Gamache, William

William GAMACHE (1846-1923)

William GAMACHE was born on 2 Apr 1846, in St Louis, MO, and died 24 May 1923, also in St Louis, MO. These dates appear on his death certificate. His father is Jul. GAMACHE, and his mother's name is not listed, although both parents were born in St Louis. William was a carpenter by trade, and died of "mitral insufficiency."

William married Annette G'SELL. We know this, and the names of the children, from Annette's obituary. Annette (G'SELL) GAMACHE died on 16 Jan 1915, in St Louis.

GAMACHE—Entered into rest Saturday, Jan 16, at 9:15 p.m., Annette Gamache (nee G’Sell), dearly beloved wife of William Gamache and dear mother of Cora Riedy (nee Gamache), Laura Hall (nee Gamache), Walter F. Funeral from the family residence, 6324 Colorado avenue. Due notice of funeral.

Los Angeles (Cal.) papers please copy.

Annette G'SELL was the second child of Ferdinand G'SELL, a brewer in St Louis, and Josephine (BOWERS) G'SELL. The G'SELL family, and the parents of William G'SELL, will be given separate pages.

The first child of William and Annette, Carrie/Cora/Coralie, was born about 1869.

William's occupation is "Painter jer" whatever "jer" means. He owns no real estate and his personal estate is valued at $200. Annett was born about 1849, in Illinois, and her father was of foreign birth.

In the 1880 Census, William is a Contractor. Annette's parents were both born in the US, contradicting the 1870 Census.

The 1900 Census says that Annette's father was born in France, and her mother in Tennessee. This agrees with the 1870 Census, so I think the 1880 Census was incorrect about her father's birthplace. William and Annette had been married 32 years, so they were married between 3 Jun 1867 and 2 Jun 1868. Annette has had 12 children, with 8 still living. William is now a Carpenter, and the family rents a home at 6221 Minnesota Ave.

The children of William GAMACHE and Annette G'SELL are each given a section, below.

1. Coralie E. GAMACHE was born in Feb 1869, and was still living when the 1930 US Census was taken. She married John RIEDY in 1888.

The 1900 US Census for Ward 11, St Louis, St Louis, MO, has the RIEDY family: John (Aug 1866), Coralie (Feb 1869), and 7 children, Estella (May 1889), Johnie (Dec 1890), Celestine (Jul 1892), William (Mar 1894), Victor (Feb 1896), Myrtle (Oct 1897), and Cecelia (Nov 1899). Everyone and their parents were born in Missouri, except John RIEDY, whose father was born in Germany. (This census mistakenly has Coralie's mother's birthplace in Missouri; it should be Illinois.) John and Coralie have been married 12 years. The census was enumerated on 8 Jun 1900, so they were married between 9 Jun 1887 and 8 Jun 1888. They live in a rented home at 8211 7th Ave. Coralie has had 7 children, with all 7 still living, so they are the ones here listed. The occupation is hard to read, but I think is says "Peddler (veg.)" and I'm not sure about the Ped.

In the 1910 US Census, the family is now in Ward 12, St Louis, St Louis. John A and Corallie E GAMACHE now have 11 children, having added Edward C (8), Elmer H (5), Alberta C (3), and Ervin J (2 months). The eldest 7 are still living at home: Estella C (20), John W (19), Celestine A (17), William P (16), Victor G (14), and Myrtle J (12). John and Coralie have been married 21 years. This census was enumerated on 20 Apr 1910, so by comparison with the 1900 census, the marriage was between 21 Apr and 8 Jun 1888. John RIEDY's father's birthplace is "Ger. French." John and his sons John and William have occupation: Hawker, in industry: Vegetables. Daughter Celestine is a Seamstress in a Shirt Factory.

Both John and Coralie were still living in 1930, but in the 1940 Census, John appeared as a widower, living with his daughter Alberta and family.

John RIEDY's death certificate has his death on 13 Aug 1947, in Manchester, St Louis, MO. His birth date was 4 Aug 1866, birthplace Nebraska. His father's name was John RIEDY, and his mother's maiden name was Denoyer.

