Huntley, Samuel

Samuel 13 HUNTLEY (1713 - 1770) and Ruth HUNTLEY (1717 - 1805)

my 5g-grandparents

Samuel 13 HUNTLEY was born 23 Dec 1713 in Lyme, Saybrook, Colony of Connecticut, the son of John 4 HUNTLEY and Elizabeth PEARSON. He died in Lyme, 11 May 1770, at age 56, according to [VH, page 71], but he was called deceased in the document naming executors to his will, dated 11 Dec 1669. [SH]

Samuel 13 HUNTLEY married his 1st cousin, Ruth HUNTLEY, on 5 May 1736 in Lyme. Ruth was born 1 Mar 1716/7 in Lyme, the daughter of Aaron 5 HUNTLEY Jr and Deborah DEWOLF. She died on 15 Jun 1805, at age 88. [VH, page 73] They were 1st cousins because they shared a pair of grandparents, Aaron 3 HUNTLEY Sr and Mary CHAMPION. Samuel and Ruth had 12 children, probably all born in Lyme, from 1737 to 1761.

Using the numbering system of [VH].

The town of Lyme was part of the plantation of East Saybrook, established in Feb 1665, from the Saybrook Colony. The towns of East Lyme and Old Lyme have separated from Lyme, with Old Lyme containing the earliest settlements, on Long Island Sound. What is now Old Lyme was, in Samuel HUNTLEY's day, the town of Lyme, East Saybrook Plantation, Colony of Connecticut.

Lyme, East Lyme and Old Lyme are now technically part of the County of New London, although "There is no county government and no county seat, as is the case with all eight of Connecticut's counties. In Connecticut, towns are responsible for all local government activities, including fire and rescue, snow removal, and schools. In a few cases, neighboring Towns will share certain resources (e.g., water, gas, etc.). New London County is merely a group of towns on a map; it has no governmental authority." [Wikipedia]

Samuel 13 and his family lived in Lyme, next to his brother Benjamin 12, on property that had been given by his father, John 4 HUNTLEY, on 13 Jan 1736, which was 4 months before Samuel 13's marriage. He also purchased some land in New London from his brother, Joseph 11. [VH, page 73]

Samuel 13 HUNTLEY will, 1769-70

Samuel left a large estate, which is described in detail in papers written after his death, kept in the records of New London District. The first document, dated 11 Dec 1769, names Edward CHAPMAN, Ruth HUNTLEY and Benjamin HUNTLEY as executors. Various papers involved with the distribution of property are dated throughout 1770. [SH] Mentioned:

Mrs Ruth HUNTLEY, widow of deceased
Aron
HUNTLEY, “her son” and 3rd son of deceased
Benja
HUNTLEY son of deceased
Molley CHAPMAN, daughter of deceased
Samu
HUNTLY 2nd son of deceased
Hezekieh one of the sons of deceased
Sollomon
HUNTLEY one of the sons of deceased
Ruth
HUNTLEY one of the daughters of deceased
Hipsaba
HUNTLEY the youngest daughter of deceased

There was an Esther HUNTLEY mentioned in the estate distribution papers, but not as a daughter, and I think this was probably the 1st cousin of Samuel 13. This Esther HUNTLEY was born 21 May 1724 in Lyme, daughter of Aaron 5 HUNTLEY.

Descendants

Samuel 13 and Ruth HUNTLEY lived all their lives in Lyme, had 12 children. The summary below is followed by a section for each of the 12 and their families.

For brevity, Lyme is the settlement that was part of Saybrook Colony, and became part of the County of New London, CT. It is now called Old Lyme.

Several of the sons and sons-in-law of Samuel 13 and Ruth were involved in the American Revolution. More information can be found on my Revolutionary War page.

HUNTLEYs in 1790

After the revolution, the European population exploded out of the original colonies, mostly westward. The HUNTLEYs were no exception, although they moved northward.

About 7 of the 12 children of Samuel 13 and Ruth were still living in 1790. Only Molley stayed in Lyme, and I'm guessing that Ruth stayed with her daughter Molley and family until her death in 1805.

Benjamin 29 HUNTLEY had moved to Manchester, NY (later in VT) before the warm and removed to Elizabethtown (Brockville) in the District of Luneburg, Ontario, Canada between 1783 and 1789. They settled in Bastard, Leeds, Ontario, Canada by 1800.

