Roote, John 2800

John ROOTE (1608-1684) of Farmington and Mary KILBOURN (1619-1697)

my 9g-grandparents

John ROOTE from Badby, Daventry, Northampton, England

The name ROOTE is often spelled ROOT, ROOTT, ROTE, ROOTS, and ROOTES. At least 8 men of that name immigrated to America from England, independently, in the period 1834-8, and the exact relationship among them has been difficult to ascertain. See [JPR, p. 42]. The ROOTE spelling was used primarily by our ancestor John ROOTE, from Badby, and after a generation or two the spelling gradually changed to ROOT.

Coat of Arms of the ROOTE family. [JPR, frontispiece]

The motto, reviresco, is Latin, meaning "I flourish again" or "I will grow strong again." It is also the motto of the Maxwell and MacEwan clans in Scotland.

The village of Badby lies about 65 miles NW of London, near Daventry. The ROOTE family was prominent.

BADBY, a village and a parish in Daventry district, Northampton. The village stands on the ascent of a hill, amid a sandy heath called Badby Down, near the source of the river Nen, 2½ miles SSW of Daventry, and 4¾ W of Weedon r. station. It has a post office under Daventry. The parish comprises 2,370 acres. Real property, £4,455. Pop., 618. Houses, 161. The property is much subdivided. The manor belongs to Sir Knightly. Hard blue ragstone is quarried. An ancient camp, ten acres in area, with wide deep fosse and very steep ramparts, occurs on Arbury hill, and is supposed to be Roman. The living is a vicarage, united with the curacy of Newnham, in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £306. Patron, Christchurch, Oxford. The church is fine old structure. There are a free school for girls, a national school, and charities £10.

John ROOTE was born on 26 Feb 1608 in Badby, according to Parish records. His parents, John ROOTE Sr and Mary RUSSELL, were married in 1600, and had children: Mary, Susannah, Thomas, and John Jr, in Badby. When John Sr died, John Jr was adopted by his wealthy uncle, a brother of John Sr.

John ROOTE of Farmington, CT

The ROOTEs were Puritans, and John's uncle was a zealous anti-Catholic, who insisted that John should join the Parliamentary army under Cromwell, to fight against Charles I, and the Catholics. However, John didn't like the idea of going to war, and joined a group of Puritans who were emigrating to America, about 1637, when John was 28 or 29, and single. Around 1640 he settled in Farmington, CT, where he was one of the founders, and a leading citizen. He has been known as John ROOTE of Farmington. [JPR, p. 314]

Thomas ROOTE, older brother of John, also came to America about 1637, and settled in Hartford, CT. John and Thomas probably traveled together, and were probably both in Hartford from 1637 to 1640. Thomas remained in Hartford until 1652, when he took his family to Northampton, MA.

Farmington first settled 1640

The settlement made on the Tunxis (Farmington) River in 1640 was incorporated in 1645, and given the name of Farmington. The township included the territory that has since been divided into the towns of Southington, Berlin, New Britain, Bristol, Burlington, Avon, and Plainville. [EBS, p. 53]

Also about 1640, John ROOTE married Mary KILBOURN, of Glastonbury, CT. Mary had immigrated, along with her parents and siblings, in 1635, on the ship Increase. They came from Wood Ditton, or Woodditton, in East Cambridge District, Cambridgeshire, England, which was and is some 70 miles east of Bagby. Mary was 11 years younger than John at their wedding, so she was born about 1619. See the Thomas KILBOURN page.

John and Mary had 8 children, in Farmington. They were members in full communion at the Farmington Congregational church. He died in Aug 1684, at age 76, and she died in 1697, age 78. His estate was valued at £819, a respectable sum.

The data shown below, and the numbering system, are from [JPR], except where otherwise indicated. The birth dates of 4 of the children are unknown, but it is known that John 2801 was the eldest. Some had already changed from ROOTE to ROOT, and I will follow [JPR] in this. For brevity, Farmington is Farmington, Hartford, CT.

Several accounts have John ROOTE's death around 1684. The SAR application of Ray E. McCURDY has Aug 1684.

