James Thomas SPRUILL was born 18 Aug 1819 in Jackson, GA, and died 12 Jan 1899 in De Kalb County, GA, age 79. He married Almeda Jane Millie Mollie ADAMS on 17 Mar 1842 in De Kalb, GA. She was born 2 Nov 1821 in Jackson County, GA, and died 05 Sep 1896 in De Kalb, GA, age 74. So they were 22 and 20 when they married. They lived in or near Cross Keys, in the northern tip of De Kalb County, and had 10 children.
The name was often spelled SPRUILL, SPRUELL, SPRUIELL and SPREWELL, sometimes with one L. Different branches of the family later adopted some of the alternate spellings.
James was the son of Stephen SPRUILL and Margaret LORD, who came to GA from Abbeville, SC. Millie was the daughter of Salathiel ADAMS and Sarah HARRIS. Salathiel was born in Anson County, NC, and Sarah may have been born in very early GA. The Stephen SPRUILL family moved into northwestern GA, between Dec 1815 and Dec 1817, where they were among the earliest white settlers. I have not found the LORD family. The ADAMS and HARRIS families may have been in GA even earlier than 1815.
Millie (ADAMS) SPRUILL (1821 - 1896)
Millie's gravestone in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA has her birthdate 2 Nov 1821 and death 5 Sep 1896. Her first name(s) have been a subject of some confusion. She is called Millie, Milly, Millia, Emilli, Mollie, Amelia, Almeda, and Jane. This may be partly due to being conflated with some of her sisters. Since Millie is on her gravestone, and she is called Emilli is on the gravestones of 2 of her children, those are probably the best guesses.
De Kalb County, GA
1839 De Kalb County, GA. Cross Keys is in the north. The future site of Atlanta is about 6 miles west of Decatur.
The communities of Cross Keys, Shallowford, Oak Grove, Sandy Springs and and Dunwoody were in the northern tip of De Kalb County. In 1853 Fulton County was formed, from the western part of DeKalb. The Oak Grove District, in the northern tip of Fulton, included the town of Sandy Springs. Shallowford, at the northern tip of DeKalb (now Fulton) County, was originally Shallow Ford, on the Chattahoochee River, where James BROOKS ran a ferry, starting in 1823. The SPRUILL family in De Kalb County, GA
James SPRUILL and Millie ADAMS, both born and raised in Jackson County, GA, were married on 17 Mar 1842 in DeKalb County, GA, according to Georgia Marriage Records. They lived the rest of their lives in De Kalb County.
By 1850, James and Milly had 4 children. They lived in the same township as Milly's parents and siblings. Several of the SPRUILL families were listed consecutively, so they probably all lived on or near the Stephen SPRUILL farm.
In 1860, the family appeared in Fulton County, which was created in 1853 from the western half of DeKalb County, so it may be that the family didn't move. James' father and brother, Stephen Sr and Jr, also are found in Oak Grove, Fulton, GA in 1860.
James' father Stephen SPRUILL had died in Aug 1869.
The 1870 US Census had 4 consecutive SPREWEL or SPREWELL families in De Kalb County. They were probably living close together, since they were close in the census. They are clearly the families of James SPRUILL and 3 of his sons.
William, Joseph and Thomas SPRUILL, brothers of Sarah Washington (SPRUILL) MARTIN, have their own families, living with or next door to their parents. James is still with his parents, and there are 3 younger children, perhaps grandchildren. I don't know who the two 23-year-old women are. Under Occupation, they are "At Home." The men are all Farmers, 12-year-old James F is a Farm Laborer, and the women are Keeping House, except for the two At Home. This census also lists wealth.

I think that Matilda MARTIN, staying with Thomas and Naomi in 1870, was Naomi's sister.
In 1880 the same 4 SPRUILL families are still in DeKalb County, still listed almost consecutively.
Thomas's wife is Masouri instead of Naomi. One is probably a middle name. The men's occupation is Laborer, not Farmer.
I have not found James SPRUILL's middle name or initial in any records. Some say it is T; others say E. His son is James F. SPRUILL in each census, above. The Spruill Family Bible has both deaths recorded. I believe that James SPRUILL Sr died on 12 Jan 1889.

James and Millie had 10 children, in Dunwoody-Cross Keys-Shallowford. All of them lived their entire lives in this general area, except Sarah, my 2g-grandmother, who went to Logan County, AR. The two eldest sons, William and Thomas, fought in the American Civil War.
There was a strong connection between the Stephen MARTIN family and the James SPRUILL family, as three MARTIN siblings married three SPRUILL siblings, all in DeKalb County, GA.
Benjamin Stephen MARTIN married Sarah Washington SPRUILL on 25 Sep 1863.
Naoma A. MARTIN married Thomas Franklin SPRUILL on 15 Jul 1866.

