19 Aug 1868 in Kent, MI, and they had 7 children. They lived in Kent, MI in 1870 and 1880, and between 1880 and 1884 they moved to Petoskey, Emmet, MI. Sena died 30 Mar 1886 in Emmet, MI. Adelbert moved to AR some time between 1891 and 1895.

Adelbert married (2) Phebe Alice FISHER on 11 Mar 1895 in Marion, AR. They lived in Jenny Lind Township, Sebastian County, AR in 1900, and Boone Township, Logan County, AR in 1910. In 1915 Adelbert (presumably with Phebe) was in Wilberton, Indian Territory (now OK), and by 1920 they had moved to Grand Rapids, Kent, MI. Adelbert died on 9 Mar 1923, and is buried in Poplar Bluff, MO.

It does not appear that any of Adelbert's children from his first marriage accompanied him to AR. One might wonder if the Adelbert C. HUNTLEY who had 7 children in MI was the same one who married Phebe Alice FISHER in AR. But the connection between Adelbert, father of Isel, and Adelbert, son of Erwin and Cynthia, is pretty solid, and backed up by DNA evidence. Several of my close DNA matches are descendants of Erwin's father, Enoch HUNTLEY. On the other hand, Adelbert in MI was an entrepreneur, and Adelbert in AR showed none of these tendencies. Also, I have not found any close matches who are descendants of Adelbert and his first wife, Lusena. So it's a mystery.

Children of Adelbert and Lusena, at the time of Adelbert's 2nd marriage:
1. Audrey (26) was married, and lived in Petoskey until moving to Los Angeles in 1909.
2. Maud (22) was married, and stayed in MI until at least 1910, eventually moving to Pasadena, CA.

3. Vada (21) married later in 1895, stayed in Petoskey, then moved to Los Angeles between 1910 and 1915.
4. K
ittie (19) was married, but died in childbirth, in Grattan, on 17 May 1895, just 2 months after her father remarried.
5. Vea (17) probably stayed with one of her older sisters, Audrey or Vada, until she was married in 1899, then lived in Wilmette, IL, then Philadelphia, PA, then Los Angeles.
6. Converse (12) died at age 17 in Emmet County, MI.
7. Lusena (almost 9) probably went to live with her sister Vea, who was in Chicago in 1900, and moved to Wilmette, Cook, IL between 1905 and 1908. Lusena married in 1910 and soon moved to IA, settling in Ames. Her husband died young, in 1933, and she was in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA in 1955, but eventually came back to IA and lived in West Des Moines.

Phebe Alice FISHER was born 18 Dec 1861 in Martin, IN. Her father was killed in the Civil War, on 3 Oct 1862, and her mother remarried. Phebe and her brother Joseph lived with their mother, stepfather and step-siblings in 1870, Martin, IN. By 1880 this family had moved to Richland, IL. In 1930, Phebe lived with her son, Adelbert Jr, in Chicago, and in 1940 they lived in Houston, TX. She died on 30 May 1945, in Manteno, Kankakee, IL, at age 83.

Adelbert and Phebe Alice had 2 children:
1. Adelbert David HUNTLEY b. 14 Dec 1895 in Lone Rock, Baxter, AR, and
2. Isel A. HUNTLEY b. 30 Aug 1897, somewhere in AR. They appeared in 1900 in Sebastian, AR and 1910 in Logan, AR. Isel A. HUNTLEY married William Ezra MARTIN on 24 Jan 1915 in Havana, Yell, AR.

By 1920 Adelbert and Phebe Alice had moved back to Michigan, and in the 1920 US Census they were in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI, along with their son Adelbert Jr, and Phebe Alice's mother, Sarah.

Adelbert died in Poplar Bluff, Butler, MO on 9 Mar 1923. His widow, Phebe, lived with her son, Adelbert Jr. They were in Chicago, IL in 1930 and in Houston, TX in 1940. Phebe Alice (FISHER) HUNTLEY died on 30 May 1945, in Manteno, Kankakee, IL, at age 83.

This death record tells us several things. The birth date of 18 Dec 1861 is near the dates obtained from the censuses and marriage record. The birthplace is Lagota, Indiana, instead of just Indiana. We now have death and burial dates and places. Perhaps most importantly, we have the names of her parents: David FISHER and Sara Ann KELLER.