The 3 eldest sons, John Jr, Samuel, and Thomas, all removed to Westfield, MA, probably before 1667, as John Jr's first child was born there on 22 Sep 1667. The move was probably after John Jr married on 18 Oct 1664. Samuel and Thomas were single, and married after moving to Westfield. It is not known if they all moved at the same time, but Westfield is only about 25 miles north of Farmington, so there could have been some movement back and forth.

Westfield, MA was first settled by the English in 1660, and was in Hampshire County, formed in 1662, and became part of Hampden County when it was formed in 1812. So the 3 ROOTE brothers were among the early English settlers of Westfield, but not the first.

1. John 2801 ROOTE, the first-born child of John 2800 ROOTE and Mary KILBOURN, was born about 1642, in Farmington, and died on 24 Sep 1687, in Farmington. He married Mary ASHLEY on 18 Oct 1664. Mary was born 6 Feb 1644 or 6 Apr 1641, and died 9 Mar 1702. She was the daughter of Robert [JPR, p. 316] or Richard [GD, Vol. III, p. 572] ASHLEY, who located first in Roxbury, MA, and afterwards removed to Springfield, MA, with Hon. Wm. PYNCHON and his company.

Savage [GD, Vol. III, p. 572] is incorrect - Mary's father was Robert ASHLEY, according to [CHP, p. 21] which gives the following information:

John and Mary moved to Westfield, MA by 1667, and all of their 8 children were born there. John held the office of commissary in 1680, and was paid £14 by the General Court of Massachusetts. He died in Westfield, at age 44 or 45, leaving an estate valued at £505. Mary (ASHLEY) ROOTE was left with 8 children, ages 3 to 20.

In 1678, after King Philip's War (1675-8), John was among a group of men from Farmington who formed an agreement to settle in Mattatuck, which became Watertown, CT. He must have backed out, because he wasn't mentioned in the records of Watertown after 1680, and he probably never lived there. [JPR, p. 316] Since John died in 1687, of unknown cause, perhaps he was unable to make the move.

The descendants of John and Mary scattered to Boston, Great Barrington, Pittsfield, Sheffield, and West Stockbridge, MA; Enfield, CT; Auburn, Canandaigua, Center Lisle, Farmington, Lagrange, Mendon, Norwich, Rochester, Shortsville, Victor, Williamson, and Wyoming, NY; Adrian, Constantine, Flint, and Montcalm, MI; and Florence, KY. Savage [GD, Vol. III, p. 573] tells us that all the children of John and Mary were living in 1710. Joshua 2815 ROOT removed to Great Barrington, MA, around 1726-30, where he was one of the original settlers.

Captain Adijah DEWEY

He was appointed surveyor of the bridge at Mill brook, September 22, 1691; county surveyor in 1693; constable, 1697; tithingman, 1702. On October 31, 1718, he was on a committee to treat with John Gunn Sr. concerning a place for the new meetinghouse. He was in command of the South Company, and August 20, 1723, they were ordered “to do scouting duty for 14 days”: September 18, “to relieve the Frontiers”; October 11, he was ordered to “get your troop ready and march to the relief of Deerfield and the other river towns” for eight weeks. He had thirteen acres in the general field in 1723; was selectman in 1730 and 1740; joined the church April 20, 1729. He served on many committees and was one of the most prominent men in the town. [NEF Vol I, p. 476]

The MOSELEY Family

The first ancestor of the Moseley family in America was John Moseley, a native of Lancashire, England, who sailed from the port of Plymouth early in 1630 on the ship "Mary and John," and arrived at Nantasket on the 30th of May. He settled in Dorchester, which was his home the remainder of his life, his death taking place in 1661. His remains were interred near those of Richard Mather.

His son John, who was the second son in order of birth, removed from Dorchester to Windsor, Conn., and thence in 1677 to Westfield, where he secured land on both sides of the river, but, after residing here for a number of years, returned to Windsor, where he died in 1690. He married Mary, daughter of Benjamin Newberry.