2. William Marion SPRUILL was born 24 Apr 1844 in Cross Keys, De Kalb, GA, and died 1 Feb 1922 in Sandy Springs, Fulton, GA. He married 1868 in De Kalb, GA, to Elizabeth BALL, born 31 Aug 1838 in Dunwoody, De Kalb, GA, died 30 Apr 1933 in Sandy Springs, Fulton, GA.
William enlisted in the 36th Georgia regiment, Company F, in 1862. The entire company was captured at Vicksburg, 4 Jul 1863. They were released, and went back home, but later reorganized and went back into the war.
In 1870, William and Elizabeth had a small farm in Shallowford. They were listed next to William's parents and several of his siblings.
William and Elizabeth lived in Shallowford, and had 6 children. All lived to old age, at least 70.

Thomas and Naomi had about 15 children, from 1863 to 1887. They lived their entire lives in the Dunwoody area. After Naomi died, Thomas married Mary INGRAM. He was 68 and she was almost 53.

The 1900 US Census has Calhoun and Mary in Shallowford, with 6 children. Their 15-year-old daughter Eliza is recently married, but her husband is not present. Calhoun has a farm with a mortgage.

THREE MEN KILLED AND TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED

Dunwoody, Ga. Nov 27—Three men were killed and two others seriously injured by the explosion of a boiler at the Dunwoody Milling Company here to-day.
The dead: Graham Spruill, aged 24; John Manning, 40, and Leonard O’shields, 40. The injured: C. A. Spruill and son Benny were rushed to a hospital in Atlanta.

9. Millia Arminda SPRUILL was born 4 Mar 1864 in Shallowford, DeKalb, GA, and died on 8 Aug 1884. She was called Milly SPREWELL, age 6, in the 1870 US Census, and Millia A. SPRUILL, age 17, in the 1880 US Census, both times living with her parents in Shallowford.
She married Benjamin Franklin BURDETT on 9 Feb 1882 in Fulton County, GA. They had 2 daughters, both died in infancy, and Millia died 4 days after the 2nd. Benjamin remarried, to Jennie REED, daughter of Joel REED and Nancy HAYS. Benjamin and Jennie had 6 more children. Millia and Jennie were 1st cousins 1x removed.
Benjamin shares a burial plot with his 2 wives and several of his children, in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA.
This ad appeared many times in the Atlanta Constitution, starting in 1911.

LAWTON BURDETT HURT WHEN AUTO STRIKES BICYCLE
Lawton Burdett, son of B. F. Burdett, of the Burdett Realty company, was severely injured Saturday night when the bicycle he was riding was run down by an automobile driven by B. L. Cohran, who gave his address as 11 West Peachtree street. The accident occurred at Seventeenth and West Peachtree streets.
The youth was removed to a local hospital where his injuries were found to consist of severe bruises about the head and face and probable injuries to the spine. Physicians say he will recover. Cohran is a driver for a local taxicab line. He was released on bond of $200 after being arrested.

10. Stephen Henry SPRUILL was born 20 Nov 1867 in Shallowford, De Kalb, GA, and died 31 Jan 1936 in McDonough, Henry, GA. He married Rhoda L. "Rhody" ABERNATHY on 13 Mar 1887 in Fulton County, GA. Rhoda was born 7 Jul 1864 and died 22 Apr 1929. So he was 19 and she was 22 when they married. Their shared gravestone is found in Sandy Springs United Methodist Cemetery, Sandy Springs, Fulton County, GA.
The 1870 US Census, above, calls him Stephen H, SPREWELL, age 2, living with his parents in Shallowford. In the 1880 US Census he was called Steaven N. E. SPRUILL, age 13, still living with his parents in Shallowford.
In 1900 (Stephen) Henry owns a farm, free of mortgage, in Shallowford, listed near several of his siblings. Henry and Rhoda had been married 13 years, consistent with the marriage record. Rhoda had 4 children, all still living in 1900, clearly the 4 children listed.
The 1910 and 1920 US Censuses have the family in Shallowford. After Rhoda died in 1929, Stephen moved to McDonough, in Henry County, GA, along with his son Marcus and family.

Stephen Henry SPRUILL obituary
Mr. S. H. Spruill, age 68, died at his home near Oakland church on January 31, after an illness of several months duration. He was one of that section’s prominent and highly esteemed citizens, whose life was outstanding as an upright Christian man. He was a consistent and loyal member of the Methodist church, was trustee of the Oakland school for a number of years, and his death brings sadness to a wide circle of friends and loved ones. He is survived by one son, Mr. M. H. Spruill, of McDonough, and one daughter, Mrs. Lemma Henry, of Dunwoody. Funeral services were held at Sandy Springs church near Dunwoody, Sunday morning, February 2, at 11 o’clock. Rev. Silvey, of Hampton officiating with interment in church yard.