I have not found Lagota, Indiana. However, there is a Ladoga, Indiana, in the west central part of the state. The Lakota Indians also lived in Indiana, so maybe that is the origin of the name. However, it seems most likely that Lagota refers to Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana.

1. Audrey L. HUNTLEY was born in Jan 1869, in MI, and died 11 May 1966 in Los Angeles, CA. She married Levi Burt COLE on 6 Jul 1892, in Petoskey, Emmet, MI. Levi Bert COLE was born 26 Nov 1865 in Greenville, Montcalm, MI, and died 21 Dec 1957 in Los Angeles, CA. Audrey and Bert lived to age 97 and 92.

Marriage Date: 6 Jul 1892
Marriage Place: Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan, USA
Residence Place: Petoskey
Father: L W Cole
Mother: Pauline Oliver
Spouse: Audrey L Huntley
Record Number: 431

In 1900, Audrey and her family are still in Petoskey, although her father has gone to Arkansas. Levi Bert and Audrey H. COLE have a home, free of Mortgage, at 425 State Street, Petoskey. They seem to share the address, but not dwelling number, with James WRIGHT. Audrey seems to be using Huntley as a middle name, so her middle initial has changed from L to H. By occupation Levi Bert COLE is a "City Treasurer".

Living with the family are Bert's mother, Pauline COLE, widowed, and his brother, Herschell F. COLE, a Tobacco Salesman, single. Also Audrey's sister, Lecena (must be Lucena) COLE, also single. Lucena was born after the 1880 Census, so we add at least one more to the list of children of Lucena (CLOSE) HUNTLEY. In fact, Lucena died on 30 Mar 1886, so she must have died giving birth to her namesake, or shortly after.

The 1900 Census tells us that Audrey has had 1 child, still living in 1900. However, this child is not present. Pauline COLE has had 5 children, with 3 still living. The domestic servant, Agatha SANBORN, was 21, born in Michigan. Her mother was born in Canada (Eng), which I suppose means the English part of Canada.

Burt COLE had a "Men's Furnishing's" business at 403 Lake St in Petoskey, advertised in the 1903 directory. In 1909 the COLE family moved to Los Angeles.

In 1910 Bert and Audrey had a rented home at 1011 Grand View St, Los Angeles, CA. Bert was a Salesman at a "Mens Sur Co." Audrey had had 3 children, with 2 still living in 1910. So the child born before 1900, who was living but not in the household in 1900, had died by 1910.

In 1920 Burt and Audrey had a rented home at 2053 West 29th St, Los Angeles. Burt was manager of a laundry supply store. Next door, at 2057 West 29th St, the SOMERS family owned a home, with mortgage. Pearl A. SOMERS was a widow, and her son, William SOMERS, was an electrician.

South Pasadena Review (South Pasadena, CA)
24 Dec 1957, page 1

Helen, wife of William SOMERS, must have died or divorced William, because Elburta COLE married him on 11 Mar 1925 in Los Angeles.

The 1937 directory had Burt L and Audrey H COLE at 833 Burnside Ave, Los Angeles. The 1938 directory had Albt B and Audrey COLE at the same address.

The 1940 US Census has Levi Burt COLE, owner of a home valued at $6,500 at 833 Burnside Ave, Los Angeles. He was 74, occupation: Collector, industry: (laundry) linen supply. Audrey had no occupation.

Converse COLE worked for the Mack International Motor Truck Corp in Glendale, CA, according to his WWII draft card, dated 14 Feb 1942.

The 1962 directory for Pasadena, CA has:

The 1900 US Census has Charles and Maud in a rented home at 632 Shiawassee St, Lansing, MI. They had 1 daughter, and a servant. Charles was a "Clerk for Grate" according to transcription by Ancestry. The Gr is unclear, so let's call it "Clerk for ??ate".

Today, Shiawassee Street is a main thoroughfare in central Lansing. It is divided into East and West parts by the Grand River. The Census doesn't say if it's East or West, but the next street listed is Dorance Place, which is close to 632 East Shiawassee St.

The 1905 directory for Lansing, MI has Charles L and Maud H SMITH residing at 426 Townsend. Charles was a clerk at Aud Genl. The family moved to Detroit, MI between 1905 and 1910.

From Emmet County, MI Marriage Records, Vada H. HUNTLEY married Richard F. DILLON on 1 Oct 1895.

