Taylor, James Sr

James TAYLOR (bef. 1650 - 1720) and Mary TAYLOR (bef. 1650 - 1700)

8g-grandparents

James TAYLOR was an indentured servant of John PYNCHON, brother of William PYNCHON, founder and wealthiest citizen of Springfield, MA. He appeared in Springfield in 1662. [JMB, Vol. I, p. 45]

Incidentally, John PYNCHON, probably a descendant of John or William, a clerk of courts in 1742, married the daughter of the Rev. Edward TAYLOR, of Westfield. [MAG, p. 600-1]

James married Mary TAYLOR on 17 Jan 1667, probably in Springfield. They had 11 children, probably all born in Springfield. Mary died on 18 Mar 1700, and James died on 27 Oct 1720, both in Springfield. Mary was the daughter of Jonathan TAYLOR and his wife Mary. I don't know if James and Mary TAYLOR were related, or if James adopted her name. [JMB, Vol. II, p. 643]

In 1677 James TAYLOR was chosen as hayward for the common fields, for house-lots on west side of the river, and John PETTY was chosen as surveyor of highways on the west side of the river. [MAG, p. 176] In 1693, James TAYLOR's daughter Mary would marry John PETTY's son John.

4. John TAYLOR was born 14 Mar 1673, and died 12 Nov 1673, age almost 8 months.

5. Samuel TAYLOR was born 26 Nov 1674, and must have died before 6 Apr 1686, as they tried again with that name.

6. Elizabeth TAYLOR was born 05 Jan 1678, and died 27 Nov 1710.

Samuel TAYLOR's gravestone in Old Meadow Cemetery, West Springfield, says he died 18 Dec 1774, "in ye 84 Year of his Age." So he had passed his 83rd birthday, but not his 84th, which implies he was born between 18 Dec 1690 and 17 Dec 1691.

11. Rebecca TAYLOR was born 12 Jul 1689.