Molley HUNTLEY married Edward CHAPMAN in 1765, and they stayed in Lyme, with a family of 8 in 1790.

Samuel 30 HUNTLEY had 2 wives, but by 1790 he seems to have been a widower, with a family of 5 males, in Leicester, Addison, VT.

Aaron 31 HUNTLEY was head of a family of 5 in Cheshire County, NH, with 1 male 16 or over, 3 males under 16, and 1 female.

Hezekiah 32 HUNTLEY was head of a family of 4 in Lempster, Cheshire County, NH, with 2 males under 16, 1 male over 16, and 3 females.

Hepzibah HUNTLEY married Zophar MACK in 1777 in Alstead, Cheshire, NH, and by 1790 they were back in New London District, with a family of 6, including 1 male under 16, 2 males 16 or over, and 3 females.

Solomon HUNTLEY had a family of 10 in Bennington, Bennington, VT with 4 males under 16, 1 male over 16, and 5 females.

1. Solomon HUNTLEY was born 19 Jun 1737 in Lyme, and died 2 Oct 1759, at age 22, while serving as a Private in Captain Zebulon Butler’s 9th Company, Colonel Eleazer Fitch’s 4th Regiment. This was shortly after the British victory at the Battle of Quebec, 13 Sep 1759, one of the key battles in the French-Indian Wars.

Solomon was the first child of Samuel and Ruth, and after his death, they had another child in 1761, and named him Solomon.

2. Hepsebeth HUNTLEY was born 9 Oct 1738 in Lyme, and possibly died young, since her parents named another daughter Hepzibah, in 1756.

3. Benjamin 29 HUNTLEY was born 3 Mar 1741 in Lyme, and died about 1806 in Ontario, Canada. He married Bethia DURAN, who was born about 1730. They were married about 1763 in Manchester, Bennington, VT. Benjamin 29 and Bethia were my 4g-grandparents. See the Benjamin HUNTLEY page.

4. Molley HUNTLEY was born 12 Aug 1743 in Lyme, and died 23 Jul 1812 in Lyme, at age 68. She married Capt. Edward CHAPMAN who was born about 1737, and died 19 Dec 1793, at age 56. They were married on 26 May 1765, when she was 21 and he was 27 or 28. They don't appear to have had any children.

In 1790 there were two Edward CHAPMAN households in New London district. One household had 8 people, with 3 females and 5 males, with only 1 of the males under 16. The other household, headed by Edward CHAPMAN 2d, had 4 people, including 1 female, 1 male 16 or over, and 1 male under 16. Our Edward would have been about 53. I don't know which one he was.

The will of Molley (HUNTLEY) CHAPMAN, written 27 Jun 1812, contains some valuable information. She mentions her brothers, Aaron and Hezekiah HUNTLEY of Marlow, NH, her sister, Hepzibah, wife of Zopher MACK and Lovina (HUNTLEY) PECK, wife of Dan PECK, late of Lyme but now of New Connecticut. [MHC]

5. Ruth HUNTLEY was born 6 Mar 1745 in Lyme, and was still living, and single, in 1770, since she was mentioned in her father's will.

6. Samuel 30 HUNTLEY Jr was born 11 Mar 1747 in Lyme, and died about 1806 in Crown Point, NY. He married (1) Susannah HUNTLEY on 7 Oct 1767 in Lyme, and (2) Ruth BROWN, on 18 Mar 1787 in Lempster, NH. He had 4 children with Susannah and 3 more with Ruth.

Samuel 30 HUNTLEY and his first wife, Susannah HUNTLEY, were 2nd cousins, since they shared great-grandparents Aaron 3 HUNTLEY and Mary CHAMPION. This concentrates the blood line even further, since Samuel 30's parents were already 1st cousins. So the family tree of one of the children of Samuel 30 and Susannah will have Aaron 3 HUNTLEY and Mary CHAMPION appearing 3 times as gg-grandparents!

Susannah HUNTLEY was born on 16 Apr 1746, in Lyme, the eldest child of Daniel 16 HUNTLEY and Susannah BECKWITH. Daniel was the son of Daniel 6 HUNTLEY and Hannah BROWN. [VH, p. 85]

Some of these dates are questionable. The first 2 children, Lemuel 89 and Davis 90, have birthdates less than 9 months apart. Lucinda and Marilla are "probably" children of Samuel 30 and Ruth. [VH, p. 105] Also, there is some doubt as to whether John 91 HUNTLEY is the son of Samuel 30 or his brother Benjamin 29. [VH, p. 175]

Samuel 30 served two short terms in the Revolutionary War. First, when he was still living in Lyme, from 9 May 1775 to 7 Jul 1775, he was in Captain Edward Mott’s 7th Company, Colonel Parson’s 6th Connecticut Regiment. For these 2 months, Susannah was at home in Lyme, with Lemuel 89 and Davis 90, both about 6, and possibly John.

