Eaton, James

James EATON (1797 - 1864) and Sarah LEE (1803 - 1888)

my 3g-grandparents

Summary

The parents of my gg-grandfather, Festus EATON, were James EATON and Sarah LEE. They raised their children in Broome County, NY, and then moved to Kane County, IL between 1850 and 1855, with several of their children. Their lives after 1850 are well documented, but before 1850, less is known. I have found Sarah LEE's parents, and have actually traced her ancestry back 10 more generations in some lines. However, James EATON is much harder to trace, and part of this page is devoted to that mystery.

Sara LEE was born about 1804 in NY, according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Censuses. Her death certificate (middle of this page) is more specific: she was born in Milburn, NY, daughter of Nathaniel Lee (born in Southwick, MA) and Sara French (born in Westfield, MA). Her daughter Elvira (EATON) SPENCER had stayed in Chenango, and Sarah went to live with the SPENCERs after the death of her husband. She died, according to the death certificate, 11 Dec 1988 [should be 1888] at age 85, and is buried in Glen Castle Cemetery, Town of Chenango, Broome County, NY. This agrees with the dates on her gravestone.

James EATON was born about 1798 in NH, according to the 1850 US Census, and about 1798 in NY, according to the 1860 US Census. His military record (below) tells us that he married Sarah LEE on 4 Jul 1824 in Binghamton, Broome, NY, and he died 8 Oct 1864 in Hampshire, Kane, IL. The gravestone for James EATON in North Plato Cemetery, Kane County, Illinois says that he died on 8 Oct 1864, at age 67 years, 7 months, and 12 days, which means his birth date is 24 Feb 1797. So he was 17 yrs 7 mos when he enlisted. As for his parents and siblings, all we know is that David, James and Reuben Eaton were among the first settlers around Dimmick Hill, near the border between Maine and Chenango Town(ship)s, Broome County, NY, well before 1830. [JWL, p. 20]

Another James EATON was born 19 Mar 1798 in Goffstown, Hillsborough, NH, to David and Betsy EATON. He married Rebecca GOULD, and they had 6 children, in Goffstown. He died on 20 Sep 1857, having lived his entire life in Goffstown. He is often conflated with our ancestor. [GPH, vol. 2, p. 139]

DNA Evidence

AncestryDNA gives me 8 close matches that independently trace their ancestry back to children of James and Sarah, including two descendants of Susan, and one each of Lucy, Jacob and Samuel. This provides good evidence that I am also a descendent.

War of 1812

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/eaton-james/James%20Eaton%20-%20War%20of%201812%20Pension%20Application%20Files%20Index%20-%20small.jpg

The pension application from James EATON's War of 1812 service was filed by his widow, Sarah, in 1882.

The document above gives James EATON's death date as 8 Oct 1864, so it refers to the same James EATON who was buried in Kane County. He served as a Private, in Captain William GREGG's Company, New Hampshire Militia, for 47 days in 1814, when he was almost 18. He enlisted for a 60-day period, but was discharged a few days early. His residence was listed as Jaffrey, NH. [RAG, p. 170] Jaffrey is a town in Cheshire County, which lies in the SW corner of NH.

Corporal Walter EATON, also from Jaffrey, enlisted on 2 Oct 1814 in Capt. Silas CALL's Company. He died on 14 Oct 1814. [RAG, p. 168] Both James and Walter were paid $11.20 for their service. [HCS, p. 227]

Marriage

James EATON and Sarah LEE were married on 4 Jul 1824, in Binghamton, Broome, NY, according to the pension application, above. James was 27 and Sarah about 20. They had 9 children in Chenango, Broome County, NY.

James (and Sarah, presumably) lived in Chenango until 1850, and they were in Kane County, IL in 1855, so the move took place between 1850 and 1855. Sarah moved back to Broome County, NY at some time after her husband's death, since that was her residence in 1882.

Ancestry of Sarah (LEE) EATON

Sarah LEE was born Aug 1803, in Milburn, NY. Milburn, Orange County, NY is now a small community, about 60 miles north and 10 miles west of New York City. I found it on Mapquest, but it doesn't appear in Google Maps or Wikipedia. I don't have any other records of the LEE family in Milburn, so I don't think they stayed there very long.