Richard Fay DILLON was born on 4 Sep 1866 in Ann Arbor, MI, the son of Richard C. DILLON and Susian FAY, both born in New York. He died on 17 Feb 1926, in Detroit, MI, at the age of 59. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Coil Unit, Ford Motor Co. The cause of death was angina pectoris. He was survived by his wife, Vada H. DILLON. This information is from his death certificate.

In 1900 there were 3 childless families living at 113 Mitchel Street, Petoskey, MI. A widow, Susan F. DILLON owned the home, free of mortgage. Mathew and Sarah GURNER were renters. Richard F. and Vada H. DILLON were also renters. It seems likely that Richard F. DILLON was the son of Susan F. DILLON.

Susan F. DILLON has had 3 children, with 2 still living in 1900. Sarah N. DILLON has had one child, no longer living. Vada H. DILLON has not had any children. Mathew F. GURNER is an Attorney, and Richard F. DILLON is a Printer.

The couple is still in Petoskey, still childless, in 1910. They have a mortgaged home at 614 Harvey St. Richard Fay DILLON is a Printer at a newspaper office.

The 1915 Directory for San Diego, CA has Richard F. and Vada H. DILLON at 1228 Bway. Richard is a Compositor at Frye & Smith. They must have moved from Petoskey to San Diego between 1910 and 1915, and then to Detroit by 1926.

Kathleen "Kittie" HUNTLEY

Biography of Ernest E. Lessiter

Earnest E. Lessiter, brother to the last treated subject, and a young and enterprising merchant of Grattan Center, was born on the old homestead on the 4th of December, 1868. In the union schools at Grattan Center he received his primary education, and in addition to this took a course in the West Michigan Business college at Grand Rapids, with the class of 1890. In January, 1891, Mr. Lessiter went into the mercantile business at Grattan by purc hasing a half interest with M. Byrne in a store of general merchandise, drugs and sundries. A little afterwards he bought Mr. Byrne's interest and continued until 1894, when he consolidated with George Whitten, and for three years the " Grattan Mercantile company" was widely known. At the end of that time he bought out his partner's share and has since controlled the entire business. In June, 1898, he erected a commodious building for his business, with large French plate glass front, and now carries a full stock of dry goods, shoes, rubber goods, drugs, oils, and staple groceries.

On December 20, 1893, Mr. Lessiter married Miss Kitty J. Huntley, to whom one daughter was born, by name Ketty Lynette. Mrs. Lessiter was a native of Michigan, born in 1875, and educated in the schools of Petoskey. She was a daughter of Adelbert C. and Lucena (Close) Huntley, and was deeply mourned at her call from this life on May 17, 1895, eighteen months after her marriage.

Mr. Lessiter is very firm in his support of the democratic party. He was elected to the office of township clerk in 1892 and re-elected in 1893. In 1896 and 1897 he held the station of school inspector of the Grattan schools, and in 1897 and 1898 served as township treasurer, all of which testify to the confidence and esteem in which he is held by his people. During the administration of President Cleveland, he was appointed postmaster of Grattan. Socially, Mr. Lessiter is connected with the following fraternities: Grattan Masonic lodge, No. 196, of which he is senior deacon; the Fortuna K. of P. lodge at Belding, Mich.; the Foresters, No. 986, at Grattan; the Ancient Order of Gleaners and the Order of the Eastern Star at Grattan.

Mr. Lessiter is an enterprising merchant, and holds a high place among his fellows. He has always been deeply interested in the welfare and advancement of his county, and in all the relations of life has been found true and faithful to the trust reposed in him and the obligations resting upon him. His early life has been well spent, and he commands the regard of men, by reason of his sterling qualities of mind and heart.

[GRK, p. 845]

Kathleen HUNTLEY died in childbirth, on 17 May 1895, in Grattan. She was just 19 years, 8 months and 16 days old, so her birth date was 1 Sep 1875. She been married almost 17 months. Her child, Kitty Lynnette LESSITER, lived to age 32.

Vea Adelle HUNTLEY married Samuel Freeland DIBBLE on 14 Aug 1899 in Emmet County, Michigan. She was 21, and he was 27. Samuel was born 1 Sep 1871 in Genesee County, MI, son of George E DIBBLE and Sarah E DAYTON. The 1898 Chicago city directory has Samuel F. DIBBLE, a salesman, employed at 1047 Monadnock blk, and residing at 434 Dearborn av. This must have been his home before marriage. He had attended the University of Michigan from 1889 to 1891.