2. Isabelle GAMACHE was born on 8 Sep 1870 and died 11 Nov 1871. This is from [M], page 17.

3. Laura GAMACHE was born on 22 Aug 1872, in St Louis County, MO, and died 8 Dec 1943, in Los Angeles, CA.

in the California, Death Index, 1940-1997

Name: Laura Hall

[Laura Gamache]

Social Security #: 563164850

Gender: Female

Birth Date: 22 Aug 1872

Birth Place: Missouri

Death Date: 8 Dec 1943

Death Place: Los Angeles

Mother's Maiden Name: Gsell

Father's Surname: Gamache

She married Zellon HALL on 13 Jan 1896, in St Louis, according to the marriage license.

1900 US Census for Ward 11, St Louis, St Louis, MO, taken 8 Jun 1900

Hall Edward Head Apr 1871 29 Married 4 Missouri New York Missouri

Hall Laura Wife Aug 1872 27 Married 4 Missouri Missouri Illinois

Hall Elmer Son Oct 1896 3 Single Missouri Missouri Missouri

Atwell Jane Head Apr 1846 54 Widowed Missouri Missouri Missouri

I think this is the right family. Zellon's middle name must be Edward. He was born in Apr 1871 in Missouri, his father in New York, and his mother in Missouri. They have a son, Elmer HALL, born Oct 1896, in Missouri. Also living with them is Jane ATWELL, a widow, relationship unknown. In 1900 the family is living at 6334 6th Street, St Louis. Edward and Laura have been married 4 years, consistent with an 1896 marriage. Laura has had 1 child, still living, so that is Elmer. Jane ATWELL has had 2 children, with none still living, so she is not Edward's mother. Edward HALL is a grocer, and they live in a rented home.

By 1910, the family has moved to Los Angeles. Family 39 is the Zellon HALL family, and next in the census is Ira and Mary HALL, possibly Zellon's parents. Family 39 resides at 311 Ave 65, and family 40 is at 6503 (illegible) Street - they are probably right around the corner. Zellon rents, but Ira owns his home.

1910 US Census for Ward 74, Los Angeles, CA

39 Hall Raymond Son 2 1908 Single Missouri Missouri Missouri

40 Hall Ira Head 76 1834 Married New York New York New York

40 Hall Mary Wife 67 1843 Married Ohio

Zellon and Laura have 3 sons in 1910: Elmer R (13), Ira (8) and Raymond (2). All were born in Missouri, so the move to California was between 1908 and 1910. Zellon and Laura have been married 14 years, consistent with the 1900 Census. Ira and Mary have been married 24 years, but it's the second marriage for Ira, and the first for Mary. So they were married about 1886, when Zellon was about 15. Also, Mary has not had any children. It looks like Ira may be Zellon's father, but Mary is not his mother, but his stepmother. Zellon HALL is now a Laundryman.

The HALL family stone in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA, reads:

1833 IRA HALL 1910

1842 HELEN L. HALL 1884

1869 RALDON S. HALL 1906

1867 CLARON D. HALL 1907

1872 LAURA E. HALL 1943

4. Walter Ferdinand GAMACHE was born on 8 Nov 1874, in St Louis, MO and died on 21 Jun 1956, also in St Louis, MO. These dates are on his death certificate, which also names his parents, William and Annette, and says he was a carpenter, with deceased wife Elizabeth.

The shared gravestone, of Walter and Elizabeth, b. 1877, d. 1940, is in Mount Olive Catholic Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, MO.

Walter's wife was Elizabeth ROY, b. 17 Nov 1878, d. 23 Sep 1940. See [M], page 17.

5. Harry J. GAMACHE was born on 7 Feb 1877 in St Louis, MO, and died on 21 Mar 1929, in St Louis, MO. Those dates come from his death certificate. It does not give much other family information, but says he was a carpenter, married, and lived at 8372 Madison, in Vinita Park, MO.