Ancestry of Sara (LEE) EATON. Click to enlarge.

I have not found the parents of James EATON, but I have traced the ancestry of Sara LEE extensively, with some lines going back more than 10 more generations. The chart above show the first 5. Most of the males in this chart have a page in their name, listed in the left column. (Sorry about the patriarchal organization.) Their ancestors came to New England from old England, primarily the counties of Essex, Suffolk and Cambridge.

EATONs in NY

Several EATONs appeared in Chenango County, NY (not to be confused with adjacent Chenango Town, Broome County), as early as 1800. At least some of them are related to the EATONS of Dedham, MA. In particular, "Some of the descendants of Ebenezer Eaton, live in Chenango County, N.Y." [NZRM, p. 159] The biography of Warren EATON, of Oxford, Chenango, NY says that he descends from Francis EATON, who came to Massachusetts on the Mayflower. [HJG, pp. 506-8]

An extended family of EATONS lived in Cherry Valley Township, Otsego County, NY. Most of them removed to Willett, Cortland County, NY about 1815. Louisa EATON married Seymour SANFORD, and they lived in Triangle, Broome County. Triangle and Willett share a border. (More information below.) The ancestry of Louisa is well established, but I have not found any hint of a connection to James.

David, James and Reuben Eaton were among the first settlers around Dimmick Hill, near the border between Maine and Chenango Town(ship)s, Broome County, NY, well before 1830. [JWL, p. 20] They may have been the first in the Dimmick Hill neighborhood, but not the first in Chenango, which was settled around 1790. In fact, Sarah LEE's grandparents were among the first in Chenango.

David EATON was the oldest of the three, and the first to appear in the census. In the 1820 US Census (below), he was already in Union Township, Broome County, NY. He was in the 26-44 category, so he was born between 1776 and 1794. He could have been the father of James, born in 1797.

So the question is: How is James EATON related to David, Reuben, and the other EATONs, if at all?

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/eaton-festus-m/Broome_county_ny_map.png

James EATON and his family lived near the village of Castle Creek, in the northwest corner of the Town of Chenango (8).

In 1830 there were 4 EATON households in Broome County: 2 in Chenango Town, and 2 in Union Town.

In 1830, David EATON was still in Union, Broome, NY, and he was joined by James and Reuben EATON in Chenango, Broome, NY. David was 40 to 49, so he was born approximately 1781 to 1790. David's wife was 30 to 39, born between 1791 and 1800. Comparing this with the 1820 Census, she was born between 1791 and 1794. Their oldest son and daughter had left home, age 20 to 25. The younger son was 15 to 19, born between 1811 and 1815. Of the 2 daughters who were under 10 in 1820, one was missing in 1830, and the other was 10 to 14, born 1816 to 1820. There was one more daughter, under 10, in 1830.

James EATON was 30 to 39 in 1830, born between 1791 and 1800, consistent with the other censuses. His wife Sarah was 20 to 29, born 1801 to 1810. Their 3 boys under 5 were there as expected, and the oldest girl must be Elvira (see below).

Reuben EATON was 20 to 29 in 1830, born between 1801 and 1810. It must be his wife who is 15 to 19, born 1811 to 1815. They had a daughter, under 5, born after 1825.

Luther J. EATON was probably the son of David EATON Jr. He had a young wife, and no children, in 1830.

The 1840 Census still has the families of David, James and Reuben EATON in Broome County. James and Sarah have 3 boys and 3 girls at home, consistent with the other censuses. James and Reuben are almost consecutive in the census, separated only by the Samul BROOKS and John BROOKS households. It looks like David Jr, James and Reuben were brothers, or perhaps cousins. David Jr was the oldest, born 1781-90. James was next, born 1791-1800. Youngest was Reuben, born 1801-10.

The household of James and Sarah EATON has 8 young people, probably their children. James was born about 1798 in New Hampshire, and Sarah about 1804 in New York. James is a farmer, but he does not own any land. He probably works on the large farm of Samuel BROOKS. [The transcriber at Ancestry.com has Susan's age as 7, but it is 17.]

I also suspect that Lucy BROOKS (1802), in the family next to James EATON in the 1850 Census, was his sister, and that Hannah EATON (1760) was their mother. I don't believe that James was the son of David and Betsy EATON, as many have conjectured.