Their son Joseph was born on the 21st of December, 1670, and married, in 1696, Abigail Root. About the year 1719 he removed from Westfield to Glastonbury, Conn., and there spent his declining years.

The next in line was his son, David Moseley, Esq., who was born February 9, 1704, resided in Westfield, was a Tory in pre-Revolutionary times and a man of much influence in the community. His commission as Justice of the Peace from King George III., bearing the date 1749, is still in the possession of his descendants. He married Margaret Dewey in 1730, and died January 3, 1768.

His son, Colonel David Moseley, of the Third Regiment of militia, was born in Westfield on March 7, 1735, and died November 5, 1798. He commanded a company in the Revolutionary War, led it to Ticonderoga, and was present at the surrender of Burgoyne. The diary kept by him during the war is a sacred relic in the family. His wife was Lydia Gay, of Dedham, Mass.

In 1787 William Moseley, son of Colonel David and Lydia, erected the house where his grandchildren now reside; and here his commission as Captain in the State militia, signed by Governor Samuel Adams, is preserved. He was born April 6, 1764, married Lydia Noble, of Westfield, a daughter of Matthew Noble, and died April 30, 1839.

[LCH, p. 747]

2. Deacon Samuel 2802 ROOTE was born about 1644 in Farmington, and died 27 Nov 1711, at age 66 or 67. He married in 1680 to Mary ORTON, who was born 16 May 1650, and survived her husband. Mary was the daughter of Thomas ORTON.

Along with his brothers John and Thomas, Samuel removed to Westfield, MA, where he was made a freeman in 1680, and deacon of the church in 1703. They had no children, but had one adopted son, John DAVIS. Samuel left a library of 39 books (mostly religious), 4 guns, and a good supply of ammunition.

3. Thomas 2803 ROOTE was born about 1648, in Farmington, and died 16 Aug 1709, in Westfield, MA. He married 3 times, and had children by each wife. He married (1) Mary GRIDLEY about 1670, and she died in 1673. He married (2) Mary SPENCER on 7 Oct 1675, and she died 4 Nov 1690. He married (3) Sarah DUMBLETON on 25 Jan 1692, and she died 3 Jan 1694. Thomas ROOTE and Mary SPENCER were my 8g-grandparents.

See the Thomas ROOTE page.

4. Mary 2804 ROOTE was born about 1649, in Farmington. She married Isaac BRONSON, about 1669. Isaac was born on 7 Dec 1645, in Farmington, the son of John BRONSON. They settled in Waterbury, Litchfield, CT and had 9 children. Isaac died in 1719, and Mary died shorty after him.

John BRONSON/BROWNSON/BRUNSON/BRANSON, and possibly his father, Richard, were in Hartford at a very early date, probably 1640, although they were not part of the original land division of 1639. John BRONSON was a veteran of the Pequot War. In 1641 he removed to Farmington, where he was one of the 7 pillars at the organization of the church at Farmington, along with John ROOTE. His 3rd son was Isaac BRONSON. See [RRH, p. 341] for the BRONSON ancestry.

The BRONSON family became quite prominent in Waterbury. See [HB].

5. Stephen 2805 ROOTE was born in Farmington, date unknown, and died 6 Jan 1717, in Farmington. He married Sarah WADSWORTH, daughter of John WADSWORTH. Sarah died 20 Mar 1740. They had at least 5 children, in Farmington.

Stephen lived all his life in Farmington, and many of his descendants remained there. Others went to Berlin, Bristol, Southington, and Waterbury, CT; West Stockbridge, MA; Buffalo, Catskill, Corfu, Geneva, Hanover, Homer, Lockport, Phelps, and Sherman, NY; Harrisville, OH.; Liberty, MI; Chicago, IL; Louisville, KY; Milledgeville, GA; and VA. [JPR, p. 41]