The WWI draft card for Harry J. GAMACHE, dated 12 Sep 1918, has the same birth date. The permanent address is 3737 Winnebago, St Louis, MO. The nearest relative is Mrs. Angela GAMACHE, at the same address, so this must be his wife. His occupation was ship carpenter, contractor. He had brown hair and brown eyes.

The 1900 census tells us that Angela was born in Oct 1879, in Missouri. Henry and Angela have been married 3 years, so the marriage was between 9 Jun 1896 and 8 Jun 1897. The family lives at 6411 Minnesota Street, St Louis. Angela has had 2 children, both still living. Harry is a carpenter.

Gamache Mabel C Daughter 12 1898 Single Missouri Missouri Missouri

Gamache Aaron J Son 10 1900 Single Missouri Missouri Missouri

Gamache David D Son 8 1902 Single Missouri Missouri Missouri

In 1910 the family has added another son, David D. GAMACHE. Harry and Angela have been married 13 years, and Angela has had only 3 children, all living, consistent with earlier records. They now live at 5035 S. 15th Street, St Louis, in a house with a mortgage. Harry's occupation is Carpenter, Houses.

The birth record for Mabel Cecelia GAMACHE has birth date 3 Apr 1898.

From [M], Harry's wife was Angeline HERBERT.

6. Girard Albert GAMACHE was born on 25 Mar 1879. He enlisted in the US Army on 28 Dec 1901. His Army record reads:

The last part of the military record is difficult to read. Maybe someone can help?

The US Burial Register for Military Posts and National Cemeteries shows that an amount was paid out for Girard GAMACHE on 8 May 1936. The date of death was 3 May 1936. He was a Sgt. in the 6th Inf. Co. C. Maybe he started in the 16th and was transferred to the 6th. Or else one of these is a mistake.

From the 1910 census, Girard's wife, Anna E, was born about 1881, in Germany. She immigrated to America in 1885, presumably with her parents. Girard and Anna been married 2 years, so the marriage was between 26 Apr 1907 and 25 Apr 1908. Anna has had 2 children, with only 1 still living, which must be Richard F, born about Jul 1908. They live in a rented home, at Gravois 4565 Avenue, St Louis.

In 1920, the family is living at 1610 South Seventh Street, St Louis. They now have 5 children, all born in Missouri, except the 1 daughter, who was born in California. The family must have gone to California for a brief time around 1914, perhaps living near Girard's sister, Laura, and her family, in Los Angeles.

8. Isabella Maud GAMACHE was born on 7 Nov 1883, in St Louis, MO. The Missouri birth record indicates that she was born to William and Annette GAMACHE, who resided at 705 High St. The was the second time they used the name Isabella, or Isabelle. According to [M], Isabella died in infancy.

9. Blanche GAMACHE must have died young. The only evidence for her is [M].

10. Charles R. GAMACHE was born 31 May 1887, and died 8 Feb 1910. These dates are on his gravestone, and on his death certificate. He died at age 22, and does not appear to have been married. The cause of death was "Qartic Regurgitation" with "parenchymatous nephritis".

Charles R Gamache obituary

GAMACHE—Entered into rest on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1910, at 6:30 p. m., after a brief illness, at the age of 22 years 8 months and 8 days, Charles R. 11. Amelia Nellie GAMACHE was born 19 Sep 1889, and died 17 May 1941, according to her death certificate. Her husband was William A. NEWELL.

William GAMACHE shows up in 1920, living with the NEWELL family. He is the father-in-law of William NEWELL, so Nellie NEWELL must be his daughter, Nellie GAMACHE.

Gamache William Father-in-law 74 1846 Widowed Missouri

William NEWELL is a year older than Nellie, so he was probably born about 1888, in Missouri. He was a foreman at Electric Motor Company. His father was born in Missouri, but his mother was born in Germany. William and Nellie have two sons: Charles, age 10, and George P, age 1 and 2 months. So George P was probably born in Nov 1918.

William GAMACHE, age 74, is widowed, but still a Carpenter.

Summary

Annette (G'SELL) GAMACHE had 12 children, of whom 8 were still living in 1900, and 6 were still living when Annette died in 1915. I have found names, at least, for 11 of the 12.
