Roote, John of Badby

John ROOTE (1575 - ?) and Mary Ann RUSSELL (1577 - ?)

my 10g-grandparents

John ROOTE was born about 1575, and baptized 23 Jun 1576, in the village of Milton Malsor, Northampton, England, 66 miles N of central London. His parents were Thomas ROOTE and Ann BURRELL, who moved the family 10 miles W to Badby, where Thomas owned a house from 1597 to 1606, and died 5 Apr 1609, age 54, in Badby. John had a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Susanna.

John ROOTE married Ann RUSSELL/RUSSALL/RUSHALL on 27 Jul 1600 in Badby. One record says Ann was born in 1574, another says 1579, so let's call it about 1577. They had 4 known children, baptized from 1600 to 1608, in Badby. Their 2 sons emigrated to America in 1637.

Badby has a tradition of Morris dancing, and I would like to think that the ROOTEs took part.

  1. Mary ROOTE was baptized on 21 De 1600 in Badby, probably born shortly before that. Her parents had been married almost 5 months when she was baptized, if the dates are correct.

2. Susannah ROOTE was baptized on 18 Oct 1603 in Badby.

3. Thomas 305 ROOTE was baptized 16 Jan 1605 in Badby, and died 17 Jul 1694 in Northampton, MA, age 89. With his bother John, he emigrated in 1637 to America, settling in Hartford, CT for 15 years, where he was an early settler. He may have been the same Thomas ROOTE who took part in the Pequot War (1636-8). He was both farmer and weaver of cloth. [JPR, pp. 101-2]

He was a considerable landholder there [Hartford], and one parcel of the land assigned to him was located on what is now North Main street, about a mile west of the State House. [JPR, p. 101]

Thomas had 6 sons and 1 daughter, in Hartford. The name of his wife is not known. In 1654, he moved his family to Northampton, MA, where he was a Selectman in 1659, and one of the Eight Pillars of the church, organized in 1661, with the Rev. Eleazar MATHER.

The town of Northampton, originally called Nonotuck, was first settled by the English in 1654, so Thomas ROOTE and his family were among the first. Northampton is about 40 miles N of Hartford, and both are on the W bank of the Connecticut River.

Trumbull [HNM, Vol. I, p. 118] says that Thomas was in Salem, MA in 1637, and went to Hartford in 1639. However, J. P. Root cautions that it was Thomas ROOTES, "who was a resident of Salem, Mass., about the same period, and who remained there until his death." [JPR, p. 101] In fact the first section of [JPR] is devoted to this Thomas ROOTES.

It appears that Thomas and/or his eldest son, Joseph, had a home lot on King Street and one on Pleasant Street in Northampton.

The old Root homestead in Northampton was on King street, opposite where the Roman Catholic church now stands, and it has only within a few years been torn down. [JPR, p. 102]

On the east ride of Pleasant Street were five home lots. [1656-7] Three of them belonged to persons who signed the original petition. John Webb had two acres, bounded north on Main Street and east on ?he (Pomeroy) brook; next to Webb, bounded west on Pleasant Street, and north on Main, was Alexander Edwards, (these two lots afterwards comprised the homestead of Gov. Caleb Strong); south of Webb and Edwards was William Janes; next came Thomas Root, and joining him on the south was Thomas Mason. All these lots were bounded west on Pleasant Street. Samuel Wright Sr., had a hone lot of four acres, extending from King Street to the brook, bounded south on Main Street, which included the site of the First National Bank and contiguous property. Joining Wright on the north was that of William Miller, extending from King Street to the (Market Street) brook. This locates all the eight settlers who signed the original petition, with the exception of William Clarke. He did not appear till 1660, and he had one of the first home lots taken west of Meeting House Hill. [HNM, Vol. I, p. 18-9]

On King street the lots were divided [1656-7] into parcels of two acres each, situated on both sides of the street. Samuel Wright Sr., had the first lot at the corner of King and Main Streets, containing four acres. William Miller, David Burt, John King, Walter Lee, Thomas Woodford, Isaac Sheldon, Samuel Allen, and Joseph Root, had two acres on the east side of King Street, extending from the highway to the brook on Market Street. Every settler being entitled to a home lot of four acres, an additional two acres was granted to each of these men. The additions were located on the other side of the street, west of the brook, commencing at Park Street. William Miller had the first lot, and the others were laid off contiguously in the order named above, Samuel Allen’s being the farthest north. Joseph Root had no land except on the east side of the street, coming two years after the others, and John Allen was granted four acres, above Root, in 1671. The land between the King Street brook and the highway was held as “commons,” and was not disposed of for several years. [HNM, Vol. I, p. 36-7]

Thomas Roote was at Salem in 1637, at Hartford two years afterwards, and removed to Northampton in 1655. He was among the first settlers to arrive here, and was one of the signers of the original petition. A quiet, substantial farmer, though a weaver by trade, he never arrived at the position of leader. He was several times elected as selectman, and was one of the officers of the town when careful men were in demand. His home lot was on the easterly side of Pleasant Street, below what is now known as Pearl Street. He died in 1694, at the advanced age of 84 years. He had six sons and one daughter, all born before he removed to Northampton. [HNM, Vol. I, p. 118]