By Jun 1900 the young couple was living in Chicago, renting a room with the McGILL family.

In 1900 the James M. McGILL family had a mortgaged home at 4547 Lake Avenue, Chicago. This is in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, next to a large industrial area. James McGILL was the County Treasurer, and his son Ruel was an Assistant (illegible). Samuel is a Traveling Salesman, I think. (The transcriber at Ancestry has it as Traveling Laborer.)

Vea and Samuel had 2 children. Huntley Dayton DIBBLE was born 13 Mar 1905 in Chicago, IL, and Elizabeth DIBBLE was born 8 Oct 1908 in Wilmette, Cook, IL. So they moved from Chicago to Wilmette between those dates.

The 1910 Census has Samuel and Vea living in a mortgaged home at 924 Green Wood Ave, Wilmette, IL. Today this is a nice upper-middle class neighborhood, about 1500 ft from Lake Michigan. Samuel was a Dept. Manager at General Electric. They had 2 small children, and a domestic servant.

Their daughter, Elizabeth, died at age 2, in Wilmette, and was buried in Ann Arbor, MI.

The 1920 US Census has Samuel, Vea and their son Huntley in Philadelphia. They had a rented apartment at 7280 Cresheim Road, in the Mt Airy neighborhood, NW Philadelphia. Samuel was a District Manager at GE. So apparently he was moving up in the company!

Huntley Dayton DIBBLE enrolled in Princeton University. The 1925 yearbook has him listed in the Freshman Class, with home address 521 West Mt Airy Ave, Philadelphia, PA. The 1926 yearbook has him listed as a Sophomore, with the same address. The 1927 yearbook has him in the Class of 1927, listed as deceased. He was a member of the Key and Seal Club.

Huntley died on 4 Feb 1926, of a heart attack, after exercising at Cuyler Hall, Princeton. (See the Philadelphia Enquirer (Philadelphia, PA) Friday, 5 Feb 1926, page 1.) He is buried alongside his sister, Elizabeth, in Forest Hill Cemetery, Ann Arbor, MI. It is strange to find them buried in MI (at least their gravestones are there), when they died in IL and PA. The only connection with Ann Arbor, MI is that Samuel's parents lived there, and are buried in the same cemetery. In fact Samuel's mother died on 20 May 1926, in Detroit, just a few months after her grandson.

The death records of the Second Presbyterian Church, Germantown, PA list the name, residence, date of death, and place of burial.

Sadly, Samuel and Vea outlived their 2 children by decades. I have not found them in the 1930 US Census. At some point they moved to Hollywood, CA, where Samuel was a Collector for the Chamber of Commerce. (I assume that means he was a tax collector?) They both appeared as Republicans on the 1932 voter list for Los Angeles County, with address 1616 Sherbourne dr.

In 1934 they took a month-long trip to Honolulu, HI, on the S. S. Malolo, departing Los Angeles on 17 Feb 1934, arriving in Honolulu on 22 Feb 1934. The return trip, also on the Malolo, departed Honolulu on 10 Mar 1934, arriving in Los Angeles on 17 Mar 1934. They traveled first class.

6. Converse HUNTLEY was born on 16 Aug 1882, in Michigan, and died 2 days after his 17th birthday, on 18 Aug 1899, in Resort, Emmet, Michigan. The cause of death was appendicitis, according to the death certificate. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Converse CLOSE, one of the original settlers of Kent County, Michigan. His father had moved to Baxter County, AR between 1890 and 1895, and Converse was probably left in Petoskey with one of his sisters, Audrey or Vada, who were still there, with their families.

7. Lusena M. HUNTLEY was born on 20 Mar 1886 or 7 in Petoskey, Emmet, MI, and died in Sep 1977 in West Des Moines, Polk, IA. Her mother, Lusena CLOSE, died giving birth to her. Her father stayed in Petoskey until at least 1890, but then appeared in Baxter County, AR in 1895, where he remarried. There is no indication that any of Lusena's older siblings went to AR with their father. Lusena was the only one still a minor in 1900, and she lived with her sister Audrey and family at 425 State St, in Petoskey. The 1903 Petoskey city directory has Lusena M. HUNTLEY, student, boarding at 437 State. After 1903 Lucena probably went to live with her sister Vea, who was in Chicago in 1900, and moved to Wilmette, Cook, IL between 1905 and 1908. I haven't found Lusena or her future husband in the 1910 US Census.