Reuben EATON appeared in the 1850 US Census, still in Chenango, Broome, NY. This gives more specific information that we can compare with the previous censuses.

David EATON does not seem to appear in the 1850 US Census for Broome County. All we know about him and his family comes from the 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Censuses.

So far, we know that David EATON was born between 1781 and 1790, James EATON was born 24 Feb 1797 in NH or NY, and Reuben EATON was born about 1806 in NY. Lucy BROOKS was born about 1802 in NH.

Louisa (EATON) SANFORD b. 1814 [HPS, p. 526]

It seems that there were two Edwin EATONs in Broome County, both born about 1826 in NY. One was with his parents in Maine, Broome, NY (above). Another appeared with the Seymour SANFORD family in Triangle, Broome, NY. The biography of Seymour SANFORD appears in [HPS, pp. 526-7]. Here it is claimed that his wife was Louisa EATON, daughter of Peter EATON of Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY, son of Elijah EATON and Elizabeth MOTT. Surely all these EATONs are related somehow!

This 1855 map [click the map for a larger image, or follow the link at the bottom of the page for the full county map] shows the northwest corner of the Town of Chenango, and the northeast corner of the Town of Maine, in Broome County, NY. Two SPENCER properties can be seen near the top. Several FRENCH, HUNTLEY and LEE properties can be seen along Castle Creek Road, which runs north and south from Castle Creek Village to the Chenango River. The R. EATON and S. D. BROOKS properties are in the upper left, near the boundary between the Towns of Maine and Chenango. Presumably this is the general area where James EATON and family lived until 1853.

James EATON and family appeared in Illinois in 1855. [Comments in brackets are mine.]

Counties in Northeastern Illinois

An 1860 map shows a 120-acre farm under the name J. EATON in Section 21, Plato Township. The 80-acre farm of L. SEWARD is nearby, in Section 27. See the Festus EATON page for this.

Kane County was founded 16 Jan 1636. The west side of Kane became DeKalb County on 4 Mar 1837. The population was 16,703 in 1850, and 30,062 in 1860, so the EATONs came into a rapidly growing area. However, almost all of the population was in the cities along the Fox River, on the eastern side of the county. The center and west side were sparsely populated, and unimproved land was plentiful.

Homer Township was established on 6 Nov 1849. The name was changed to Plato Township on 2 Jul 1850.

https://sites.google.com/site/gapinskiancestry/home/eaton-james/KANE%201875.JPG

Kane County, Illinois, 1875. Plato Township (T 41 N, R 7 E) is in the north central part. Most of the population has always been near the Fox River, on the eastern side of the county.

In 1860, several members of the family appear in Plato, Kane, IL. James and Sarah EATON and their 3 youngest children are listed right after Festus EATON, living on his own, and Edmund EATON, who now has a family, a wife and with 5 children. The oldest child, James, must have been born just after the 1850 Census was taken, and John must have been born after the move to Illinois. Isadore is usually a boy's name, but here Isadore is a girl. For some reason, Festus is the owner of a very large farm, while his brother Edmund and father James have only small amounts of property. Curiously, James EATON's birthplace is New York. All other records indicate New Hampshire.

Gravestones

Sarah (LEE) EATON died on 11 Dec 1888, and is buried in Glen Castle Cemetery, in Binghampton, Broome, NY. Her gravestone says

SARAH
Wife of
JAMES EATON,
Died Dec 11, 1888.
Aged 85 yrs.

If accurate, this puts her birth date between 12 Dec 1802 and 11 Dec 1803. Let's call it 1803.

Sarah (LEE) EATON

The death certificate for Sarah (LEE) EATON was posted on Ancestry.com by Michael Ward. It contains the following information.

Name: Sarah Eaton, widow
Date of Death: December 11, 1988 [should be 1888]
Age: 85
Occupation: Housekeeper
Birthplace: Milburn, New York
Father: Nathaniel Lee - born in Southwick, MA
Mother: Sara French - born in Westfield, MA
Cause of Death: old age
Medical: A. F. Taylor, MD
Burial: Glen Castle Cemetery - Town of Chenango

This is the right Sarah EATON, because the maiden name of LEE, the death date, and cemetery name, match previous information. So now we have her birth town, and her parents, and their birth places. Sarah had come back to New Hampshire to live with her daughter, Elvira (EATON) SPENCER. She is found with the SPENCER family in the 1870 Census (see the section on Elvira, below). Some of the family trees online have Sarah LEE as a Native American, but I have not found any evidence to support this.