Stephen ROOTE

He was the giant of Farmington, where he resided, being six feet and six inches in height. He was well built, and a man of herculean strength and powers. From the old chronicles and traditions of the family it appears that he was one of the greatest racers of his day, when it was a common and fashionable amusement to engage in such manly exercises. He was never outrun except by an Indian who was in great repute as a runner. He was also a great wrestler. He was quite a noted man in the Indian wars, accompanying Major Treat and some friendly Indians from Farmington, and being engaged in the fight which took place at Fort Narragansett, when the Indian fort was destroyed, &c. On that occasion he carried a sword, and a huge musket, with which it it is said he did terrible execution. Both of these equipments remain with the family to this day. He was engaged in the Indian war some two years and a half, and tradition tells of his wonderful marches in this campaign. He was a man of great mind, sound judgment, and mighty courage. John WADSWORTH, son of William WADSWORTH, married Sarah STANLEY about 1662, at which time they already had 2 or 3 of their 8 children. John and Sarah were both from Hartford, but removed early to Farmington. Their children: Sarah (1657), Samuel (1660), John (1662), Mercy (1665; died in infancy), William (1671), Nathaniel and James, twins (1677), Thomas (1680), Hezekiah (1683; had no children).

John WADSWORTH of Farmington

He early removed to Farmington, Conn. He did not receive a legacy in his father’s will, and it is supposed that he had previously received his portion. He resided in Farmington until his death, in 1689. His widow, Sarah, survived him. John Wadsworth, as well as being one of the prominent men of Farmington, was also one of the wealthiest. In 1669, there were eighty-four taxable estates, and Mr. Wadsworth’s was the third in value, being rated at £183. In the records, his name appears as Sergeant John Wadsworth. He was a member of what is now the State Senate, and was present when his brother Joseph seized the Charter and secreted it in the Oak. [HAW, p. 202]

Ensign John WADSWORTH

Ensign John Wadsworth of Farmington, was a son of William Wadsworth of Hartford, and brother, I believe, of the famous Captain Joseph Wadsworth, of charter-oak memory. He was an assistant from 1679 to his death in 1689. Some of his descendants have been distinguished. [HB, p. 8]

William JUDD, 1st child of Thomas JUDD and Sarah FREEMAN

1. William; b. May 7, 1689; bap. in Farmington, April 5, 1601, and m. Jan. 21, 1712-13, Mary, d. of Stephen Root of Farmington, where he settled, at the Great Swamp, so called, (Kensington, now Berlin.) About 1715, he returned to Waterbury, was made a £40 proprietor, and received a special grant out of the common lands, "he to fence for it." His father deeded to him, in 1717, his house and homestead, on the corner of Willow street, now occupied by John S. Kingsbury, where they both lived for many years. In 1735, however, April 12th, the son, in the way of exchange, conveyed all "his lands and buildings in the stated line of the common fence," (the place where he lived being included,) to Ebenezer Bronson, and removed to Westbury, where he d. Jan. 29, 1772. His farm lay in the southwest corner of the society, its southern border forming the boundary line. His first wife d. Dec. 11, 1751, having had nine children. He then married Widow Hope Lee, who survived him. Estate £579, 10s.

William Judd, after his return from Farmington, soon became more or less of a public man, and repeatedly occupied posts of honor and responsibility. He was constable in 1718, 1719 and 1728; townsman in 1722, 1723 and afterwards; school committee in 1730; deputy in 1729, 1730, 1731, 1736 and 1739; moderator of town meeting, 1738-9 and 1753, &c. After the decease of John Judd, in 1717, he was chosen town clerk, and continued to discharge the duties of the office till Dec. 1721, when Mr. Southmayd was appointed. He was, so far as appears, a competent and acceptable clerk. His penmanship is a great improvement on that of his immediate predecessors. In 1730, he reached the goal of military ambition and became a captain.

Although there is a discrepancy: Joseph was baptized in 1660, so he was born 1660 or earlier. His father John was born 1650. John's father George was born 1646. Maybe I'm reading it wrong?

7. Joseph 2807 ROOT was born in Farmington, date unknown, and died 18 Dec 1739. He married (1) Elizabeth WARNER on 17 Sep 1691, and (2) Ruth PORTER on 3 May 1727.

Joseph and Elizabeth had only 3 known children, and a few descendants, who went to Bristol, Kent, and Meriden, CT; New York city; Aurora, IL, and TX. [JPR, p. 41]