She married on 15 Aug 1910 in Wilmette, Cook, IL to Elmer Joseph ENGLEDINGER, born 31 Jan 1885 in Hedrick, IA, and died 10 Sep 1933 in Ames, Story, IA.

Elmer attended a business college in Quincy, IL, and Lusena was a nurse. I don't know the names of the schools they attended, or dates.

Lusena and Elmer had 3 sons: Harvey (10 May 1912), Karl (8 Apr 1917) and John (5 May 1923). Harvey was born in Alburnett, Linn, IA, incorporated in 1912. So the family must have been in Linn County for a brief time. Karl and John were both born in Ames, Story, IA. So they were in Ames by 1917, where Elmer was employed in the banking business by 1918.

Elmer was a banking executive, starting as a bank president in Alburnett, Linn, IA before 1912, and then as cashier at a bank in Arlington, Fayette, IA. In 1916 he moved to Ames, Story, IA, purchased the Commercial Savings Bank, and became its president. The bank merged with Union National Bank in 1928, with Elmer as cashier. Then this larger bank merged with the Story County Trust and Savings Bank in 1932, with Elmer as executive vice president. He was a leading citizen in Ames, active in fundraising for charities, and with local schools, and the Masons.

Note: The Cashier of a bank in this context was not a bank teller, but rather the person responsible for receiving and disbursing money. In modern language, this position would be titled Comptroller.

Elmer's WWI draft card was dated 12 Sep 1918. They lived at 807 Duff, Ames, and Elmer worked at the Commercial Savings Bank, at 316 Main St, Ames.

In 1920 the ENGELDINGERs have a rented home at 816 Hodge Ave, in Ames, Iowa. Elmer ENGELDINGER is a Bank President. I can't tell if Karl's age is 2 and 0/12 or 2 and 9/12.

In 1925 E. J. Engeldinger owned a home valued at $6,000, free of mortgage, at 715 Grand Avenue, Ames, Iowa. Lusina had been through 12th grade, and E. J. also had 2 years of college. Lusena had been in Iowa for 13 years, so she arrived about 1912. The family was affiliated with the Congregational Church. The census also gives information about the parents.

Elmer was active in politics, and was named as a delegate to the Story County Republican Convention in 1930. The Great Depression had begun, and it must have been a difficult time for a banker.

The 1930 US Census has the family living at 715 Seventh Street, Ames. Elmer owns the home, valued at $8,000, and a radio. They were at 715 Grand Ave in 1925, so I wonder if the street had been renamed.

Union National Bank and Story County Trust and Savings Bank Are Merged

Union Story Trust and Savings Bank With $1,500,000 Resources Will Open for Business Saturday

A new bank, the Union Story Trust and Savings bank, will begin business in Ames Saturday morning, January 2.

It will be a new bank, organized with $125,000 in new money by men who have long been connected with the financial and business interests of Ames. Its officers will be men of long experience in Ames banking affairs.

The new institution is the product of a consolidation of the Union National bank and the Story County Trust and Savings bank, two strong Ames banks, and climaxes a program of close co-operation between them for the past two years. Plans for the merger have been considered carefully during that period and it was decided this week by men connected prominently with the directorates of both banks that the proper time for the consolidation had arrived. Thru the aid of the Iowa State Banking department, the new institution was set up, the acceptable assets of the two old banks were taken over and the new bank will open for business Saturday morning.

Capital, Surplus $125,000

Capital of the Union Story Trust and Savings bank will be $100,000. Initial surplus will be $25,000. Resources, which will include the deposits of the two old banks, will be over $1,500,000.

Dr. Earl Rice, president of the new bank, was president of the Union National bank during the past year and was an officer of the Commercial Savings bank before its merger with the Union National on January 1, 19??. He is prominent professionally in the community and is a large property owner.

A. H. Munn, one of the vice presidents of the new bank, is president of the Munn Lumber company, is an officer of the Ames Building and Loan association and has long been an officer and director of both merged banks.

Is Executive Head

E. J. Engeldinger, vice president, has been engaged in the banking business in Ames since 1916, first as president of the Commercial Savings bank and, since its merger with the Union National, as cashier of the Union National. Mr. Engeldinger will be the managing executive of the new bank.