The ancestry of Sarah (LEE) EATON can be traced back several more generations. See the Nathaniel LEE page.

1. Elvira N. EATON was born in 1823, and died in 1892. Elvira, the oldest of James and Sarah's 9 children, is the only one who doesn't appear with them in the 1850 or 1860 Census, so she must be established by other means.

The James EATON household included a female in the 5-9 age group in 1830, and also a female in the 15-19 age group in 1840. She doesn't appear with the family in the 1850 or later censuses. So it is likely that there was a daughter born between 1821 and 1825, and Elvira fits. Also, later censuses (below) show that several EATONs appeared in the Philander SPENCER household, indicating a possible family connection.

Elvira married Philander B. SPENCER, probably before 1848. Their shared gravestone in Glen Castle Cemetery, Binghamton, Broome County, NY has their birth and death years engraved. Philander was born in May 1823, according to the 1900 US Census, and died 2 Feb 1905, according to the death record, below. Philander was a son of Phineas SPENCER and Eunice "Annis" BARNES.

New York, Death Index, 1880-1956
Name: Philander B Spencer
Death Date: 2 Feb 1905
Death Place: Castle Creek, New York, USA
Certificate Number: 4809

In 1850, Phineas SPENCER and his 3 sons were Farmers. Phineas owned real estate valued at $2,000. Elvira and her 2 children are listed, but her relationship to the family is not stated, but it looks like Philander and family are staying with his parents.

In the 1855 State Census, Phineas and Philander have separate, adjacent households. Both were Farmers, and Phineas was a Landowner. They had a servant and a child living with them. This census tells us how long each person had been a resident of Chenango. Phineas and Annis had been residents for 33 years, and both were born in Connecticut, so they came to Chenango about 1822. Phylander and his family have residence the same as their ages, so they were born in Chenango, or moved there as infants.

The 1855 map of the Castle Creek area, shown above, has a P. SPENCER property on the west side of Castle Creek. This could be Philander, but it is more likely his father, Phineas SPENCER.

In 1860 Philander B. SPENCER was a Farmer, with real estate valued at $5000 (or maybe $3000) and personal estate $400. He was supporting his parents, Phineas and Eunice SPENCER.

The 1873 Gazeteer [GTB, p. 210] has the following entry for Chenango Town: "Spencer. Philander B., (Castle Creek,) lot 116, G. D. B. P., farmer 200." The GDBP refers to the Grand Division of the Boston Purchase. [NVH] So Philander was owner of 200 acres, lot 116, in Castle Creek.

The evidence for Elvira SPENCER being Elvira EATON, daughter of James EATON and Sarah LEE, is indirect. James and Sarah had a daughter born between 1821 and 1825, so the age is about right. Sarah EATON, who appeared with the SPENCER family in the 1870 Census, is the right age and birthplace for Sarah (LEE) EATON. Another EATON was with the family in 1875. And they are all in Chenango.

2. Edwin EATON was born about 1827, in Broome County, New York, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. In 1850 Edwin was living with his parents, in Chenango. See the 1850 Census record, above.

By 1855 Edwin EATON had a wife, Emalin, and 2 children.

Recall that Edwin's sister Elvira was in family 278. Edwin is head of family 280. Next, family 281 is headed by Rheuben EATON, age 45, with a wife and 4 children.

There were several other Edwin EATONs, including another one in Broome County, the same age. I have lost track of the family after 1855.

3. Edmund W. EATON was born about 1828, in Broome County, NY, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. His wife was Susan E, born about 1831, in Chenango County, NY. They were probably married about 1850. They moved to Kane County, IL at about the same time as his parents, possibly traveling together. Edmund was killed in the Civil War, on 1 Apr 1865, leaving behind his wife and 7 children, who moved back to Chenango County.