Soon after his discharge on 7 Jul 1775, Samuel 30 moved his family from Lyme, CT about 150 miles north, to Lempster, NH, joining his brother, Benjamin 29, who had moved in 1774. Samuel 30 served again in 1776, in the Northern Dept. under Gen. Schuyler, as he is found on pay-roll for Capt. Jason Wait’s Company, receiving £4.15.00 in Feb 1776. [VH, p. 105]

In 1800 Samuel 30 and Ruth are still in Leicester. Their 4 sons of Samuel 30 and Susannah who were present in 1790 have all grown up and left home. Samuel H. HUNTLEY, the son of Samuel 30 and Ruth, is at home. Listed immediately before Samuel 30 is his first cousin, Bethuel 36 HUNTLEY, the son of Aaron 14 HUNTLEY and Mary LEACH.

A court document dated 10 Mar 1806 states that Samuel HUNTLEY, of Crown Point, NY, died leaving some goods and chattel, but no real estate, and no heirs are mentioned.

So Samuel 30 HUNTLEY Jr moved from Lyme, CT to Lempster, NH in 1776, then to Bennington, VT where his son Benjamin 92 was born 17 May 1780. He lived near Leicester, VT in 1790 and 1800, and moved at some point to Crown Point, NY where he died in 1806.

7. Lemuel HUNTLEY was born 17 Nov 1748 in Lyme. He must have died before 1770, since he was not mentioned in his father's will.

8. Esther HUNTLEY was born 2 Feb 1750 in Lyme. Died before 1770, since she was not mentioned in her father's will.

9. Aaron 31 HUNTLEY was born 4 Nov 1752 in Lyme, and died 18 Feb 1819, in Antrim, NH. He married Rachel HUNTLEY, his 3rd cousin 1x removed. Rachel was the daughter of Benejah HUNTLEY, son of Moses HUNTLEY, son of Moses HUNTLEY, son of John HUNTLEY the immigrant. Rachel HUNTLEY died 17 March, 1830, at age 84 years.

Lempster and Marlow, Cheshire County, are just left of center in this 1784 map of southwestern New Hampshire. Antrim doesn't appear, but it will be between Hillsboro and Mason.

Aaron 31 HUNTLEY lived in Marlow, Cheshire, NH, on a farm just south of the Lempster town line. [VH, p. 106]

Aaron 31 HUNTLEY enlisted on 28 Jun 1777, as a Private in Captain Samuel Canfield’s Company, Colonel Benj. Bellow’s N. H. Regt. to reinforce the garrison at Fort Ticonderoga. He was discharged 5 July, after 8 days of service. [VH, p. 106]

In 1790 Aaron 31 HUNTLEY was head of a family of 5 in Marlow, Cheshire County, NH, with 1 male 16 or over, 3 males under 16, and 1 female.

11. Hepzibah HUNTLEY was born 2 Jun 1756 in Lyme. She married Zopher/Zophar MACK, on 14 Oct 1777 in Alstead, Cheshire, NH.

Zophar MACK was born 7 Feb 1743, son of Ebenezer MACK and Abigail DAVIS or DAVIE. Ebenezer MACK (1715 - 1792) was Pastor of the First Baptist Church of East Lyme. He is sometimes conflated with his uncle Ebenezer MACK (1697 - 1777), who married Hannah HUNTLEY (1708 - 1796), daughter of Aaron 5 HUNTLEY and Deborah DE WOLF.

Zophar MACK married (1) Phebe MILLER, born Jan 1748 in Lyme, and died 29 Jan 1777 in Marlow, Cheshire, NH, age 29. Zophar and Phebe had at least 2 children. Zophar died 16 Apr 1824.

Zophar MACK was a Sergeant in Jun and Jul 1777, Bellow's Regiment of Militia also known as the 16th New Hampshire Militia Regiment. This was after the death of his 1st wife and before his 2nd marriage. By 1790 they had a family of 6, still in New London District.