A. J. Martin and D. W. Atkinson, vice presidents of the Union National bank, will retain their positions in the new bank. Mr. Martin came to Ames a number of years ago to become associated with the Union National. He is a member of the Ames school board. Mr. Atkinson, former executive head of a bank at Jamaica, Ia., became vice president of the Union National bank five years ago.

Frank H. Schleiter, cashier of the new bank, has been cashier of the Story County Trust and Savings bank since it was organized in 1916. He is now serving his third successive term as mayor of Ames.

Directors of the new bank are men prominent in the business and financial affairs of the city. They are W. T. Barr, C. F. Curtiss, M. L. Hart, George Judisch, C. G. Lee, M. A. Manning, L. W. McElyes, S. W. Needham, N. L. Nelson, C. J. Lynch, Dr. Earl Rice, A. H. Munn, E. J. Engeldinger and F. H. Schleiter.

Complete Staffs Retained

The presonnel of the officers, other than the president, vice presidents and cashier, has not been named but will be chosen soon by the directors. The complete personnel of officers and employes of both old banks will be on the staff of the new institutions and will be in their accustomed places, ready to greet their old friends, when the bank opens Saturday morning.

The banking rooms of the Union National bank, traditionally associated with Ames financial affairs since the days of the venerable W. M. Greeley, will be the home of the new institution. Equipment of the Story County Trust and Savings bank will be used as needed. The service offered by the new bank will be complete in every respect, backed by unquestioned financial stability.

The merger of the Union National and Story County Trust and Savings banks is in line with the accepted practice in banking circles thruout the country. Resources will be larger than possible for two separate banks, overhead will be lower, service more efficient and stability will be assured.

Officers and directors, gathered at the home of the new bank Thursday night, expressed the feeling that they had taken steps to give Ames an institution commensurate with the contemplated growth of the community and able to meet any banking needs of its customers.

Elmer Joseph ENGELDINGER died on 10 Sep 1933 in Ames, of a heart attack after playing gold. He was 48. His death was quite a shock, and made front page headline news in the local newspaper. His wife was 47, and his sons were 21, 16 and 10.

In 1935, Lusena was working as a secretary for Dr. H. L. GULDEN, an osteopath, practicing at 318 ½ Main St, Ames. Recall that Elmer's bank was at 314 Main St. It is interesting that she was a secretary, but I'm sure her skills as a nurse were useful.

Ames Daily Tribune (Ames, IA) 25 Jul 1935 page 2

Lusena eventually joined her 4 sisters in Los Angeles County, CA. She registered as a Republican in 1948, 1950 and 1952 with the address 108 N. Oakhurst Drive, between Beverly Hills and Beverly Grove. The 1955 Beverly Hills Directory says she was a nurse.

Del enlisted in the US Navy on 13 Aug 1917, and served until 31 Jan 1919. At the time he registered for the draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was single, living in Sallisaw, OK, and working on his own farm.

In the first section on this page, we saw that Adelbert D. HUNTLEY was with his family at age 4 in the 1900 US Census for Jenny Lind, Sebastian, AR and age 14 in the 1910 US Census for Boone, Logan, AR. When he came back from WWI, the family had moved to Grand Rapids, Kent, MI, and he joined them there in the 1920 US Census. In 1930 and 1940, he lived with his widowed mother in Chicago.

On 8 Nov 1939 Adelbert filed for a Social Security card in Edinburgh, TX where he was employed by the Woolworth Company. Then on 23 Jul 1941 he registered as an employee at the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company, in Chicago, IL. His address at the latter date was 2546 W. Monroe St, Chicago. Recall that the apartment he shared with his mother in 1930 was at 2424 Monroe St. So he had come back to the same area.

The WWII draft registration for Adelbert is not dated, but it says his age is 46, which puts it between 15 Dec 1942 and 14 Dec 1943. This record also has his address as 2546 W. Monroe St. Under "Person Who Will Always Know Your Address" he lists Mrs. William E. MARTIN, at the same address. This is his sister, Isel A. (HUNTLEY) MARTIN. The 1940 US Census shows the Willam E. MARTIN family, at this address.

In 1947 Del was living with his sister Isel and her son, Wayne MARTIN, at 327 S Leavitt Street, Chicago. This is less than a mile from where they lived in 1940, at 2546 W Monroe St, Chicago.