1855 New York State Census for Plato Township, Kane County, IL
Head-of-Household: Edmund Eaton
Males under 10: 3 [James (5), Freeman (2), John (0)]
Males 10 to 20: 1 [?]
Males 20 to 30: 1 [Edmund (28)]
Females 20 to 30: 1 [Susan (24)]

The 1860 US Census finds Edmund, with a wife and 5 children, in Plato, Kane, IL next to his brother Festus in family 4896, and his father James and mother Sarah, with the younger children, in family 4897. Edmund must have moved his family to Illinois between 1853 and 1855, judging by the birthplaces of the children. Edmund had real estate valued at $100 and personal estate $100. For some reason his brother Festus was by far the wealthiest in the family. See the Festus EATON page.

New York, Registers of Officers and Enlisted Men
Mustered into Federal Service, 1861-1865
Name: Edmund W Eaton
Gender: Male
Birth Year: abt 1828
Enlistment Date: Sep 1864
Enlistment Place: Pitcher, Chenango, New York, USA
Age: 36
Death Date: 1 Apr 1865
Death Place: Cloves Hill
Death Age: 37
Rank: PVT
Regiment: 185th New York

Edmund W. EATON was killed in the Civil War. The record Deaths of Officers and Enlisted Men tells us that he was 37, married, with 7 children. He volunteered for the 185th New York Infantry in Sep 1864, at the rank of Private. Edmund was killed in battle on 1 Apr 1865, at Cloves Hill. I believe this is intended to be Clover Hill, near Culpeper, Virginia. This was not the scene of a major battle, but was the headquarters of Brigadier General George Armstrong CUSTER.

Another record indicates that he died on 29 Mar 1865, at Gravelly Run, a.k.a. the Battle of White Oak Road, in Dinwiddie County, VA. I suppose he was mortally wounded at Gravelly Run, and carried about 100 miles north to Clover Hill, where he died 3 days later.

Susan E. EATON, widow of Edmund W. EATON, applied for his pension on 7 Nov 1865. I'm not sure how to read this, but it looks like another application was made on 4 Mar 1871, on behalf of a minor, with guardian James C. GLADDING.

By 19 Jun 1865 Susan had moved her family back to New York, perhaps for family support. The 1865 Census tells us that she was once married, the mother of 7 children, now widowed, and a land owner. The first son's name is illegible, but it must be James. Second, Charles F in 1865 was Freeman in 1860. John F is John. Edwin is missing, and Frank F must be Isadore.

4. Festus/Phestus EATON was born about 1829, in Broome County, NY, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. He moved to Kane County, Illinois in the early 1850s, along with his parents and several siblings. He married Huldah SEWARD on 12 Jul 1862, in Kane County. Festus and Huldah were my gg-grandparents.

See the Festus EATON page.

5. Susan A. EATON was born 21 Jun 1833, in Broome County, NY, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. She appeared with her parents in the 1850 US Census, shown above. It may seem possible that the Susan in the 1850 census was Edmund's wife, who was also named Susan, about 2 years older. However, both Susans appeared in the 1860 census.

Susan A. EATON married Mortimer LEE on 6 Dec 1858, in Kane County, IL. Mortimer was 26 and Susan was 25. They were 1st cousins, as Mortimer was the son of Parley LEE, brother of Sara (LEE) EATON. Susan and Mortimer had both migrated, with their parents and siblings, from Broome County, NY to Kane County, IL, where they had at least 3 daughters.

Illinois, Marriage Index, 1851-1900

Spouse Name: Mortimer Lee
Marriage Date: 6 Dec 1858
Marriage County: Kane
Comments: This record can be found at the
County Court Records, Film # 1481107 - 1481109.

In 1860, newlyweds Mortimer and Susan had a house full. Rodeskie LEE was born before the marriage; she may be Mortimer's daughter by a previous marriage. Sarah EATON could be Susan's niece. Oroneus LEE is probably Mortimer's brother. Cris BINGLE is a farmhand, probably unrelated.

Mortimer LEE registered for the draft in Jun 1863, Hampshire, Kane, IL, at age 31.

Mortimer and Susan's oldest daughter, Nancy "Dusty" LEE, married and moved to Sedgwick County, KS about 1878. The 2nd daughter, Iona, married in Kane, IL in 1885, but soon moved to KS, as her name appeared in a List of Letters at the post office in Seneca, Nemaha, KS on 3 Jul 1886. Iona and her husband made there way to Sedgwick, KS, and lived the rest of their lives there. Mortimer and Susan were still in IL in 1880, but they went to Sedgwick County, KS by 1891, and both died there.

The gravestone of Mortimer LEE in Park Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Sedgwick, Kansas says he was born 20 May 1832 and died 24 Mar 1895. His wife Sarah (EATON) LEE is buried next to him. The gravestone photo is illegible, so I have to trust that it has been transcribed accurately. She was born on 21 Jun 1833 and died 8 Aug 1902.

Died.

Mrs. Alfred Pease died at 2:30 p. m. yesterday at her home eight miles south and two miles east of Newton. She was thirty-five years old. The interment took place at the Park cemetery in Sedgwick county to-day.

Mrs. Pease came here from Illinois thirteen years ago and has resided in this county ever since, a part of the time in this city, where her husband was engaged in draying. She was a good woman who is widely mourned.

6. Lucy EATON was born about 1839, in Broome County, New York, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. The evidence that she is Lucy YOUNG, wife of Wallace William YOUNG, comes from the records of their sons Edgar and John, which name their mother Lucy EATON. (See below.)

The gravestone of Lucy YOUNG in Boscobel Cemetery, Boscobel, Grant, WI is inscribed with her birth date, 8 Apr 1839, and death date, 1 Jul 1892. Her husband, Walace W. YOUNG was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, OH. His gravestone says he was born in 1837 and died in 1922.

In 1870 the family is found in Watterstown, a small village 6 miles east of Boscobel, in Grant County, southwestern WI. William (or Wallace) was a farmer, and owner of his farm. The age of Charles is unclear; it could be 18 or 10, but by comparison with other records, it is probably 10.

From the birth dates and places, it looks like the family was in IL during the American Civil War, and removed to WI between 1865 and 1867.

The wife of Wallace William YOUNG was Lucy, born 1838 or 9, in NY, according to the census records above. She was called Lucy EATON in the death record of Edgar Eugene YOUNG, the marriage record of John YOUNG, and the Social Security Claim of John William YOUNG. She was probably the same Lucy EATON who appeared in the James EATON household in the 1850 US Census for Maine, Broome, NY.

7. Jacob S. EATON was born in 1842, in Broome County, New York, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. He appeared with his parents in Broome County, NY in 1850, and also in Kane County, IL in 1860. He was still in Plato, Kane, IL when he registered for the draft on 1 Jul 1863.

8. Sarah EATON was born on 31 Aug 1843, in Broome County, New York, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. She moved to Plato, Kane, IL with her parents when she was about 10. She married William A. PEASE on 14 Aug 1864 in Kane County, and they lived in Plato. She died on 12 Jun 1925, at age 81, in Plato Center. They lived in Plato Center and had 9 children, only 3 of whom survived them.

William Augustus PEASE was born 18 Jul 1846, on a farm near Plato Center, and lived all his life near Plato Center, where he died at age 81, according to his obituary (below). So he died in 1927-8.

Sarah's death record (above) and her obituary (below) say she was born in Boone County, NY. There never has been a Boone County in New York, and her parents lived in Broome County, so I think that is her birthplace.

One William PEASE served 2 years in prison for burglary, 3rd degree. I'm not sure if this is the right one, but the connection with Broome County, NY is interesting. Although it seems that William spent his entire life in Plato, and Sarah was the one from Broome.

9. Samuel EATON was born in Aug 1845, in Broome County, New York, the son of James EATON and Sarah LEE. He was with his parents in Broome County, NY for the 1850 Census, and again with his parents in Kane County, IL for the 1860 Census.

I have not found Samuel EATON in the 1870 US Census. By 1875, he had moved back to Broome County, along with his brother Jacob EATON and sister Elvira SPENCER.

In 1875, Samuel was a Farmer and landowner.

In 1880, Samuel is listed next to his older sister, Elvira. Samuel and Lucy have 2 young children, and a 2-year-old nephew also lives with them. I don't know which sibling of Samuel is the parent of Elmer.

The 1900 Census finds Samuel and Lucy with one son at home. The record indicates that they have been married 28 years, so they married about 1872. Lucy has had 3 children, all still living. Clearly they are James, Sarah and Merton. Samuel owns his farm, free of mortgage.
